Often enough that it's been discussed repeatedly over the years; not often enough that anyone has fixed it. :) Every time I've seen it discussed, it was by people who aren't part of the security team, and so far the security team seem to say it's not a concern for them, so for all I know it may just be theoretical… well, one nice feature is that it was only theoretical during the etch + lenny release cycles, since +b +etch +lenny +nmu. So it is not surprising that it stayed unfixed for so long. However, this was broken with sarge (+sarge +etch), and is broken with squeeze with NMUs: 1. Package P is available in testing with version 1.0-1 2. A security bug is found in P 3. A testing-security upload is made (1.0-1+squeeze1) 4. The bug is fixed in unstable in an NMU, also fixing other bugs (1.0-1+nmu1) 5. The user installs 1.0-1+squeeze1 6. Bug#521791: pdns-server: wildcard match returned if qtype doesn't match existing record
Christoph, am Tue, Sep 01, 2009 at 09:38:18PM +0200 hast du folgendes geschrieben: However it's not a security problem and I don't believe it qualifies for a stable (Lenny) update as specified in http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/pkgs.html#upload-stable as it's not a security-related issue nor makes pdns uninstallable on any architecture nor is a truly critical functionality problem. I understand that it's annoying. But I'd rather say it's a normal problem as it doesn't destroy data and affects just part of pdns's functionality. If the release team can be convinced to accept an updated version for Lenny then I'll happily provide one though. it looks to me that handing out false data to clients qualifies as breaking functionality, although no private data is leaked. The bug is a regression from etch and should be pushed to lenny updates. IMHO the bug is a problem in the 2.9.21 upstream release and not exactly the fault of the Debian package. What is the release team's opinion on that? Do we have a chance to get this into Lenny? If the patch is accepted upstream (which you indicated), please backport that fix to Lenny, yes. Bug#476109: Not really an Emacs issue
This is not really appropriate for Emacs. Installing Emacs should not force users of other editors to receive a system-wide policy to use Emacs for editing these types of files (however sympathetic I am to evangelizing those poor heathens. :-) The idea as such has some merit. Debian already provides a facility for generic redirection to the user's preferred editor, so this suggestion could be implemented with /usr/bin/editor instead of emacsclient (this also solves the issue of allowing users to prefer emacs over emacsclient). However, it is unobvious to me which package to reassign this bug to. mime-support contains the tool for updating /etc/mailcap so that's what I would suggest, but I leave it to more competent people to possibly find a better route to take this. /* era */ -- If this were a real .signature, it would suck less. Bug#544641: lvm2: Can't resume from a uswsusp hibernation on LVM swap
reassign 544641 uswsusp thanks On Tue, Sep 01, 2009 at 09:58:24PM -0400, Stefan Monnier wrote: My machines all use LVM and have their swap on LVM as well. Recently the hibernation feature started to fail, because upon resume, it couldn't find the swap partition. It seems the problem is that /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/lvm2 tries to activate $ROOT and $RESUME, but with uswsusp, $RESUME is just set to y rather than to the actual device (the resume device name is stored in /etc/uswsusp.conf instead). initramfs-tools only specifies the resume variable for use to resume anything, and this variable includes the complete device name. So it was already broken and only worked as the lvm support enabled the complete boot VG, which is not longer the case. Bug#476109: Not really an Emacs issue
On 2009-09-02 08:36 +0200, era eriksson wrote: This is not really appropriate for Emacs. With /usr/bin/sensible-editor rather than /usr/bin/editor, so that users get their preferred editor instead of the system one. However, it is unobvious to me which package to reassign this bug to. mime-support contains the tool for updating /etc/mailcap so that's what I would suggest, but I leave it to more competent people to possibly find a better route to take this. The big problem is that the editor may need a terminal to work, and if it gets invoked by a GUI program, nothing happens, aside from a complaint by the editor in ~/.xsession-errors that is invisible to the user. This would make the file grow very large indeed. It seems to me, that rotating the history file on a weekly basis somehow defeats the purpose of e.g. ck-history --frequent. ck-history --frequent reads all rotated files, so it includes information for (rotation period * number of files kept). If at all, I'd at least rotate the file on a monthly basis. That would also work for me. When you say always, do you mean you have seen this problem with earlier kernel versions as well? Yes. See http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2009/03/msg00123.html and Bug #12880 on bugzilla.kernel.org That's a different bug, reported as http://bugs.debian.org/518358, which you said was fixed in version 2.6.29-2. I'm talking about the bug reported as http://bugs.debian.org/542917. How are you invoking wpa_supplicant? Started from /etc/netwok/interfaces and/or wpa_gui Do you use a front-end such as network-manager or wicd? No I've looked at where the message wlan0: deauthenticating by local choice (reason=3) is generated, and it appears to mean that something is setting the interface down. I have been using the same WLAN device and the same kernel version as you with no such problems. So I think this is an issue with wpa_supplicant or wpa_gui, or the way you have configured them. I will reassign the bug accordingly. I'd say the deauth message is appearing and _then_ the interface is taken down in reaction. wpa_supplicant simply reacts to events the kernel driver gives it. wpa_supplicant doesn't look suspicious here at all given this information. Bug#429243: stopped working, SSH stopped logging failures!
Package: openssh-server Version: 1:5.1p1-7 Severity: wishlist Hi, Now that the default syslog daemon is rsyslog, openssh-server could ship a configure snippet in /etc/rsyslog.d/openssh-server.conf that contains: $$AddUnixListenSocket /var/run/sshd/dev/log And probably the issue should be documented in README.Debian for the other syslog variants. That still leaves the question who creates /var/run/sshd/dev. I'm using the following patch on some machines: Index: init.d/ssh === --- init.d/ssh (revision 3863) +++ init.d/ssh (working copy) @@ -59,8 +59,8 @@ check_privsep_dir() { # Create the PrivSep empty dir if necessary -if [ ! -d /var/run/sshd ]; then - mkdir /var/run/sshd +if [ ! -d /var/run/sshd/dev ]; then + mkdir -p /var/run/sshd/dev chmod 0755 /var/run/sshd fi } Unfortunately it won't really help when /var/run is on tmpfs, because the syslog daemon is started before the ssh init script has run. The only proper solution I can think of right now is to split the ssh init script in two: - the first part runs before any syslog daemon, and does nothing except creating /var/run/sshd/dev directory if it is missing - the second part runs after the syslog daemon has started, and does the rest. Bug#544155: [grub-pc] grub update renders system unbootable (unaligned pointer 0x700ba)

The debian/ directory should work with all upstream revisions between 2549 (beta1) and 2488 (1.96+20090808) If that patch isn't the reason for the break, I think it would be good to reverse 2494, 2527 or 2494 The others don't look like they could cause this. As pointed in another post, 1bit_blitters.diff doesn't resolve antything. I started bisection, and this are my first results: Last good revision: 2531 First bad revision: 2532 2531 boots fine. 2532 gives unaligned pointer. but, this looks like problem in configuration, because diff with previous version is mostyly about kfreebsd stuff and generating configuration. This is difference beetwen my grub.cfg in this two revisions: [...] So i will probably need to bisect again, this time using explicit commands each time. And testing if ie. tab completion works in them. Oh I forgot that r2507 disabled gfxterm by default. So better use GRUB_TERMINAL=gfxterm to explicitly enable it. And I forgot also a difference between the squeeze Debian package and the sid one: terminal_output.gfxterm vs terminal_output gfxterm The dot was introduced in 1.96+20090725-1 to workaround a regression, but then it was dropped again because it actually shouldn't necessary. GRUB handles this a bit different, with the dot it automatically loads gfxter.mod but we explicitly insmod it anyway so it shouldn't make a difference. Here's a complete diff -u of my grub.cfg between squeeze version and sid one, maybe that helps a bit: ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/00_header ### set default=0 -set timeout=5 +insmod ext2 set root=(hd0,2) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 3d35a1c9-bad6-46aa-b84e-bd65a03d9579 if loadfont /usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then set gfxmode=640x480 insmod gfxterm insmod vbe - if terminal_output.gfxterm ; then true ; else + if terminal_output gfxterm ; then true ; else # For backward compatibility with versions of terminal.mod that don't # understand terminal_output terminal gfxterm fi fi +set timeout=5 ### END /etc/grub.d/00_header ### ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/05_debian_theme ### +insmod ext2 set root=(hd0,2) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 3d35a1c9-bad6-46aa-b84e-bd65a03d9579 insmod png @@ -37,12 +39,14 @@ ### BEGIN /etc/grub.d/10_linux ### menuentry Debian GNU/Linux, Linux 2.6.30-1-amd64 { + insmod ext2 set root=(hd0,2) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 3d35a1c9-bad6-46aa-b84e-bd65a03d9579 linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.30-1-amd64 root=UUID=3d35a1c9-bad6-46aa-b84e-bd65a03d9579 ro vga=0x317 initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.30-1-amd64 } menuentry Debian GNU/Linux, Linux 2.6.30-1-amd64 (recovery mode) { + insmod ext2 set root=(hd0,2) search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set 3d35a1c9-bad6-46aa-b84e-bd65a03d9579 linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.30-1-amd64 root=UUID=3d35a1c9-bad6-46aa-b84e-bd65a03d9579 ro single vga=0x317 -- Felix Zielcke Proud Debian Maintainer -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Debian already provides a facility for generic redirection to the user's preferred editor, so this suggestion could be implemented with /usr/bin/editor instead of emacsclient (this also solves the issue of allowing users to prefer emacs over emacsclient). With /usr/bin/sensible-editor rather than /usr/bin/editor, so that users get their preferred editor instead of the system one. Yes, sorry, that's of course the one I meant. Shrug. The big problem is that the editor may need a terminal to work, and if it gets invoked by a GUI program, nothing happens, aside from a complaint by the editor in ~/.xsession-errors that is invisible to the user. Should there be a sensible-gui-editor as well? Perhaps a wrapper which starts the sensible-editor in an xterm if it's not graphical in its own right? /* era */ -- If this were a real .signature, it would suck less. Was fixed, but appears again in 2.6.30. Reopening the old one would have the same effect or would be merged to the new one. Not sure that's the best to do: remember that rmmod/modprobe iwl3945 (one or few times in the raw) bring generally everything back to normal till next failure. -- Daniel -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Some time ago, Michael and I briefly discussed the possibility that rsyslogd would defer some of its configuration statements to solve such split situations. Actually, what we discussed was more complex, but I wonder if a somewhat simpler solution might solve a practical need: What if we could instruct the socket listener to defer getting activated by some (fixed, but configurable) period. Something along the lines of $IMUXSockDelayListen 60 to delay listening by 60 seconds after startup. I think I could quickly implement such a functionality (in v4-devel) if and only if the delay applies to all sockets. Not sure if that constraints renders the idea unusable. Bug#544366: devscripts: debsign wont sign if DEBRELEASE_DEBS_DIR set to unexisting dir but changes specified

The manpage says: If a .changes, .dsc or .commands file is specified, it is signed, otherwise, debian/changelog is parsed to determine the name of the .changes file to look for in the parent directory. I guess the irritating part about this manpage sentence is the part to look for in the parent directory, but in reality the difference to be drawn of this is that if a changes file is specified we do not need to construct one ourself. --debs-dir DIR Look for the .changes and .dsc files in directory DIR instead of the parent of the source directory. This should either be an absolute path or relative to the top of the source directory. This one is basically very clear. It says if --debs-dir is specified its the place were we look for the files. So it will look in DEBRELEASE_DEBS_DIR *if* I don't specify a changes file, but if I do, it will ignore DEBRELEASE_DEBS_DIR and just sign the file I say (in the dir I say). That's what I understand at least, and it's what it does if I create an empty directory: Ah, thats indeed interesting. While I tend to think that actually doing something when the directory exists but is empty and doing nothing if the directory is empty is indeed a bug. Rainer, were you already able to nail down these issues and how far away is the 4.4.1 release? Quick answer: I feel much better about 4.4.x right now. I will probably release 4.4.1 today. In Depth: the segfault is not yet found, but it turns out that it was present in 4.2.0 as well. Also, only one person reported it so far and only on one of his (many) systems, this bug seems to be very related to the environment. I think this is especially true as 4.2.0 was in far more widespread use and as such I should have heard about the bug earlier/from more people if it would be likely to occur. So I conclude it is OK (though not optimal) to do a new release with this bug. I am still fighting with it. My next step is to try isolate a version where it was not present (I somewhat think it may even be present in v3 as well). To the rest of 4.4.x release, I made a mistake when I handled the beta. I moved the beta branch to quickly to a new release, without doing a stable in between. I thought I had sorted this problem out, but when I made the 4.3.2 beta stable, I obviously missed backporting some bug fixes that were present in the newer betas. I think all of them have now been found and sorted out. There still is a chance that I may be wrong, but git log review plus absence of any more bug reports makes me think I am right. So, all in all, it probably is a good time to do a 4.4.1 release. Rainer -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Bug#529882: Perhaps found the soruce of the problem
Hi, after reading a little bit of guessnet source and pcap documentation, one of the possible reasons seemed to be a too short timeout for packet capture (4th parameter of pcap_open_live). This is set to 500ms in the original sources. Changing this to 5 (5000 should also suffice I think) solved this for me (read, I can't reproduce since I changed this). But I think, my approach (while working) is rather crude, perhaps it would be better to do some timeouting in NetWatcher (the class responsible to read from the wire). If you also encounter the problem, try the following (I assume that you do not know how to build packages from source, if you do, the interesting part is step (ii) and (iii)). (i) download guessnet source (apt-get source guessnet, apt-get build-dep guessnet) (ii) go to guessnet root/src/util. There you'll find a file called netwatcher.cc. Open it with your favourite editor. (iii) search for pcap_open_live. You should find something like if (!(pcap_interface = pcap_open_live ( (char*)iface.c_str(), captureSize, 1, 500, errbuf))) (iv) change the 500 to s.t. like 5000 or 5 (the latter might induce a loong delay if no packets are received, but did not test) and save the file (v) go to guessnet root and fire up dpkg-buildpackage (vi) now you should have a freshly baked guessnet .deb in guessnet root/..
