GNU tar indeed does not understand `x' (or any other lower-case letter) as a
valid file type. See the thread starting at
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel/2004/04/msg01376.html for a fuller
discussion.

It isn't in said list, as
http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/search_packages.pl?searchon=names&version
=all&exact=1&keywords=gaim-gnome will show.

In fact, there have been no gaim-gnome packages in unstable for nearly two
years. They were removed on 19 February 2003.

Either the submitter has stable sources in their sources.list, or is using a
very badly broken mirror.

As far as I can see, this is due to the fact that the contents file for
testing/AMD64 is currently empty - see
http://amd64.debian.net/debian-amd64/dists/testing/Contents-amd64.gz. There
is a a "Contents-amd64.gz.new" at the same location, but that's not publicly
readable.

This looks like it needs fixing by the ftpmasters of the AMD64 archive, so
I've cc:ed them.

There's no reason at all why any security.d.o mirror needs to contain a
folder which isn't part of the security infrastructure.

194.109.137.218 is klecker.debian.org, a.k.a. non-us.debian.org, which is
the only reason it *does* possess that folder.

(Aside from which, non-US is depracated as of the Sarge release, and will
disappear as of Etch).

The current Release.gpg files in the security archive are signed by a
current key, specifically:

pub 1024D/4F368D5D 2005-01-31 [expires: 2006-01-31]
  Key fingerprint = 4C7A 8E5E 9454 FE3F AE1E 78AD F1D5 3D8C 4F36 8D5D
uid Debian Archive Automatic Signing Key (2005) <[EMAIL
PROTECTED]>

The Release.gpg files in the non-US archive appear to be signed by both
the 2004 and 2005 keys; I'm assuming these won't be updated further due
to the deprecation of non-US.

On the basis of the above, this report should imho be closed.

Adam

Indeed not, nor should it have.

kernel-image-2.4.27-1-686 is an entirely different package from
kernel-image-2.4.27-2-686. (The difference in the package names exists
for a reason and one does not necessarily want to automatically upgrade
a kernel to one with a different module abi).

The expanded version in that folder is indeed an older version (2.1).

/usr/share/doc/debian-policy/fhs-2.3.{html,pdf.gz,ps.gz,txt.gz} however are,
as their name suggests, version 2.3 of the standard, which is current.

The most likely reason for this arrangement is that Policy currently
requires adherence to version 2.1. There are already bugs open requesting
this to be updated, so I'm merging this.

Source packages are semi-automatically removed once they are no longer
responsible for building any binary package present in the archive. Bugs are
only normally necessary if for some reason the new package doesn't entirely
replace the old (e.g. the old package built the binaries for an architecture
that the new package doesn't).

Not an ftp-master, but yeah. ;-)

Bug severities have no effect on the order in which ftp.d.o bugs are dealt
with, so filing them as anything other than normal or wishlist is largely
pointless.

The long description was actually updated for roughly this reason last May,
to remove "testing individual packages"
root=webwml&r1=1.4&r2=1.5).

As I understand it, the purpose of the list is to find issues with "testing"
relating to upgrading to it from stable or trying to install it afresh (as
this would obviously be required to work once testing became stable).

It should be fairly trivial for a single distribution and architecture,
given an appropriate deb-src line in sources.list (extending beyond a
single distribution would require some further work on the apt-cache
invocation), viz:

#!/bin/sh
BINPKGS="($(apt-cache showsrc $1 | egrep "^Binary:" | cut -d" " -f2- | \
  sed -e 's/, /|/g'))"
grep-dctrl -sPackage -e -FBuild-Depends "$BINPKGS" \
  /var/lib/apt/lists/*_Sources | sort -g | uniq

and pass it a source package name. Extending it to cope with binary
package names isn't particularly difficult.

The only problem with the line is the fact that a $ was missed out

Bug#345984: lsb: Allow package to be built on sarge

2006-01-04 Thread Adam D. Barratt

Version: 3.0-13
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

Hi,

The attached patch allows lsb to be built on a sarge system, and at least
lsb-base to be installed correctly on sarge (tested on i386). Obviously
lsb-core will be uninstallable without more work by the backporter due to
the glibc dependency.

The patch is based on the example in
http://lists.debian.org/debian-devel-announce/2005/06/msg00010.html; fwiw,
that post also states that the appropriate version of dpkg-dev to depend on
for the new DEB_* variables is 1.13.5, not 1.13.2.

fwiw, upstream development on exim 3 (i.e. the version represented by
the "exim" package) stopped over three years ago and the codebase is not
going to get any further changes.

However, a quick look through the 3.30 documentation gives the
following, which may be of use (from
http://www.exim.org/exim-html-3.30/doc/html/spec_11.html#IDX897):

Since Exim has no central queue manager, there is no way of
controlling the total number of simultaneous deliveries if the
configuration allows a delivery attempt as soon as a message is
received. If you want to control the total number of
deliveries on the system, you need to set the queue_only option,
which ensures that all incoming messages are simply added to the
queue. Then set up an Exim daemon to start queue runner
processes at appropriate intervals (probably fairly often, for
example, every minute), and limit the total number of queue
runners by setting the queue_run_max parameter. Because each
queue runner delivers only one message at a time, the maximum
number of deliveries that can then take place at once is
queue_run_max multiplied by remote_max_parallel.

Adam

To be precise you are asked if you want to *use* the smaller files.

It is not possible to only install conf.d/* in some circumstances, as they
are dpkg conffiles and shipped as part of the default exim4-config package.

Section 3.1 of Debian Policy is "The package name". I'm assuming you mean
section 3.1 of http://www.nl.debian.org/doc/packaging-manuals/menu.html/
("Debian Menu System"), which *isn't* policy.

That document appears to have last been updated three days ago. At the end
of March, the text in question read

Packages provided menu files should be in `/usr/lib/menu/'.
System-local menu files should be in `/etc/menu/'. User-specific menu
 files should be in `~/.menu/'

so, afaics, no this isn't "some new check added to lintian on purpose" and
it *doesn't* contradict Policy. What's happened is that the menu maintainers
have changed their recommendations as to where menu files should be placed.

This has previously been suggested a number of times against the clamav
package, as bug #250335 and the three others merged with it.

For this reason, /usr/share/doc/clamav-base/README.Debian.gz contains
details of how to integrate Clamav with sendmail, exim4 and Amavis.

IMHO, adding users to groups created by other packages isn't something
unrelated packages should be doing - even less so when one the vast
majority of new sarge and sid systems will be running exim4 but may
never be running clamav (or may have clamav added later, since exim4
will be installed by the installer).

Adam

Erm...? :-)

No, it shouldn't. It's entirely possible to (want to) install an
exim4-config package on a machine that doesn't run exim4 - for instance
in order to examine the configuration before upgrading the machine to
the exim4 packages using that configuration.

exim4-base correctly depends on a package providing one of the virtual
packages exim4-config{,-2}. The requirement is that installing exim4
ensures that an appropriate configuration is installed, not vice versa.

This is only the case on the first install of the dpkg package, when the
package is being configured. Since d-i does not use dpkg to install dpkg,
the postinst is never called with --configure, and as such an install using
d-i will not create the file.

> Also add /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg as conf file instead of copy in

> It is strange to see such vilolation package packing in package dpkg.

Policy does not require that /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg be a confile. The file is
only copied in postinst if dpkg was not previously installed, and the file
does not already exist.

This is by design, so that the installer can modify the contents of the file
if required. Since the file is never modified by the maintainer scripts
after the initial install, local modifications are respected, and there is
no need for it to be flagged as a conffile.

Neither dpkg-dev-el nor debian-el are provided by dpkg. dpkg knows
nothing about Emacs Lisp, yet alone its compiler warnings.

Not if you're using Debian's default install of bash you don't
(admittedly they're commented out by default, but...):

   # set PATH so it includes user's private bin if it exists
   if [ -d ~/bin ] ; then
   PATH=~/bin:"${PATH}"
   fi

More to the point, putting ~/bin last in PATH breaks most of the reasons
for having it there in the first place (being able to override
system-installed versions).

It's not at all ambiguous.

If you read the top of the page, there's a section headed "FILE FORMAT",
which specifies *exactly* what "SIZE" means, and how it can be specified.

IMHO, this bug should be closed due to user error, but I'll leave that to

This isn't a dpkg bug, as dpkg-reconfigure isn't part of dpkg.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -S /usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure
debconf: /usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure

This was also fixed yesterday in debconf 1.4.44. Based on the above

installed.

Bug#308478: passwd: Allowable characters in user/group names regex broken

2005-05-10 Thread Adam D. Barratt
Package: passwd
Version: 4.0.3-33
Severity: critical
Tags: sid
Justification: Breaks unrelated software (exim4 plus others)

Hi,

Between -32 and -33, a chunk of code from libmisc/chkname.c:good_name() was
moved in to 406_good_name.dpatch. Unfortunately, that file is currently
commented out in debian/patches/00list, and the patch is therefore not
applied.

This leads to an inability to install exim4, as the user/group name
"Debian-exim4" does not match upstream's regex ([a-z_][a-z0-9_-]*).

For example:

Adding system-user for exim (v4)
groupadd: Debian-exim is a not a valid group name
groupdel: group Debian-exim does not exist
dpkg: error processing exim4-config (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1

You reported this bug against exim over 18 months ago. The maintainer
could not reproduce the report at the time, no-one has reported a
similar problem since, and I cannot reproduce the issue with any version
of the exim packages currently in the Debian archive.

Are you still able to reproduce this? If you cannot confirm that the
problem still occurs, I propose to close this bug on or after August
27th.

This looks like a configuration error on your side (or at least
somewhere between you and ftp.d.o) on the basis that

- it works fine here (and presumably for everyone else who hasn't
reported a bug)

- ftp.debian.org is 128.101.80.133 and 208.185.25.35

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ wget -q -O- \
  http://128.101.80.133/debian/dists/testing/main/binary-i386/Packages |
\
  egrep -A10 '^Package: intltool-debian' | egrep '^(Version|Size)'

Version: 0.30+20040213
Size: 23514

(the result being identical across both servers, and both testing and
unstable package lists) and

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ wget -S
http://128.101.80.133/debian/pool/main/i/intltool-debian/intltool-debian_0.30+20040213_all.deb
 2>&1 | egrep '(Content-Length| saved )'

 7 Content-Length: 23514
20:32:29 (41.47 KB/s) - `intltool-debian_0.30+20040213_all.deb' saved
[23514/23514]

As far as I can see, everything matches (at least today :-)

Judging from http://ftp.debian.org/dists/etch/ all of the architectures'
Contents files have been regenerated in the past week. Assuming they
weren't processed manually, is it safe to assume that everything is now

Given that non-US has now been obsoleted, is it reasonable to assume
that this will never be implemented?

Is it still possible to do this, other than by waiting for etch to be
released, and therefore for woody to be removed from the archive? (I
have no idea whether there's any non-painful way to update oldstable,
and oldstable still obviously has the "matching source" requirement).

Hi,

Both of these bugs were fixed in an NMU nearly four years ago, and are
therefore currently open and tagged fixed. Given that they were fixed
upstream in 3.34 and the oldest version of exim in the archive is 3.35, they
can now be safely closed.

More specifically, the dependency is unneeded - this is already known by the
packagers.

build-essential's dependencies will always ensure that the correct version
on libstdc++-dev is installed.

That directory is used by exiscan to unpack files in to when the demime acl
condition is used (I assume also the decode condition in the MIME ACL). The
usual cause of files remaining there is a crashed or terminated instance of
exim/ClamAV/spamassassin which hasn't been able to tidy up after itself.

Sadly that's unlikely to work, as the directory contains a series of .eml
files containing the mails being scanned, together with their attachments in
individual files, rather than an exim format spool directory.

I suspect you're falling foul of the qmailq user being unable to read/write
the PID file. Solving the bug simply involves either giving the user r/w
access to the existing file, or moving it somewhere the user already has r/w
access.

By the way, /etc/default/spamassassin includes the following, which should
have been a rather large hint ;-)

--- quote from /e/d/spamassassin
# Pid file
# Where should spamd write its PID to file? If you use the -u or
# --username option above, this needs to be writable by that user.
# Otherwise, the init script will not be able to shut spamd down.
PIDFILE="/var/run/spamd.pid"

--- end quote from /e/d/spamassassin

According to http://gaim.sourceforge.net/security/ CAN-2005-096[5-7] were
all fixed in upstream's 1.2.1 release; settings tags appropriately. (fwiw,
as far as I can see 1:1.2.1-1 should be entering sarge in the next couple of
days, rendering this as a woody-only issue).

The changelog for 1:1.2.1-1 says

   * New upstream version. Fixes IRC escaping remote DOS problems, hence
medium
 priority.

which I would assume is a reference to CAN-2005-0966

That's a workaround, not a solution. The correct solution is to upgrade to
the fixed version of libpam-modules - the package that caused the problem -
which should hit mirrors tonight (0.79-2)

No. locales shouldn't, and more to the point *can't*, touch pam_env.conf, as
it belongs to an entirely different package.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg -S /etc/security/pam_env.conf
libpam-modules: /etc/security/pam_env.conf

(Hence the first paragraph above, and the fact that I reassigned and closed

No, $() should be supported by any POSIX-compliant shell; it's a "shall"
in the standard. See
http://www.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/009695399/utilities/xcu_chap02.html#tag_02_06_03

The ==, otoh, *is* non-compliant and a Bashism.

The examples are in python-apt, as they're not specific to the version of
python being used - likewise, python2.3-apt does not contain any examples.

It doesn't appear to be possible to install python-apt and python2.4-apt

Mea culpa. I misremembered the dependencies. I suspect I confused the python

You're hitting an undocumented feature of `apt-cache search'. It's
definitely a feature, as there are comments in the source code
indicating that it's supposed to happen. :-)

Specifically, search doesn't just examine package names, but also
virtual package names. apache-common Provides: libapache-mod-roaming,
which matches the supplied pattern. Try `apt-cache search --names-only
mail-tran', for instance.

It's that way because woody contains a single source package -
spamassassin - from which spamc was then split out. The dependency is there
to ensure that upgrades work, and there /is/ information about it in the BTS
:-) See #213979 and #178277 for example.

Those bugs do say the dependency will be downgraded after sarge's release,
so if nothing else it's a gentle prod for the maintainer. :)

The main reason that a dependency is inappropriate is that although spamc
needs to be able to connect to a spamasassin instance, that instance need
not be on the same machine as spamc (the same reason that, for instance,
squirrelmail only recommends an IMAP server, despite requiring one in order
to operate).

As far as I can see, the only URL that doesn't currently work is the
"Patches from BTS" link, which definitely needs encoding as described.

All the other links appear to work fine as they are -
http://packages.debian.org/libxml++2.6 and
http://bugs.debian.org/src:libxml++2.6 for instance are both handled
correctly by the relevant rewrite rules.

The message referred to above says:

"Joey Schulze from the Security Team offered to do an accumulative
security announce, covering all the amd64 packages which now get added
for all the past advisories[1], so expect one big DSA in the near future.
(ETA is Monday at the moment).
All new DSAs from now on will simply include amd64."

I'm assuming the cumulative announcement has been delayed for some
reason (although the above does only provide an ETA). Other than that,
the message is dated last Wednesday - there have been no security
updates for *any* architecture between then and now.

I'm afraid at the moment the best advice is to wait for a) the promised
cumulative announcement and/or b) the next standard DSA.

Adam

Bug#322366: Package has suddenly become Debian native

2005-08-10 Thread Adam D. Barratt
Package: nessus-plugins
Version: 2.2.5-1
Severity: minor

Hi,

The new version of the nessus-plugins package appears to have been uploaded
as a Debian native package. Previous versions of the package were not
native, and there is no mention in the changelog of this change being
intentional.

Adam

Bug#322365: Installs header files to incorrect location

2005-08-10 Thread Adam D. Barratt
Package: libnasl
Version: 2.2.5-1
Severity: grave

Hi,

As part of the update to debhelper compatibility version 4, a
libnasl-dev.install file was added to the package.

Unfortunately, an error was made in this file, leading to the header files
being installed in /usr/include/include/nessus, rather than
/usr/include/nessus. Thus, depending packages will FTBFS due to being unable
to locate the header files.

The following trivial patch fixes the problem.

That Google indexes pages containing broken English does not make that
English correct. :-)

The current wording certainly does not make sense in English. Either the
suggested wording or, for instance, "Conform strictly to POSIX" does.

Bug#323594: OpenVPN 2.0.1 released

You can't do that when opening a bug :-) Even if you could a) it wouldn't
work as control@ would have given up parsing on the "-BEGIN PGP SIGNED
MESSAGE-" line (the fifth without a command) and b) you can't merge bugs
of differing severities.

Fixing the found status with this mail (although not the merging, as that
would require making one of the bugs the wrong severity).

Adam
