So, is there a way to get it work? I don't see how the file is already
locked.

After Squeeze. But I'd like to fix the problem without disabling tests
on hurd. In the meantime, try rebuilding with Debug::NoLocking set to
true in apt.conf.

Bug#610588: libmad0: garbled sound on amd64 in debian/testing

2011-01-19 Thread Adrian Kiess
Package: libmad0
Version: 0.15.1b-5
Severity: normal

Dear sir,

using the latest libmad0 in debian/testing (version 0.15.1b-5) on amd64, Gxine
and Mplayer are
producing garbled sound output on my ASUS Xonar USB soundcard.

Various Video players are producing a humming, cruching sound.

Playing sound in rhuthmbox and audacious2 works fine though.

GXinei, when using liibfaad0 instead of libmad0 works fine also.

Sincerely

Adrian

I upgraded from Lenny to Squeeze without getting any problem. But after the

user name and password, system resets itself. I also cannot pass console
screens by pressing keys at this state. If I power cycle the
desktop PC and don't enter user name/pass at the KDM screen, then I can switch
with . I tried to downgrade to lenny at this stage but nothing has
changed. So; I had to install a clean Lenny system and I'm sorry I forgot to
take "installation record" before the installation.

Bug#608284: RFS: xhtmlrenderer (new package, needed to package Grails)

2011-01-19 Thread tony mancill
Hi Miguel,

In lieu of a new upstream release, an email from the upstream clarifying
the license for those files could be added to debian/copyright would
probably be sufficient. Another option would be to drop the files under
./test/ in a DFSG version of the tarball. Andrew Ross did this recently
for another package I sponsored.

Cheers,
tony

Okay thanks, I'll do that then. I assume you meant remove the
XFree86LOADER macro (which I've read may be on its way out of Xorg)
check as well.

Yeah, I saw that on the Moblin repository. Eventually I'll contact the
gma500 team on Launchpad about it, as they seem to be getting (albeit
rather stale) updates from somewhere... I'm more focused on just getting
this to work for now though.

I know Intel is pushing IEGD or EMGD or whatever new set of
mixed-license drivers they're adding to the fray, but no one seems to
have much faith in those efforts (and it sounds like they're even less
free). And apparently maintainers have gotten the existing drivers
working with Xorg 1.{7,8,9} in at least Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, and
Arch Linux. As you said, there may be problems getting the binary Xpsb
GLX sub-module to load in Xorg >= 1.7, but it appears that people have
made it work (or are at least packaging it for their distributions
regardless). Though personally I'd be happy just with framebuffer-less
rendering and backlight control, just to save my battery.

Also, xserver-xorg-video-psb *shouldn't* need the firmware or Xpsb
binaries. I noticed that it does probe for the Xpsb sub-module, but when
it doesn't find it it'll continue on without it and let you know that 3D
and video acceleration won't work. The metapackages on the gma500 PPA
seem to verify this, letting users install only the free drivers to at
least get 2D acceleration. A commenter on the blog of Adam Williamson
(who's gotten these drivers working in Fedora) also reported success
with only the free drivers. I haven't gotten to the point to be able to
try this myself though, and I'm not sure what specific requirements your
system might have to require Xpsb.

I'm slowly getting xserver-xorg-video-psb to load in Xorg 1.7, and I'm
tweaking a configuration file to work around issues like the
LVDS-connected monitor of my Acer Aspire One AO751h not being detected
with ACPI. But Xorg is now aborting on a segmentation fault "at address
(nil)" and I can't seem to get debugging symbols in the backtrace. The
fault is probably caused by a mangled pointer bug that's fixed by some
patch that I haven't applied to my driver. I'll probably install drivers
from the gma500 PPA on a test installation of Squeeze to see that
everything works. If it does, then I can start from scratch and be less
conservative in my patchwork, referring to the work in other
distributions to fix any bugs there may be.

Thanks,
P. J.

Bug#533027: TtH license.txt

2011-01-19 Thread Ian Maclaine-cross
Ian Hutchinson
Author of TtH

Hi,

Thank you for writing and making TtH freely available and for replying
promptly to my emails over the years. I am still the Debian
Organization's maintainer for its package tth.

For legal reasons Debian can only make software like TtH available for
all supported architectures and operating systems if free software
licenses are explicit and detailed. The shortest version of such a
license is the "expat" or "MIT" license.

In attached file expat.txt I have shown how the "expat" license
would look for TtH. Please consider renaming this as license.txt in the
next version of tth_C.tgz.

It looks like a bug in your program:

The initialization order of file-scope objects in different files is
undefined, and the variable "g_Application" is apparently being
initialized before the variable "foo". So Application::Application is
called while foo is in a bogus state.

Yeah, I thought about that, but it appears as though finish-install wants to
own all those sorts of things itself. I would have expected
50config-target-network to be in netcfg, but it's not. On the other hand,
if that's more of a historical screwup, moving it (and the
currently-hypothetical release-dhcp-lease) to netcfg isn't something I'm
philosophically opposed to).

I'd say that the first bug should be dealt in netcfgwhich should
provide the appropriate finish-install.d hook

Bug#610381: git-import-dsc: lies about commit date

For what it's worth, I believe having current committer dates also
alters the way gitk sorts its display. I noticed this when I was trying
to retroactively build a Debian Guile repository based off of (and
integrated with) the upstream tree (which itself was created by a
cvs->git tool).

Perhaps intent matters. In my case, I really was trying to create
branches as if they'd existed all along, possibly the same thing people
are trying to do when they use repository conversion tools.

If you're using Debian, the necessary blob is in the firmware-realtek
package.

It's a known problem with calls to request_firmware() when userland is
not running (early initialisation or resume from sleep). It may be
fixable.

Bug#609538: r8169: long delay during resume

2011-01-19 Thread Daniel J Blueman
When resuming from suspended with 2.6.38-rc1 with my RTL8168d/8111d
hardware, I see significant delays [1].

The only firmware I see in /lib/firmware is RTL8192E, thus it looks
like this is due to it being not present.

I see that Francois' patch is present in 2.6.38-rc1; is there a way to
avoid this delay, or is this likely in request_firmware?

Thanks,
  Daniel

Bug#506788: xml2: 2csv and csv2 options

2011-01-19 Thread Hamish
Package: xml2
Version: 0.4-2
Followup-For: Bug #506788

Hi,

by examining the source code I've been able to figure out a little more about
these two
undocumented commands.

both take -q and -d options to set the quoting char and the delimiter char.
e.g. to quote with a single char and a pipe for the delimiter: -q"'" -d'|'

csv2 takes an additional -f flag which does something with the first record

usage of 2csv: the 'record' option is the base string, NOT starting with /,
the fields are the "subdirs" under that you want to output.
It seems to get lost if the "record" string is non-unique, e.g. below if I
use 'event' as the record string it gets lost because of 'eventParameters',
but if I use 'origin' that's ok because it's not a substring of anything else.
using the whole thing back to the start (expect the leading / at the start of
the line) seems the safest thing to do.

for example, an extract of XML earthquakes from GNS NZ:

URL="http://magma.geonet.org.nz/services/quake/quakeml/1.0.1/query?";
END_DATE=`date --utc +%FT%T`
START_DATE=`date --utc --date="last week" +%FT%T`
wget -nv -O latest_gns_quakes.xml -nv \
   "${URL}startDate=$START_DATE&endDate=$END_DATE"

"""
1 record of data (1 earthquake event) from that looks like this after going
through xml2:
/quakeml/eventParameters/event
/quakeml/eventParameters/event/@publicID=smi:geonet.org.nz/event/3446915g

Indeed, the package from experimental doesn't have it.

the pointer color is correct (red). On another machine where I use

That can probably be arranged. It covers two separate packages, so I'm
going to clone out this report to get it fixed everywhere (finish-install
for regular completion, and di-utils-reboot for "Abort the installation").
di-utils-exit-installer ("Exit the installer") is only used in installer
demos, apparently, so that probably doesn't need to be changed.

(Note to implementors: example code for wiping out the DHCP client is in
netcfg/killall.sh; only minor adaptations should be required, although it
appears that different DHCP clients use different methods to signal release,
so that'll complicate matters)

However...

That must make life *really* entertaining for the ISP's support staff after
an area-wide power outage. It also appears to be in contravention of a
quick skim of RFC2131, since there's no requirement for clients to send a
DHCPRELEASE. Section 4.4.6 states, "Note that the correct operation of DHCP
does not depend on the transmission of DHCPRELEASE messages." I wonder what
other brokenness your ISP is hiding...

Are you using core X pointers, or a set of themed pointers?

Bug#610526: Preseed: Debian Installer ignores hostname parameter

2011-01-19 Thread Matthew Palmer
package netcfg
tag 610526 +moreinfo
tag 610526 +unreproducible
thanks

Hi Dennis,

I'm having some trouble reproducing your bug report.

Here are the exact steps I took:

1) Download the mini.iso from
http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/debian/dists/lenny/main/installer-i386/20090123lenny8/images/netboot/
(other mirrors should have the same; md5sum is
1f497d52bb97c03810d3e87d8ecf5d94)

2) Boot the installer ISO in a KVM VM

3) At the graphical isolinux boot screen, press TAB and add 'hostname=basic'
to the end of the command line

(I can't use priority=critical because I need to set a local Debian mirror,
and auto=true just asks for a preseed file -- which I don't have because you
haven't provided it)

4) Manually configure the network (I disabled my DHCP server so that it
wouldn't provide a hostname) with an IP address that doesn't reverse resolve
(to avoid hostname being overridden via rDNS)

5) When it asks to configure the mirror, drop into a console and verify that
the temporary environment has the right hostname with cat /etc/hostname

6) Let the installation proceed, automatically partitioning the disk and
setting up some dummy users

7) When it comes to installing grub, drop back to a console and verify that
the target environment has the right hostname with cat /target/etc/hostname

8) Complete the install, reboot, note that the booted system has the correct
hostname.

Now, I know that a number of things are different between your report and my
method of reproduction, but they *should* (big emphasis there) be irrelevant
to how the hostname is preseeded. Obviously one of them isn't irrelevant,
so we need to work out what it is.

Things to check:

* The kernel and initrd you're booting with; can I get the md5sums of them
and where you got them from?

* Booting without a preseed file... it's possible that your preseed file is
doing something hinky, so if you *must* test with a preseed file, we'll
  need a copy of it.

* Dropping priority=critical for the purposes of testing would be
good, too, to keep things consistent and to rule it out (although early
testing showed that /etc/hostname had the right value in it).

Thanks,
- Matt

There's bogus code there indeed:

#ifdef O_IGNORE_CTTY
if (!ctty)
/* Open the terminal device. Don't recognize it as our
controlling terminal, and don't make it the controlling tty
if we don't have one at the moment. */
  fd = emacs_open (name, O_RDWR | O_IGNORE_CTTY | O_NOCTTY, 0);

defined on Hurd. On other systems, we need to explicitly
dissociate ourselves from the controlling tty when we want to
open a frame on the same terminal. */
  fd = emacs_open (name, O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY, 0);
#endif /* O_IGNORE_CTTY */

tty->name = xstrdup (name);

When O_IGNORE_CTTY is defined (which is the case only on GNU/Hurd...),
the else branch is actually tty->name = xstrdup(name); ... The obvious
fix is attached.

I took a look into the build problem and found out that the best way
should be to just remove the two failing files test_progress.py and

Modifying rules this way completely disables the tests under Hurd until
the file locking problem is solved, but is building the .debs properly.
I even tried to create a patch by cresting a patches directory and add a
patch there, but that will be for later, I'm not yet fluent in creating,
modifying or patching Debian packages.

However, I did some studies on how to create a patch but was confused by
which tool to use, dpatch or quilt, package file format version etc. It
looks like the source format 3.0 (quilt) is not used for python-apt but
how to figure it out? No patches directory is present under the debian/
directory.

Reproducing it is trivial: once you're done with tracking down a gdm3
bug, decide to run “aptitude purge gdm3” while you're still logged in,
and there you go.

I have added some the other day.

Dennis, can you confirm that

d-i console-keymaps-at/keymap select us
d-i keyboard-configuration/xkb-keymap select us

is enough?

> I'm unsure where the example-preseed.txt file which you mention comes

It's generated from the installation guide:

./build/buildweb.sh:./preseed.pl -r $manual_release $PRESEED
>$destination/example-preseed.txt

That just needs to get done to update the file mentioned above.

Samuel

Tada, you lost already.

To narrow it down:
 * Restart gdm3
 * Attach gdm-simple-greeter:
 gdb attach $(pidof gdm-simple-greeter)
 b gdm_layout_activate
 c
 * Pick a user, notice the password prompt doesn't show
   up. Breakpoint's been reached.
 * p *config → options is 0.

Unsurprisingly, gui/simple-greeter/gdm-layouts.c says:

You could try adding xen_emul_unplug=never to the kernel command line.
This will prevent the pvhvm drivers from initialising and may allow you
to make progress using the emulated devices.

You should also ensure you are running the most recent XenServer
release.

You could also consider running Squeeze in PV mode instead of PVonHVM.
AIUI this is available as an experimental feature in the latest
XenServer FP release.

If that doesn't work then I think you need to contact XenServer support
or make use of the XenServer forums.

Bug#610571: /etc/init.d/no-ip is missing LSB tags and overrides

2011-01-19 Thread Blake Miner
Package: no-ip
Version: 2.1.1-4+etch1
Severity: normal

LSB headers are missing in the no-ip init.d configuration script and causes a
warning when sysv-rc is being configured.

To be able to check boot script order, and also to be able to start
boot scripts in parallel, it is important to know the dependencies of
the various boot scripts. The Linux Software Base specifies a init.d
header file format useful for this purpose, and adding such header to
the libdevmapper init.d script would make it possible for me to use
this information to check the current sequence and speed up the debian
boot.

http://refspecs.freestandards.org/LSB_2.1.0/LSB-generic/LSB-generic/initscrcomconv.html>
documents the LSB header format.

Bug#579859: ITP: clementine -- Music player and library organizer

2011-01-19 Thread Thomas PIERSON
Hi,

Some news from Clementine packaging.

As you could see, there is still no Clementine package in Debian archive cause
of blocking issues about embedded libraries present in Clementine source code.

This is not a problem for Ubuntu but it is forbidden by Debian policy. This is
the reason why a package was already available in Ubuntu but not yet in
Debian.

Actually, there 2 major libraries that need to be packaged to satisfy
Clementine depends and Debian policy : libqxt and libechonest.

I took the ITP of libqxt and I built a first experimental package. [1]
Maybe I will have to package libechonest too but for the moment I focus on
libqxt.

All of my packaging works is published on GIT repositories [2]. I am using
git-buildpackage tool for packaging.
So don't hesitate to clone these and send me patches or bundles if you look
forward Clementine raise Debian archive.

This is a basic functionality of a picture viewer (and rotating

severity important.

Hi Yuri,

thanks for the report. I cannot reproduce this behaviour here (i386,
debian squeeze). What computer architecture are you running? Are you
using unstable or testing?

Bug#434034: memtest boot options

2011-01-19 Thread Matt Taggart
Regarding Russell's previous comment in #434034 about memtest86+ boot
options

1) The memtest86+ ships with two versions, one for grub2. See
  /usr/share/doc/memtest86+/README.Debian
  for more info.

2) It does support some options, for example to boot serial
   "console=ttyS0,115200n8"
I use d-i in serial mode often and it works well, it would be nice to
also be able to boot memtest86+ in serial mode as well. For me 95% of
the time the above console line is what I need, but I do have some
cases where I need different settings, so being able to specify them
  would be good.

I will, I will! ;)

So I guess we go for the following. Is it verbose enough ?

/*
 * __u64_packed_aligned:
 *
 * Forces gcc to use the u64 type alignment, up-aligning or down-aligning the
 * target type if necessary. The memory accesses to the target structure are
 * efficient (does not require bytewise memory accesses) and the atomic pointer
 * update guarantees required by RCU are kept. u64 is considered as the largest
 * type that can generate a trap for unaligned accesses (u64 on sparc32 needs to
 * be aligned on 64-bit).
 *
 * Specifying both "packed" and "aligned" generates decent code (without the
 * bytewise memory accesses generated by simply using "packed"), and forces
 * gcc to down-align the structure alignment to the alignment of a u64 type.
 *
 * This alignment should be used for both structure definitions and declarations
 * (as *both* the type and variable attribute) when using the "section"
 * attribute to generate arrays of structures.
 */
#define __u64_packed_aligned \
__attribute__((__packed__, __aligned__(__alignof__(long long

Thanks,

Mathieu

>From the SPARC V8 manual (this is the 32 bit version of SPARC):

Load/Store Instructions

...
Integer load and store instructions support byte (8-bit), halfword
(16-bit), word
(32-bit), and doubleword (64-bit) accesses.
...

Alignment Restrictions

Halfword accesses must be aligned on a 2-byte boundary, word accesses (which
include instruction fetches) must be aligned on a 4-byte boundary, and
doubleword
accesses must be aligned on an 8-byte boundary. An improperly aligned
address causes a load or store instruction to generate a
mem_address_not_aligned
trap.

Bug#610563: debian-goodies: no need for hard-coded dependency on less

2011-01-19 Thread Justin B Rye
Package: debian-goodies
Version: 0.53
Severity: wishlist

Also found in 0.55, which is what my patch is against.

debian-goodies Depends: on "less" solely because debmany hardcodes
that particular pager as the handler for non-manpages. Other pagers
such as "most" work equally well for this role, so rather than force
users to name their favourite $PAGER all over again via an -o option
why not take advantage of the fact you're on a Debian system and
invoke the "pager" alternative, or pull in "sensible-utils" instead
of "less" and invoke "sensible-pager"?

Since I needed to tweak the --help output and manpage slightly I've
fixed some trivial non-native-speakerisms in the English version.
(I hope patching a legacy-encoded German manpage won't break it.)

Bug#607145: Wrong encoding.

2011-01-19 Thread Raúl Sánchez Siles
  Hello:

I'm not reopening this in case I'm wrong, but I think the .po file encoding

In fact, opening either the Javier's initially attached .po file:
 or the
Christian one I needed to set the
encoding to iso-8859-15 to properly see non-ascii chars.

Please, let me know if you need further checking. Thanks and regards,

Sparc 32-bit (and I believe MIPS 32-bit as well) have such 64-bit
load and store instructions.

I have just uploaded a new package for spip that fixes two recent security
issues (#609212 and #610016).

The update consists in the addition of a single file named ecran_securite.php
(security screen) which is designed with the sole purpose of fixing known
security issues in spip.

The file is documented there:
  http://www.spip.net/en_article4201.html

I have contacted upstream to ask them whether this was good enough to consider
the security issues as fixed and they replied in the affirmative.

Thus, I kindly request the unblocking of spip 2.1.1-3 and its migration to
testing in the purpose of shipping a fixed spip package in Debian squeeze.

Thanks for your work and have a good day,
Romain

I still wonder how a 32-bit system can generate an unaligned access trap for an
access to a 64-bit variable aligned on 32-bit, given that there is, by
definition, no 64-bit memory accesses available on the architecture ?

Sparc 32-bit has 64-bit loads and stores, GCC uses them because the ABI
specifies that every structure is at least 8 byte aligned.

Amazing, if this works then do it.

Please see my explanation about the difference between "packed" and "packed,
aligned(4 or 8)" in the other thread. I share your concern about ugly code
generated by "packed", but my tests with a sparc32 gcc show that using both
packed and aligned attributes generate nice code.

I'd prefer to add the "packed" to ensure that gcc never decides for some odd
reason to use an alignment larger than the one we specify in the linker script.

Thanks,

Mathieu

Hrm, I'd like to see what kind of ill-conceived 32-bit architecture would
generate a unaligned access for a 32-bit aligned u64. Do you have examples in
mind ? By definition, the memory accesses should be at most 32-bit, no ? AFAIK,
gcc treats u64 as two distinct reads on all 32-bit architectures.

> If your suggestion defines the lowest possible alignment and GCC will
> do the right thing and "up-align" the structure if necessary, then
> fine.

Well, I must admit that my assumption is that aligning on the "long" size should
be the only alignment required, both on 32-bit and 64-bit. But I'm curious to
see if there are indeed architectures that break this assumption.

Ideally, I'd like to avoid letting gcc up-align a structure, because it is then
hard to know for sure what the alignment value of the section should be (in the
linker script, we can safely choose 32, but it's more a "safe choice" than
anything else). Moreover, I'm not convinced that gcc will choose to up-align the
structure with the exact same alignment values for both the type declaration and
the variable definition (I'm deeply distrusting gcc to do the right thing here).

gcc on my sparc64 box (32-bit userland) disagrees with you here ;) Using
gcc (Debian 4.3.3-14) 4.3.3, here is a demonstration that, indeed, "packed"
generates aweful code, but that "packed, aligned(4 or 8)" generates pretty
decent code:

Bug#609942: Please add Venezuela's SUSCERTE CA to ca-certificates

2011-01-19 Thread Muammar El Khatib
Package: ca-certificates
Version: 20090814+nmu2

Hi,

I'd like to second this request made by José Parella on adding Venezuela's
SUSCERTE CA to ca-certificates package in Debian.

SUSCERTE is the institution that was created due to the decree-law number 1.204
dated February 10th, 2001 in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. The function
of SUSCERTE is to coordinate and implement the hierarchical model of the
National infrastructure of Electronic Certification, it also accredits,
supervises, and controls the Providers of Certification Services. It is the
entity responsible of the authority of Root Certificates of Venezuelan State.¹

For all reasons mentioned above, I recommend and support the inclusion of
SUSCERTE CA.

The structure that gets placed in this section is the ftrace_event_call.
It consists only of pointers, a struct list_head, a couple of "int", and
a struct trace_event, which consists of: a struct hlist_node, a struct
list_head, an int, and a pointer.

None of these are more than "long" and I don't foresee them needing a
long long type. I think assuming that a long is the largest item should
due.

We can add a comment next to these structures specifying this
dependency, and hopefully it would be updated if we ever do include a
long long in them.

This notebook (unfortunately) has a r8196 based network card, which
requires non-free firmware. the stock installer-image asks for this
firmware (rtl8168d-2.fw). i found this firmware and put it on the
usb-stick. after that the installer does not ask for the firmware
anymore, and dmesg shows that it has loaded the firmware and actually
started the driver (link up etc). however dhcp config over the network
fails, as does anything else.

after tips from #debian-boot i replaced the r8169.ko that the installer
loads with the one from linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64_2.6.32-30_amd64.deb,
which makes the installer work and configure the network correctly. so
it seems that version of the driver is better than the older one...

any questions or anything i shoudl try: holler

As I mentioned in another reply, we should not be using packed.

Packed has other implications, which makes it use byte-at-a-time accesses
for all parts of a structure when you tag it with 'packed'. GCC doesn't
try to be clever and see that actually such accesses are safe.

If plain "__long_aligned" works and, since you're tagging it to the structure
definition, it only specifies a minimum-alignment, then I'm fine with using
that to fix this.

Bug#610559: wxmaxima fails to support CUA editing keys

2011-01-19 Thread Jeff Teunissen
Package: wxmaxima

Severity: normal
Tags: upstream patch

The IBM/Windows Common User Access editing keys (Shift+Del for cut, Shift+Ins
for
paste, Ctrl+Ins for copy), which work almost everywhere, don't work in
wxMaxima. Worse, the failure mode is destructive -- that is, Shift+Del deletes
rather than cuts, so when the user tries to paste what he/she thought was cut,
all that shows up is the "ł" (U+0142) character (the two-byte key code for
Insert)...and because wxMaxima has only one level of undo, "pasting" has just
irrevocably erased what the user thought had been cut to the clipboard.

Included is a short patch to enable the expected functionality.

My concern is that if there is ever a u64 or similarly "long long"
typed member in these tracing structures, it will not be aligned
sufficiently to avoid unaligned access traps on 32-bit systems.

If your suggestion defines the lowest possible alignment and GCC will
do the right thing and "up-align" the structure if necessary, then
fine.

If you add "packed" it is going to screw everything up and we'll
essentially be back to square one.

On RISC like sparc64, "packed" causes even 16-bit words to be read and
written a byte at a time.

Never use "packed" under any circumstances unless absolutely
unavoidable.
