Every time I've seen it discussed, it was by people who aren't part of
the security team, and so far the security team seem to say it's not a
concern for them, so for all I know it may just be theoretical…

well, one nice feature is that it was only theoretical during the etch +
lenny release cycles, since +b +etch +lenny +nmu.
So it is not surprising that it stayed unfixed for so long.

However, this was broken with sarge (+sarge +etch), and is broken
with squeeze with NMUs:
1. Package P is available in testing with version 1.0-1
2. A security bug is found in P
3. A testing-security upload is made (1.0-1+squeeze1)
4. The bug is fixed in unstable in an NMU, also fixing other bugs
(1.0-1+nmu1)
5. The user installs 1.0-1+squeeze1
6. P 1.0-1+nmu1 migrates to testing
At this point, the user should install 1.0-1+nmu1 (it contains fixes to
other bugs) but will stay with 1.0-1+squeeze1.

Bug#521791: pdns-server: wildcard match returned if qtype doesn't match existing record

However it's not a security problem and I don't believe it qualifies for
a stable (Lenny) update as specified in
 http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/developers-reference/pkgs.html#upload-stable
as it's not a security-related issue nor makes pdns uninstallable on any
architecture nor is a truly critical functionality problem. I
understand that it's annoying. But I'd rather say it's a normal
problem as it doesn't destroy data and affects just part of pdns's
functionality. If the release team can be convinced to accept an updated
version for Lenny then I'll happily provide one though.

it looks to me that handing out false data to clients qualifies as breaking
functionality, although no private data is leaked.

The bug is a regression from etch and should be pushed to lenny updates.
IMHO the bug is a problem in the 2.9.21 upstream release and not exactly
the fault of the Debian package.

What is the release team's opinion on that? Do we have a chance to get
 this into Lenny?

If the patch is accepted upstream (which you indicated), please backport
that fix to Lenny, yes. The dpatch I saw looked fairly small and
selfcontained.

Bug#544512: live-helper: [INTL:DE] German translation of manpages

2009-09-02 Thread Daniel Baumann
tag 544512 pending
thanks

Hi,

translations commited in git.

atm, something appears to be broken with the po4a stuff, as the manpages
do not get generated (if you happen to know how to fix it, patches very
welcome).

unrelated to that, at some point, the translations needs to be reviewed.
it often happens when l10n-de translates that the translations are not
understandable anymore, some gems are also included here (e.g.
Netz-Quell-Image for source net image, and some things are wrong
(e.g. Live-Helper instead of live-helper). anyhow, those are not so
important right now.

thank you very much for your work, it's appreciated.

Daniel

Bug#476109: Not really an Emacs issue

2009-09-02 Thread era eriksson
This is not really appropriate for Emacs. Installing Emacs should not
force users of other editors to receive a system-wide policy to use
Emacs for editing these types of files (however sympathetic I am to
evangelizing those poor heathens. :-)

The idea as such has some merit. Debian already provides a facility for
generic redirection to the user's preferred editor, so this suggestion
could be implemented with /usr/bin/editor instead of emacsclient (this
also solves the issue of allowing users to prefer emacs over
emacsclient).

However, it is unobvious to me which package to reassign this bug to.
mime-support contains the tool for updating /etc/mailcap so that's what
I would suggest, but I leave it to more competent people to possibly
find a better route to take this.

with precmd functions and builtin tests which shows only when precmd
functions are called without a preceding exec() by the shell.
Running an external programme before the test from the precmd
function (e.g. ls /dev/null) does not work though.

I can reproduce this with zsh -f.

Bug#544656: dansguardian: clamdscan content scanner adjustment

2009-09-02 Thread Imre Gergely
Package: dansguardian
Version: 2.10.1.1-1
Severity: normal

Using clamdscan content scanner does not work by default, one needs to
adjust the clamdudsfile variable which contains the socket to the
clamav-daemon.
The default clamav-daemon socket is /var/run/clamav/clamd.ctl but in
contentscanners/clamdscan.conf it's /var/run/clamav/clamd.sock.

It would be desirable IMHO to modify that so it doesn't have to be
adjusted by default after installing the package. Another solution
would be to modify it postinst by looking at /etc/clamav/clamd.conf

svnserve processes started a few minutes ago by users that I don't want to
kill. Currently i play with ps / awk / xargs and killall but it would be
very nice if I could do: killall --older-than 1d svnserve

This would kill all svnserve processes started more than 1 day ago.

Bug#189261: [PATCH] support HTTP proxy basic access authenication

2009-09-02 Thread Zak B. Elep
This patch implements basic access authentication against HTTP proxies.
The changes are done without touching the external interface, requiring
no SONAME change (and hopefully no ABI breakage.)

Still, more testing is needed.

reassign 544641 uswsusp
thanks

On Tue, Sep 01, 2009 at 09:58:24PM -0400, Stefan Monnier wrote:
My machines all use LVM and have their swap on LVM as well.
Recently the hibernation feature started to fail, because upon
resume, it couldn't find the swap partition. It seems the problem
 is that /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/local-top/lvm2 tries
to activate $ROOT and $RESUME, but with uswsusp, $RESUME is just
set to y rather than to the actual device (the resume device
name is stored in /etc/uswsusp.conf instead).

initramfs-tools only specifies the resume variable for use to resume
anything, and this variable includes the complete device name. So it was
already broken and only worked as the lvm support enabled the complete
boot VG, which is not longer the case.

While I could still test on other laptops (obviously, it needs a PCMCIA

If not, you may close this bug.

The idea as such has some merit. Debian already provides a facility for
generic redirection to the user's preferred editor, so this suggestion
could be implemented with /usr/bin/editor instead of emacsclient (this
also solves the issue of allowing users to prefer emacs over
 emacsclient).

With /usr/bin/sensible-editor rather than /usr/bin/editor, so that users
get their preferred editor instead of the system one.

However, it is unobvious to me which package to reassign this bug to.
mime-support contains the tool for updating /etc/mailcap so that's what
I would suggest, but I leave it to more competent people to possibly
find a better route to take this.

The big problem is that the editor may need a terminal to work, and if
it gets invoked by a GUI program, nothing happens, aside from a
complaint by the editor in ~/.xsession-errors that is invisible to the
user.

That's what it says after I select a kernel in grub. It does it for
 both 2.6.30 and 2.6.26.

Sorry I can't provide more info, dunno what else to say.

If you need any info, just tell me what to do. :P

Please try without gfxterm.
Uncomment the `GRUB_TERMINAL=console' in /etc/default/grub and run
update-grub.
What's your graphic card?
The best would be if you could do a svn-bisect between r2488 and r2549.

Bug#544663: dma: smarthost given at package installation not used

2009-09-02 Thread Tino Keitel
Package: dma
Version: 0.0.2009.07.17-2

Hi,

I entered eazy.amigager.de as the smarthost when asked for it by debconf

However, the generated config files use the default mail.example.com, and
debconf also doesn't know about eazy.amigager.de after installation, as
can be seen in the debconf information at the end of this bug report.

2009-09-02 Thread Tino Keitel
Package: dma

Hi,

the file /etc/dma/auth.conf is world readable after installation:

$ ls -la /etc/dma/auth.conf
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 186 Sep 1 21:57 /etc/dma/auth.conf

While this file doesn't contain any secrets after installation, it is
intended to be filled with passwords by the user. So it should not be not

Bug#485524: cdcd fails to retrieve CDDB information

2009-09-02 Thread Zak B. Elep

thanks

Hi, thanks for the bug!

This is due to cdcd having a hardcoded URL for www.freedb.org in conf.c,
whereas FreeDB has since updated its database access through
freedb.freedb.org .

As the new maintainer for this package, I expect to get this fixed by
the time the new libcdaudio is uploaded.

Stay tuned!

 * debian/login.pam: pam_securetty included as a required module instead of
requisite to avoid leak of user name information. Closes: #531341

Please revert this change. The 'requisite' module is necessary to prevent
exposure of the root password over insecure channels - such as telnet, but
also including unencrypted XDMCP connections. root users should never have
the opportunity to type their password when the tty is not secure.

Bug#544669: cryptsetup: /sbin/blkid is not in initramfs

2009-09-02 Thread Mario 'BitKoenig' Holbe
Package: cryptsetup
Version: 2:1.0.7-2
Severity: grave

Hello,

cryptsetup 1.0.7-2 recommends to replace vol_id and un_vol_id by blkid
and un_blkid. Both of these scripts depend on /sbin/blkid.
However, /sbin/blkid is not available in the initramfs image.

Considering your changelog statement that udev will remove vol_id soon,
I'm not sure whether this bug should really be fixed in cryptsetup
itself or if /sbin/blkid should be included in the initramfs either by
initramfs-tools or util-linux directly.

Bug#544668: dh_quilt_patch disallows setting QUILT_PATCHES

2009-09-02 Thread Steve Langasek
Package: quilt
Version: 0.46-8
Severity: important

The dh_quilt_patch command forcibly sets QUILT_PATCHES=debian/patches with
no support for overriding this value. This is a regression in dh_quilt_patch
versus /usr/share/quilt/quilt.make, and is a blocker for me converting one
of my package's debian/rules over to dh.

(No, it's not reasonable to require me to move my patches to debian/patches
instead. That's on the TODO list, but below several other items - such as
getting more of these patches forwarded upstream so that there's less of a
patchload to worry about in the first place, and moving the patch directory
around in the package VCS will be less of a disruptive event.)

Do you have any numbers/experiences where the history file has grown large?

Until Steve's recent additions to the PAM stack installing pam-ck-connector
would add an entry every time cron ran. This would make the file grow very
large indeed.

It seems to me, that rotating the history file on a weekly basis somehow
 defeats
the purpose of e.g. ck-history --frequent.

ck-history --frequent reads all rotated files, so it includes information for
(rotation period * number of files kept).

If at all, I'd at least rotate the file on a monthly basis.

That would also work for me. Having some bound is better than no bound,
and with Steve's fixes it doesn't make a big difference what that bound
is.

Thanks,

James

But I suggest you remove from debian/control all packages you don't
need, else compiling will take unnecessary long.
The debian/ directory should work with all upstream revisions between
 2549 (beta1) and 2488 (1.96+20090808)

If that patch isn't the reason for the break, I think it would be good
 to reverse 2494, 2527 or 2494
The others don't look like they could cause this.

As pointed in another post, 1bit_blitters.diff doesn't resolve
antything.

I started bisection, and this are my first results:

Last good revision: 2531
First bad revision: 2532

2531 boots fine.
2532 gives unaligned pointer.

but, this looks like problem in configuration,
because diff with previous version is mostyly about kfreebsd stuff and
generating configuration.

This is difference beetwen my grub.cfg in this two revisions:

   set color_normal=black/black
   set color_highlight=magenta/black
 else
   set menu_color_normal=cyan/blue

So i will probably need to bisect again, this time using explicit
commands each time. And testing if ie. tab completion works in them.

Additional infos:
- seems to happen only with the wlan interface (iwl3945)
- used guessnet on the same machine with 32 bit for 2.5 years with no
single occurence of this.

Question:
Would a strace of a guessnet run be of any help?

Is this still needed, or is it superseded by consolekit yet?

Given that editing of other packages' config files is still a policy
violation, whether or not they're conffiles, this isn't going to be easy to
solve, otherwise - short of not shipping a default group.conf at all.

  Yes. See

I'm talking about the bug reported as http://bugs.debian.org/542917.

   How are you invoking wpa_supplicant?
  Started from /etc/netwok/interfaces and/or wpa_gui

Do you use a front-end such as
   network-manager or wicd?
  No

I've looked at where the message wlan0: deauthenticating by local
choice (reason=3) is generated, and it appears to mean that something
is setting the interface down. I have been using the same WLAN device
and the same kernel version as you with no such problems. So I think
this is an issue with wpa_supplicant or wpa_gui, or the way you have
configured them. I will reassign the bug accordingly.

I'd say the deauth message is appearing and _then_ the interface is taken down
in reaction. wpa_supplicant simply reacts to events the kernel driver gives it.
wpa_supplicant doesn't look suspicious here at all given this information.

Kel.

Bug#429243: stopped working, SSH stopped logging failures!

2009-09-02 Thread Gábor Gombás
Package: openssh-server
Version: 1:5.1p1-7
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Now that the default syslog daemon is rsyslog, openssh-server could ship
a configure snippet in /etc/rsyslog.d/openssh-server.conf that contains:

  $$AddUnixListenSocket /var/run/sshd/dev/log

And probably the issue should be documented in README.Debian for the
other syslog variants.

That still leaves the question who creates /var/run/sshd/dev. I'm using
the following patch on some machines:

Index: init.d/ssh
===
--- init.d/ssh (revision 3863)
+++ init.d/ssh  (working copy)

+if [ ! -d /var/run/sshd/dev ]; then
+ mkdir -p /var/run/sshd/dev
chmod 0755 /var/run/sshd
 fi
 }

Unfortunately it won't really help when /var/run is on tmpfs, because
the syslog daemon is started before the ssh init script has run. The
only proper solution I can think of right now is to split the ssh init
script in two:

- the first part runs before any syslog daemon, and does nothing except
creating /var/run/sshd/dev directory if it is missing

- the second part runs after the syslog daemon has started, and does the
  rest.

Bug#544155: [grub-pc] grub update renders system unbootable (unaligned pointer 0x700ba)

[...]

So i will probably need to bisect again, this time using explicit
commands each time. And testing if ie. tab completion works in them.

Oh I forgot that r2507 disabled gfxterm by default. So better use
GRUB_TERMINAL=gfxterm to explicitly enable it.
And I forgot also a difference between the squeeze Debian package and
the sid one:
terminal_output.gfxterm vs terminal_output gfxterm
The dot was introduced in 1.96+20090725-1 to workaround a regression,
but then it was dropped again because it actually shouldn't necessary.
GRUB handles this a bit different, with the dot it automatically loads
gfxter.mod but we explicitly insmod it anyway so it shouldn't make a
difference.

Here's a complete diff -u of my grub.cfg between squeeze version and sid
one, maybe that helps a bit:

Bug#544673: [mupen64plus] Debian supported CPU architectures not well defined

2009-09-02 Thread Sven Eckelmann
Package: mupen64plus
Version: 1.5+dfsg1-2
Severity: normal

mupen64plus has a well defined set of supported cpu architectures. Most of the
supported architectures by debian aren't defined yet. This means that
information about endianess and word size are missing.
A complete list of all supported architecture can be found in dpkg's source in

Bug#544671: Documentation: Settings file and change and rsyslog

2009-09-02 Thread Frederic MASSOT
Package: watchdog
Version: 5.6-6
Severity: wishlist

Hi,

Watchdog reboot multiple servers because the file /var/log/messages is not
changed in time.
There was no problem on the server, because there were other entries in the log
files.

I discussed with the Rsyslog package maintainers (bug report #539739) and they
have added
a new parameter to configure Rsyslog (version 5.x) to always write the marks.

You can follow the discussion at that address:
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=539739

Can you add to the Watchdog documentation that when enable settings file and
change
for the file /var/log/messages it takes to enable the Rsyslog settings
$ModLoad Immark
and $ActionWriteAllMarkMessages on ?

Regards.

Is there another solution beside replacing fwlogwatch with some other

With /usr/bin/sensible-editor rather than /usr/bin/editor, so that users
get their preferred editor instead of the system one.

Yes, sorry, that's of course the one I meant. Shrug.

The big problem is that the editor may need a terminal to work, and if
it gets invoked by a GUI program, nothing happens, aside from a
complaint by the editor in ~/.xsession-errors that is invisible to the
 user.

Should there be a sensible-gui-editor as well? Perhaps a wrapper which
starts the sensible-editor in an xterm if it's not graphical in its own
right?

Looks like they both contain libgstdirac.so

*sigh* That's a problem with third party repositories. Make sure to
report there that their package must stop shipping libgstdirac.so.

I'll add a Replaces into gst-plugins-bad for now...

Having the above wireless device, I always have problems with connection to AP
using wpa_supplicant.

When you say always, do you mean you have seen this problem with
earlier kernel versions as well?

Yes. See

http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2009/03/msg00123.html

and Bug #12880 on bugzilla.kernel.org

That's a different bug, reported as http://bugs.debian.org/518358,
which you said was fixed in version 2.6.29-2.

Was fixed, but appears again in 2.6.30. Reopening the old one would have
the same effect or would be merged to the new one.

Not sure that's the best to do: remember that rmmod/modprobe iwl3945
(one or few times in the raw) bring generally everything back to normal
till next failure.

Bug#429243: stopped working, SSH stopped logging failures!

And probably the issue should be documented in README.Debian for the
 other syslog variants.

Seems reasonable.

That still leaves the question who creates /var/run/sshd/dev. I'm using
the following patch on some machines:

 Index: init.d/ssh

Unfortunately it won't really help when /var/run is on tmpfs, because
the syslog daemon is started before the ssh init script has run. The
only proper solution I can think of right now is to split the ssh init
 script in two:

 - the first part runs before any syslog daemon, and does nothing except
creating /var/run/sshd/dev directory if it is missing

 - the second part runs after the syslog daemon has started, and does the
   rest.

I definitely don't want to do this. Init script multiplication has a
slow but inexorable effect on boot time.

Michael, is there a standard approach that packages can use to do this?
postfix doesn't seem to do anything particularly special.

 sleep 3s ; modprobe -i r8169 ; sleep 2s ; ifconfig eth0

 10.1.1.2

but I dont like this way, and the r8169 may be more stable.

Best regards to the wonderful DEBIAN TEAM!!

I would recommend to update from Debian Etch to Debian Lenny,
which provides a more recent kernel version.

After I migrated my Lenovo X61 Tablet laptop running squeeze from
latest 2.6.26 kernel to 2.6.30 kernel, the wake-up process after
Suspend-To-Ram (by closing the lid) with about 1/2 probability ends in
 re-Suspend.

That is: I open the lid, the laptop wakes up, the screen changes to
text mode, several error lines are printed, and in a second it goes
STR again. If, after that, with the lid open, I press the power button
to wake it up again, it wakes up properly.

I managed to shot the error lines which are printed before the laptop
suspends. Each line contain some kind of timestamp; I am printing it
for the first line and changing it to x.xx for the next lines.
If for some reason you need the exact photo (instead of my retype
which may contain mistypes), please request it:

Some time ago, Michael and I briefly discussed the possibility that
rsyslogd would defer some of its configuration statements to solve such
split situations. Actually, what we discussed was more complex, but I
wonder if a somewhat simpler solution might solve a practical need: What
if we could instruct the socket listener to defer getting activated by
some (fixed, but configurable) period. Something along the lines of

$IMUXSockDelayListen 60

to delay listening by 60 seconds after startup. I think I could quickly
implement such a functionality (in v4-devel) if and only if the delay
applies to all sockets. Not sure if that constraints renders the idea
unusable.

Bug#544366: devscripts: debsign wont sign if DEBRELEASE_DEBS_DIR set to unexisting dir but changes specified

I guess the irritating part about this manpage sentence is the part to
look for in the parent directory, but in reality the difference
to be drawn of this is that if a changes file is specified we do not
need to construct one ourself.

--debs-dir DIR
Look for the .changes and .dsc files in directory DIR instead of
the parent of the source directory. This should either be an absolute path or
relative to the top of the source directory.

This one is basically very clear. It says if --debs-dir is specified its
the place were we look for the files.

So it will look in DEBRELEASE_DEBS_DIR *if* I don't specify a changes file,
 but
if I do, it will ignore DEBRELEASE_DEBS_DIR and just sign the file I say (in
 the
dir I say). That's what I understand at least, and it's what it does if I
 create
 an empty directory:

Ah, thats indeed interesting. While I tend to think that actually doing
something when the directory exists but is empty and doing nothing if
the directory is empty is indeed a bug.

Still, my solution proposal wasn't answered by you.

I don't have any ideas about swap files error though.

Hi

Debian mplayer package is built without libmad support.
Libmad is a fixed-point audio mpeg decoder.1
Without libmad support, mplayer can't be used on slow armel devices that
lack hardware FPU, such as the Freerunner.

Package from debian-multimedia.org is built with libmad support, and it
works in Freerunner much better.
Since libmad is available in debian main, please enable libmad support in

Bug#543505: rsyslog: Wrong priority format for remote action

2009-09-02 Thread Rainer Gerhards

Rainer, were you already able to nail down these issues and how far away is
 the
 4.4.1 release?

Quick answer: I feel much better about 4.4.x right now. I will probably
release 4.4.1 today.

In Depth: the segfault is not yet found, but it turns out that it was
present in 4.2.0 as well. Also, only one person reported it so far and
only on one of his (many) systems, this bug seems to be very related to
the environment. I think this is especially true as 4.2.0 was in far
more widespread use and as such I should have heard about the bug
earlier/from more people if it would be likely to occur. So I conclude
it is OK (though not optimal) to do a new release with this bug. I am
still fighting with it. My next step is to try isolate a version where
it was not present (I somewhat think it may even be present in v3 as
well).

To the rest of 4.4.x release, I made a mistake when I handled the beta.
I moved the beta branch to quickly to a new release, without doing a
stable in between. I thought I had sorted this problem out, but when I
made the 4.3.2 beta stable, I obviously missed backporting some bug
fixes that were present in the newer betas. I think all of them have
now been found and sorted out. There still is a chance that I may be
wrong, but git log review plus absence of any more bug reports makes me
think I am right.

So, all in all, it probably is a good time to do a 4.4.1 release.

Rainer

Bug#529882: Perhaps found the soruce of the problem

2009-09-02 Thread Dietz Pröpper
Hi,

after reading a little bit of guessnet source and pcap documentation,
one of the possible reasons seemed to be a too short timeout for packet
capture (4th parameter of pcap_open_live). This is set to 500ms in the
original sources. Changing this to 5 (5000 should also suffice I think)
solved this for me (read, I can't reproduce since I changed this).

But I think, my approach (while working) is rather crude, perhaps it would
be better to do some timeouting in NetWatcher (the class responsible to
read from the wire).

If you also encounter the problem, try the following (I assume that you do
not know how to build packages from source, if you do, the interesting part
is step (ii) and (iii)).

(i) download guessnet source (apt-get source guessnet, apt-get build-dep
guessnet)
(ii) go to guessnet root/src/util. There you'll find a file called
netwatcher.cc. Open it with your favourite editor.
(iii) search for pcap_open_live. You should find something like
if (!(pcap_interface = pcap_open_live (
   (char*)iface.c_str(), captureSize, 1, 500, errbuf)))
(iv) change the 500 to s.t. like 5000 or 5 (the latter might induce a
loong delay if no packets are received, but did not test) and save the file
(v) go to guessnet root and fire up dpkg-buildpackage
(vi) now you should have a freshly baked guessnet .deb in guessnet
root/..

No. I won't fret about maintainers that do not look at bug reports here...
