Actually, it doesn't overwrite the files, it leaves the duplicate
files unmoved. Still weird behavior that could be explained better
to the user.

I've noticed the same behavior. I upgraded from Debian 11 to 12 and
transmission-daemon memory usage just goes up and up until my system starts
swapping hard and becomes unresponsive. This morning I caught it in the act
and saw it using 90% of 16G RAM. At some points, I noticed that
I have no idea. I assume upgrading transmission wouldn't ask me to keep an
older file here and I did not modify any of these files until I ran into
the issue. I did that test on a fresh install which rules out me messing up
the files :)
