Bug#1070313: firmware-amd-graphics: current versions in stable, testing, and sid do not allow RX7800XT usage

2024-05-03 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: firmware-amd-graphics
Version: 20230210-5
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

The current versions of this packages, be it in stable (20230210-5), testing
(20230625-2)
or sid (20230625-2) prevent RX7800XT GPUs to be used with Debian.

The latest version (20240410) allows RX7800XT GPUs to work properly in stable,
testing, and sid,
please consider packaging a newer version of firmware.

Bug#1040199: linux-image-6.3.0-1-amd64: kernel panic during boot

2023-07-03 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: src:linux
Version: 6.3.7-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Dear Maintainer,

Tracking sid, after upgrading from 6.1.0-9-amd64 to 6.3.0-1-amd64 (6.3.7-1), I
experienced a kernel panic during boot.

Here is its trace:

```
AFAIK, there is not other reports of this, and I was wondering if it could be
due to the fact that this is an "old"
installation.
FWIW, since this is something that I saw when people were trying/using UEFI, I
thought I should mention that my drives
are still using MBR partitions, and so, boot in BIOS is configured as CSM.
Hope that helps,
JB
Bug#1036964: igc: speed auto-negociation fails to set it to max with NIC I225-V on gigabit network
2023-05-30 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: linux-image-amd64-6.3.4
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: julienbenja...@free.fr
Dear Maintainer,
   * What led up to the situation?
I installed Debian on a Minisforum UM450 using a 2.5G NIC (Intel I225-V).
Speed autonegociation sometimes set the speed to 1Gbps (on a gigabit network),
but more often than not it is set to 100Mbps.
It sometimes oscillates between 100 and 1000, but, most of the time, the speed
is 100Mbps.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
I tried the kernel version in experimental (6.3.4). It was the same as the one
for current bookworm/sid (6.1.27).
I tried to change the cable and switch.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
The same behavior.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Since the I225-V is supposed to work on gigabit networks, whatever the kernel
version, I expected it to work OOTB.
Bug#1033207: vlc : HDR to SDR tone mapping does not work
2023-03-19 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: vlc
Version: 3.0.18-2
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
   * What led up to the situation?
Using VLC with HDR content.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Using VLC for HDR content playback does not work properly ; on the other hand,
MPV does work properly.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
Content is not displayed properly in VLC.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
Same as with MPV.
VLC was used in software decoding mode.
>From what I could gather on official VLC channels, it could be due to a
>problem in the build with libplacebo.
Cheers,
JB
Bug#962071: gnome: "blank screen" feature does not work
2020-06-02 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: gnome
Version: 1:3.30+1
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
With the current (stable) version of the GNOME environment, the power saving
feature "blank screen"
does not work as intended.
Indeed, after fading out to black, the monitor is still active and displays the
mouse cursor
and a black screen.
Best regards,
JB
Bug#947077: chromium: multiple windows restored stacked instead of their original positions
2019-12-20 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: chromium
Version: 78.0.3904.108-1~deb10u1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***
 * What led up to the situation?
I updated Chromium to latest version available on Debian Buster Stable
i.e. 78.0.3904.108-1~deb10u1.
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
  ineffective)?
When Chromium is killed unexpectedly, such as when I switch off my machine
without closing
first, I have the option to restore the windows and tabs previously open, which
I use
everyday.
* What was the outcome of this action?
Some windows appears with a different shape/size, behind others, on others
screens, etc.
Basically, it does not restore exactly the windows like they were before,
contrary to what
this function used to do before. Some windows are unaffected, some are always
affected.
* What outcome did you expect instead?
I expected that the "restore" feature behaves like before i.e. keeping track of
windows
positions, size and shapes, as well as, open tabs.
Cheers,
JB
Bug#942890: openssh-server: daemon slow to start
2019-10-22 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: openssh-server
Version: 1:7.9p1-10+deb10u1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
After a fresh installation of Debian Buster stable on a HP Proliant Microserver
Gen8,
I found out that the ssh daemon was slow to start after a (re)boot.
It manifests by the fact that the connection is refused by the server.
I could take several minutes for the daemon to start and that I can connect to
the server.
Actually, it is always the slowest process to start ; when using systemd-analyze
blame to monitor it, I discovered it was taken at least 60s.
I think it might be a problem with minimal entropy needed; indeed, when I
connect a keyboard to
the machine and typing random characters without login in, the daemon would
start after 10-20
characters typed.
For the record, the OS is installed on an SSD.
Regards,
JB
Bug#940580: gnome: drop-down notifications cannot be disabled in settings
2019-09-17 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: gnome
Version: 1:3.30+1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
* What led up to the situation?
Whatever the application (even exclusive full-screen applications), a drop-down
notifications is always displayed and does not disappear until you hover/click
on the notifications (which can lead some applications to crash).
This behaviour has been disabled in the settings and seemed to be not enforced.
It appears to be the same in dconf: the path is
"org.gnome.desktop.notifications"
and the item is "shows-banners".
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
  ineffective)?
I tried disabling through the "Settings" menu, or through dconf-editor, to
avoid the drop-down notifications to make some on my exclusive full-screen apps.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
The notifications/banners keep appearing, even the setting set to off.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
I was expecting not to see any drop-down notifications/banners anymore after
having set its setting to off.
Furthermore, I would expect, whatever if the setting is set to on or off,
that the notifications would not appear above exclusive full-screen
applications.
Regards,
JB
Bug#939941: nvidia-driver: "display engine hung" error at boot with gdm background frozen
2019-09-10 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: nvidia-driver
Version: 418.74-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system
Dear Maintainer,
   * What led up to the situation?
I tried to boot up my machine and ended up having the X server frozen on the
background of gdm.
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
I tried to reboot.
   * What was the outcome of this action?
It did not work.
   * What outcome did you expect instead?
To be able to reach the login screen of gdm.
I switch to tty2 to try to see the logs and happened to see there was an
error, apparently between the X server and the Nvidia proprietary driver.
This problem flooded the ttys with this error on the standard output of
each tty (do not know why).
I will send more details from a different machine after submitting this bug.
Cheers,
JB
Bug#939471: gnome-control-center: Cracking sound emitted by speakers when opening the "Sound" panel (on the "Output" tab)
2019-09-05 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: gnome-control-center
Version: 1:3.30.3-1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
Recently (a few weeks), I have been using for small periods of time my speakers
(the speakers being connected to the chipset built-in audio, the headphones on
the DAC).
Since then, whenever I open the sound panel of the gnome-settings-center, I can
hear
a cracking sound being emitted by my speakers.
* What led up to the situation?
I could not know for sure, since I have been using an external DAC instead of
the built-in audio and headphones
instead of speakers since years.
Recently (a few weeks), I have been using for small periods of time my speakers
(the speakers being connected to the chipset built-in audio, the headphones on
the DAC).
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
Nothing. Everytime the gnome-settings-center is opened for the first time
between reboots,
on the sound panel, I can hear a cracking sound on the speakers. I do not think
it matters if
it is the selected output but I am not sure.
* What outcome did you expect?
I was (naively?) just expecting to have the sound panel of the
gnome-settings-center being open
without having to hear any sound on any of the output. The only one behaving
strangely is the
built-in audio, connected to the speakers.
* More info:
I targeted this package as being responsible for this issue since it does not
happen to have
an obvious potential guilty package (did not see much in the dependancies
regarding
pulseaudio/alsa), so feel free to redirect my bug reported to whatever package
is responsible
for this bug.
Cheers,
JB
Bug#932879: gnome: Not able to choose proper formats in "Region & Language" settings GUI
2019-07-23 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: gnome
Version: 1:3.30+1
Severity: important
Dear Maintainer,
   * What led up to the situation?
After an upgrade from Strech, I found out that I was unable to choose my
formats (measurements, paper type, date format) when using the locale
en_US.UTF-8.
* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?
I upgraded from Strech following the usual method (Debian wiki/manual). The
settings were overidden during the upgrade, as far as I understand.
* What was the outcome of this action?
It changed my formats settings and I am unable to change it from the dedicated
settings GUI. I did not try to force it in CLI though.
* What outcome did you expect instead?
I was expecting to be able to e.g. change the paper type to A4 or change the
date format, or even switch from imperial measurements to International System
of Units.
Best,
JB
Bug#927401: linux-image-4.9.0-8-amd64: fails to recognize properly every time the same sound device
2019-04-18 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: src:linux
Version: 4.9.144-3.1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
I am using a HiFimeDIY UAE23 USB DAC (ESS Sabre ES9023+Savitech SA9023) as the
default sound output.
This device is using the driver "snd-usb-audio".
When I boot the system, it may or may not recognize the device properly,
leading to have no sound anymore played on this output.
I set the device as default sink, using `pacmd set-default-sink 0`, where the
pulseaudio index 0 is the USB DAC.
But when the machine boots with the device being in a bad state, the device
name, vendor id and model id values change (while the id vendor id does not).
Unplugging and plugging it back solves the issue, because the device name,
vendor id and model id values change back to proper ones.
I could provide a lot of outputs messages, but I tried to provide only the most
relevant ones, let me know if you need more details.
Here is what `udevadm info` gives for both cases:
Bug#927400: reportbug: fails to compare package versions
2019-04-18 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: reportbug
Version: 7.1.7+deb9u2
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
I wanted to report a bug regarding the kernel version and reportbug says my
up-to-date stable kernel version is newer than the last version.
Here is the reportbug output:
  Getting status for linux-image-4.9.0-8-amd64...
  Checking for newer versions at madison...
  Your version of linux-image-4.9.0-8-amd64 (4.9.144-3.1) is newer than that in
Debian!
I wanted to list the installed package:
$ dpkg -l | grep linux-image
ii  linux-image-4.9.0-8-amd64 4.9.144-3.1
  amd64Linux 4.9 for 64-bit PCs
ii  linux-image-amd64 4.9+80+deb9u6
  amd64Linux for 64-bit PCs (meta-package)
I might be wrong but it seems that there is a bug, if not in reportbug,
somewhere else (dpkg?).
Best regards,
JB
Bug#927365: /usr/bin/lsusb: lsusb: Hardware database out of date
2019-04-18 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: usbutils
Version: 1:007-4+b1
Severity: important
File: /usr/bin/lsusb
Dear Maintainer,
I stumbled into `/usr/share/hwdata/usb.ids`, looking to see why some of my USB
devices where not recognized,
even though being not particulary recent. I was really surprised to that the
hardware information were
from mid-2015 (roughly 2 years before Debian 9 was released!) and that they had
not been updated since.
I ran `update-usbids` and I saw that the information were dated from last March.
IMHO, these information should be updated automatically.
Best regards,
JB
Bug#927318: nvidia-settings: refresh rate setting is not saved
2019-04-17 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: nvidia-settings
Version: 390.87-1~deb9u1
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
I am using a dual screen of Asus VG248QE, which can handle refresh rates up to
144Hz.
When using nvidia-settings or xrandr, the refresh rate is not saved.
It appears that it is not saved in .nvidia-settings-rc.
Every reboot, the refresh rate comes back to 60Hz.
Apart from this, the nvidia-settings GUI indicates that resolutions and refresh
rates for both monitors
are set to "Auto" after each reboot.
Hope that I have been clear enough, do not hesitate to ask me for more details.
Best regards,
JB
Bug#927317: gnome: wallpaper is displayed only after a few seconds after login
2019-04-17 Thread Julien-Benjamin
Package: gnome
Version: 1:3.22+3
Severity: normal
Dear Maintainer,
* What led up to the situation?
After login in with GDM, instead of having the wallapper being displayed
a very bright solid white color is.
(Very painful when working in the dark and/or when you have eye-sensitive
conditions)
The wallpaper is however being displayed after a few seconds.
I did not know which package to target for this issue, this
is why I filed this bug for the metapackage.
Do not hesitate to ask me for more details and giving me directions,
I would be happy to provide more details if I know where and what to look for.
Best regards,
JB
