Dear Maintainer,

When manpages with the same name exist in different packages would it be
possible to come up with some algorithm to get better defaults?

For interfaces(5) the first choice is ifupdown (maybe because it's
higher priority than ifupdown2?), but for grub-install(8) the first
choice is grub-legacy instead of grub2-common (they have the same
priority).

Maybe Replaces: grub-legacy in grub2-common could be a hint?

If there is a list somewhere with all duplicated manpages I can try to
look for (other) patterns.

Kind regards,
Andrei

Well, a more generic option would be "Wayland graphical session", though
it's a bit of a tautology :)

Would "Graphical session using the Wayland display protocol" be too
long?

This bug came up in a sub-thread on debian-user, also in relation to
DSA-5059:

https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2022/01/msg01166.html

Just in case it helps, anecdotally I can confirm that at least on
debian-user problems due to missing packages that are only Recommends:
have been both extremely rare in the past years and treated as an
unsupported configuration.

Hope this helps,

Bug#994761: manpages outdated compared to package

2021-09-20 Thread Andrei POPESCU

Hello,

The manpage resize2fs(8) shows versions:

bullseye 1.46.2-2

experimental 1.46.3-1

whereas:

$ rmadison e2fsprogs

(nothing for experimental)

Maybe there's some update needed following the release of bullseye?

Hello,

In the meantime it appears the project wide decision is to go for the
/usr merged via symlinks approach and the debootstrap default was
changed, so this report is relevant again.

Please at least provide the means for mmdebstrap users to create a
merged-via-symlinks /usr layout, even if you consider the default should
stay as it is.

As I understand it the APT maintainers are just saying it doesn't bring
much (if any) security or privacy benefit, they don't explicitly
recommend against it.

For the Release Notes itself there is however a real benefit in avoiding
all future bug reports asking to use https:// everywhere ;)

This package appears to be unknown to the BTS, possibly because stretch
is already out of security support.

I'm reassigning your report to the source package, so the Kernel
Maintainers will actually see it, but you should consider upgrading to
Debian 10 (buster), or at the very least the kernel.

Reassigning to the kernel, especially since it worked correctly in
previous Debian versions.

As far as I know typically we refer to backports as an 'archive',
especially since it is an add-on for stable, so s/distribution/archive/,
otherwise it looks good to me, for what it's worth.

known to the BTS anymore.

Bug#990225: mate-color-select man page has bad link (404 error)

Hi Richard,

The entire content of the man page comes from the upstream project, so
any upstream-specific issues (which this would be, but see below) would
need to be addressed there.

> I believe the link should be:
>
> https://github.com/mate-desktop/mate-terminal/issues

The link itself appears to be correct[1], but the rendering on
manpages.d.o should not include the trailing period, hence the 404.

Filing this as a bug against manpages.d.o.

[1] mate-color-select seems to be a common component used by various
software that needs a facility for color selection.

Hope this helps,
Andrei

Indeed, I seemed to remember this, but couldn't find it just by looking
at the table of contents, because it's under "Deprecated components for
bullseye".

Maybe we should have sub-headings for each component?

Bug#990086: apt-key is deprecated in bullseye, how to manage keys instead

As far as I understand it's as simple as dropping the keys in there.

When a key changes/expires/etc. replace it with the new one (if provided
by the respective repository).

Indeed the documentation on this is a bit scarce, probably worth a
mention in the Release Notes.

Dear APT maintainers,

The short version appears to be this note to the 'add' command from
apt-key(8):

Note: Instead of using this command a keyring should be placed
directly in the /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/ directory with a descriptive
name and either "gpg" or "asc" as file extension.

where .gpg files are of type created with 'gpg --export' and .asc with
'gpg --armor --export'.

Your confirmation (or even better, proposes wording) would be much
appreciated.

Kind regards,
Andrei

Apparently the BTS doesn't know about -debug, which means this bug is
currently assigned against an "inexistent" package. Reassigning to

Any particular reason to do this?

ITPs should always be assigned to 'wnpp' and closed on first upload with

Hello Philippe,

(not the maintainer, but maybe I can still assist)

The link to the .deb package was provided in Vincent's message, I'll
include it again here:

https://snapshot.debian.org/archive/debian/20210313T203823Z/pool/non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-iwlwifi_20210208-4_all.deb

This is a direct download link, your browser should offer to save the
file. Copy it to a USB stick and insert it during the installation.

In case the installer doesn't ask at all (because it already found a
firmware) it is possible to install it manually via the console, or just
use a regular image (without firmware included).

If you need any help with this feel free to contact one of Debian's
support channels:

https://www.debian.org/support

Hope this helps,
Andrei

An RFP means you are requesting someone to package it. The best you can
do is to make it as easy as possible for potential packagers to decide
whether it's worth looking into it.

Especially the information about the license and programming language is
very useful for this.

In this particular case it could make sense to Cc: the KDE Team as they
might be interested in picking it up themselves.

It worked for me with the daily from today (didn't check the one from
yesterday), both the text and GTK versions.

The GTK version now starts in a much lower (apparent) resolution, while
previously it was using the full native resolution of the display (a
Full HD TV).

Is this intended? Not that I mind, the lower resolution does help with
readability ;)

Some mailer along the way mangled the line breaks and the report ended
up against the package "wnppSeverity", which doesn't exist.

Also, the correct severity is "wishlist" (just a cosmetic detail).

The "RFP" is a tag meant to go in the subject / bug title instead of
"TAG" (which I forgot to fix, doing it with this message).

In addition to the above, especially since this is an RFP, the report
should contain more information about the package, like the upstream
URL, license, etc. (see the link I provided below). This makes it easier
for a potential contributor that is looking into packaging it.

Hope this explains,
Andrei

Bug#988013: mini.iso fails to load grub.cfg (UEFI)

2021-05-03 Thread Andrei POPESCU
Package: debian-cd
Severity: important
Tags: d-i

Hello,

The mini.iso (graphical version) boots to a grub prompt.

Loading grub.cfg with 'configfile (hd0)/boot/grub/grub.cfg' works and
afterwards the image works correctly.

I tried buster, bullseye rc1 and the daily image from 1.May.

The bullseye rc1 firmware netinst boots fine, so I'm guessing it's not
due to bugs in this particular UEFI implementation.

In case it matters, the motherboard is ASRock B550M Steel Legend,
firmware version 1.52, upgraded to 2.0.

Kind regards,
Andrei

Arguably that bug should be severity important.

Basically users end up with an unusable 'rescue' boot menu option if
they chose not to set a root password during install.

See #977358 for a thorough explanation and workarounds (one being
editing the kernel command line, which kind of defeats the purpose of
having the menu entry in the first place).

Bug#977358: release-notes: document how to make the rescue mode usable if no
root password is set (buster)

("rescue mode" should probably have been "rescue boot entry", to avoid
confusion with D-Is rescue mode)

Andrei

Hello,

Please note there is no systemd-udevd package.

The messages come from the kernel and upowerd so I'm tentatively
reassigning to upower, hopefully the Maintainer(s) will have a better
understanding of what's wrong / where this belongs.

Full quote below for their convenience.

A dist-upgrade is difficult enough, reducing complexity introduced by
non-Debian packages and/or repositories (of questionable quality) seems

This is explained in the bug report for who cares to investigate, in my
opinion it's not needed in the Release Notes.

I'll have to trust you on this (and make a mental note about it).

As you probably know, it's as simple as:

systemctl edit rescue.service

and add

[Service]
Environment=SYSTEMD_SULOGIN_FORCE=1

It seemed a little bit much to add this as well, but I'm fine either
way.

Ok, here is something, just to get the discussion started:

The `rescue` boot option is unusable without a root password.

If a password for the `root` account is not set the system will
still ask for the root password if booted with the `rescue` option,
effectively making the rescue mode unusable. In order to avoid this
it is possible to boot using the kernel parameter
`init=/sbin/sulogin --force`.

To configure pkg:systemd to always to do the equivalent of this on
selecting the `rescue` option add `SYSTEMD_SULOGIN_FORCE=1` to the
Environment of the rescue.service unit (see
file:/usr/share/doc/systemd/ENVIRONMENT.md.gz). The `rescue.service`
unit is started by pkg:systemd in case it detects `single` in the
kernel command line (see man:systemd).

It might be useful to do the same for the `emergency.service` unit
(or instead) which is started ''automatically'' in case of certain
errors (see man:systemd.special), or if `emergency` is added to the
kernel command line (e.g. in case the system can't be recovered by
using the `rescue` mode).

For background and a discussion on the security implications see
bts:802211.

The pseudo-markup should be obvious. I'll try to come up with a patch
later, unless Someone Else (TM) beats me to it ;)

Kind regards,
Andrei

To me systemd-journald.service(8) seems like a better introduction.

It's probably also worth mentioning that on Debian the journal is
readable by members of 'adm', in addition to the default
'systemd-journal' group.

As far as I know Fasttrack is (still) an unofficial service, and the BTS
doesn't have any knowledge of packages that exist only in there.

Even for Backports (that contains only packages known to the BTS) the
rule is to report bugs to Backports Maintainer instead of the BTS,
because the "regular" package could be maintained by someone else.

Hope this explains,

Hello,

This appears to be the case. A side effect of this is that unless dealt
with manually these bugs will just linger in the BTS.

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgreport.cgi?maint=

Please either close or reassign them to a package known to the BTS.
