An update to ca-certificates was released on January 23, 2016 and I noticed
that the install was being held up. I was using Synaptic so I clicked on the
"Details" twisty to see if there were any error messages in the terminal. There
was a message informing me that certain certificates had been removed. I
recognized the colon as a prompt so I just typed q. That was sufficient and the
install finished with no errors. There was no propmpt to the user so the
install was just just waiting for acknowledgement.

Bug#809856: iceweasel: Iceweasel locked up and got corrupted

2016-01-04 Thread Len Huppe

Introduction

Please forgive me for this long writeup. I suggest that you grab a cup of
coffee and get comfortable. A lot happened today and I want to convey all of it
to you while it is still fresh in my mind. I am hoping to answer some of your
questions here so that you have no need to ask me later. In short, Iceweasel
locked up and got corrupted. Here goes:

Problem

It all began when I noticed that my weather extension for Gnome Shell was not
working. It was then that I determined I had lost the Internet. I tried to use
Iceweasel to log into my wireless access point but I was unable to get any
network connection. When I tried to exit Iceweasel the window closed only to
reveal a duplicate. I say duplicate because it had the same tabs open. When I
tried to close that window I got no response. I ended up using the Processes
tab of the System Monitor app to terminate the process. I then rebooted. My
network connection was down so I tried using the Network control panel to
connect with no success. I power cycled my access point and by the time I got
back to my desktop it had already connected.

The first thing I tried was to use Iceweasel to visit the Gnome Shell
Extensions page where I could delete the weather extension and reinstall it. I
was able to delete it but I was unable to install it again. Normally when I
install an extension I get a popup window with two choices - Cancel or Install.
In this case I did not get the popup window, and the extension did not install.
I tried looking in /var/log for a log file but found none. I then searched
through my ~/.mozilla directory tree for a log file. Again I was unsuccessful.

Action Taken

I tried adding a guest account and logging into that account. When I launched
Iceweasel it came cleanly. After completing an initial setup I once again
navigated to the Gnome Shell extensions website. This time I was able to add
and remove extensions. After logging back into my own user account I archived
my ~/.mozilla directory tree before deleting it. When I launched Iceweasel it
came up cleanly. I had to completely reconfigure Iceweasel as a new install,
but I am now running again with no known issues.

Conclusion

I do not know if there was any cause and effect relationship between the issues
I had with Iceweasel and my wireless access point going down. If you are
interested in doing a post-mortem of my ~/.mozilla directory tree I can provide
you with a copy of the archive I created. If I can be of any assistance please
do not hesitate to contact me. I am at your disposal.

Title

Icons in the Search Box drop-down are too small.

Problem

The icons in the Search Box drop-down are very small, even smaller than the
Toolbar icons. I do not have the best vision and on bad days the poor
resolution on these icons makes them difficult to identify. Someone with vision
impairment may have much greater difficulty. Also, when there are multiple
icons from the same domain it gets confusing. For example I have two virtually
identical icons for the Debian website. One is for “Debian packages” and
the other is for “Debian website (en).”

Action Taken

On bad days I get closer to the screen to identify the icons. In the case of
identical icons I do a mouseover to see the name of the icon displayed in the
“Search for … with:” bar of the drop-down menu.

Current Behavior

Typing in the Search Box activates the drop-down menu which displays a
combination of text messages and icons. The icons are displayed in a grid
layout without any text to identify them.

Suggested Behavior

Short Term: Add a text identifier and make the icons larger and easier to make
out. I consider the add-on Google App Launcher by Mahesh Asolkar to be a good
example of icons well done.

Long Term: Perhaps it is time to add a Search Box tab to the Preferences page
where the user can customize various behaviors of the Search Bar. For example,
icon display or list display. Same tab or a new tab. etc.

Bug#808960: iceweasel: Script blockers intefere with Services

2015-12-24 Thread Len Huppe
Package: iceweasel
Version: 43.0.1-1~bpo80+1
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

*** End of the template - remove these template lines ***

Problem

If a script blocker is blocking a web site because the user has not granted
access, Services will be unable to connect to that web site until access is
granted by the user.

Action Taken

Configured my script blocker (NoScript) to allow access to each web site before
attempting to setup Services.

Current Behavior

If NoScript is blocking a site, and the user clicks on the Services button in
the Toolbar, the Services popup window appears with an error message stating:

Iceweasel is unable to
connect with
http:// . . . linkedin . . .
right now

Suggested Behavior

Is it possible to check for the presence of a script blocker and advise the
user to check and see if the requested site is being blocked?

If not then the user can still be advised that a script or other blocker may be
denying access . . .

Bug#808959: iceweasel: Add Services to Sync

2015-12-24 Thread Len Huppe
Package: iceweasel
Version: 43.0.1-1~bpo80+1
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

*** End of the template - remove these template lines ***

Problem

The Sync feature does not currently sync installed services. Therefore when
setting up a new installation the user must install and/or re-install desired
services.

Action Taken

Openned the Add-ons Manager > Services tab to re-install services manually.

Current Behavior

There is a message stating “You don’t have any add-ons of this type
installed.” Also, there is a button labeled “Learn more about add-
ons.” Clicking that button brings the user to the Get Add-ons tab which does
not say much about services.

Suggested Behavior

Would it be better to have the button labeled “Learn more about Services”
and have that button take the user to the web site where Services can be
installed?

https://activations.cdn.mozilla.net/en-US/

In the long run Services will very likely be added to the Sync service in which
case re-installations will become that much easier. In the meantime, this
suggested change can make the process of installing services a bit quicker and
easier. More importantly, it can help make the transition to Iceweasel from
other browsers a bit easier for newbies.

Bug#808966: iceweasel: Please add the ability to set Bookmarks Sidebar behaviors in a Preferences tab

Request

Please add the ability to set Bookmarks Sidebar behaviors in a Preferences tab

Problem

Navigating to a bookmarked site in a new tab requires two steps that can be
eliminated:

Step 1 - open sidebar
Step 2 - find link
Step 3 - right-click on link
Step 4 - select open in new tab
Step 5 - close sidebar

Action Taken

I have installed an add-on called “Open Bookmarks in New Tab” that opens a
bookmark in a new tab. Then when I am working I type ctrl-b with one hand
before clicking on the link I want and then closing the sidebar by either
typing ctrl-b again or clicking on the close button.

Current Behavior

The current configuration requires that I install yet another add-on and take
five separate steps.

Suggested Behavior

Give the user the ability to set the sidebar’s behavior so it opens a
bookmark in a new tab before closing. Then the task could be completed in only
three steps. Further, it would eliminate the need to install an add-on. The
required steps would then be:

Step 1 - open sidebar
Step 2 - find link
Step 3 - click on link

Bug#808965: iceweasel: Please add a menu option to open the bookmarks sidebar when the user right-clicks

2015-12-24 Thread Len Huppe
Package: iceweasel
Version: 43.0.1-1~bpo80+1
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?

Problem

Typing ctrl-b does not open the bookmarks sidebar If I am writing a Google Doc
or viewing a Doc that I have edit access to. I cannot change “focus” in any
way that I know of so that typing ctrl-b will open the bookmarks sidebar.

Action Taken

All I have come up with is to click on the bookmarks button in the toolbar and
select “View Bookmarks Sidebar.”

Current Behavior

In that context typing ctrl-b will only turn the bold font on and off.

Suggested Behavior

My idea is to implement a menu option to open the sidebar when the user right-
clicks.

The OpenH264 plugin is not included in IceWeasel but the option to enable it
appears under Add-ons > Plugins. This could be confusing to some users. I have
not figured out a way to "remove" it.

Bug#776403: nautilus: Nuatilus needs a status bar and/or status panel outside of the main window

2015-01-27 Thread Len Huppe
Package: nautilus
Version: 3.14.1-2
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

I recently completed a project that required extensive use of the Nautilus file
manager app. I have noticed a minor albeit annoying bug. Here is some food for
thought:

The main window has a popup that appears with contextual information. While
this is a good thing for many users, the popup sometimes covers up the contents
of the main window. Quite honestly, this is very annoying at times. The Ubuntu
version of nautilus had a status bar that sat below the main window, and that
kept the popup from hiding any of the contents of the main window. Another
option would be to have the popup appear at the bottom of the side panel since
that area is often open (at least in my case it is).

Thank you for all that you do.

Your friend,

Len Huppe

Bug#775949: rhythmbox: Rhytmbox crashes when replay gain plugin is enabled

2015-01-21 Thread Len Huppe
Package: rhythmbox
Version: 3.1-1
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I recently used Ex Falso to add replay gain tags to my music collection which
is comprised of Flac and MP3 files. After enabling the replay gain plugin to
Rhythmbox it began to lock up. I tried launching the app from a terminal and
this is what was reported when it crashed:

(rhythmbox:10988): GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_segment_to_stream_time: assertion
'segment-format == format' failed
sys:1: Warning: g_str_has_prefix: assertion 'str != NULL' failed

At that point I had to do a forced quit to get running again. As a test I
disabled the replay gain plugin and tried playing the same files. As of this
writing Rhythmbox is running ok.

Debian Jessie Beta 2
Ex Falso version 3.2.2
Rhtythmbox version 3.1
libgstreamer1.0-0 version 1.4.4-2

Please let me know if I can be of assistance.

Your Friend,

Len Huppe
