Bug#662774: liblivemedia-dev: Why no shared lib?

2012-03-06 Thread Christophe Mutricy
Not that I am aware of. It's probably not provided, because upstream's
build system does not support it.

Excatly.

Upstream uses custom Makefile. You could edit the Makefile.tail files
and add support to build a shared library.

And take care of proper SONAME, ABI/API changes management

The problem would be more obvious with verbosity=2 or -vvv.

It appear libproxy thinks you have a (http) proxy at localhost:21790.

So you need to check your kde/gnome settings, env variable, .pac, ...

 To: pkg-multimedia-maintain...@lists.alioth.debian.org

 Hello,

You have recently updated libdvbpsi7 from 0.2.0-1 to 0.2.1-1 for debian sid
and this caused all programs using this library to stop work. For example -
no epg in vlc (recent version) and it's not possible to change dvb-t channel
from main vlc menu. Everything works again after downgrading libdvbpsi7 to
 0.2.0-1.

I think you should fix something, it seems new version is broken.

 Let's try again... I've reverted to 1.1.11-2+b2:

The last upgrade is certainly not the culprit. I strongly suspect
1.1.4-1 - 1.1.5-1
I don't know if there is a way to have the package force the symlink to
be created.

To fix, i suggest:
apt-get remove vlc; rm -rf /usr/share/doc/vlc; apt-get install vlc

Will have to think a bit on how to fix that automatically

Depending where the crash, you might fix it by forcing vlc to use the xv

Trying with libva-x11-1 of unstable (1.0.1-3) and the one of

Bug#592462: Solved: dump your old config files

Le Fri 20 Aug 10 à 20:37 -0400, Dave Witbrodt a écrit :
Then I noticed that vlc was still remembering the old recent files
playlist from stuff I had played on version 1.0.6. But if I had blown
away the config files, how was it remembering? So, maybe there are
 other config files, right?

 A quick

 find -name '*vlc*'

in $HOME found a directory called '.config/vlc'. Moving that out of the
way restored video. All the video formats I have files to test have
worked, so everything was actually just fine all along.

Scanning for tips about this in

 /usr/share/doc/vlc/{changelog,NEWS,README}*

revealed no direct statement that configs were incompatible between
versions 1.0* and 1.1*. What baffles me is: how could they be
incompatible, since they moved? Maybe vlc looks in both places now?
Does it get confused if it finds old configs and tries to use them?

The change actually happened between 0.9.x and 1.0.x . But config files
shouldn't create problem like that. Do you happen to still have the old
config file ? I'd be interrested by having it ( or a diff -u with the
new config file)

Can we please have something about this in the vlc man pages and/or
/usr/share/doc/vlc? I have a feeling a lot of Debian vlc users are
going to get burned by it.

I'll add a note in the debugging tip presented when you launch
reportbug.

Bruno,

Could you try to remove/move away ~/.config/vlc/

Bug#591287: vlc from experimental cannot be build with the curent unstable version (I even wonder how it can have been produced)

2010-08-20 Thread Christophe Mutricy
Hello,

Why are you highjacking a bug report about libmatroska for a bug on vlc ?!

To report a new bug use 'reportbug'

Also the subject field is not meant to contain the whole bug report.

- Message d'origine -
Normally its a critical bug when you cannot rebuild...

It isn't mandatory to be able to build experimental package on unstable. So
it's not a bug.
Pbuilder by example is able to pick the needed build-deps from experimental.
And for a simple dpkg-buildpackage it's your job to make sure the build-deps
are satisfied.

Attached patch forces libdir=${exec_prefix}/lib . It's not necessarly the best
fix but I don't know CMake enough.

retitle 588059 mozilla-plugin-vlc: doesn't support playlist

Yeah it's confused by your URL which is actually a playlist. It parses
the playlist correctly but doesn't select any item from the playlist.

So I have retitle the bug.

 Package: mozilla-plugin-vlc
 Version: 1.0.6-1

 mozilla-plugin-vlc uses the old, BROKEN, mozilla-mplayer (v. 3.5.5) plugin.
 The
Mozilla MPlayer plugin that works is the one used by the package gecko-
 mediaplayer (v. 0.9.9.2-1).

mozilla-vlc-plugin (and VLC in general) has nothing to do with mplayer
or its browser plugins. All they do at best is share some libraries like
libavcodec.

So you report doesn't really make any sense.

Maybe you could try to uninstall/desactivate mozilla-mplayer and/or
gecko-mediaplayer, start iceweasel form a terminal and access a website
with a video causing problem.

Then send us the URL and the messages VLC outputs in the terminal

Also for future reference, using a tool like reportbug to report bugs,
would ensure that usefull info about the package and its depedances are
sent automatically. Here the output of 'apt-cache show
mozilla-plugin-vlc' would be relevant.

Hello

- Message d'origine -
 Package: vlc
 Version: 1.1.0-1

Since version 1.1.0, VLC supports hardware-accelerated video decoding
through VA-API. The required library is already in Debian and should
fail gracefully if no hardware accelerator is available. Please consider
switching this feature on for the next upload.

It also depends on a libva-enabled libavcodec which is only in experimental. So
it will have to wait for after squeeze release or maybe after vlc 1.1.1 i'll do
a package in experimental

Ugh, sorry. I just realized that vlc depends on libavahi-client3 *via*
 vlc-nox.
 Still: is this dependency necessary?

This is needed for /usr/lib/vlc/services_discovery/libbonjour_plugin.so.

The next question is: should this module be in vlc-nox ? Should we use
soft depends ?

But that rejoins the point discuss in #566924. So I'm merging the 2 bugs

Bug#566924: vlc-nox: Please lower Depends: libavc1394-0, libraw1394-11

2010-02-05 Thread Christophe Mutricy
Le Tue 02 Feb 10 à 10:05 +0100, Reinhard Tartler a écrit :
The slightly good news is that due to the modular nature of vlc if you
remove libavc1394-0 and libraw1394-11 forcefully you won't break vlc

(you should keep libdvbpsi however . It's needed to play MPEG2 TS files)

Oh I thought that's exactly the situation where one could
differentiate dependencies, and have vlc-nox only Recommends:
libavc1394-0 and libraw1394-11 (because vlc can do without, and if
they're just recommendend I could uninstall them without fiddling with the
  package management);

This does only work if vlc was loading those libraries at runtime. If
that is/was indeed the case, then we could do somthing similar like in
 the xine-lib package ages ago.

If vlc is linked dynamically at those libs, then it would crash at
startup as ld-linux.so would fail to bootstrap the image.

 xtophe, can you clarify here?

VLC laods its modules at runtime so technically we could move all the
depends to recomends except libvlc, libvlccore, libc6, libpthread,
libdbus, libdl, libhal and libm

But you'll have a pretty useless vlc.

So in any case we are back to quantifying how important a module is.

Then for not important module we have the choice of:
 - Putting it in its own package (vlc-plugin-dv, vlc-plugin-bonjour)
 - Grouping some modules in one package (vlc-extra-access,
   vlc-extra-servicediscoveries)
 - Relaxing some depends to recommends

The third solution would bring some packaging fun . (Hmmm checking
dpkg-shlibdeps' manpage there is some option to manage that)
I'm also not sure if all the users would realise the Recomends are quite
important. But we could try to educate them in reportbug control files.

Bug#566924: vlc-nox: Please lower Depends: libavc1394-0, libraw1394-11

is it really necessary that vlc-nox *Depends:* on libavc1394-0 and

vlc can operate without these libraries? And yes, space is not always
cheap, think embedded devices or running off a USB stick or SD card...

Yes. That's a question I ask myself everytime i add a new module. Do i
put it in another vlc-plugin-foo package or do I add it in vlc-nox.

My rule of thumb is that if the pulled libraries is less than 1MB on
size i put it in vlc-nox.

This is obviously not perfect. Some distro like Fedora by example
package every single module in its own package and then prvide some meta
package.

There is pros and cons for both solution:

On one side flexibility for the power user

On the other less packaging overhead and sth more simple for the simple

The slightly good news is that due to the modular nature of vlc if you
remove libavc1394-0 and libraw1394-11 forcefully you won't break vlc

(you should keep libdvbpsi however . It's needed to play MPEG2 TS files)

Hello,

90% of the time when i run git-dch (-a -S) my next command is vi
debian/changelog to check what git-dch has just added, delete some
commit log (need to remember to use Git-Dch: Ignore) and tweak some
commit log when the way the git message is worded is not the best for
the package changelog.

It would be nice to have an option to open debian/changelog in $EDITOR

VLC is subject to a lot of input coming from the wild (aka the Internet)

Can you be more specific? When I try to remove libavutil50 from my
system I have 109 packages that needs to be removed (vlc, gnome-office,
xine, inkscape...), so I definitely can't remove it.

I have deleted the libavtutil.so.50* from lib. The bug what still there.

Removing stuff by hand from /usr/lib is very rarely a good idea.

Here you need to be more specific. As I said remove libavutil50 seems
quite challenging and what do you call official libav* packages? Isn't
 libavutil50 official?

The following steps should works:
unbreak a debian system:

 - remove all references to debian-multimedia.org from
   /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/*.list

 - apt-get install libavutil49 libavutil50-

or with aptitude instead of apt-get.

Note that it will remove the packages needing the special version of
FFMpeg on debian-multimedia.org.

By official I mean: packages coming from debian.org not from a
third-party repository.

http://packages.debian.org/libavutil50 will show you that there is no
libavutil50 package in Debiani.

For sound juicer I can understand because it might be using libavcodec

via a chain of several depedencies

So it looks like the depedencies resolver is not smart enough.

Maybe forcing the installion of the libav* libs could help.

But the iceape-dev package is going to be removed from the archive before

I'm just back from holidays so all the followings is just ideas and not

You might remember that roughtly 1 year ago, you tested the vlc plugin

Not sure if it's worth it.  We will release MPD 0.15.4 on the upcoming
weekend, which includes the revert commit.

But we got no assurance that Decklan (the maintaner) will have spare
time soon to package this new upstream version.

mpd on armel is blocking the faad2/libass/... transition that's why
getting mpd ro build is important

These are not packages from Debian !
Marillat's FFmpeg is often uncompatible with Debian's one. if you run
vlc -vvv --no-plugins-cache --list |grep avcodec you'll see what
symbol is actually missing.

Install the one from Debian, delete your plugins cache (~/.cache/vlc) and retry

2009-09-30 Thread Christophe Mutricy
2009/9/30 Mark Felder felder...@gmail.com:
Thank you for pointing this out. This clearly must be from
debian-multimedia's repo. I forgot I had a couple packages from there.
Sorry for directing this bug report to the wrong person.

At the same time vlc does come from debian-multimedia.org, so they
can't be responsible for it not working.

The culprit is the user installing packages from two different repos ;)

The nagging has been efficient and it is backported in 1.0.2
Could you recheck once vlc 1.0.2-1 reach your mirror

Maybe a pre-release 1.1 package in experimental would be useful?

IMO, it's tool early for experimental becasue it's not stable mainly
due to a lot of change in the video output core and modules.

A good compromise will be for me to fix the debian packages of
http://nightlies.videolan.org which are broken as i haven't look at
them in a long time

Hello,

I'd like to upload libass 0.9.7-2 to unstable.
