Bug#893738: certbot: ssl-cert group should be able to read certs

2018-03-21 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: certbot
Version: 0.10.2-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

debian provides a group "ssl-cert" (maybe this is part of snakeoil?)
this group should probably have read permission to the certificates
generated by certbot.

I was installing "prayer" webmail server and it refued to start in TLS
mode using my letsencrypt cert.

This seems to fix it.

 chmod g+x/etc/letsencrypt/live/ /etc/letsencrypt/archive/
 chown :ssl-cert  /etc/letsencrypt/live/ /etc/letsencrypt/archive/

Read access on those directories is not needed (only execute is needed)
but denying read is probably not significantly improving security, all
the hidden filenames are easy to guess.

do not mention the AuthBasicProvider parameter which seems to be
neccessary to use this module with apache 2.4 Authtype Basic

without this option apache tries to use file-based auth and barfs with
a cryptic error message.

Bug#785669: auth_pgsql: user is a reserved word

2015-05-18 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: libapache2-mod-auth-pgsql
Version: 2.0.3-6.1
Severity: important
File: auth_pgsql

Dear Maintainer,

file:///usr/share/doc/libapache2-mod-auth-pgsql/mod_auth_pgsql.html

user is a reserved word in SQL trying to use it with mod_auth_pgsql
produces invlaid queries

 http://www.postgresql.org/docs/8.4/static/sql-keywords-appendix.html

as user resolves to the current database user this may produce
uexpected results, Ite SQL is syntactically correct but semantically
incorrect (it will appear to work when the only row in the auth table
matches the database username)

I suggest substituting username instead in the examples.

  Auth_PG_uid_field username

Else quote it correctly double quotes for postgresql
identifies and single quotes for apache to retain the double quotes:

  Auth_PG_uid_field 'user'

but that is a potential foot-gun id the operator forgets to use double
quotes:

  update valid_users set password=md5('foo') where user='fred';

This is syntactically valid SQL, but semantically incorrect:
it has no effect unless I am database user fred, if I am it
updates every row in valid_user with the new password.

Bug#706901: exim4: syntax-check errors go into paniclog

2013-05-05 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: exim4
Version: 4.72-6+squeeze3
Severity: normal

When editing the config and attempting to reload it syntax errors are
often detected this is good that an error in the master config is
trapped before it effects the running daemon.

What's not so good is that these errors are recorded in paniclog
and have to be cleaned out of there else they will get mailed to people

It would be nice if the checking of
  /var/lib/exim4/config.autogenerated.tmp
could write its logs (particularly paniclog) to a different location
(stderr is probably sufficient)

Bug#695820: /usr/sbin/exipick: not setuid

2012-12-12 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: exim4-base
Version: 4.72-6+squeeze2
Severity: normal
File: /usr/sbin/exipick

exipick is not installed setuid, and as a result people granted
mail administrator privileges in the exim config file are
not able to use it. This is a shame as it is more capable (and less
buggy) than exiqgrep, which they can use.

I don't know if it's safe to make exipick setuid. my work-around has
been to use sudo in nopasswd: mode.

Bug#660160: php-mail-mimedecode: _decodeHeader is recursive

2012-02-16 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: php-mail-mimedecode
Version: 1.5.0-3
Severity: normal

_decodeHeader is recursive in nature re-parsing its output until no
more is found. this leads to some headers that contain encoded versions
of what looks like RFC2047 data to be misrepresented,

EG: test =?us-ascii?B?PT9VVEYtOD9RP3h4Pz0=?= 123
should decode to test =?UTF-8?Q?xx?= 123
but does not.

it also folds all character sets together losing some of the
information it it meant to retrieve,

here is a corrected version which consistently outputs utf-8:

function _decodeHeader($input) /* undo rfc2047 encoding */
{
$output='';
// Remove white space between encoded-words
$input = preg_replace('/(=\?[^?]+\?(q|b)\?[^?]*\?=)(\s)+=\?/i', '\1=?',
$input);

// For each encoded-word...
while (preg_match('/(=\?([^?]+)\?(q|b)\?([^?]*)\?=)/i', $input,
$matches)) {

$encoded  = $matches[1];
$charset  = $matches[2];
$encoding = $matches[3];
$text = $matches[4];

switch (strtolower($encoding)) {
case 'b':
$text = base64_decode($text);
break;

case 'q':
$text = str_replace('_', ' ', $text);
preg_match_all('/=([a-f0-9]{2})/i', $text, $matches);
foreach($matches[1] as $value)
$text = str_replace('='.$value, chr(hexdec($value)),
$text);
break;
}

$text= iconv($charset,'UTF-8',$text); // you may not want this?

$pos=strpos($input,$encoded);
$len=strlen($encoded);
$output.=substr($input,0,$pos).$text;
$input=substr($input,$pos+$len);
}
$output .= $input;
return $output;
}

Bug#649542: exim_mailstats: exim_mailstats fails to bootstrap

2011-11-21 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: munin-node
Version: 1.4.5-3
Severity: normal
File: exim_mailstats

symptom: munin node returns nonsense values like these:

# munin node at srv1.smtpcorp.com
fetch exim_mailstats
received.value DMK
completed.value DOM
rejected.value FBT

when this is encountered a work-around is to edit the
var/lib/munin/plugin-state/exim_mailstats-*
files and replace the upper-case letters after line two with 0

eg:
 sed '3,$ s/[A-Z]*/0/' -i /var/lib/munin/plugin-state/exim_mailstats-*

This causes it to begin outputting numbers, I don't know if the
numbers are correct.

exim has the follwing set. which may effect the log file content
sufficiently to confuse the plugin:

MAIN_LOG_SELECTOR=+smtp_confirmation -skip_delivery -retry_defer

the bug could to be line 221:

221:  $received = $completed = $rejected = 'U';

which could be changed to

221:  $received = $completed = $rejected = '0';

or possibly these lines:

118:$received++;
121:$completed++;
124:$rejected++;

which if changed to

118:$received+=1;
121:$completed+=1;
124:$rejected+=1;

also results in sensible behaviour

the problem seems to be the difference between ++ and +=1

jasen$ perl -e '$a='U' ; $a ++ ; print $a\n;'

V

jasen$ perl -e '$a='U' ; $a +=1 ; print $a\n;'

Package: postgresql-client
Version: 8.4.8-0squeeze2

psql --help

suggests that the default database name is user's system account username
however the default database is actually the same as the value of the
username parameter and only takes the system user name if neither is
specified.

perhaps it should say

building the packages from source requires libmysqlclient-dev be

or warned of in a meaningful way.

gd circumvents php's built-in memory limit
it easy to far exceed the memory limit by using
imagecreate with large parameters, probably also possible
using imagecreatefrom* too.

perhaps gdFree() and gdAlloc() can be hijacked to track usage?

Bug#631457: detail

2011-06-24 Thread Jasen Betts
the problem seems to be the slightly experimental code (so called in
the source!) in deliver.c

If it sees address_count_max == 1 it doesn't try to route multiple
messages through a connection even when this would be desirable:

here's a patch that seems to work for my usage case,
someone who really understands this stuff should probably review it.

there may well be more wrong with the experimental code than just this
case, and/or my code may break other cases.

exim should keep the connection until connection_max_messages
have been sent however it seems to stop after max_rcpt instead

to reproduce:

add the follwing global setting:

 remote_max_parallel = 1

add the following settings to the remote_smtp: transport

 max_rcpt=1
 connection_max_messages = 500

and then send a single email to multiple recipients at any remote domain

exim discards the connection and opens a new one between each email,
ignoring the setting connection_max_messages = 500

Bug#608442: Input of non-ASCII characters broken

2011-01-14 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: postgresql
Version: 8.4.5-0squeeze2
Severity: normal

I'm seeing this too, in older versions of psql I could paste any
unicode text that didn't have control characters and it would work
correctly, this is no longer the case.

this possibly stems from a recent change to psql to use libedit instead
of libreadline

as a work around you can disable libedit by doing

cat | psql instead of psql

but that also disables all the useful editing features.

If the first file is stored file gets the required zip version wrong.

deflate compression needs atleast version 2.0 to extract

I think file is currently trying to determine required zip version
from the header of the first file record. this often yeilds misleading
information.

Bug#598676: python2.6: csv.reader is not suited to realtime

2010-09-30 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: python2.6
Version: 2.6.5-1ubuntu6
Severity: normal

The implementation of the python csv.reader means that it cannot be
used as a realtime filter as it wants to read all of the input before
it returns any records. :(

I had intended to use it to translate asterisk CDR records to a
different format in a pipeline fed by 'tail -f cdrfile.csv'

import csv
import sys
print 'enter some lines of CSV data'
csvin = csv.reader(sys.stdin,lineterminator='\n')
for row in csvin:
print 'SEPARATOR'.join(row)

print 'SEPARATOR'.join(row)

I guess my only option is perl shudder, or messing around with internal pipes

import csv,sys,os
input=sys.stdin.readline()
while input !=  :
xin,xout=os.pipe()
os.write(xout,input)
fxin=os.fdopen(xin)
csvin=csv.reader(fxin,lineterminator='\n')
os.close(xout)
for row in csvin:
print 'SEPARATOR'.join(row)
fxin.close
input=sys.stdin.readline()
# but this only works with single-line csv records :(

Bug#587065: udev breaks everything

Package: udev

Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

running   /etc/init.d/udev start

Bug#586771: parport_pc: autodetect work, io=0x378 doesn't

2010-06-22 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: linux-image-2.6.30-bpo.2-686
Version: 2.6.30-7~bpo50+1
Severity: normal

 I have a second parallel port that needs parport_pc parameters to
 operate and works when they are given, so I need a way to either tell
 parport_pc to use the autodetected port and the one I specify or tell
 or be able to specify the equivalent of the autodetected port.

 the followin outlines my attempts load the main parallel port driver
 with explicit port numbers

if I do

 # modprobe parport_pc

i get dmesg

 [3443.352797] parport_pc 00:07: activated
 [3443.352807] parport_pc 00:07: reported by Plug and Play ACPI
 [3443.352918] parport0: PC-style at 0x378 (0x778), irq 7 [PCSPP,TRISTATE,EPP]

which works

but if I do

 # modprobe parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7

i get dmesg

 [3988.717925] parport 0x378 (WARNING): CTR: wrote 0x0c, read 0xff

Bug#585096: /usr/bin/w.procps: w truncates pipe output

2010-06-09 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: procps
Version: 1:3.2.7-11
Severity: normal
File: /usr/bin/w.procps

In adition to all ther other /usr/bin/w output formatting bugs,
here's another.

If w's output is not a tty

eg:  w | cat

The output is now truncated at 80 characters.
The old behavior was to not truncate.
There seems to be no way to turn this off or force
the width to some other size.

now I can't use w in my script anymore.

Bug#584111: iso-codes: Maori language translations have diaresis where it should be macron

2010-06-01 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: iso-codes
Version: 3.5.1-1
Severity: minor

Some of the Maori translations have the wrong diacritical marks in
that they have a diaresis instead of a macron.

As the Maori language does not use the diaresis the cure is simple
run this command in the source directory.

sed -i '/^msgstr/ y/ÄËÏÖÜäëïöü/ĀĒĪŌŪāēīōū/' */mi.po

Using the diaresis instead of the macron was a hack for systems that
couldn't handle unicode, the user was expected to use a typeface
that had macron in place of diaresis. There was never a special
codepage, Just windows-1252 with a modified typeface :(

Bug#580641: STK200: -E has no effect

2010-05-07 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: avrdude
Version: 5.6-1
Severity: important

sometimes something causes the parallel port to be left in a state
where the reset pin or data pins are driven high by the
STK200 programmer

In this state there no way to reset the port using avrdude
as the -E parameter is being ignored.

This seems like an oversight, for although the STK200 by design cannot
power the target AVR it can interfere with its operation.

it also denies the use of the STK 200 for togling the RESET line etc...

when I get into this bind I find that writing 0xff to the data pins of
the parallel port gets things working again.

The psql man page mentions ~/.pgpass in the Connecting To A Database

Some sort of mention in the Files section would be nice.
(even ~/.pgpass file: see 'Connecting To a Database', above would
have saved me some time)

Also there no mention of what file is equivalent (if any) on windows.

Bug#557624: uisp: cannot write attiny2313 flash via STK200

2009-11-23 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: uisp
Version: 20050207-4

I have a STK200 (parallel port) programmer and atTiny2313 part
I can't write the flash of this part using uisp, but I can read the
chip-id and flash, erase the part, read and write the eeprom,

using avrdude and the exact same hardware I was able to write the
flash so I suspect it is a software problem, avrdude uses /dev/parport0
so it's working via the kernel instead of direct to the hardware.

Uisp does work fine with a at90s2313 part and the same hardware.
so it does not seem to be a configuration issue, just that the flash
writes never work on ATtiny2313,

Bug#547639: audacity: would be nice to see better curve-fitting at extreme zooms

2009-09-21 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: audacity
Version: 1.3.5-2+lenny1
Severity: wishlist

It would be nice to see better curve-fitting at extreme zooms
eg create a 19Khz tone in a 44.1Khz sampled track
and zoom in so 3ms fills the screen

It would be nice to see something resembling a textbook sine wave

Perhaps this can be approximated using
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whittaker–Shannon_interpolation_formula

It feels like it'd be compute-heavy (even with a purpose generated
table-based sinc function and integer arithmetic) so possibly should be
an option (Sigma 0 to infinity looks problematic too)

The change-speed effect seems to contain the neccessary functionality
if I slow the track by 90% I now see something resembling the textbook sine

Bug#536462: linux-image-2.6.18-6-686: weird

2009-07-09 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-6-686
Version: http weirdness
Severity: normal

cat /tmp/reportbug-linux-image-20090710-10929-GjawKA
Subject: linux-image-2.6.18-6-686: packet loss in http traffic
Package: linux-image-2.6.18-6-686
Version: 2.6.18.dfsg.1-24etch2
Severity: normal

I'm seeing lots of what appears to be packet loss in traffic from the site
http://www.cv-it.com, performance inproves if I use kernel 2.6.18.5
but improves further if I use windows XP. upgrading linux to 2.6.26 does not
help
noticeably.

(upgrading XP to linux 2.6.26 helps, but not with this :)

On linux I'm using the same versions of libc and telnet binaries. (wget and
normal browsers exhibit this too, but telnet only depends on libc so it was
was chosen the comparison) As far as I can tell the only difference is the
kernel.

the server at cv-it.com claims to be Microsoft-IIS/7.0

I have set up 2 vmware machines on a lenny-based host and can do experiments
and comparisons there. (the fact that host is running kernel 2.6.26 does not
seem to effect the VMs)

Bug#535962: /usr/share/postgresql-common/pg_wrapper: now way to use newer binaries

2009-07-06 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: postgresql-client-common
Version: 97
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/share/postgresql-common/pg_wrapper

postgresql reccomends using the pg_dump version that matches the
destination database. but pg_wrapper does not
provide a way to do this.

Obvously dumps made for backups should use the matching version of
pg_dump, but for upgrades there should be a way to use the new version.

perhaps a switch like --use-binary-version=8.4
or --use-binary-version=latest

libcrypto is using the uninitialised data as an entropy source.

It seems a -DPURIFY verion of libcrypto is needed for silent operation
with valgrind.

2009-04-10 Thread Jasen Betts

three rooms north of the teleporter there's a corpse.
when 'taking' to it pressing space mutilple times when
the text appears seems to cause a lockup, pressing
space once only seems safe.

Also when you die it gives the option quit to windows

Bug#510820: /usr/share/gconf/defaults/50_debian-edu-artwork.entries: dependancy on iceweasel

2009-01-04 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: debian-edu-artwork
Version: 0.0.28
Severity: normal
File: /usr/share/gconf/defaults/50_debian-edu-artwork.entries

the file

/usr/share/gconf/defaults/50_debian-edu-artwork.entries

creates gconf keys that refer to 'iceweasel' for the desktop's default
browser:

 desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command
 desktop/gnome/url-handlers/https/command
 desktop/gnome/applications/browser/exec

but the debian-edu-artwork package itself does not depend on iceweasel.
 So where debian-edu-artwork is installed without iceweasel (I prefer iceape)
url links in terminals etc fail with a cryptic error message.

althog making debian-edu-artwork require iceweasel would fix this bug
I feel the gconfd settings referring to iceweasel belong in a
gnome-iceweasel-integration package and not in this package.

Bug#506645: slrn: (debian) libuudeview not linked

2008-11-23 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: slrn
Version: 0.9.9~pre111-1
Severity: normal

libuu is not linked in the build process even though --with-uudeview
is specified to configure

For some reason the configure script generated by autoconf does not
find uudeview.h in /usr/include

A work-around I found was to add --with-uu=/usr
to the confgure command.

I did this by appending it to line 8 of debian/rules thusly:

WITH_UUDEV := --with-uudeview --with-uu=/usr

someone who undestands autotools (better than I) should probably investigate
further.

Bug#497218: /usr/bin/find: -mount doesn't reliably detect bind mounts

2008-08-30 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: findutils
Version: 4.4.0-2
Severity: wishlist
File: /usr/bin/find

the -mount option of find doesn't reliably tetect -bind mounts.

# cd /tmp
# mkdir target
# mkdir -p test/point
# mount --bind target test/point
# touch target/testfile
# find test -mount

produces output

test
test/point
test/point/testfile

I realise that this behavior is not out of line with that described in
the man page but feel that having find stop when it hits the
mount-point would be a useful option too.

detecting the mount point traversal seems tricky
after confirming same-file-system comparing the inode for .. and
it's expected value won't work where the mount and its mount point
are in the same directory

Maybe asking the kernel is the only way, but even that could prove
challenging...

 Needless to say, it works for me :-)

 Is your temporary folder (/tmp or TMPDIR) mounted with the -noexec flag?

Ah yes, I was messing with /tmp about 3 weeks ago.

 If so, what you see is the expected behavior. Set TMPDIR environment
 variable to point to somewhere that isn't mounted with -noexec and try
 again.

Indeed, that fixes it. thanks.

 Upstream checks this situation and gives a more verbose error message. I
 will try to add support for an alternative environment variable as well,
 so that you don't move the TMPDIR for all of the applications
 fakeroot-ng runs, only it itself.

perhaps /dev/shm would be a good alternative location for the file?

Bye.

I put a small piece of code that does uint8_t division (modulo (%)
operator actually) in a function and called it from an isr
this worked fine until I started making heavy use of modulo and division
in the main part of the program - suddenly the main part stops
working

moving the modulo operation into the ISR caused the bug to go away.

Bug#416976: procps: top eats 100% cpu

2008-03-08 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: procps
Version: 1:3.2.7-3
Followup-For: Bug #416976

I get the same behavior here. Also, it doesn't have to be root,
su to any user id has the same effect.

top exits nicely when it gets a SIGHUP,
Possibly this is a bug in su? or bash?

'login' Version: 1:4.0.18.1-7
'bash'  Version: 3.1dfsg-8

hmm, gdb didn't detect a sighup... maybe it is su at fault.

Bug#469950: login: su blocks SIGHUP

2008-03-08 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: login

starting some tasks (eg: top - see Debian Bug #416976) in an xterm after
using su can lead to undesirable behavior if the xterm is closed.

After a little testing, it seems that the child process never gets
the SIGHUP which it normally gets when su is not used (or it is used
and logged out of) and then the xterm is closed

 Is it possible that you're running into the situation described in this
 OpenSSH FAQ entry?

   2.9 - sftp/scp fails at connection, but ssh is OK.

   sftp and/or scp may fail at connection time if you have shell
   initialization (.profile, .bashrc, .cshrc, etc) which produces output
   for non-interactive sessions. This output confuses the sftp/scp
   client. You can verify if your shell is doing this by executing:

   ssh yourhost /usr/bin/true

   If the above command produces any output, then you need to modify your
   shell initialization.

That could be it, I no longer have that machine in an operating state to
confirm it. you'd better close this bug. chalk another one up for
PEBKAC :-)

Bye.

Bug#407945: abuse: aiming goes crazy in left, and down, quadrant

2007-06-17 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: abuse
Version: 1:0.7.0-5
Followup-For: Bug #407945

When shooting left, or down bullets go up/down at 45 degrees instead
of tracking the mouse pointer as they do when aiming right or up,
with pixel-perfect left-aiming I can fire horizontally or verticallt
down but only with the cursor pointing at the player sprite.

while shooting left moving the cursor left and right aims the bullets
up or down, it's as-if the X and Y coordinates are confounded somehow.

Bug#420257: bash: redirection outlasts loop with failing brace expansion

2007-04-21 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: bash
Version: 2.05b-26
Severity: normal

try the following commands:

echo $$
bash
echo $$
cat EOF tmpfile
/usr/games/xxx
/usr/games/fortune
EOF
while read a b ; do echo ${a:5:-6} ; done tmpfile
echo $$

what I see:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ echo $$
6406
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ bash
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ echo $$
6449
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ cat EOF tmpfile
 /usr/games/xxx

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ while read a b ; do echo ${a:5:-6} ; done tmpfile
bash: -6: substring expression  0
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ /usr/games/fortune
So many men; so little time.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ exit
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ echo $$
6406
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

it seems the failing brace expansion in the while loop leaves the
redirection from 1 open after the while loop terminates.

then when the contensts of the file are exhausted the shell terminates.

Bug#407526: wget: chunk support broken

Package: wget

what I did was capture a HTTP response using netcat and then feed it to wget
using netcat

netcat didn't successfuly see the end of the file. - I think it may be
relying on chunk boundaries being aligned with packet boundaries.

the response I was sending looked like this... (data part abbreviated)

Bug#389485: gv: crashes when I select save, root

2006-09-25 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: gv
Version: 1:3.6.1-13
Severity: normal

If I open a ps document (seems to be well-formed, it was
produced using latex, it displays fine) and select [save all],
and then click the [\] button, gv locks up stops refreshing
its windows and won't quit for anything less than a SIGKILL.

The only unusual thing about this system that I can think of is an
unavailable nfs mount (mounted but physically disconnected) but that's
three  directories above the root.

Bug#380422: sn: crossposts are not reflected in the xref line

2006-07-29 Thread Jasen Betts
Package: sn
Version: 0.3.8-3
Severity: normal

when crossposted messages are inported via the NNTP post command
upon reading the article the Xref: line lists only the current newgroup and
message-number. this defeats the capability of many newsreaders (eg slrn)
to mark all copies of the message as read (as it can't determine the message
number for the other newsgroups).

AFAICT other news-servers put an Xref: line listing all the groups and article
numbers.
