Bug#954921: Fixed in upstread README

2020-03-31 Thread John Eikenberry

I removed the mention of Perl from the Readme that was used as the basis for
the description. The sentence in question was changed to..

"My goal in writing this script was to provide all the functionality of all
the various terminal color displaying scripts found around the web in one
place with some additional bells and whistles."

That is, I changed "various Perl and sh scripts" to "various terminal color
displaying scripts".

Bug#940077: usrmerge: Removeable?

2019-09-11 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: usrmerge
Version: 21
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

The documentation include about the Removal of the package says...

"The package should not be removed unless all the installed packages
among the ones listed in /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/usrmerge have been fixed
to properly support usrmerge, or upgrading them will fail."

There is no /etc/dpkg/dpkg.cfg.d/usrmerge file. Does this mean it is OK to
remove the usrmerge package? Seems like it should be as buster comes this way
by default w/o usrmerge installed.

If so, would you please consider updating the documentation.

Thanks.

Bug#927435: upgrade-reports: Buster upgrade: had to re-create unbound certs/keys

After upgrading to buster, unbound-control would fail to run with this error..

To fix this I had to regenerate the certs and keys by removing the old ones and
running unbound-control-setup, then restarting unbound. This fixed the issue.

$ cd /etc/unbound/
$ sudo rm *.key *.pem
$ sudo unbound-control-setup
$ sudo systemctl restart unbound

Note that with unbound-control broken, that broke `systemctl reload unbound` as
it depends on unbound-control.

Bug#927379: upgrade-reports: Buster upgrade issue with /var/run

2019-04-18 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: upgrade-reports
Severity: normal

If /var/run is a directory and not a sym-link to /run, systemd-logind.service
will fail to run with the error:

Failed to connect to system bus: No such file or directory

This caused various issues with the system as users could login but their
session (no /run/user/ directory nor any XDG_* env variables) wasn't setup.

The issue was fixed when I replaced the directory /var/run with a sym-link to
/run.

I believe this was an issue on my system as I've been running my current
installation since the mid 2000s and until Jessie I was using testing. So I
might have hit an edge case where I missed the switch-over to the links in the
wheezy upgrade.

Bug#869402: Just poor documentation

After reading over the source I was able to get it working. Turns out to read
from stdin you have to pass '--echo'. The man page doesn't mention this, only
saying to pass --echo|-e if you want it to echo the password as entered.

So either close this bug or consider it a bug about needing better
documentation about this case.

The documentation says the 'pass insert' command should take a new password
from stdin. Instead it fails silently with a exit status of 1.

I can add passwords if I use the command interactively.

EG. starting from a new/empty store.

$ pass
Password Store
$ pass insert test
Enter password for test:
Retype password for test:
$ pass
Password Store
└── test
$ echo foo | pass insert another

$ echo $?
1
$ pass
Password Store
└── test

It should have created the password entry 'another'.

I changed that line in /etc/network/if-up.d/chrony from...

chronyc -m online 'burst 4/10' > /dev/null 2>&1

To...

chronyc online > /dev/null 2>&1

And it worked fine. No errors in the log and /run/network/ifstate had the
appropriate "eth0=eth0" entry.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Bug#868491: eth0 missing from /run/network/ifstate

2017-07-15 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: chrony
Version: 3.0-4
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

After upgrading to stretch I noticed my network was not registering correctly.
By this I mean that even though the network (eth0) came up and worked, it
didn't have an entry in /run/network/ifstate (the ifstate file was empty).

This is using ifupdown + ifplugd in a setup that worked fine on jessie and
works fine now after removing chrony.

It took me a while to nail down the problem, but I finally noticed this kept
showing up in my log.

run-parts: /etc/network/if-up.d/chrony exited with return code 1

When I put an 'exit 0' at the top of that script my networking came up fine
and was added to /run/network/ifstate. So by exiting with an error that script
was preventing ifup from completing the ifstate registration.

I ultimately fixed this issue by removing chrony and switching to openntpd.

The arch wiki has an alternative fix. They just suggest this in your xorg.conf.

It fixed it for me.

I have been experiencing the same issue with this command with the current

the version from stable.

In my case issue manifests from this use...

Ctrl+Alt+0 changes the font size via a XResources binding on urxvt. The
terminals all receive the 0 without the modifiers.

Bug#725746: screen corruption patch

I took the patch from http://bugs.musicpd.org/view.php?id=3771 and backported
it to 5.10 (they moved the function to a different source file).

It seems to have fixed it for me. I've attached the backported patch. Maybe it
could get applied to the current version until they roll a new release. If not
it is here as a workaround.

Bug#718613: linux-image-3.10-1-amd64: hang on nfs mount

2013-08-16 Thread John Eikenberry
This looks to be a very similar issue to #714736. It was trying to use version
4.0 w/out kerberos installed and any of the supporting rpc daemons running.

My particular problem stemmed from my autofs setup not having a nfs version
specified. When I added nfsvers=3 to the options it stopped hanging. I think
the default must have changed from v3 to v4.

Anyways, that resolved the issue to my satisfaction and I think this bug was
just a configuration issue for me. You may close it at your convenience (and
maybe move it to nfs-common or nfs-kernel-server).

Thanks and sorry for the red herring.

Bug#718613: linux-image-3.10-1-amd64: hang on nfs mount

2013-08-02 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: src:linux
Version: 3.10.3-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

Running almost entirely jessie/testing I installed linux-image-3.10-1-amd64
from unstable. When using it and mounting my autofs mounting NFSv3 volume it
hangs for around 15 seconds then mounts. This is recorded in syslog when
mounting right after a reboot:

Aug  2 20:46:36 neroon kernel: [  132.580086] NFS: Registering the id_resolver
key type
Aug  2 20:46:36 neroon kernel: [  132.580097] Key type id_resolver registered
Aug  2 20:46:36 neroon kernel: [  132.580099] Key type id_legacy registered

Aug  2 20:46:51 neroon kernel: [  147.595379] RPC: AUTH_GSS upcall timed out.
Aug 2 20:46:51 neroon kernel: [ 147.595379] Please check user daemon is
running.

I don't have kerberos installed and am using default sec settings. Here are my
fstab lines for the mount point.

nfs:/share/public  /share/public  nfs
noauto,user,nfsvers=3,nosuid,nolock,hard,intr,timeo=20,rw  0   0

Here is the export line on the file server.

/share/public
192.168.1.0/255.255.1.0(rw,sync,all_squash,no_subtree_check,insecure)

If I switch back to the linux-image-3.9-1-amd64 package (3.9.8-1, the latest in
testing) the hang and timout error go away.

Hope this helps.

 Hi John,

 The version is still 1.4 at

   http://zhar.net/projects/shell/terminal-colors

Just me being absent minded, I updated everything but the file itself. I just
uploaded 1.5 to that same spot. Thanks again for doing the packaging.

 Could you point me to the latest,

Bug#686391: acpi-support: screen doesn't lock on resume from suspend

2012-08-31 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: acpi-support
Version: 0.140-5
Severity: normal

I have LOCK_SCREEN=true in /etc/default/acpi-support and noticed a while back
that it stopped working. Finally got around to debugging it.

In the script /usr/share/acpi-support/screenblank it loops over the contents of
/tmp/.X11-unix using these to check for displays. In the script it sets the
variable displaynum to the numberic suffix of the X contents of that directory.
On my system it contains 1 file 'X0', so displaynum gets set to '0'.

In getXuser from /usr/share/acpi-support/power-funcs it sets a local variable
display to :$displaynum or :0 in my case.

getXuser gets the uid of the running user via parsing the output of
ck-list-sessions with an awk script. That awk script does an exact match
against the x11-display setting output of ch-list-sessions, which is ':0.0'.
So it compares ':0' against ':0.0' and fails.

So it never gets the uid and thus fails to set XUSER which means the call to
xtrlock (the lock program I use) fails as it doesn't run it as the user.

The fix could be handled in variable places. I'd probably tweak the awk script
to be more generous in what displays it matches. But you'll be a better judge
of what would be best.

Thanks.

Bug#678072: puppet-lint: fails to run

2012-06-18 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: puppet-lint
Version: 0.1.13-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,
*** Please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

$ puppet-lint
Unable to require puppet. Please gem install puppet and try again.

Running puppet-lint fails every time, with or without any arguments. This
coincided with a recent change of ruby to default to 1.9.1 instead of 1.8. The
puppet-common package, which puppet-lint depends on, doesn't include support
for 1.9.1.

You can get this working by changing the default ruby back to 1.8 using
update-alternatives. Though this seems like it will break other software
eventually.

 There is no origin url for the repository. mr register could configure it
 with a dummy checkout command:

 [tmp]
 checkout = no url known for this repository

 But then what if someone runs mr on a repository that has no origin url,
 but does have some other remote url? It would be surprising for the above to
 result, but mr can't go guessing about which other url to use in such a
 case. So I think it's better that mr register not try to support your
 case.

I would have thought that with the connections to the VCS-Home project or just
in general this would be a more common setup. Having a repo with no remotes is
one of the nice things about DVCs. But no matter.

Is there any mr workaround to get it working with a local-only repo? Or is my
best option just adding a dummy url entry to my .git/config?

Bug#608420: pythoncomplete.vim error

2010-12-30 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: vim
Version: 2:7.3.035+hg~8fdc1210-1
Severity: normal

When writing a new python module (ie. and empty file), if you start it with a
module level doc string at the top and try to complete something in that doc
sting before closing it you get a traceback (below). It is caused by an
uninitialized variable in the exception handling block (parserline). This
variable is only set via the return values from the tokenizer which is where
the error is occurring (TokenError, EOF in multi-line string).

The most obvious fix is just to make sure this variable is initialized in the
__init__ method as I've done in the attached patch (diff vs hg default of this
day).

I've reproduced this against upstream hg repo and have also reported it there
along with the same patch (related code didn't change).

--- here's the traceback, sans all but one of the vim error lines

Hope this helps.

Bug#594477: Alternative fix (Was: rinse: Fail to install 32bits chroot on 64bits system)

2010-09-02 Thread John Eikenberry

Yum/rpm respect a platform setting in /etc/rpm/platform. So an alternative to
this fix would be to create that file with the appropriate contents in the
post-install.sh script before the 'yum install yum' step is run. It might look
something like this...

# specify platform
arch=i386
if [ ${ARCH} = amd64 ] ; then
arch=x86_64
fi
echo $arch-redhat-linux  ${prefix}/etc/rpm/platform

Note as a workaround you don't need to patch the setup to get it to work. Just
run the rinse command with linux32.

$ linux32 rinse --arch i386 --distribution centos-5 ...

Bug#587571: Drag URL to chromium and liferea crashes

2010-06-29 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: liferea
Version: 1.6.3-1
Severity: important

When dragging a URL from a story to chromium, liferea crashes. When dragging
the URL to iceweasel nothing happens.

What used to happen with iceweasel was that the URL would be opened in
iceweasel.

I spoke to the devs on IRC about this and they reproduced it w/ iceweasel and
firefox. They tracked it down to webkit and noted that the latest webkit (I
think the one still in subversion at the moment) seems to fix it.

Bug#581895: redshift: Please add vidmode method support

2010-05-16 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: redshift
Version: 1.2-2
Severity: normal

On my system the randr method does not work. I read that this is common for
nvidia owners and that the vidmode method will work but the current package
isn't compiled with vidmode support:

$ redshift -m vidmode
VidMode method was not enabled at compile time.

Thanks.

Bug#581895: vidmode support

2010-05-16 Thread John Eikenberry

I rebuilt that package myself with all the necessary dependencies installed
and it built with vidmode support. See the discussion on the blog linked to
below, it discusses the possible missing packages with an ubuntu user
having the same problem. I already had every X related -dev package
installed so am not sure which were the critical ones.

Bug#576695: better alternative

2010-04-07 Thread John Eikenberry

I have an improved version of this program that I wrote awhile back. It
detects and displays colors for 8, 16, 88, and 256 color terminals. It
has 3 display modes, and provides a handy 88-256 color value conversion
utility.

It is written in python (2.5+) and uses curses for terminal detection. It
has no dependencies on any non-core python modules. You can download it
from the link below.

http://zhar.net/projects/shell/terminal_colors

I'm a long term Debian user and would be happy to help with the package.

Bug#572812: mongodb: upstart dependency conflicts with sysvinit

2010-03-06 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: mongodb
Version: 1:1.2.2-1
Severity: important

Mongodb depends on upstart-job which is only provided by upstart at this
point and it conflicts with sysvinit. This being the default boot system
for Debian currently, requiring it to be replaced for one package seems
like a bug. The discussions on debian-devel seem to back this up...

 When should maintainers start adding upstart jobs to their packages?

Not before the upstart compat package that provides upstart-job for
sysvinit-based systems is available.

Bug#546527: More info on menu hang bug

2009-11-18 Thread John Eikenberry

I ran into this bug today and did a bit of digging. Thought I'd pass that
along.

First note that this bug effects all of the rxvt-unicode variants, not just
rxvt-unicode-ml. Also note that killing X11 isn't required, Ctrl-Alt-F1
still works to switch to the console where you can kill urxvt and un-freeze
X11.

First a resource dump.

Corresponding Ubuntu bug.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/archlinux/+source/rxvt-unicode/+bug/317366

rxvt-unicode ml threads (2 threads; links to first posts)
http://lists.schmorp.de/pipermail/rxvt-unicode/2009q3/001035.html
http://lists.schmorp.de/pipermail/rxvt-unicode/2009q3/001042.html

According to urxvt ml thread this is an xorg bug. Ubuntu applied the patch
from the second ml thread listed above, but upstream decided against it as
it was an xorg bug. They considered a compile time option for the
workaround but decided it 'broke' things and didn't belong in the urxvt
codebase.

The dev I spoke to on irc (schmorp) said he thought it was a decent enough
temporary workaround as long as it was removed once the xorg bug was
fixed. So I have attached the patch to this as a possible fix.

If you're looking to just prevent the hang you can disable the popup menus
via an .Xresources tweak.

Bug#517976: significantly more cpu usage on armel than before

2009-03-12 Thread John Eikenberry
 dmix forces everybody to play at 48kHz. So, yes, that's possible.

You can control this in your .asoundrc using the rate parameter. I have it
set to 44100 in mine so that it doesn't have to re-sample my music. I
included a simple example below.

I also set the period_size size in the example. I found that setting it to
2048 totally eliminated the pops and crackles when listening to online
radio.

pcm.card0 {
type hw
card 0
}

ctl.card0 {
type hw
card 0
}

pcm.mix {
type dmix
ipc_key 1234
slave {
pcm card0
period_size 2048
rate 44100
}
}

pcm.!default mix

Bug#517631: djbdns misformats some long response packets

2009-02-28 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: djbdns
Version: 1.05
Severity: normal

http://www.securityfocus.com/archive/1/501294/30/

This posting explains and provides a patch for a security vulnerability in
tinydns and axfrdns. It is a rare case but the patch seems trivial enough.
The posting explains it better than I can sum it up, so please refer to it.

Thanks.

Bug#510518: mercurial/ikiwiki-makerepo: bad hg add call

2009-01-02 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: ikiwiki
Version: 3.00
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

Running the setup results in this...

$ ikiwiki -setup /etc/ikiwiki/auto.setup

What revision control system to use? mercurial
What wiki user (or openid) will be wiki admin? jae

Setting up wiki ...
Importing /home/jae/wiki into mercurial
* does not exist!
/etc/ikiwiki/auto.setup: failed to set up the repository with ikiwiki-makerepo

usage: ikiwiki [options] source dest
   ikiwiki --setup configfile

--

The problem is the hg add call in the ikiwiki-makerepo script.

hg add * .hgignore

It seems hg (mercurial) doesn't like the * when there are no files present.
hg works on all files by default, so it seems like just leaving the arguments
off the command would eliminate the error and do the same thing.

It is a simple change but I went ahead and attached a patch for the added
clarification.

Bug#502790: apticron: Error with heirloom-mailx

2008-10-19 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: apticron
Version: 1.1.25
Severity: important

apticron depends on mailx which can be provided by multiple packages, including
heirloom-mailx. But it is incompatible with heirloom-mailx in its current form
and running apticron generates this error from mailx.

Content-type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8: No such file or directory

This is from line 240...

   ) 21 | /usr/bin/mailx -a Content-type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 -s
$DISTRIB_ID package updates on $SYSTEM $EMAIL

heirloom-mailx uses -a for attachments where here it is using the bsd-mailx
syntax, where -a means to add a header.

The workaround is to use bsd-mailx. I didn't test with mailutils, so it might
work as well.

Bug#484830: possible workaround

2008-08-31 Thread John Eikenberry

I also was experiencing this when using xcompmgr with the '-c' option in
combination with rxvt-unicode using its RGBA transparency mode. I only get
this problem when using the '-c' option.

After some experimentation what finally fixed it for me was to add the '-f'
option to the xcompmgr call. It seems something about -f fixes the -c
issue.

Hope this helps.

Bug#432320: nvidia-graphics-modules-i386 - missing updates for 2.6.21

2.6.22 has been in unstable for a few weeks now. Any progress?

Bug#256602: Feature probably added upstream

2007-08-06 Thread John Eikenberry

Upstream bug has been closed as FIXED. The dev noted that the theming
system has been reworked and she thinks this feature (or a close facsimile)
was included. Though she admits she wasn't entirely sure exactly what was
being requested.

See the upstream bug entry for details.

Bug#412434: Long label segfault fix

2007-05-12 Thread John Eikenberry

I submitted this patch to bug #301563 but it hasn't been applied yet. That
may not have been the correct place to submit the bug as it was against an
older package (python2.3-gdchart2).

Anyways, the patch is attached.

Bug#301563: Fixed. python2.3-gdchart2: Segfault with names longer than 8 chars

2006-11-06 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: python2.3-gdchart2
Version: 0.beta1-3ubuntu1
Followup-For: Bug #301563

Using Ubuntu currently, so this was actually fixed and tested on that
system. But it is still debian so...

I tested this fix with both python2.3 and python2.4. It was a classic
mistake of using '=' instead of '==' in a conditional. Unified diff
attached that fixes the issue.

Bug#358446: python-gdchart2: Error with lookup options

2006-03-22 Thread John Eikenberry
Package: python-gdchart2
Version: 0.beta1-3
Severity: normal
Tags: patch

When processing a lookup value (eg. percent_labels) in getOption() it only
processes the first option as the 'else:' clause is paired with the wrong
block. It is paired with an 'if' instead of the 'for' loop.

Reproducable with the code below. Note the loop is over a dict.items() so
it is unordered. If the RIGHT option does't cause the error try another;
ABOVE, BELOW, LEFT, or NONE.

myPie.setLabels([One, Two, Three, Four, Five])

This is a problem with Python-Xlib. Under certain conditions, the receive
buffer size isn't large enough. To fix it, open the following file -

/usr/lib/pythonversion/site-packages/Xlib/protocol/display.py

and change line 530 from -

recv = self.socket.recv(2048)

to -

recv = self.socket.recv(4096)

4096 should be large enough ..

This fixed the problem I was having. I have included a patch doing just
this.
