Bug#439295: linux-image-2.6.21-2-686: System fails to boot

bla duplicate report and overrating your own little problem.

Just because the problem is easily fixed doesn't mean it didn't cause my system
to fail to boot. And when a system doesn't boot, it's essentially broken.

So my actual problem is that I can't really recommend Debian to my friends and
acquaintances if I think a kernel upgrade will break their system. This little
problem of mine can, of course, be easily fixed by not recommending Debian.

this due to the new pata driver for sis,
just change your boot args to UUID and be happy.

Thanks, I'll check it out.

Yes, this is probably part of the libata transition. The right way to
do this is probably to use filesystem labels for bootup, rather than
hard conding device names. I don't think that can be done
automagically, so this may just have to be documented in release notes.

OK. Maybe these filesystem labels could also be used in the /etc/fstab entries?

That looks to me like it decided your drive was UDMA/100 and configured
for it correctly. What makes you say it didn't enable dma?

Well, that's just what hdparm seems to say:
# hdparm -d1 /dev/sda

/dev/sda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

Bug#439295: linux-image-2.6.21-2-686: System fails to boot

2007-08-23 Thread Vesa Savolainen
Package: linux-image-2.6.21-2-686
Version: 2.6.21-6
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

*** Please type your report below this line ***
After upgrading from linux-image-2.6.18-4-686 to linux-image-2.6.21-2-686, the
system
fails to boot because the kernel now suddenly sees hard drive as /dev/sda while
linux-image-2.6.18-4-686 saw the same hard drive as /dev/hda. After editing
/boot/grub/menu.lst and changing /dev/hda5 to /dev/sda5, (
title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.22-1-686
root(hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-1-686 root=/dev/sda5 ro vga=791
video=vesa:ywrap,mtrr
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-1-686
savedefault
) the system boots O.K with linux-image-2.6.21-2-686, but fails to enable dma
for /dev/sda.

So I installed linux-source-2.6.22 and compiled a new kernel with my own custom
configuration,
which saw the hard drive again as /dev/hda and enabled dma without problems.
Still, I'd
much prefer to use Debian's linux-image packages instead of custom compiled
kernels.

I also tried linux-image-2.6.22-1-686, which acts just like
linux-image-2.6.21-2-686.

2006-10-16 Thread Vesa Savolainen
If you upgrade to the kdebase in unstable, does the problem go away? (Be
sure to also use the kdelibs from unstable).

Yes, after upgrading to unstable, the problem seems to go away and kdesu
accepts my root password again.

Bug#393159: kdebase-bin: kdesu fails to accept a valid root password

2006-10-15 Thread Vesa Savolainen
Package: kdebase-bin
Version: 4:3.5.4-2+b1
Severity: important

kdesu gives me an error message claiming that the root password I gave it is
invalid. But I
know that I typed the valid root password. I tried several times with the same
result. I
think this must be a bug in kdesu.

Bug#352038: pcmciautils: fails to start PCMCIA netcard automatically

2006-02-09 Thread Vesa Savolainen
Subject: pcmciautils: fails to start PCMCIA netcard automatically
Package: pcmciautils
Version: 012-3
Severity: important

*** Please type your report below this line ***
After updating linux-image-2.6-686 from 2.6.12-10 to 2.6.15-4 in Debian testing
(plus I have some packages from
unstable), my PCMCIA netcard (eth0) is no longer started automatically at boot
time. I noticed the following message
in /var/log/boot:

Not starting pcmcia-cs since kernel version = 2.6.13 and udev is enabled

This is the only error relevant to my problem that I could find while browsing
the log files and dmesg. I'm not sure
if this actually is a problem in the pcmciautils package but apparently there's
something wrong with the way Debian
(udev, pcmciautils, whatever) currently manages my PCMCIA netcard. It used to
work fine before the kernel upgrade.

Here's the output for pccardctl ident:

Socket 0:
  no product info available
Socket 1:
  product info: D-Link, DE-660+, , 0004743118001
  function: 6 (network)

lsmod shows that the correct kernel module (pcnet_cs) has been loaded and
running ifup eth0 manually brings eth0
up but I'd prefer Debian to start my netcard automatically.
