I am about to fix in im-config package side. (Since im-switch is not used for ibus now, I do not know use of this as is but if we make changes as below, it is useful for wheezy.) Ah; in Ubuntu, im-switch is used by default instead of im-config. I don't know why this is, I would have to dig into the package history to see. If only one of ibus-gtk or ibus-gtk3 is installed, I don't know what the desired behavior would be here, but I think we should fall back to xim in that case because it's safer. This is very deep question. But practically thinking, control file needs update to fix this problem: Now we have: Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, ${python:Depends}, python-ibus (= ${source:Version}), python-xdg, librsvg2-common, python-notify, im-config Recommends: ibus-gtk | ibus-qt4 | ibus-clutter Conflicts: ibus-anthy ( 1.2), ibus-table ( 1.2), ibus-pinyin ( 1.2.99), ibus-m17n ( 1.2.99), ibus-hangul ( 1.2.99), ibus-chewing ( 1.2.99) I think correct thing to do is: Depends: ${shlibs:Depends}, ${misc:Depends}, ${python:Depends}, python-ibus (= ${source:Version}), python-xdg, librsvg2-common, python-notify Recommends: ibus-gtk3, ibus-gtk, ibus-qt4, ibus-clutter, im-config Conflicts: ibus-anthy ( 1.2), ibus-table ( 1.2), ibus-pinyin ( 1.2.99), ibus-m17n ( 1.2.99), ibus-hangul ( 1.2.99), ibus-chewing ( 1.2.99) So they all get installed as defualt, if admin choses not to do so, he should deal with it. That makes sense to me. In this case, users are very probably getting both IM Modules installed at the same time, so they can avoid weird misbehavior of installing only one of the two. Is having dependency loop OK for recommend? I think this is bad idea. See the circular dependency loop in recent policy: Yes, circular recommends are allowed. It's even allowed for p1 to depend on p2 while p2 recommends p1. The restriction on circular dependencies is because the package manager doesn't know which order to configure the packages. But a Recommends does not affect package configuration. Cheers, -- Steve Langasek Give me a lever long enough and a Free OS Debian Developer to set it on, and I can move the world. Not sure it is the right method to solve this problem, but if someone decide to work on it, i'd be joyful to help testing (and sponsoring if needed). If you need to test versions from the upstream VCS, or patches, tell me. we will package ibus-xkbc in this week. but we will focus on released version: 1.2.0.20100115 http://github.com/sun-im/ibus-xkbc/downloads thanks. -- Best Regards LI Daobing -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. [1] http://wiki.debian.org/Teams/PythonModulesTeam Thanks! Wen, now that you've adopted pytables (without even daring to reply to the above email), can you fix #547875 ? It's important to have this fixed to let Python 2.6 be uploaded in Debian. It's a very easy bug and I would have expected to see fixed in the adoption upload. I will try to fix it. Li, since you sponsored the upload, please check the package bugs (along with every other pkg info) to see if some easy important bugs Li had done these but I am new to debian package so I told him I shall fix the bug when I am familiar with Debian package system. I don't care: you must be able to maintain a package, and if you're not, then you shouldn't ask to sponsor that package. Li, *do not* sponsor people not able to actually maintain a packge: it's not helpful, and coming from the same part of the world should not be an excuse to reduce the quality of Debian. after the adoption, things become better, not worse, so take it easy. I have checked the package prepared by wenheping, it fulfill my rules: 1. has a watch file 2. lintian clean 3. good document in debian/changelog 4. correct debian/copyright. so I upload it. And I don't think wenheping is not a qualified debian package maintainer. and last question, why wenheping ask me sponsor this package? just because we live in the same timezone, so we have much more common time on the IRC. Don't think too much on this, :) We powered Debian, We are improving the quality of Debian, not reducing. Wen, fix that bug or I'll upload the package as a QA upload, removing you from the maintainer field, since you have admitted you can't maintain it as it should. as in the NMU rule, give the maintainer one or two week will be better, and it's not a critical bug, so take it easy (again). -- Best Regards LI Daobing -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#498260: Can scim-python-pinyin follow the packaging approach of ibus-pinyin
On Sun, May 31, 2009 at 21:05, Hongzheng Wang wan...@gmail.com wrote: Dear Daobing, I'm sorry for disturbing you by raising the old bug report again. First of all, I would like to thank you for the contribution in packaging both scim-python and ibus (and of course other packages). I like ibus so much and hope this new input method framework can successfully replace scim eventually given that the development of scim in upstream has been stopped in fact. When I look at the solution provided by you in packaging ibus-pinyin, I believe it is a really smart one to solve the ``having to download database during building'' problem. Furthermore, I wonder if scim-python-pinyin can be created following the same approach. After all, ibus-pinyin and scim-python-pinyin use the same database in fact (please correct me if I'm wrong). Well, I admit that scim-python has been stopped in upstream. I think it might be better to have a more complete ``workable'' scim-python because scim-python still exists in Debian. tegaki is in the debian ftp new, which is a handwriting input method and depends on scim-python. (which can make scim-python useful). I don't want to package scim-python-pinyin, which is deprecated by upstream. -- Best Regards LI Daobing -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. On Sun, May 3, 2009 at 18:33, Paul Gevers p...@climbing.nl wrote: This is a big package with a high popcon count, do you have the time for such a large task? On your own? Is there any upstream activity? I have the intention to try. And of course all help is appreciated, but I would say that any improvement over inactivity is good. I really think this cleaning up could solve a lot of bugs and annoyance to users. And, no, there is hardly upstream activity. The last couple of years only some rare patches got applied. The PTS claims 85 lintian errors and warnings, so that is a considerable advance. The spelling error appears trivial and the autotools ones are new, there was an announcement about those on debian-devel regarding problems with new architectures (and, for that matter cross-building) when these files are so out of date. autoreconf will sort those out - you could try it in debian/rules but be aware that updating such an old package could cause new bugs so it might be best to do the entire refresh thing upstream. Those aren't particularly suitable library names, so you may want to use a lintian override for now and use a more sensible name in a future upstream release - again, a large step for a package of this size. Except for an override for the package-name-doesnt-match-sonames (with reference to the above statement) the package is now appears completely lintian clean: (pbuild17332) etna lesstif2-0.95.0 # lintian --allow-root -I -E --pedantic ../*.changes N: 1 tag overridden (1 warning) (pbuild17332) etna lesstif2-0.95.0 # lintian --allow-root -I -E --pedantic ../*.deb N: 1 tag overridden (1 warning) Michael Biebl wrote: A less invasive approach is, to build-depend on autotools-dev and copy config.(guess, sub) from there. If you backup the exisisting files, you can easily copy them back on clean to return to a pristine state. I fixed the outdated-autotools-helper-file by using the approach proposed by Mickael. (No need to back them up, just removing them on clean). There needs to be a quick, easy way of testing the package - is there a script or internal program that can be run or a simple way of writing a test program? What needs to be done to run stuff in the test/ directory? It doesn't use 'make check' (which appears to do nothing in particular). Running the tests in the package can be done by running using --enable-build-tests on configure time. Then in the test/Xm or test/Xm-2.1 dir running the testall command. Apparently, a lot of these test have failed for a long time (nobody cared?). To compare, I did the tests (except for printing, where I needed a patch to build anyway) for a build of lesstif2-0.95-2.1 lesstif2-0.95-2.1ubuntu1 and lesstif2-0.95-2.3. The results: 2.1: 350 failed out of 609 2.1ubuntu1: 350 failed out of 609 (although two test results swapped with 2.1) 2.3 351 failed out of 609 I will look into this further, but still, this upload would fix a lot of standing bugs. Bug#525136: [python-support] generate an uninstallable package
2009/4/22 Josselin Mouette j...@debian.org: Le mercredi 22 avril 2009 à 20:14 +0800, LI Daobing a écrit : the arch-any package python-zinnia only provide python2.4-zinnia and python2.5-zinnia, but the arch-all package python-tegaki depends on python2.6- zinnia, so python-tegaki is not installable. There’s no easy way around this. It is not possible to know, while building python-tegaki, that python-zinnia is only available for 2.4 and 2.5. The built python-tegaki package actually works with 2.6, so it adds 2.6 to the list of supported versions – but to work with 2.6, it needs to depend on python2.6-zinnia. However, I think that you are abusing Provides: to come to this result. If no package depends on a specific pythonX.Y-tegaki, you should not add the “Provides: ${python:Provides}” field, and therefore you should not use Python-Depends either. The same goes for python-zinnia, for which the Provides is likely unnecessary. got it, thanks. you can close this bug. -- Best Regards LI Daobing signature.asc Description: OpenPGP digital signature

Hello, sorry for the too late reply, but later is better than never, right? the original bug report is: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=424841 I want to push your 8 files to upstream, but because it is over 10 lines, so we must make clear the copyright and license information of your patch. can you give me the copyright and license information of these files? Bug#498260: Pinyin module unavailable
my 2cent: scim-python is (somehow) orphaned by upstream author, he is working on a similar project named ibus: http://code.google.com/p/ibus/ On Fri, Mar 27, 2009 at 02:44, Samuel Thibault samuel.thiba...@ens-lyon.org wrote: Deng Xiyue, le Mon 08 Sep 2008 22:33:35 +0800, a écrit : It is known that the building of pinyin module will result in downloading a word db which might be problematic to license issue, There are two problems: - a license problem indeed: under which license py.db is distributed? Nothing tells in the tarball, so we can't know. - py.db can not be considered as the form that permits easy modifications, so it must be rebuilt during the Debian package compilation. There actually _is_ a script for that: python/engine/PinYin/PYCreatePinYinDB.py. Problem is: the phrase files are missing, and I can't find them in the svn either. These files may pose license issues, which would actually be transmitted by the very fact of downloading py.db... So as of the current state of the upstream tarball, enabling the Pinyin module is not an option if we want to distribute scim-python in main. Else it has to go to non-free. I guess next step would be to contact upstream to know what the state of these phrase files is. but it's better to have a switch to disable building this wordlist instead of creating an eunuch ;) I'm not sure to understand what you mean. If you want, you can build the package yourself after having dropped the --disable-pinyin option from debian/rules. But that'll build a non-dfsg free package.
