To complete the upgrade I had to change the XkbLayout to us (file /etc/default/console-setup). Do you mean that version 1.47 spans 1000 grep, sed, sort processes? This was the bug I believe was fixed. Or something different happens this time? Can you send your /etc/default/{keyboard,console-setup} files so I can make tests. Upgrade to version 1.47 spans many processes. I can't reproduce this behaviour by reinstallation of the console-setup. The behaviour might be changed after installation of the keyboard-configuration package. I attach the /etc/default/console-setup (screwed by keyboard-configuration) and the keyboard definition file /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/sk_tz. Bug#557061: Please update the mkfs.vfat runtime output and manpage to talk more about bootability
Package: dosfstools Severity: wishlist Daniel, thanks for maintaining dosfstools. They are very useful. But as mkfs.vfat mentions in its manpage, the partitions it creates aren't always bootable. This took me a long time, and a lot of frustration, to realize, because I didn't read the manpage before I used the tool. Could you please make some changes to help other hurried users like me? :) 1. Could you please mention in the manpage that the partitions still won't be bootable even when you install a Microsoft boot sector on them? 2. Could you please suggest in the manpage that the command ms-sys -p can fix this for people who have already run mkfs.vfat then filled up the resulting partition with important data? 3. Could you please suggest to users some alternative to mkfs.vfat that will always create bootable disks in the first place? 4. And most importantly, when users run mkfs.vfat, could you please display a short message on the screen telling users that the partitions mkfs.vfat creates are not bootable, even when you later install Microsoft boot sectors, and telling users to see the manpage for details? Bug#557065: [PATCH git-core] Update copyright file
Package: git-core Version: 1:1.6.5.3-1 Severity: minor Hi, I continue to be amazed by how quickly you manage to put out updated packages (same day as upstream). git makes this sort of thing easier, I guess. Anyway, while peeking at the release notes, I noticed the copyright file still mentions the now-removed mozilla-sha1, hence this patch. -- % -- Subject: Update copyright file MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit The Mozilla SHA-1 implementation has been replaced with block-sha1, so it no longer needs its own section in debian/copyright. While we’re at it, update copyright dates to include the year 2009 and match upstream. Ok, then there is a workaround, thanks. But the bug is not solved as there is no reason to compile ipv6 integrated in the kernel. More over the ipv6.disable is not documented. man bootparam do not show it, grep -ri ipv6 /usr/src/linux-*/Documentation give no hint and I did not found it anywhere. I also did try grep -r module_param_named /usr/src/linux/net but it is not found that way too. On the other hand, if ipv6 is compiled as module it is pretty easy to switch it off. It is in theory possible for users to link against it (actually, maintainer claims it is not, [probably, my bet, due to some missing symbols which are available only inside the Tcl interpreter]: see the lintian overrides in the package, I haven't actually checked which is the case). Still it should not be the rule. So, once more, we can fix this with proper ldconfig invocation in postinst or we can move those *.so in a different place. The former solution is likely to require a change in the Tcl interpreter to look for objects elsewhere. Manoj: what is the -policy stance on this? Should we fix that by actually invoking ldconfig no matter what? If this is the case, I attach a patch offering an NMU in that direction. Please Cc me if you want me to actually do the NMU (otherwise I'll eventually get back to this bug log, maybe ...). Cheers. -- Stefano Zacchiroli -o- PhD in Computer Science \ PostDoc @ Univ. Bug#553125: vdkxdb2: diff for NMU version 2.4.0-3.1
tags 553125 + patch pending thanks Dear maintainer, I've prepared an NMU for vdkxdb2 (versioned as 2.4.0-3.1) and uploaded it to DELAYED/3, according to devref §5.11.1. The patch, which you can find attached, fixes the invocation order of some dh_* scripts, in particular it moves dh_installdeb past dh_makeshlibs, so that the ldconfig postinst snippet generated by the latter is actually installed in the resulting .deb. Bug#557065: [PATCH/FYI git-core] Fill out copyright file
I was curious about what other licenses git uses, so I did a quick scan for copyright headers. The outcome is here in the form of a patch, but please do not be misled: I hope you do not apply this. All of git is available under the GPLv2, but some portions from other projects have more permissive licenses. This patch documents them. The good: * It’s probably worth being explicit about debian/* being GPL-2. The bad: * This makes it harder to read the copyright file from beginning to end, yet does not reveal any new permissions that would be useful to anyone. * Including these changes would create an implicit promise to keep documenting the copyright with this level of detail. That would be insane. So this is mostly for amusement value. If you are not amused, sorry. :) debian/copyright | 209 +- 1 files changed, 207 insertions(+), 2 deletions(-) diff --git a/debian/copyright b/debian/copyright index 1eb4636..a734da1 100644 --- a/debian/copyright +++ b/debian/copyright @@ -1,5 +1,5 @@ -Format-Specification: http://wiki.debian.org/Proposals/CopyrightFormat -Original-Source: http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/ +Format-Specification: http://dep.debian.net/deps/dep5/ +Source: http://www.kernel.org/pub/software/scm/git/ Files: * Copyright: © 2005-2009, Linus Torvalds and others. @@ -32,10 +32,215 @@ License: LGPL-2.1+ On Debian systems, the complete text of the GNU Lesser General Public License can be found in /usr/share/common-licenses/LGPL-2.1. +Files: git-gui/* +Copyright: © 2006-2008, Shawn Pearce, et al. +License: GPL-2+ + +Files: git-gui/po/de.po, git-gui/po/fr.po, git-gui/po/glossary/* +Copyright: © 2007-2008, Shawn Pearce, et al. +License: GPL-2 + This file is distributed under the same license as the git package. + +Files: git-svn.perl +Copyright: © 2006, Eric Wong normalper...@yhbt.net +License: GPL-2+ + +Files: gitk-git/* +Copyright: © 2005-2008, Paul Mackerras, et al. +License: GPL-2+ + This program is free software; it may be used, copied, modified + and distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public Licence, + either version 2, or (at your option) any later version. + . + On Debian systems, the complete text of the GNU General Public License + can be found in /usr/share/common-licenses/GPL-2. + +Files: imap-send.c +Copyright: © 2000-2002, Michael R. Bug#556914: [iceweasel] after closing, iceweasel process remains active and using 90% CPU
reassign 556914 kdebase-runtime subscribe 556914 gland...@debian.org thanks Thanks. So here is what seems to be happening: the oxygen kde plugin has a destructor function that does some cleanup, during which it needs to send some requests to the X server to free pixmaps. Except that by the time you reach there, the connection to the X server is long gone. So the poll() call returns an error and is retried indefinitely. It seems to me the problem lies in the oxygen plugin, which shouldn't be doing this, but it could also very well be lower in the stack. It could be interesting to see what exactly is retrying to poll() indefinitely, because that could be a separate bug, too. I'll leave the rest of the investigation up to the kdebase-runtime maintainer(s) (that is the package holding the oxygen plugin), but I'm staying subscribed to this bug out of curiosity (and if help is needed, I'm here, too ;) ). Including useful information in bug report is usually better than just ranting. If I wanted to install geeqie, I'd done an apt-get install geeqie It was a very rude surprise to have one of my most-used programs be magically changed to a different program by an update. You basically have two options: - Preseed a correct answer to grub-pc's question. Then future upgrades of grub-pc will become effective instead of the crap we have now, in which users report us critical bugs for code in /boot/grub/ that just happens to be out of sync with the package. - Let grub-pc ask its question and run grub-install by itself. Bug#379166: closed by Peter S Galbraith p...@debian.org (Re: Bug#379166: imgsizer: man page has broken markup)
For example: -n, --no-overwwrite, .SH DESCRIPTION For updates, see http://www.catb.org/~esr: http://www.catb.org/~esr In the synopsis, the short options and --no-overwrite are emboldened but --document-root, --version and --help are not. Under OPTIONS, the first few options are not displayed at all. -no-overwwrite is spelt incorrectly (two w's). I presume that before the text This script will try create (surely try to create?) there should be a heading, since this is no longer describing the options. For Debian, the last paragraph before NOTE, starting This script is written in Python can be removed, except for the last sentence, as the rest of the paragraph just describes dependencies, which have no place in a man page, and in any case are automatically satisfied in Debian. In the SEE ALSO section, rdjpgcom(1) is not emboldened but the other two referenced man pages are. Those are all the errors I find on a quick readthrough; fixing them would be a good start. -- http://rrt.sc3d.org Mon peu de succès près des femmes est toujours venu de les trop aimer (Rousseau) -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#557003: libc6: DNS queries are extremely slowed by ipv6
On Thu, Nov 19, 2009 at 12:03 AM, Aurelien Jarno aurel...@aurel32.net wrote: On Wed, Nov 18, 2009 at 09:40:03PM +, Pedro Ribeiro wrote: Package: libc6 Version: 2.10.1-7 Severity: important When using Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera, Synaptic and other applications which use DNS, I always have to wait a long time (2 to 10 seconds) for a host to resolve (i.e. messages like Resolving host, Looking up http://whatever;, etc). I always thought that this was a problem of my internet connection. I could never track the origin of it until finally like 2 hours ago I stumbled across this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glibc/+bug/417757 To test if I had this problem, I opened up Firefox and got to about:config, entered ipv6 and set network.dns.disableIPv6 to false. Immediately, every DNS query was extremely fast and browsing was up to par to my high speed internet connection. To do a definite test, I added ipv6_disable=1 to my kernel command line and after that all the applications above were having much faster DNS queries. This is a rather serious bug that I have been experiencing ever since upgrading to testing (right after lenny's release), and always blamed on my ISP/wireless connection/configuration/etc, while finding it strange that every Mac or Windows PC near me using the same connection appeared to be much faster on DNS queries. I guess there must be much more users affected by this and like me, they have no clue why. It may be caused by a recent version of libc6, because the bug above is marked as karmic regression (the latest ubuntu is the karmic one, 9.10) and a friend of mine who is using lenny doesn't appear to have the same problem. Pardon me if this as already been reported, I searched around but could not find a Debian version of this bug. Does adding options single-request to /etc/resolv.conf fixes your problems? If so, it is due to a broken DNS server on your ISP side, and a bug in Firefox and other application which explicitely ask to resolve IPv6 adresses by not passing AI_ADDRCONFIG to getaddrinfo(). -- Aurelien Jarno GPG: 1024D/F1BCDB73 aurel...@aurel32.net http://www.aurel32.net Hi, you are right! It does solve my problem. But the strange thing is that I moved to another country in the last 2 months, but I've had this problem in my previous country also. So I guess its an application and not a DNS problem? What do you think I should do, file a bug with all the respective applications, or just wait for the Ubuntu bug to go upstream / sort itself out? For now, I disabled ipv6 (I don't need it anyway) through the modprobe blacklist. Hello Carl, sorry to bother you again with an off-topic question (not referring to this bug report)---I simply do not know whom else to ask / where else to post it: I can see no difference between hintfull and hintmedium, but a large difference between hintmedium and hintslight, but it is actually a true in- between of hintfull and hintslight I am searching for. Meaning: hintmedium / hintfull hints too strong for me (actually I like the strong hinting when it comes to single letters, but it destroyes my kerning in the whole text---at least for larger fonts in the browser) and hintslight is too weak (the kerning looks great, but the letter become way to fuzzy / unsharp). Can this be the case (that there is no true option hintmedium and it is automatically interpreted as hintfull)? I worked around it for now in the following way: ?xml version='1.0'? !DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM 'fonts.dtd' fontconfig match target=font edit mode=assign name=rgba constrgb/const /edit /match match target=font edit mode=assign name=hinting booltrue/bool /edit /match match target=font edit mode=assign name=hintstyle consthintmedium/const /edit /match match target=font edit mode=assign name=lcdfilter constlcddefault/const /edit /match match target=font test compare=not_eq name=slant qual=any constroman/const /test test compare=less name=weight constmedium/const /test edit mode=assign name=hintstyle consthintslight/const /edit /match match target=font edit mode=assign name=antialias booltrue/bool /edit /match match target=font test compare=more_eq name=size qual=any double10/double /test edit mode=assign name=hintstyle consthintslight/const /edit /match match target=font test compare=more_eq name=pixelsize qual=any double16/double /test edit mode=assign name=hintstyle consthintslight/const /edit /match /fontconfig Sorry for the annoying perfectionism, micu -- GnuPG: https://www1.inf.tu-dresden.de/~s3418892/micuintus.asc Fingerprint:1A15 A480 1F8B 07F6 9D12 3426 CEFE 7455 E4CB 4E80 / https://wiki.c3d2.de/Benutzer:Micuintus -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#557003: libc6: DNS queries are extremely slowed by ipv6

So I guess its an application and not a DNS problem? Are you using the same modem/router and using it as a DNS server? What do you think I should do, file a bug with all the respective applications, or just wait for the Ubuntu bug to go upstream / sort itself out? There is no real plan to fix it. Bug#500501: More detailed analysis
Hi, Please see more detailed analysis in bug #555922 that I filed against libc (because in fact sed's regex implementation is based on, or is a copy of libc's one and this bug affects many more packages). In my opinion, the proper solution for sed would be: 1. --binary option should throw sed in a true binary mode without any knowledge of UTF-8 or any other multibyte encodings. This would allow to process binary files without any UTF-8 logic. And this would allow direct manipulation of ill-formed UTF-8 sequences in cases when it is required. The Unicode standard notes one such situation ([1], page 62): For example, a UTF-8 file could have had CRLF sequences introduced at every 80 bytes by a bad mailer program. This could result in some UTF-8 byte sequences being interrupted by CRLFs, producing illegal byte sequences. This mangled text is no longer UTF-8. It is permissible for a conformant program to repair such text, recognizing that the mangled text was originally well-formed UTF-8 byte sequences. By introducing a true binary mode, one could write a sed script for such purpose. 2. Otherwise, if input encoding is UTF-8, all input text should be processed with a conformat UTF-8 decoder and all ill-formed sequences should be replaced with replacement character. The result is passed to the current implementation of regexes. But now we would have a guarantee that a sed script can process any input in an expected way. It can even match ill-formed sequences by matching the replacement character. Bug#555680: System information in bug reports may be security-sensitive
Hi r14441 [1], hide wireless keys and wake-on-LAN password when including network configuration in bug reports (bug #555680). It is unfortunately not enough to prune wireless-key from bugreports, as wpasupplicant defines additional means to configure passwords for wireless links[2], namely wpa-psk and wpa-password. I said most sane window managers. In the latter case, try setting the _JAVA_AWT_WM_NONREPARENTING environment variable.
