Starting with version 1.2.0 CUPS will call any backend that is owned by
'root' and set to mode 0700 with full root privileges which should
enable CUPS-PDF to print to any destination.
I know Ubuntu to have modified CUPS (e.g. the web-admin interface is
disabled) but I cannot tell what other changes they did.
I strongly reccommend making CUPS-PDF mode 0700 again since this is
to-the-letter within the specifications of CUPS.

Ubuntu doesn't run CUPS as root, which is what prevents us from
outputting files to user directories with the backend as root:root
0700.

Sorry that we never got around to documenting this issue. As Sarge is
about to be replaced with Etch, I'm closing this request.

Is that issue at least documented in Etch release notes? i.e. is the
current filesystem hierarchy described? If not, closing this bug
really solves nothing.

Bug#167372: 15mb of gnome-games-data is what justifies the split

2006-08-29 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: gnome-games
Version: 1:2.14.3-1
Followup-For: Bug #167372

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

The real issue is the 15mb of dependencies from gnome-games-data. By the time
someone adds the 8mb or so of library dependencies, 20mb becomes a rather huge
waste of space, if someone only needed a game of solitaire.

Comparing to gnome-hearts, we notice that localisation files (and SVG images,
which are nowadays packaged separately in gnome-cards-data) don't take much
space. Rather, the issue is with the sound files that some games use and with
documentation that could easily be packaged separately. Thus, we see that a
really small gnome-card-games, without the sound files and documentation for
the other GNOME games, would make a LOT of sense.

A good compromise would be to split the card games (aisleriot, blackjack and
hearts) into their own gnome-card-games and gnome-card-games-data, then leave
other games in a gnome-games and gnoem-games-data that depends or recommends
gnome-card-games.

A good idea would also be to ensure that gnome-card-games would NOT depend
on Avahi and other extraneous stuff. Rather, it would ideally fit within a
basic GTK2 system.

I really think that this issue deserves to be discussed with upstream.

Actually, spelling works fine. From what I can tell, the hash building
script reports a failure, instead of a warning, if it finds words that
don't fit the sorting rules defined for that language. That is caused by
new words that upstream added since 0.99g1.

Bug#386545: console-setup: please add LSB formatted dependency info in init.d script

Package: console-setup

Severity: wishlist

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

To be able to check boot script order and also to be able to start
boot scripts in parallel, it is important to know the dependencies of
the various boot scripts. The Linux Software Base specifies a init.d
header file format useful for this purpose, and adding such header to
the sysklogd and klogd init.d script would make it possible for me to
use this information to check the current sequence and speed up the
debian boot.

Although this is not yet a release requirement for Etch, adding them
now will enable a smoother transition in the future.

Sorry, your bug report has nothing to do with CUPS-PDF. Rather, it is an
expression of a disagreement with the way DPKG handles configurations. I'm

mtd-tools hasn't been updated since 2005 and misses recent improvements,

This is normal.

You are running Testing, where mozilla-firefox is only a dummy
transitional package meant for upgrades from Sarge. Default deborphan
settings used by upgrade-system are intended to clean up such packages,
once they no longer are necessary, such as after upgrading to a newer
Debian release. In this case, the actual browser is nowadays in the
package firefox.

Ethereal also is a dummy package, this time to pull in wireshark, which is
the new name used in recent releases of the same software.

You can easily confirm that a package is transitional by using apt-cache
(apt-cache show packagename) to read its description. Dummy packages are
always described as such, at least in the long package description, and
often in the short package description too.

As for the libraries, upgrade-system removes them in layers, so it will
only show you those that appear immediately safe to remove for each pass,
hence why you see fewer of them than what wajig intends to remove.

Basically, I'm not sure where the bug is?

What you describe above is exactly how upgrade-system works: it removes
no longer necessary libraries and dummy transitional packages.

Or did I miss anything from your bug report that would constitute a bug?

Found it! Dependencies were indeed correctly upgraded for the transition,

Bug#384424: lintian: possible mishandling of similarily-named shlibs with dashes

Yes, indeed.

That's what the error seems to be: it looks as if the shlibs is being
parsed as meaning that anything following the first dash in the filename
should end up as the second field of the shlibs file.

That is generated by dh_makeshlibs from debhelper. Could this be where
this parsing bug is?

Valid point. I might indeed simply exclude them.

Bug#384731: screem: file monitoring idiocy

2006-08-26 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: screem
Version: 0.16.1-3.1
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Probably more interesting for upstream than for Debian per-se:

Whenever saving a file (using CTRL S), Screem brings out an alert box,
notifying the user that:

"file:///home/q-funk/public_html/styles.css has changed on disk
Reload instead of saving?"

Well, DUH! Screem just saved a new version, so of course the version
on disk has just been updated!

Perhaps the file monitoring loop could be momentarily hushed, whenever
saving a file, to avoid this sort of annoying non-sense?

Bug#391613: tsclient: ignores selected keyboard map and resets to US map over XDMCP

2006-10-07 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: tsclient
Version: 0.148-2
Severity: important

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

When selecting the XDMCP protocol, the keyboard map configured for X.org is
ignored so, when typing the login/password in the remote GDM, someone has the
unpleasant surprise to notice that the keyboard map has reverted to US.

Additionally, specifying which keyboard map to use in the Local Resources
dialog
before connecting has no effect either; the keymap reverts to US there too.

While this only affects connections over the XDMCP protocol, it essentially
makes
tsclient unusable with X11 servers, anywhere outside USA.

Bug#391613: tsclient: because Xnest needs a -xkbmap option to select the map

Package: tsclient
Version: 0.148-2
Followup-For: Bug #391613

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

According to ,
Xnest needs to have the keyboard map's name passed using the -xkbmap option.

Sure enough, looking at the process map confirms that tsclient doesn't:

 3501 ?S 0:01 \_ tsclient
 3823 ?D 0:00 \_ Xnest :1 -once -geometry 1024x768

The cure would apparently be to pass the 2-letter code of the keyboard map
selected
in the Local Resources using the above option. In this example, it should have
been:

That is perfectly inoffensive. The aspell dictionary is generated from the
myspell dictionary, which starts with a wordcount number. Aspell discards
it when it builds the hash, as you saw, but it is needlessly verbose about
it.

I suppose that we could build from the ispell dictionary instead. It would
at least make that warning disappear. However, I wonder if we might end up
with a much shorter aspell dictionary then, because ispell is not good
with compound words and thus tends to understand fewer words and spelling
variations than myspell and aspell do.

Bug#387320: xkb-data: [Finnish symbols] macron to dead_macron

Package: xkb-data
Version: 0.8-7
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-

The symbols for Finnish currently include a macron as AltGr+Shift+minus.
This key is useless for the intended purpose, which is to enable writing
accented vowels used in Baltic languages. Fixing it requires making it a
deadkey, which is what the enclosed patch does.

NOTE: this issue also exists in 0.8-7ubuntu2 (Edgy) where a similar but
not identical file is at /etc/X11/xkb/symbols/fi (in Etch 0.8-7 it's at
/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/fi instead). The enclosed patch is against
the 0.8-7 version in Etch.

Bug#387752: cups-pdf: support UTF-8

Good point.

However, I am not convinced that CUPS-PDF is to blame, since printing
UTF-8 text works fine from GNOME. Here, I regularly mix Cyrillic and
Latin characters, a combination that clearly requires UTF-8 support.

I suspect that how CUPS clients and Ghostscript select fonts affect the
absence or presence of certain characters, thus why I'm copying this to
the CUPS and Ghostscript maintainers for comment.

The CUPS-PDF author is already subscribed to this package's PTS and can
probably also contribute answers to this bug report.

Except that, unless I'm mistaken, using the C collation rules for
languages other than English languages is wrong.

This sounds like a potential upstream bug.

Could you file a detailed report on the GNOME bug tracker and then respond
to the Debian bug with the GNOME bug number, so that we can monitor what
the author does with it?

Thanks for that. I just added the forwarding tag. This means that whenever
upstream gets around fixing it, the Debian BTS will mark it accordingly
and notify us.

Kenshi Muto, the key maintainer of CUPS commented over IRC that:

"About the CJK issue: there are only a few text->PS converters that
support CJK correctly. Usually we Japanese use a2ps or a2ps-perl-ja with
the encoding option, before printing (it means that we don't trust any PPD
to correctly handle any CJK encoding)."

I wouldn't be surprised if it weren't compliant.

Anyhow, as we're starting to notice, bug 387752 has nothing to do with
cups-pdf per se, since we rely entirely on Ghostscript for producing the
Postscript document and on CUPS for printing it.

My gut feeling is that Ghostscript is beginning to show its age on two
counts: improper UTF handling and default fonts that don't cover a wide
enough segment of the Unicode namespace, resulting in missing glyphs.

I have CC'ed the Ghostscript maintainer here for comment on that assumption.

Bug#389684: deborphan: --find-removed option

2006-09-27 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: deborphan
Version: 1.7.18
Severity: wishlist

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

The following command reports packages that have been removed but not
purged:

dpkg -l | grep "rc "
rc apt-show-versi 0.08 lists available package versions with distri
rc console-tools 0.2.3dbs-56Linux console and font utilities
rc dhcp-client2.0pl5-19 DHCP Client
rc initramfs-tool 0.49bpo1 tools for generating an initramfs
ii sysv-rc2.86.ds1-1 Standard boot mechanism using symlinks in /e

Of course, a false positive always shows up (sysv-rc) but, othwerwise, those
are indeed packages that have been removed without a purge, presumably during
the course of installing packages with Conflicts relationships.

Thus, this wishlist is for a --find-removed option similar to --find-config
that could be used to locate packages whose binary is gone but who still have
some files left.

Hmm. It seems I forgot to actually mention it. Anyhow, NO, there is no

Once the /bin/sh is replaced with /bin/bash (function is a bashism), it
still gives me this:

nino:/root# dpkg -a --configure
Setting up sysv-rc-bootsplash (1.0.1-1) ...
Testing if patches apply cleanly...
4 out of 8 hunks FAILED -- saving rejects to file /etc/init.d/rc.rej
Patches would not apply cleanly.
dpkg: error processing sysv-rc-bootsplash (--configure):
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:
 sysv-rc-bootsplash

That's probably because sysv-rc 2.86.ds1-15 is what we have in Etch, but
the above package only works for 2.86.ds1-14.1.

Bug#382825: zd1211-source: possibility of requesting zd1211b module to module-assistant missing

2006-08-13 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: zd1211-source
Severity: important

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

It appears that most recent zd1211-based hardware actually uses the rev.B
chipset.
Unfortunately, this Debian package offers no possibility of requesting that the
zd1211b variant be built. This should be solved by parsing environment
variables,
but would first require disabling the default variable in the Makefile.
Alternately,
since a growing majority of hardware is rev.B, the Makefile in zd1211-source
could
be made fixed to build zd1211b, instead of zd1211, by default.

No, I did not. gaim-irchelper is compatible with anything over 1.2.0, as
pointed ot by upstream a few releases ago. Therefore, build-dep is
correct.

The main issue is that auto-builders in experimental assume dependencies
from unstable, unless otherwise coherced by artificially bumping up the
version number to force usage of experimental packages.

Looking at the patch, I can see why it fails to apply:
You are trying to replace usplash functions!

Unfortunately, Debian and Ubuntu both selected usplash as their default
bootsplash package, so better try cooperating than fighting it.

One suggestion from Petter Reinholdtsen (pere on IRC) is to put an
alernative to the usplash scripts that sysv-rc expects to find, i.e.
making bootsplash progress bar scripts emulate those from usplash. Then
sysv-rc doesn't need to be patched anymore, because we emulate usplash
scripts.

"for -xkbmap you need a compiled .xkm file"

I'm not sure how this should be done or whether this falls

Bug#393850: console-setup-mini: Unicode-only version still asks about legacy encodings

2006-10-17 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: console-setup-mini
Version: 1.8
Severity: normal

-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Seeing how the goal of this mini-version is to be UTF-8 only, debconf
questions related to the character map (UTF-8 or one of several legacy
encodings) is unnecessary. It should be skipped entirely. It is UTF-8.

Additionally, the question about codeset should be clarified. The way it
is currently phrased, one might think that selecting anything else than
Uni1, Uni2 or Uni3 will result in a legacy enconding being used. Isn't
the actual intent is to decide which subset of the Unicode range should
be available for display, to compensate for the framebuffer's limit on
the number of glyphs it can simultaneously utilize?

Bug#391759: gnome-media: FTBFS because of new libnautilus-burn-dev

2006-10-20 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Upon Loïc's instructions, I installed -dbg versions of libc6, glib2.0 and
libgstreamer0.10. As soon as I had done that, neither gdb or valgrind
could find any error left. Gnome-settings-daemon suddenly worked as
expected and so did building gnome-media. I'm completely puzzled as to
what happened.

To retrace my steps, I first installed libgst0.10-dbg, which did not help.
I then installed valgrind and libc6-dbg, and executed valgrind, which
reported that some Altivec instructions were halted. Everything scrolled
really fast. At the same time, members of team gnome suggested that
installing glib2.0-dbg would make sense, so I did. When I tried running
Valgrind again, it could not find any error or report any buffer overflow
either. Removing all -dbg libraries did not break anything either. I
successfully rebooted and logged back into gnome without error.

I'm a bit puzzled by your findings, considering that these values are
the same ones used by Hercules for their own custom Linux
distribution, as I have been able to verify by mounting the original
partition and copying their xorg.conf to an USB disk.

On another issue, please note that rounding Hz values is not a good
idea. Instead, the values given by the cvt tool should be used.

Shall I upload this to experiental in the interim or are you ready to

Bug#727236: upower: powers off when battery is low, even if AC is plugged-in

2013-10-23 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: upower
Version: 0.9.22-1
Severity: important

This laptop's battery is old and doesn't stay charged for long.
This should not matter, since I'm operating on AC power anyhow.
Despite this, every now and then, GNOME warns me that the laptop
will be shutdown because the battery has reached a critical low.

Given how gnome-power-manager depends on upower for its power
management data, I'd assume that upower is the culprit for this
decision to shutdown the system even while running on AC power.
If not, feel free to reassign this report to the proper package.

Karim,

Thanks for following up on this bug report.

It could be a good idea to reply directly to the bug report, rather
than e-mailing me and Jonathan separately. This way, more people can
participate in resolving this issue as a group effort.

Bug#656745: gnome-control-center: Region panel breaks LANG, breaks terminal charset, shows wrong languages

2013-10-28 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
I wouldn't consider this issue as fixed.

GNOME still shoves default languages onto the end-users, instead of
only showing languages for which libc locales were generated, or
whichever language was selected by the user via GDM upon logon.

2013-10-28 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Actually, that version cannot be tested as-is, because too many of the
dependencies are not yet available in Testing and too many of the
newer packages that satisfy those dependencies Breaks older versions.

Way back when people reported installation errors for CUPS-PDF, the
general concensus was that using the -E option to enable encryption
with 'lpadmin' was a source of problem, because the SSL certificates
needed by CUPS might not have been yet unpacked and configured on a
fresh install, so the option was removed from CUPS-PDF's maintainer
scripts.

Yet, according to the above, connections do require it. I'd really
appreciate more precise info for when it's required and when it's not.
Once I've received this, I can upgrade CUPS-PDF's maintainer scripts
to match.

Still, TBH, the error message itself is a textbook example of
obfuscated code that provides misleading feedback to the user. *sigh*

Kudos to Didier for taking the time to figure this one out for everyone else. :)

I'm really unsure of what to respond about the request for a cups.conf
that produces this issue since I personally never experienced it. You
might have better luck asking anyone who submitted a bug report
against CUPS-PDF on the precise topic of a failed install.

Anyhow, upstream's request is besides the point. The report you filed
upstream is about the error message being cryptic and misleading, from
a user's perspective. The fix is not about finding what causes the
error message (which would be useful, but is an entirely separate
issue), but rather to make the error message say something that the
end-user seeing it appear would understand and be able to act upon.

Cheers!

What would prevent Debian from enabling the right Configure option in
debian/rules to use 1.0 on testing/unstable uploads?

Bug#682935: #682935 - x86-32: segfault on startup

2014-05-06 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
The configuration options in 3.8.3-5 (testing) are completely
different from those in 3.4.x, so I'm unable to verify whether this is
fixed or not in newer releases.

However, the main point here is that g-c-c in stable is extremely
UNstable; it crashes on a wide variety of platforms, and not just when
changing mouse/touchpad settings.

Sure. Here's an AVI: http://q-funk.iki.fi/MVI_1734.AVI

Among other things, the filesystems seem to get mounted twice. Also,
some of the LSB scripts get repeated, sometimes twice, sometimes
thrice; I haven't noticed any consistant pattern about this one.

That's probably because upstream decided to no longer ship a separate
Javascript parser; building the suite with their parser has become
compulsory.

xulrunner-dev probably needs to Conflicts/Provides/Replaces libmozjs-dev

Bug#742036: iceweasel: H.264 support via Gstreamer still not working

2014-03-18 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: iceweasel

Now that 24 entered testing, I thought that I'd try native H.264
support via Gstreamer. While the GOOD plug-in still exists, the
FFMPEG one doesn't, so even after enabling the config option and
restarting Iceweasel, Vimeo still states that the content cannot
be played with my current setup. Suggestions?

Bug#717586: grub-pc: Where is the option to disable submenus documented?

2014-03-18 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: grub-pc
Version: 2.00-22
Followup-For: Bug #717586

This bug's closing message (from the Debian changelog) suggests
that the option to disable the submenu was documented. Where?

Also, generally speaking, enabling submenus by default is
counter-intuitive on grub-pc, given how GRUB scales itself
to match the maximum resolution offered by the BIOS, which
then easily allows fitting all kernels into the GRUB menu.

Bug#742037: gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg: 686 days old; stuck in Sid since forever

2014-03-18 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg

Severity: important

gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg has apparently been stuck in Sid for about 2 years.
While I notice an FTBFS against libav9, does this concern libav10 too or
is there any other reason for this lenghty situation?

A patch was previously attached that restores online authentication.

Can you please get around merging it and pushing the fix into unstable?

Bug#698355: iceweasel: 18.0-1 breaks OpenSC one-pin module support

2013-01-17 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: iceweasel
Version: 18.0-1
Severity: important

Since 18.0-1 authenticating to websites using the OpenSC one-pin module fails:
After asking for PIN1 as expected, Iceweasel reports that the PCKS#11 token
was unloaded in mid-transaction.

The above works as expected on 10.0.12esr-1 using the exact same dependencies
and, as far as I can remember, was also working until 17.0.1-2.

I already did. Simply downgrading all installed iceweasel packages to
whatever is in Testing is all it took to solve it. libnss* packages
remained at whatever is in Unstable.

Thanks for cloning the bug!

I'm not sure how useful it is to keep the original bug attached to the
package, though, as it's essentially reporting a resolved state,
rather than a new bug.

Noted. If you could point me to the number of the cloned bug, I'll
gladly continue the procedure there. :)

[ It might be useful for the BTS to automatically add the maintainer
of whichever package is concerned by an unblock request in the loop,
since it might have been filed by someone else. Right now, the
maintainer might not even be aware of such a request, since the BTS
only mails the maintainer of "package" release.debian.org ]

Right, this was pulled from our upstream Git, since it's needed to
apply later fixes. While it *is* a huge diff, it's essentially
harmless, since the pretty-printing was performed with an X release
macro.

Right and seeing what happened with python-apt, I'm starting to think
that debdiff's are best attached to the bug itself and merely
mentioned in the debian-release thread, so as to avoid clogging the
mailing list. :)

Thanks for your help!

Bug#692600: unblock: xserver-xorg-video-geode/2.11.13-7

2012-11-09 Thread Martin-Éric Racine
Package: release.debian.org
User: release.debian@packages.debian.org
Usertags: unblock
Severity: normal

Please unblock package xserver-xorg-video-geode:

The version in unstable fixes outstanding rendering bugs caused by
recent Cairo versions. Feedback had been requested from reporters of
existing bugs but remained unanswered and instead came now via brand new
bug #692569 as a confirmation that the issue is fixed in unstable.

The debdiff was e-mailed directly to the bug report, because it would
have been rejected by the Debian list server, due to a large diff
(0003-Whitespace-cleanup-using-.-modular-x-indent.sh.patch) that is a
prerequisite to applying recent changes necessary to fix the issue.
While this particular change is indeed intrusive, it was produced using
a standard X.org release macro so I would consider it as safe.

unblock xserver-xorg-video-geode/2.11.13-7

Martin-Éric

... which, even then, got rejected by the list with a warning that it
exceeded the maximum size allowed. It however correctly reached the
bug report itself.

I noticed that the1.99-23.1 that entered Testing today still has the
broken localisation. Can this please be fixed before Wheezy is
released? Thanks!

This phrasing also works. The key change that needs to be implemented
is Ladataa -> Ladataan i.e. adding the missing N.
