Google says that different devices fail after different time or volume of
data. Reliable kernels seem to be 3.12.32, 3.17.4-3.17.6. Maybe 4.0.1 and
4.0.5. I'm going to test them all.
And yes, your thought about power seems to be correct because users with

However, for most cases etckeeper's metadata info is still enough to restore
all modes correctly. Files, which are not in the '.etckeeper' have had mode
either 644 or 755 originally. So, i just need to determine which one was
executable and which one was not. I can do this by looking at executable
duplicity_0.6.15-4_i386.deb depends on python2.7 which is not
available in Debian/Squeeze.

The problem seems to be somewhere in stat() system call. Exploring it
with gdb gives the following:
