Bug#954921: Fixed in upstread README
I removed the mention of Perl from the Readme that was used as the basis for the description. The sentence in question was changed to.. "My goal in writing this script was to provide all the functionality of all the various terminal color displaying scripts found around the web in one place with some additional bells and whistles." That is, I changed "various Perl and sh scripts" to "various terminal color displaying scripts". -- John Eikenberry [ j...@zhar.net - http://zhar.net ] "Perfection is attained, not when no more can be added, but when no more can be removed." -- Antoine de Saint-Exupery
Bug#940077: usrmerge: Removeable?
Package: usrmerge Version: 21 Severity: minor Dear Maintainer, The documentation include about the Removal of the package says... "The package should not be removed unless all the installed packages among the ones listed in /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/usrmerge have been fixed to properly support usrmerge, or upgrading them will fail." There is no /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/usrmerge file. Does this mean it is OK to remove the usrmerge package? Seems like it should be as buster comes this way by default w/o usrmerge installed. If so, would you please consider updating the documentation. Bug#868491: eth0 missing from /run/network/ifstate
Package: chrony Version: 3.0-4 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, After upgrading to stretch I noticed my network was not registering correctly. By this I mean that even though the network (eth0) came up and worked, it didn't have an entry in /run/network/ifstate (the ifstate file was empty). This is using ifupdown + ifplugd in a setup that worked fine on jessie and works fine now after removing chrony. It took me a while to nail down the problem, but I finally noticed this kept showing up in my log. run-parts: /etc/network/if-up.d/chrony exited with return code 1 When I put an 'exit 0' at the top of that script my networking came up fine and was added to /run/network/ifstate. So by exiting with an error that script was preventing ifup from completing the ifstate registration. Bug#725746: screen corruption patch
I took the patch from http://bugs.musicpd.org/view.php?id=3771 and backported it to 5.10 (they moved the function to a different source file). It seems to have fixed it for me. I've attached the backported patch. Maybe it could get applied to the current version until they roll a new release. Bug#718613: linux-image-3.10-1-amd64: hang on nfs mount
This looks to be a very similar issue to #714736. It was trying to use version 4.0 w/out kerberos installed and any of the supporting rpc daemons running. My particular problem stemmed from my autofs setup not having a nfs version specified. When I added nfsvers=3 to the options it stopped hanging. I think the default must have changed from v3 to v4. Anyways, that resolved the issue to my satisfaction and I think this bug was just a configuration issue for me. You may close it at your convenience (and maybe move it to nfs-common or nfs-kernel-server). Bug#686391: acpi-support: screen doesn't lock on resume from suspend
Package: acpi-support Version: 0.140-5 Severity: normal I have LOCK_SCREEN=true in /etc/default/acpi-support and noticed a while back that it stopped working. Finally got around to debugging it. In the script /usr/share/acpi-support/screenblank it loops over the contents of /tmp/.X11-unix using these to check for displays. In the script it sets the variable displaynum to the numberic suffix of the X contents of that directory. On my system it contains 1 file 'X0', so displaynum gets set to '0'. In getXuser from /usr/share/acpi-support/power-funcs it sets a local variable display to :$displaynum or :0 in my case. getXuser gets the uid of the running user via parsing the output of ck-list-sessions with an awk script. That awk script does an exact match against the x11-display setting output of ch-list-sessions, which is ':0.0'. So it compares ':0' against ':0.0' and fails. So it never gets the uid and thus fails to set XUSER which means the call to xtrlock (the lock program I use) fails as it doesn't run it as the user. The fix could be handled in variable places. Bug#645965: mr: Can't register local git repo

Though they are all hg based (I'm switching to git though). There is no origin url for the repository. mr register could configure it with a dummy checkout command: [tmp] checkout = no url known for this repository But then what if someone runs mr on a repository that has no origin url, but does have some other remote url? It would be surprising for the above to result, but mr can't go guessing about which other url to use in such a case. So I think it's better that mr register not try to support your case. I would have thought that with the connections to the VCS-Home project or just in general this would be a more common setup. Having a repo with no remotes is one of the nice things about DVCs. But no matter. Is there any mr workaround to get it working with a local-only repo? Bug#608420: pythoncomplete.vim error
Package: vim Version: 2:7.3.035+hg~8fdc1210-1 Severity: normal When writing a new python module (ie. and empty file), if you start it with a module level doc string at the top and try to complete something in that doc sting before closing it you get a traceback (below). It is caused by an uninitialized variable in the exception handling block (parserline). This variable is only set via the return values from the tokenizer which is where the error is occurring (TokenError, EOF in multi-line string). The most obvious fix is just to make sure this variable is initialized in the __init__ method as I've done in the attached patch (diff vs hg default of this day). I've reproduced this against upstream hg repo and have also reported it there along with the same patch (related code didn't change). --- here's the traceback, sans all but one of the vim error lines Error detected while processing function pythoncomplete#Complete: line 35: Traceback (most recent call last): File string, line 1, in module File string, line 34, in vimcomplete File string, line 57, in evalsource File string, line 515, in parse AttributeError: PyParser instance has no attribute 'parserline' Hope this helps. -- System Information: Debian Release: squeeze/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing') Architecture: i386 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages vim depends on: ii libacl1 2.2.49-4Access control list shared library ii libc62.11.2-7Embedded GNU C Library: Shared lib ii libgpm2 1.20.4-3.3 General Purpose Mouse - shared lib ii libncurses5 5.7+20100313-4 shared libraries for terminal hand ii libselinux1 2.0.96-1SELinux runtime shared libraries ii vim-common 2:7.3.035+hg~8fdc1210-1 Vi IMproved - Common files ii vim-runtime 2:7.3.035+hg~8fdc1210-1 Vi IMproved - Runtime files vim recommends no packages. Bug#594477: Alternative fix (Was: rinse: Fail to install 32bits chroot on 64bits system)
Yum/rpm respect a platform setting in /etc/rpm/platform. So an alternative to this fix would be to create that file with the appropriate contents in the post-install.sh script before the 'yum install yum' step is run. It might look something like this... # specify platform arch=i386 if [ ${ARCH} = amd64 ] ; then arch=x86_64 fi echo $arch-redhat-linux ${prefix}/etc/rpm/platform Note as a workaround you don't need to patch the setup to get it to work. Bug#587571: Drag URL to chromium and liferea crashes
Package: liferea Version: 1.6.3-1 Severity: important When dragging a URL from a story to chromium, liferea crashes. When dragging the URL to iceweasel nothing happens. What used to happen with iceweasel was that the URL would be opened in iceweasel. I spoke to the devs on IRC about this and they reproduced it w/ iceweasel and firefox. Bug#576695: better alternative
I have an improved version of this program that I wrote awhile back. It detects and displays colors for 8, 16, 88, and 256 color terminals. It has 3 display modes, and provides a handy 88-256 color value conversion utility. It is written in python (2.5+) and uses curses for terminal detection. It has no dependencies on any non-core python modules. You can download it from the link below. http://zhar.net/projects/shell/terminal_colors I'm a long term Debian user and would be happy to help with the package. -- John Eikenberry [...@zhar.net - http://zhar.net] [PGP public key @ http://zhar.net/jae_at_zhar_net.gpg] __ Perfection is attained, not when no more can be added, but when no more can be removed. -- Antoine de Saint-Exupery signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#546527: More info on menu hang bug
I ran into this bug today and did a bit of digging. Thought I'd pass that along. First note that this bug effects all of the rxvt-unicode variants, not just rxvt-unicode-ml. Also note that killing X11 isn't required, Ctrl-Alt-F1 still works to switch to the console where you can kill urxvt and un-freeze X11. First a resource dump. Corresponding Ubuntu bug. https://bugs.launchpad.net/archlinux/+source/rxvt-unicode/+bug/317366 rxvt-unicode ml threads (2 threads; links to first posts) http://lists.schmorp.de/pipermail/rxvt-unicode/2009q3/001035.html http://lists.schmorp.de/pipermail/rxvt-unicode/2009q3/001042.html According to urxvt ml thread this is an xorg bug. Ubuntu applied the patch from the second ml thread listed above, but upstream decided against it as it was an xorg bug. They considered a compile time option for the workaround but decided it 'broke' things and didn't belong in the urxvt codebase. The dev I spoke to on irc (schmorp) said he thought it was a decent enough temporary workaround as long as it was removed once the xorg bug was fixed. So I have attached the patch to this as a possible fix. If you're looking to just prevent the hang you can disable the popup menus via an .Xresources tweak. Bug#517976: significantly more cpu usage on armel than before
dmix forces everybody to play at 48kHz. So, yes, that's possible. You can control this in your .asoundrc using the rate parameter. I have it set to 44100 in mine so that it doesn't have to re-sample my music. I included a simple example below. I also set the period_size size in the example. I found that setting it to 2048 totally eliminated the pops and crackles when listening to online radio. pcm.card0 { type hw card 0 } ctl.card0 { type hw card 0 } pcm.mix { type dmix ipc_key 1234 slave { pcm card0 period_size 2048 rate 44100 } } pcm.!default mix -- John Eikenberry [...@zhar.net - http://zhar.net] [PGP public key @ http://zhar.net/jae_at_zhar_net.gpg] __ Perfection is attained, not when no more can be added, but when no more can be removed. -- Antoine de Saint-Exupery signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#484830: possible workaround
I also was experiencing this when using xcompmgr with the '-c' option in combination with rxvt-unicode using its RGBA transparency mode. I only get this problem when using the '-c' option. After some experimentation what finally fixed it for me was to add the '-f' option to the xcompmgr call. It seems something about -f fixes the -c issue. Bug#432320: nvidia-graphics-modules-i386 - missing updates for 2.6.21
Randall Donald wrote: Well there is a patch (http://grizach.sc18.info/nvpatch/) for 2.6.21 but I'm not sure how legal it is regarding the paravirtualization gpl-only problem. I have only become aware of the workaround recently (at least one that had an explanation) and had hoped 2.6.22 would be out by now. I'll investigate integrating it then. 2.6.22 has been in unstable for a few weeks now.
