I am getting the same problem with an Epson Stylus color 1520, I am on the
Testing distribution.
Any suggestions for narrowing the problem down? There seem to have been some
similar problems with Epson printers reported on Ubuntu, not just with the print

Er, what is the point of the testing distribution if it is not to try
applications in realistic use?

OK, I am now on kernel 2.6.21 and I am getting the same problem. Syslog now

in a root terminal
and it responded with:

I have been having the same problem. I have managed to get my system to mount
UDF CDs, sort of, after some considerable research and configuration - which
most users will not have the time or knowledge to do.
In order to mount UDF CDs the package udftools needs to be installed and

Whilst the first use of
apt-get upgrade
seems to work OK, the warning about not using aptitude for the
dist-upgrade stage seems to be inappropriate. The upgrade stage
upgrades aptitude to the squeeze version so it would seem that it can be
safely used from this point on.

Even if I did it would not help. Presumably NetworkManager works with a
kernel that uses external kernel modules. The problem I have is that it
is not working with a kernel that has the drivers compiled

As soon as you mentioned versions of udev I realised what the problem might be.
Aptitude was holding back upgrading udev because I still had
CONFIG_SYSFS_DEPRECATED compiled into the kernel. So I recompiled the kernel
with this disabled and NetworkManager now works.

I think this bug needs to be reclassified as important. It is throwing
up the same symptom as

Installation fails acpid: can't open /proc/acpi/event: No such file or

I have resolved my problem - I did not have /proc/acpi/event support
(config ACPI_PROC_EVENT) compiled into my kernel (as suggested by the
Debian supplied /usr/src/linux-source-2.6.26/drivers/acpi/Kconfig).

Thanks, installing the package gvfs-backends solved the problem.
Presumably this was to do with moving from GnomeVFS to gvfs and whatever I was

Thanks, it seems as if it may be bug#531734, though it is not obvious to me why.
Anyway, I will see if it solves the problem when gnome-terminal (2.26.2-2)
gets into testing.

I have retitled the bug as the only reason I tried to start it from the terminal
is that it did not start automatically and I was doing some problem solving.
So the issue is that the application stopped automatically running

This bug has come up on two different netbooks. The options in the kernel
configurations:
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE=y
CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION=y
are set.
The kernels are the latest 2.6.32 from Debian.
