Bug#1043544: qemu kvm rtl8139 interface breaks with linux-image-5.10.0-24-amd64

2023-08-12 Thread Jamin Hoggard
Package: linux-image-amd64
Version: linux-image-5.10.0-24-amd64

Upon updating a server hosting qemu-system-x86_64 / kvm virtual
machines (VMs) from linux-image-5.10.0-23-amd64 to
linux-image-5.10.0-24-amd64 and rebooting, all VM OSes saw the rtl8139
network interface as unplugged (and the network link down). Trying to
change the interface state via the QEMU monitor command "set_link
off" then "set_link on" runs, but the VM OS still sees
the interface as unplugged. Rebooting the host OS or VMs had no
effect.

The rtl8139 interfaces for the VMs work fine booting using earlier
kernel versions.

Server info:
CPU: AMD EPYC 7282 16-Core Processor
microcode: microcode updated early to new patch_level=0x0830107a

The same problem was not observed on an Intel server using virtio
network interfaces with the same kernel update.

I suspect the problem may be caused by the patches for INCEPTION
because the EPYC 7282 processor is affected by that (and Zenbleed),
but that may be incorrect.

Bug#904717: rosegarden "Tie Notes at Barlines" has no effect on some imported MIDI

2018-07-27 Thread Jamin Hoggard
Package: rosegarden
Version: 1:16.06-1+b1

After opening or importing some midi files, if there are tracks with
notes that span barlines (e.g. a half-note on beat 4 of a 4/4 bar),
selecting the note(s) and executing the command:
Adjust -> Notes -> Tie Notes at Barlines
 has no effect.

It is expected that the note would be split into shorter, tied notes,
in accordance with the documentation (e.g. two tied quarter-notes in
the example above; see "Splitting very long notes" at
https://rosegardenmusic.com/wiki/doc:notation-en).

Interestingly, if the long note is deleted and a note of equal
duration is inserted in place of it, the inserted note can then be
split properly using "Tie Notes at Barlines".

Example MIDI files that exhibit this bug (look for red barlines,
indicating an improper number of beats in the bar):

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a0/Bass_sample.mid
http://scores.ccarh.org/corelli/op2/corelli-op2n01-1.mid (see tracks 5 and 6),
https://imslp.org/wiki/Special:ImagefromIndex/186184

This bug was not present in Rosegarden 14.02, but is present in
Rosegarden 15.10 in other distributions (as well as 16.06, of course
in Debian).

Sometimes it appears that "Fix Note Quantization" fixes the notation
(many red bar lines disappear), but it actually shortens the notes
spanning the barlines to do this, instead of adding ties across
barlines and preserving the correct note durations.

The change that caused this bug may be in the makeThisNoteViable
function of src/base/SegmentNotationHelper.cpp, where similar bugs
have been caused in the past.

Thanks for your attention in fixing this.

Bug#749451: libgtk-3-dev introduces dependency on C++ library

2014-05-27 Thread Jamin Hoggard
Thanks for the speedy reply (and all the work on the GTK packages).

I see what you described is correct: the Gtk3 binaries don't depend on
libstdc++; it is only the developer package which requires the
standard c++ library. Looking at the dependencies, I think the actual
problem for my situation is that this introduces a dependency on g++
(so I probably should have reported it thus instead).

As for a concrete situation, I run Debian on a (highly) portable, low
power netbook in addition to my desktop system (I reported from my
desktop, so that is where the uname is from, sorry). There is no big
problem on my desktop with adding g++, etc. but my netbook is quite
resource constrained (i.e. I think I have more storage on my Raspberry
Pi). I don't use C++, just straight C, so I have had no need to
install C++ until I looked at installing gtk-3-dev to get some sweet
GUI. I don't think my system is so constrained I couldn't install
g++, but it is constrained enough that I'd rather not if I don't
really need it.

I generally think that the Debian policy of avoiding embedded
libraries is wise. It is a good idea not to have who knows how many
copies of a library floating around / bloating a system, and PCRE,
although small, seems to be the kind of library that could have some
serious security implications. That said, your proposed solution of
splitting libpcre3-dev into C and C++ parts sounds like a better
solution to me.

Thanks,
Jamin

Bug#749451: libgtk-3-dev introduces dependency on C++ library

2014-05-26 Thread Jamin Hoggard
Package: libgtk-3-dev
Version: 3.4.2-7

Summary: libgtk-3-dev introduces dependency on C++ (as opposed to just
C) library.

Details:
libgtk-3-dev depends on libglib2.0-dev, which depends on libpcre3-dev.
However, libpcre3-dev depends on libpcrecpp0, which introduces
dependencies on C++ libraries (libstdc++).

Possible solution:
According to the documentation at
 https://developer.gnome.org/glib/stable/glib-building.html
GLib can, and is indeed recommended to, be compiled using GLib's
internal version of PCRE (i.e. using the configure script option
--with-pcre=internal).
Note that the internal version of PCRE does not require C++ (see
https://git.gnome.org/browse/glib/tree/glib/pcre).

Bug#729825: wdm: lacks integration with consolekit

2013-11-17 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Package: wdm
Version: 1.28-16

It appears that wdm lacks integration with consolekit, this in turn means that
user sessions launched via wdm a prevented from interacting with things such as

and resume.

I've attempted some of the work arounds listed in #597937. However that's only
gotten me as far as a local session, not an active session.

Well-spotted. Should a fix only run /usr/bin/editor if $EDITOR is an
empty string? Is that all, or is there some other envvar I should look
for?

I'm not entirely sure, but I believe you might want to check for both
EDITOR and VISUAL, as the later is used to indicate a preferred GUI
editor. However, you may need to add additional detection to see if the
user is in a graphical environment to determine whether to use VISUAL or
EDITOR. I believe supporting EDITOR as a minimum should suffice for
most use cases.

Yes. Are you aware of anything in the base system that abstracts over
this in any useful way? Trying various different methods is going to
get nasty very quickly, especially since you generally have to actually
try authenticating before you find out you can't ...

I can't say that I'm aware of any such abstraction.

I wonder whether this really needs some kind of support in reportbug to
fix properly.

Sounds like the right place for any abstraction that would be generally
needed by various packages.

Bug#628654: potential solution

2013-11-13 Thread Jamin W. Collins
I noticed that this bug is marked as being blocked by #695140, and that
#695140 is marked as wontfix. I don't believe that #695140 is needed to
solve this bug.

If the /etc/X11/Xsession.d/98xbindkeys script is moved to another
location, and then a desktop file dropped in /etc/xdg/autostart/, I
believe the startup order will be corrected.

I've moved the /etc/X11/Xsession.d/98xbindkeys to
/usr/bin/xbindkeys_autostart, made it executable, and use the attached
desktop file (placed in /etc/xdg/autostart/).

This provides the same override logic as before, but starts xbindkeys
after the user's environment has been properly setup. Thus, any
terminals launched from xbindkeys have the proper references to agents
(like SSH).

Bug#729401: debian-installer: xfsprogs not installed when using xfs filesystems

I used the following installation media:

6fba6fbf3ecfe38ec7f667f5da658df2 debian-live-7.2-amd64-xfce-desktop.iso

If XFS volumes are used during the installation the xfsprogs package is not
installed on the target system.

This presents a problem as a filesystem check is forced on the first boot, but
the necessary binary is not installed. This renders the installed system
unusable.

Bug#729403: xfce4-panel: Action Buttons: logout action saves session regardless of settings

2013-11-12 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Package: xfce4-panel
Version: 4.10.1-1
Severity: normal

Using the logout option from the panel Action Buttons results in the current
session state being saved, regardless of the user's configured preferences.
This is highly non-intuitive and different from the logout option on the
applications menu.

Bug#729411: grub-pc: attempts to install to mmcblk0 rather than sda

2013-11-12 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.99-27+deb7u2
Severity: important
Tags: d-i

Using the following installation media:
6fba6fbf3ecfe38ec7f667f5da658df2 debian-live-7.2-amd64-xfce-desktop.iso

The installation continued largely without problems until it got to the
install grub on mbr stage. At this point it failed. After digging a little,
I noticed that it was trying to install grub on mmcblk0 (the SD card) rather
than on sda (the internal SSD). After selecting cancel, I was able to manually
specify /dev/sda as the target and the installation completed.

Bug#729414: grub-pc: bug report script assumes su doesn't support sudo

The bug report script /usr/share/bug/grub-pc/script assumes that the route to

the current installer offers a direct means of locking the root account and
enabling sudo for the first configured user.

The bug report script /usr/share/bug/grub-pc/script prompts the user on the

reportbug. Thus, if the user is using the GTK interface all they see is that
additional information is being collected, not that they are being prompted for
action on the terminal/console.

Bug#706877: insserv: breaks dist-upgrade by installing before packages fix their init scripts

I don't have specific suggestions on how to fix it for everyone, but
this has resulted in rather extreme breakage on each of the Debian
systems that I've dist-upgraded. Which given my previous experience
with Debian came as quite a shock. For less experienced users this
would be an extremely poor user experience.

Perhaps listing a conflict with package versions prior to those that
have the fixed init scripts would be enough. However, this would need
to be tested. I don't have details on hand for which specific versions
of packages had init scripts that caused the issue, I'm sorry.

Would it be possible to have innserv only warn and not break the
upgrade? By this I mean allow the rest of the upgrade to proceed. I
believe doing so would result in the fixed packages getting installed
and thereby also mitigating the issue.

I suspect it would have to be solved on a case by case basis, as we
are talking about packages with bogus or incomplete boot script
ordering information.

It may be bogus or incomplete boot script ordering information, but it
previously worked, keep that in mind. One does not expect a Debian
dist-upgrade from one stable release to another to result in a
non-functional system.

I doubt it, given that the incorrect boot ordering information exist
in the package in question, and continuing might leave the system in a
non-bootable state anyway. So the options seem to be to abort the
upgrade and require manual intervention, or continue the upgrade and
perhaps end up with a non-bootable system. The former seem like a
better option to me, to avoid silent breakage.
The former effectively left me locked out of my systems. I had to
reboot every one of them to a single user root session to fix them as my
user existed only in LDAP and then unrelated init scripts caused the
upgrade to abort in such a way that my user could no longer be validated
for sudo. Had the upgrade proceeded, the system would have been in
complete working order (AFAICT).

indeterminate state. In my case, it resulted in being unable to use sudo
from my account and having to completely reboot the box and use init=/bin/bash
to recover.

This bug has been reported in various forms repeatedly, with insufficient
severity each time.
Examples of this type of breakage: #651037, #589238, #695751

Several packages have updated init scripts that will resolve the aparent
dependency loops, such as: munin-node. However, insserv is installed before
them during the dist-upgrade and fails installation due to the existing loops
in the init scripts.

Examples of this are: fetchmail and munin-node. The munin-node init script
bug report is #680223. However, the updated package wasn't installed until
after insserv. While I haven't found a bug report for the fetchmail issue,
I did notice an updated init script being installed by it.

2010-02-15 Thread Jamin W. Collins
The problem with the newer kernels is that, as far as I know, they no
longer support passing PCI devices through to the domU instances. The
referenced kernel was the last found to work. So, while the reported
problem what that kernel can't be replicated with the newer kernels.
The newer kernels are not able to pass PCI devices through to the domU
instances.

There was a thread on mentors[0] where there were initially a few
dissenting opinions, but the thread ended with four DD's on that thread
and a reference to a fifth DD on a different thread asserting that
packages should not remove users on purge.

I'll look into this, but my initial feeling is that a purge of the
package should remove anything it's done and leave the system as if it
never was. As such I'm not initially inclined to change this behavior.

While it is a security hole, mediamate only uses Snoopy for user
provided URLs for IMDB entries. AFAIK, IMDB does not provide an HTTPS
interface which this vulnerability requires.

The extracted patch for Snoopy.class.php can be found here[1]. However
it would be much appreciated (and it is a release goal anyway), if
you could just depend on libphp-snoopy, instead of duplicating the code.
(Maybe you need to change some includes, I didn't check that).
That would make life much easier for the security team.

I'm currently working on a corrected packae.

Also, since the package is in stable (etch), I'd like to know in which way
the php library is invoked and how vulnerable to attacks the stable
version is. If it is severe enough, we should prepare a DSA, otherwise
an update could go through s-p-u.

See above. I don't see how this could normally be exploited in
mediamate's case, s-p-u should be fine. I'll look into providing a
corrected package for it as well.

Bug#329680: Status of jabber package?

2008-08-07 Thread Jamin W. Collins

Stefan Ott wrote:

I'm curious: you say the jabber package was orphaned from under me
but you are still the official maintainer - what's happening there?

I would have to look back through the bug reports, but there was a
report not too terribly long ago that was asking for an update. I
responded that there was some discussion between myself and the various
other Jabber related package maintainers about how to proceed.
Immediately following my response, the initial reporter put the Jabber
packages up for adoption.

In case you want/need a helping hand with the package, let me know.
I'm not a dd but I do some packaging.

If you *want* to orphan the package, I'm sure we'll find people to adopt it.

If you *don't* want to orphan the package, even better! :)

Ideally, I don't want to orphan the packages, but they do need quite a
bit of work. All of the existing transports that I'm the maintainer of
need to be removed from the distribution, they have all been replaced by
alternative versions. The problem there is leaving the users of the
transports without some means of migrating to the newer transport versions.

However, I need to be honest with myself and Debian. Due to both
personal items (my wife's death in April) and project issues, I really
don't have much motivation to work on Debian related items at this time,
nor am I likely to in the near(ish) future.

Add to this that I'll likely have more day-job related work to do in the
near future and it really doesn't appear that I can honestly say I'll
have time to work on the packages. So, I have not fought the previous
package orphaning, though I do find it rather rude.

I would be more than happy to try co-maintaining the package with you.
But honestly don't know how much time I can muster toward it.
Initially, I fear that my contribution would be little more than
sponsorship and review of your packaging/changes. If this is acceptable
to you, I'd be willing to give it a shot.

Other than that, are there any particular reasons left for not
shipping 1.6.x with lenny+1?

Primarily time and motivation.

I see no reason to argue against the removal. In fact at this point,
all the C based transports should probably be removed from the archive
in favor of the newer (and upstream active) Python based transports. I
simply have not had the time to work on migrating the existing packages

Bug#471408: ITO: intent to orphan

2008-03-18 Thread Jamin W. Collins

Peter Eisentraut wrote:

Package: jabber
Version: 1.4.3-3.3
Severity: important

Obviously, this package is not being maintained anymore, so unless
someone objects, I'm going to orphan this package in about a week's time.

This version is severely outdated and suffering from a number of
problems. The most prominent of which is licensing, which led to a
period of no updates. I don't feel that Debian can reliably meet the
requirements of the JOSL license which this was received under. While
some of the code does indicate it can be relicensed under the GPL this
proved problematic in practice and led to some parts being completely
rewritten in order to actual effect the relicense.

By the time the relicense actually took place I found myself with little
time and desire to work on packaging the new version for Debian. There
have been recent discussions regarding the formation of a Jabber Team in
order to provide a more consistent packaged solution across the various
servers and transports.

If you feel you must orphan this package, go ahead. However, I highly
suggest that no updates to this package be done (due to licensing) and
instead that the newer fully GPL'd version be used.

documented anywhere? Better yet, are they adjustable?

I routinely create a separate partition for my logs (/var/log), this is

As far as I can tell, the current state is an all or nothing switch to

The display of volume icons is useful for removable media (such as those
items mounted via pmount), but not so useful for more permanently

rss number change purely due to the kernel's memory manager fiddling
with pages and not necessarily that the amount of memory consumed is
going up. You only ran the test for 10 hours, you should try running
it for several days to see if more of a trend appears.

Attached you will find a two day run (limited by a several hour power
outage) for firefox with nothing displayed during the time (Homepage:
about:blank) and the browser never used. Overall memory usage continues
to grow.

I plan to do similar tests with the browser actually displaying a page
over several days.

Bug#465463: cyclic build dependencies on AMD64

2008-02-12 Thread Jamin W. Collins

Package: gcc-defaults
Severity: normal

I've been attempting to rebuild some packages from sid on AMD64 and
noticed what appears to be a cyclic build dependency between gcc-4.2 and
gcc-defaults.

The gcc-4.2 source lists the following build dependency:

   gcc-multilib [amd64 i386 powerpc ppc64 s390 sparc kfreebsd-amd64]

While, gcc-defaults (the source package for gcc-multilib) lists:

   gcc-4.2-base (= 4.2.2-3)

which is provided by the gcc-4.2 package.

Am I missing something?

Bug#460424: fails to start without freepats

2008-01-12 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Package: timidity
Version: 2.13.2-9
Severity: normal

timidity will not start in a default configuration without freepats
installed as the default timidity configuration attempts to read the
freepats configuration:

# By default, try to use the instrument patches from freepats:

source /etc/timidity/freepats.cfg

The package does list freepats as a Recommends however this doesn't seem
in line with policy. Policy states that any additional packages needed
for the package to run should be listed as Depends not Recommends.

Bug#460424: fails to start without freepats

2008-01-12 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Joost Yervante Damad wrote:
However it is very well possible to use timidity with other soundfonts then
freepats (and usually far better sounding ones!), and then timidity works
 fine.

It's not so much a question of whether it is possible to use it without
freepats, it's a question of the provided default configuration. As the
package is currently provided it will not even start. While removing
the configuration entry will allow timidity to start, it appears that it
does not have any instrument sounds or at least my attempts without it
failed to produce any sound.

It's a thin line; the reason it is like it is now is to avoid that people
 need
to install a 28M package (freepats) which they might not need, just to use
 timidity.

I can understand this concern, but current the provided installation
will likely be broken for many (if not most) users due to the default
configuration file and the lack of instruments. I simply installed
freepats when I noticed it was the reason timidity was failing.
However, I do think the package as provided should either work or notify
the user of what needs to be done to make it work.

Bug#459916: unable to sort elements of a qualified name

2008-01-09 Thread Jamin W. Collins

Package: kxmleditor
Version: 1.1.4-3.1
Severity: normal

It does not appear to be possible to sort the elements of a qualified
name object. For files such as Polycom SIP phone configurations this
can become quite a problem. Some of their phone configurations have
upwards of 100 elements under a single qualified name (ie reg). Several
of these elements are inter-related and need to be changed together. As
it is these elements are displayed in a seemingly random order instead
of alphabetically. So you wind up with a listing something like this:

reg.6.acd-login-logout=0
reg.6.server.1.retryTimeOut=
reg.4.server.1.retryMaxCount=
reg.3.server.1.expires.lineSeize=
reg.2.auth.password=
reg.5.ringType=2
reg.5.server.1.expires.lineSeize=
reg.5.server.1.retryTimeOut=

Inside of a much more usable listing like this:

reg.1.acd-agent-available=0
reg.1.acd-login-logout=0
reg.1.address=1410
reg.1.auth.password=
reg.1.auth.userId=
reg.1.callsPerLineKey=
reg.1.displayName=Jamin Collins
reg.1.label=1410
reg.1.lineKeys=
reg.1.ringType=2
reg.1.server.1.address=
reg.1.server.1.expires=
reg.1.server.1.expires.lineSeize=
reg.1.server.1.port=
reg.1.server.1.register=
reg.1.server.1.retryMaxCount=
reg.1.server.1.retryTimeOut=
reg.1.server.1.transport=DNSnaptr
reg.1.server.2.transport=DNSnaptr
reg.1.thirdPartyName=
reg.1.type=

Each of the lines on the phone have all of the above entries (6 line in
the case of this phone).

Bug#452706: memory growth even without any usage, extensions, or bookmarks

2007-11-26 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Package: iceweasel
Version: 2.0.0.6+2.0.0.8-0etch1

Even without any actual usage, active extensions, or bookmarks the
iceweasel program continues to increase the amount of memory it uses.
The increase is gradual, but there none the less. Iceweasel was simply
started and left idle during the test, no page displayed of any kind.

I'm attaching both the script that was used to monitor the process and
the resultant output.

Bug#451536: upgrade fails if using private SSL cert and pem

2007-11-16 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Package: slapd
Version: 2.3.30-5
Severity: normal

Upgraded my OpenLDAP server this morning and slapd failed to start. The
initial failure was in the middle of a general dist-upgrade from sarge
to etch. As such the notices about the failure scrolled off the screen.

So, to find the reason for the failure I ran apt-get -f install. This
of course failed due to the backup already existing, as others have
noted. Moving the latest backup out of the way allowed the previous
upgrade failure message and notes to be displayed.

Running slapd -u openldap -g openldap -d 16383 revealed the cause of
the failure.

While the database ownership had been updated to the new user:group, the
configuration files (/etc/ldap) had not. Specifically, the SSL
certificate and key used for SSL connections could not be read.

Changing the ownership on the key and certificate to openldap:openldap
and once again moving the backup out of the way corrected the problem.

Using LVM (and possibly in other ways) it is possible to resize a
partition without taking the entire system down. Munin's df plugin
doesn't appear to notice the change in partition size until you restart it.

Yes, initial tests were done without SSL to ensure that the

Bug#448859: migration of old spoolfiles broken

2007-11-01 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Package: pymsnt
Version: 0.11.2-1
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

The python MSN transport is, from what I've read, supposed to be capable
of migrating an existing spool directory from the older C version of the
transport. However, in testing the package this never happens.
Investigation of the code revealed that existing package (and upstream's
current source) appear to have one key condition incorrectly checked.
The attached patch corrects this and allows for migration of older spool
directories.

Bug#448859: corrected patch

The previous patch would indeed result in migration of the spool
directory however it would attempt the migration on every transport
startup. I've corrected the patch and it now only runs when the control
file notes_to_myself does not exist.

Bug#420081: S2S and SSL work fine.

2007-10-30 Thread Jamin W. Collins
severity 420081 normal
tags 420081 = moreinfo unreproducible
thanks

I've just tested this on a bare Debian 4.0 installation. Installed only
jabber-1.4.3-3.3, created a self signed SSL certificate, and made the
minimal changes necessary to configure the server to use the certificate
and communicate with other servers.

I then added my normal jabber account to the contact list of my new user
on the test system. Both accounts are connected to their respective
servers via SSL and I'm able to pass messages back and forth between them.

Based on the above findings, I'm downgrading the severity of this
report. I suspect the problem that's being experienced by some is with
some other component.

For those experiencing this problem, are you also running any
transports? If so, which one(s)? Can you try disabling all transports
and test just the core jabber server using the 1.4.3-3.3 package?

I don't see the problem with running jabber in the adm group. As for
the proposal of having logrotate change the group, that will only be
useful on logs that have been rotated.

Unless someone can provide a real security concern/problem this creates
I don't plan on changing it.

The bug is not reproducible at will and neither the nv or vesa drivers
provide the necessary hardware video acceleration needed for daily use
on the system. The system may operate fine for days or weeks at a time
without exhibiting the problem. It is simply not feasible to operate
without the hardware acceleration for an indefinite time frame hoping
for the problem to occur. If there were some logging and/or tracing
that could be put in place to capture information when this happened or
that could be gathered by remotely connecting to the machine when this
occurs, I'd be happy to gather it. But switching to either the nv or
vesa drivers would effectively cripple the system and make it unsuitable
 for its daily use.

Version: 1:7.1.0-19
Severity: normal

Not entirely sure where to report this or how to go about starting to
troubleshoot or track this problem down, but periodically my X session
will become almost completely unresponsive. The applications will
continue to update their windows/display. And if the mouse is still
visible, it can be moved around the screen. However, clicking on
anything with the mouse fails to elicit the normal response (focusing a
window, opening a menu, launching an application, etc).

If the last focused window allowed text entry the keyboard will continue
to enter into it. However, any attempt to change windows (via
keybinds), kill the X session (CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE), or switch to a VT
(CTRL+ALT+[1=6]) all produce no response.

Suggestions on where to beginning tracking this down or possible
reassignment of this bug to a more appropriate package would be most
appreciated.

Please find enclosed a patch fixing compilation of jabber-jit with GCC
4.2. If desired I can prepare a NMU with this fix in it.

Please feel free to do so. Situations in my personal life don't allow
much time for Debian for the foreseeable future.

Hi Jamin,

I'd like to know whether some upload is planned soon, since this issue
is quite easy to solve and risk-free. If you don't have time to spend on
this right now, you could just allow us (GNU/kFreeBSD porters) to do a
porter NMU, with this very only change.

Thanks in advance.

Bug#408678: mysql-query-browser: segfault on table creation attempt

2007-01-27 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Package: mysql-query-browser
Version: 1.2.5beta-2
Severity: important

Attempting to create a new table on a remote MySQL database results in
an immediate segfault of the application. This happens every time I
attempt to create a table on the server.

However, using mysql-query-browser from stable works fine.

The follow is a backtrace from the segfault:

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.

Bug#407166: jabber uses nonstandard places for init-related configuration

jabber.cfg predates common use of /etc/default as I recall.

Also, the init.d script sources a file in /etc/jabber, provided by
jabber-common, which is only a pid checker, and I think should be
 using /lib/lsb/init-functions.

Again, I believe the script provided by jabber-common again predates the
availability of (or at least my knowledge of) the lsb/init-functions.

I'll look into updating both of these for the next upload of Jabberd14.

Bug#329680: GnuTLS support for jabberd14

Matthias Wimmer wrote:

 BTW: Snapshot is available at
 http://download.jabberd.org/jabberd14/snapshots/jabberd14-1.6.0+20070114.tar.gz

I've looked through the snapshot. From what I can tell, the source
files are still explicitly licensed primarily under the JOSL license
with the option of relicensing them under the GPL. While the source
files do have the option of licensing them under the GPL, doing so
requires explicit modification of each file to remove the JOSL statement
and add the GPL statement. I had hope this change would be done
upstream as part of the relicensing effort. However, this is a lesser
concern than the other items listed below.

Some of the source files are either missing licensing statements or are
licensed under licenses incompatible with the GPL:

jabberd/lib/jabberdlib.h
- appears to be missing any form of licensing declaration

jabberd/lib/sha.c
- appears to only be licensed under the MPL v1.1. As far as I know the
MPL is not compatible with the GPL[1].

jabberd/lib/snprintf.c
- as you previously indicated is licensed under the GPL incompatible
Apache license. While Paul van Tilburg has indicated that this file is
not used on GNU/Linux that does not appear to be the case, as removing
it results in build failure.

OpenSSL support will be removed once GnuTLS has all functionallity. (I

I did notice that several of the files included linking exceptions for

I wouldn't like to install a package requiring me to install the libmysql*

I don't know what azareus's UI for this is like but depending on the
situation it might be best to make a configuration option, set by
default, which suppresses it. For example, if the current
code presents dialogues nagging to be allowed to update from upstream,
then we should definitely disable that by default. OTOH if it's an
obscure menu option then just adding `(not recommended!)' in an
 appropriate string might be sufficient.

I just tested an absolutely default install of Azureus from the current
package in testing (2.5.0.0+0-1). Without changing any configuration
settings from the prompted defaults, I'm presented with a dialog to
download a newer version of both the Core Azureus Version and
azupdater/Azureus Update Support automatically. There is no
indication that doing so will deviate from the provided Debian
packaging. Nor, did I as a user select to have the application go out
and check for updates.

Allowing the application to download the update resulted in no
indication that it would be updating in my home directory instead of the
system-wide location.

After relaunching for the update the following error (not present prior
to the update appeared):

Error
SWT library loaded from /usr/share/java can't be automatically updated
from version 3235 to 3318 (must be loaded from
/home/jcollins/.azureus). Please see the wiki for details.

So, no only does the application default to checking for and suggesting
updates, allowing it to do so appears to result in some form of
dependency problem with the SWT library.

Bug#329680: Another upstream release

2007-01-13 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Paul van Tilburg wrote:

Now that jabber14 1.6.0 is out[1], I would really like to have this
in Debian. This upstream release boosts this server to complete XMPP
compliance and deals with many past issues.

I don't know that such a major change would be able to make it into etch
at this point, but I will certainly look to packaging it for etch+1.

I have talked with upstream about the licensing. Currently, the only
non-GPL licensed file is snprintf.c, which is not used on the
GNU/Linux platform. It is there to be able to support more Unices.
This means that a DFSG clean tarball can be constructed and used to
distribute 1.6.0 under the terms of the GPL.

This is true only if OpenSSL is removed from the resultant package as
far as I know. Additionally, as you indicate a DFSG clean tarball would
need to be constructed, removing snprintf.c (this is trivial). However,
loss of SSL support upon upgrade is a larger concern for me. Upgrading
users from a version of the jabber package that supports SSL to a
version that doesn't isn't a good idea in my opinion.

I see that in over almost two years there has been no activity
surrounding this package (except for some work by Andi).

Most of the potential updates to the package have been postponed waiting
the licensing outcome as I didn't feel I could meet the requirements of
JOSL license.

An updated package for 1.6.0 could indeed be made, but I fear that such
a package will likely be seen as a regression or loss of features by
most users as I'll have to remove the SSL support due to potential
licensing conflicts (OpenSSL and GPL linking without a waiver). For more
information on this, please read Matthias Wimmer's update to this bug.

If you do not have the time to maintain it or are no longer
interested, I would like to request to adopt this package from you. I
talk with upstream frequently and also use and administrate the
 server intensively.

Contributions to the package and/or co-maintainers are certainly welcome.

Bug#405964: phpldapadmin: vcard export broken

2007-01-07 Thread Jamin Collins
Package: phpldapadmin
Version: 0.9.8.3-7
Severity: normal

phpldapadmin supports several export formats (LDIF, DSML V.1, VCARD 2.1,
and CSV (Spreadsheet)). This export can before the the base dn, one
level, or an entire subtree.

An export of an entire tree under LDIF, DSML, or CSV shows all objects
within the tree. However with VCARD only a card for the last entry of a
multi entry tree is created. Additionally, the information on the
created card is incorrect.

The only card created for a subtree vcard export (note the presence of
UID, the entry doesn't have one in LDAP):
BEGIN:VCARD
FN:Telasip Support
EMAIL;Internet:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
UID:11
VERSION:2.1
ADR:;;
END:VCARD

The same entry as an ldif export (note the lack of UID):
dn: cn=Telasip Support,ou=AddressBook,dc=asgardsrealm,dc=net
objectClass: top
objectClass: person
objectClass: organizationalPerson
objectClass: inetOrgPerson
givenName: Telasip
sn: Support
cn: Telasip Support
mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

And the same entry as a csv export (again note the lack of UID):
dn,ou,objectClass,givenName,sn,cn,mail,displayName,telephoneNumber,facsimileTelephoneNumber,mobile,postalAddress
cn=Telasip Support,ou=AddressBook,dc=asgardsrealm,dc=net,,top |

Bug#405342: libwrap0: hosts.deny becomes useless

Janusz Krzysztofik wrote:
I believe my patch is safe because for the old behaviour (process name) it
only removes error provoking condition on request-server-:sim being set,
introduced by port numbrer patch, and does not change anything else. This
condition is only applicable in case of port number, I think.

On the other hand, I can not imagine a real-life example when
request-server-sin is not set. I think this can only happen using
tcpdmatch, so maybe correcting this utility to set request-server-sin
instead of (or in addition to) patching the library would be more
appropriate.

I can give you a real world example, after all that's how I found it. I
only use hosts.allow and hosts.deny to set the two rules I indicated in
the initial bug report. That is allowing ssh connections from any
location and denying everything else except those connections from
localhost. Support for libwrap was recently added to vino. With the
existing libwrap0 package in testing/unstable connections to vino are
allowed from any location (not just connections from localhost). You
may ask why this is useful. Requiring that the connections come from
localhost is a means of securing vnc connections. In my case the
localost connection is achieved by tunneling vnc connections over ssh.

Bug#405342: libwrap0: hosts.deny becomes useless

2007-01-03 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Janusz Krzysztofik wrote:

Maybe vino does not provide libwrap with valid server socket data, like
in the case of tcpdmatch without server address specified? Maybe other
applications don't do as well? If this is the case, I think libwrap must
 be patched for security.

That is why I filed the bug report and set the severity as high as I
did. None of the tests I performed indicated that the version of
libwrap in testing/unstable were respecting hosts.deny at all. As it
stands currently, you can utilized a valid documented method of calling
the hosts_ctl function (from the manpage):

 int hosts_ctl(daemon, client_name, client_addr, client_user)

 hosts_ctl()  is  a wrapper around the request_init() and hosts_access()
routines with a perhaps more convenient interface (though it does not
pass on enough information to support automated client username
lookups). The client host address, client host name and username argu-
ments should contain valid data or STRING_UNKNOWN. hosts_ctl() returns
zero if access should be denied.

as vino does (server/libvncserver/sockets.c):

if(!hosts_ctl(vnc,STRING_UNKNOWN,inet_ntoa(addr.sin_addr),
STRING_UNKNOWN)) {
   rfbLog(Rejected connection from client %s\n,
  inet_ntoa(addr.sin_addr));
   close(sock);
   return;
}

and the configuration in hosts.deny will be effectively ignored.

Bug#405342: libwrap0: hosts.deny becomes useless

2007-01-02 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Package: libwrap0
Version: 7.6.dbs-11
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

$ /usr/sbin/tcpdchk -v
Using network configuration file: /etc/inetd.conf

 Rule /etc/hosts.allow line 15:
daemons: SSHD
clients: ALL
access: granted

 Rule /etc/hosts.deny line 20:
daemons: ALL
clients: ALL EXCEPT 127.0.0.1
access: denied

The above are the only rules in effect.

$ /usr/sbin/tcpdmatch vnc 127.0.0.1
warning: vnc: no such process name in /etc/inetd.conf
client: address 127.0.0.1
server: process vnc
access: granted

So far so good... the execption in hosts.deny should cause this one to
be allowed.

$ /usr/sbin/tcpdmatch vnc 192.168.10.178
warning: vnc: no such process name in /etc/inetd.conf
client: address 192.168.10.178
server: process vnc
access: granted

Why is this granted? It shouldn't be.

The same is true if the exception is removed:

$ /usr/sbin/tcpdchk -v
Using network configuration file: /etc/inetd.conf

 Rule /etc/hosts.allow line 15:
daemons: SSHD
clients: ALL
access: granted

 Rule /etc/hosts.deny line 21:

Still access granted. However, moving back to the version of libwrap0
in stable (7.6.dbs-8) results in:

$ /usr/sbin/tcpdmatch vnc 192.168.10.178
warning: vnc: no such process name in /etc/inetd.conf

the changes likely need to be reviewed to see if they revert whatever

I wanted to update the vino package to link with libwrap, but I didn't
understand the config.h.in part of your patch: which software is using
the #define? I couldn't fine any such use in vino, nor in the libwrap
 header files.

The existing source includes the logic and routines to support libwrap
already, specifically in server/libvncserver/sockets.c:

#ifdef USE_LIBWRAP
#include syslog.h
#include tcpd.h
int allow_severity=LOG_INFO;
int deny_severity=LOG_WARNING;
#endif

...

#ifdef USE_LIBWRAP
if(!hosts_ctl(vnc,STRING_UNKNOWN,inet_ntoa(addr.sin_addr),
  STRING_UNKNOWN)) {
rfbLog(Rejected connection from client %s\n,
   inet_ntoa(addr.sin_addr));
close(sock);
return;
}
#endif

However, I could not find a means within the existing package to trigger
these blocks without manually including the define in some way. Once
USE_LIBWRAP is defined, the support is included in the resultant package.

Bug#354850: Leaving the system broken? wontfix?

2006-10-08 Thread Jamin W. Collins
I don't agree with the severity classification or tagging of either of
these bug reports.

The end result for anyone struck by this bug (same for both reports) is
that MySQL is either removed or left in a non-functional state. Sure,
they can remove the offending database, losing the data. They could
also go through some convoluted work around (assuming they have another
system lying around).

The proper severity for this bug appears to be Important, a bug which
has a major effect on the usability of a package, without rendering it
completely unusable to everyone. This is clearly the case for those
effected.

I'll admit, one of my packages mediamate uses ISAM tables. I wasn't
aware they were being phased out. I don't normally go hunting through
the syslog looking for errors/warnings when things are working. I
suspect many other Debian users are in the same boat.

This problem needs to be properly addressed prior to etch's release.
With properly being in such a way as to allow the admin of the box a
clean method of updating the tables or automatically performing the
update for them. Leaving them with a broken installation or completely
without MySQL after the upgrade isn't an option that should be
considered viable for etch.

This is exactly as I have it on my current production systems, no errors.

Changing it to

ip port=52220.0.0.0/ip

makes it work, and jabber will bind to the port (the same must be done for
port 5269) and afterwards jabber will show up in `netstat -ltpn`.

Perhaps this is a change due to newer libraries in unstable? I'll see
if I can replicate it.

Also might be interesting to see if you have the same issue as the

I'll probably move dbus to S21 or something later on, having nscd running when
dbus is started is indeed nice to have (Should save some ldap queries on system

I've done some further experimentation and it appears that a simple
change to the current libnss-ldap package corrects most of the problems
for me. The patch is attached. If you could test this packaging change
with 251-5. Rolling back to 238-1.2 did correct all libnss-ldap related
problems I was experiencing, but it seems this packaging change (small
