link) that this is a known bug in cinnamon 2.2:
You're still on Cinnamon 2.2 it looks like - this particular freeze has

You can work around this bug by setting the x-session-manager manually.
For e.g. xfce4 you would do:
|update-alternatives --set x-session-manager /usr/bin/xfce4-session|

But if you do a
