I think this is an especially unwisely chosen default, as others have written, it is not a problem for actual personal user accounts, but for root accounts on yet unconfigured Debian boxes. Would it be possible to ship an empty .vimrc for root and the first account created during setup, e.g. by inserting an empty .vimrc into /etc/skel? Even in situations where Boxes are hooked up to Ansible or another configuration management system, vim is the one software I need to work right away without annoying me ;) Thanks for considering, /ralph

Bug#767989: hylafax-client: sendfax should cope with UTF-8 by default
Package: hylafax-client Version: 3:6.0.6-5 Severity: minor You describe how to send UTF-8 in README.Debian. I really think this should be the default, if the dependencies are not too heavy, as most systems have UTF-8 as a default encoding by now. This might be less of a problem in some locales, but e.g. almost every German text makes the sendfax program trip. For German the text filter is of very little use in practice. If this is not possible, a more descriptive error message would be good, the current foo: Can not determine file type is not all too helpful. -- System Information: Debian Release: jessie/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (500, 'testing') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 3.16-3-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=en_GB.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages hylafax-client depends on: ii enscript1.6.5.90-2 ii ghostscript 9.06~dfsg-1.1+b1 ii gsfonts 1:8.11+urwcyr1.0.7~pre44-4.2 ii libc6 2.19-12 ii libgcc1 1:4.9.1-19 ii libjbig02.1-3.1 ii libpaper-utils 1.1.24+nmu3 ii libstdc++6 4.9.1-19 ii libtiff54.0.3-10+b2 ii ucf 3.0030 ii zlib1g 1:1.2.8.dfsg-2 Versions of packages hylafax-client recommends: ii netpbm2:10.0-15.1+b1 ii transfig 1:3.2.5.e-4 Versions of packages hylafax-client suggests: pn mgetty-viewfax none -- Configuration Files: /etc/hylafax/hyla.conf changed: Host: localhost Verbose:No TimeZone: local DialRules: /etc/hylafax/dialrules FontMap: /var/lib/defoma/gs.d/dirs/fonts:/usr/share/ghostscript/8.71/Resource/Init:/usr/share/ghostscript/8.62/lib:/usr/share/gs-afpl/8.53/lib:/usr/share/gs-esp/8.15/lib:/usr/share/ghostscript/9.06/Resource/Init/ FontPath: /usr/share/fonts/type1/gsfonts /etc/hylafax/typerules changed: 0 string %! ps 0 short 0x4d4d tiff 0 short 0x4949 tiff 0 short 000732 error Cannot convert from SGI on Linux 0 short 017436 error packed data support not configured 0 short 017635 error compressed data support not configured 0 short 0x0506 ps showcase -p -f %i 0 short 0x5343 ps showcase -p -f %i 0 short 0xf702 ps dvips -q -o %o %i 0 string GIF tiff 3 string 87a tiffgif2tiff -%f -v %V %i %o 3 string 89a ps gif2ps %i %o 0 byte0x89ps 1 string PNG ps pngtopnm %i| ppmtopgm | \ pnmscale -xysize %w %l | \ pnmtops -dpi %R -equalpixels %o 0 long0x59a66a95 tiffras2tiff -%f -v %V %i %o 0 short 0x1b45 pcl 0 short 0x1b25 pcl 0 short 0x1b26 pcl 0 short 0x1b2a pcl 0 string %PDFpdf 0 string x T psc ps psdit %i %o 0 string begin error uuencoded file support not configured 0 string xbtoa error btoa'd file support not configured 0 string P1 ps ppmtopgm %i | \ pnmscale -xysize %w %l | \ pnmtops -dpi %R -equalpixels %o 0 string P2 ps ppmtopgm %i | \ pnmscale -xysize %w %l | \ pnmtops -dpi %R -equalpixels %o 0 string P3 ps ppmtopgm %i | \ pnmscale -xysize %w %l | \ pnmtops -dpi %R -equalpixels %o 0 string P4 ps ppmtopgm %i | \ pnmscale -xysize %w %l | \ pnmtops -dpi %R -equalpixels %o 0 string P5 ps ppmtopgm %i | \ pnmscale -xysize %w %l | \ pnmtops -dpi %R -equalpixels %o 0 string P5 ps ppmtopgm %i | \ pnmscale -xysize %w %l | \ pnmtops -dpi %R -equalpixels %o 0 string P6 ps ppmtopgm %i | \ pnmscale -xysize %w %l | \

This reads quite like my problem Bug# 766861. Is this the same thing? Feel free to mark mine a duplicate if this is plausible. Bug#766861: xorg: Xorg fails to start, Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting
Package: xorg Version: 1:7.7+7 Severity: important Dear Maintainer, I normally use Gnome started via gdm. Since an update probably during the last weeks (the machine was in use headless at that time) X no longer starts, not automatically via gdm3 nor if started manually via startx or directly as ./Xorg. Bug#763329: iproute2: ip-route manpage does not mention -6 option (or almost anything IPv6 at all)
Package: iproute2 Version: 3.16.0-2 Severity: wishlist Tags: ipv6 Dear Maintainer, ip-route(8) is the manpage for the ip route command. I do agree with Debian bug #535128 that IPv4 and IPv6 outputs of ip route should be unified (as are the outputs of ip addr), but in addition to this, the option -6 should be better documented in ip-route(8), as well als the option -4. Also the manpage is very light on IPv6 content, while still refering to Linux kernels 2.x in quite a few places. This is probably only of historical interest for current users. One or two IPv6 examples would be nice, IMHO. When I select the corresponding menu item (WindowsArtwork) nothing happens though. No panel is added, no window is opened, nothing. There really should be a way to disable the status line for non-interactive use (V keypress works, but I want to use fbi in a kind of electronic picture frame). Bug#553359: Any progress on darktable?
Sorry for nagging, but is there any progress for darktable? I have seen lcms2 hang in ftp-master for about a month or two, and then suddenly disappear. Any hope to get darktable into Debian? Bug#494175: Gypsy packages
Hi Ross (and readers of bug 494175 ;)! I just downloaded your gps multiplexer packages, and I have some questions: Will this be packaged for Debian proper, or are there reasons for it to stay outside? Is there any user documentation? How do I tell it where to find the GPS? Is this developed upstream at all, or is it a dead project? As a user, should I bother with it right now? I'm asking this now, because with libchamplain and geoclue lots and lots of pieces of a geo-aware desktop are falling into place right now, but gypsy is very quiet, or so it seems to me as an outsider. Thanks for your work, and sorry if you get asked that twice a week ;) /ralph -- http://www.flickr.com/photos/sooperkuh/ -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#385019: I also need bdaddr
I want to chime in as another user who needed bdaddr and had to download and compile it manually. There is a completely trivial application of bdaddr being needed by end users: In order to pair a Wii game console remote to the computer, the adapter's MAC has to be changed. bdaddr is the only program in Linux to do this. There are countless tutorials to be googled that advise to downloadcompile bdaddr. I also don't think the argument command xy is too dangerous for the end user, therefore we don't include it holds water. There are very many commands in Linux and Unix in general that are very dangerous and can destroy a system at the selection of the wrong switch or option. One of the most trivial examples is rm, that has been shipped by Debian from the beginning. If you remove any potentially dangerous program, the archive would be very empty. bdaddr is documented very well, has its own manpage, and is required in several end user scenarios. With hope you reconsider (either as part of bluez-utils or as part of another package, I do think it is too small for its own package) and thanks for your packaging work for bluez, which works really well for me, /ralph signature.asc Description: This is a digitally signed message part

Bug#439645: compiz: Compiz lets windows sometimes slip over the top panel even with place extension
Package: compiz Version: 0.5.2-1 Severity: normal *** Please type your report below this line *** When using metacity, the top panel in Gnome (Applications menu etc.) is sacred. Never ever will anything move on top of it. In Compiz this works only 95% of the time, even with the place plugin installed. To reproduce: 1) Move a window up towards the top panel, where it will stop, so that it is sitting next to the top panel. Release the mouse button. 2) Try to push the window further up, by clicking on the window title *while moving the cursor up*. Important: Only works if the cursor is already in motion while you click. 3) See the window block the top panel, or disapear somewhere on top where it cannot be grabbed again. Package: evolution Version: 2.8.0-1 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable I hope it is ok to report bugs against experimental as grave! Bug#382296: Could this be documented somewhere prominently?
Could this be documented in the segfault mail, that /usr/share/samba/panic-action sends out as a stop-gap measure? I don´t think it is nice of a program to segfault on a previously acceptable config file option. Of course this is in unstable, and this bug report is not that hard to find, but saving maybe hundreds of users the time it takes to solving this problem should be worth a few lines in the mail mentioned above or in README.Debian. Something like a short mention of guest in smb.conf and mentioning this bug should be more than enogh IMHO. TIA /ralph

Bug#356070: alsa-utils: Manpage arecord(1) and aplay(1) should give PCM/device syntax
Package: alsa-utils Version: 1.0.10-1 Severity: normal I used arecord (and aplay) for the first time yesterday and wanted it to use the spdif connector (device 2) on my first soundcard. I did not find out the right syntax to do this from the manpage, e.g. should you use arecord -Dhw:0:2 or -Dhw:0.2 or -D/dev/snd/dev/snd/pcmC0D2c or whatever. Providing a simple exampe for this not too uncommon action would be sufficient IMHO. Finding out by trial-and-error is impossible. Also the options for listing devices are not helpful for this, because the output is very cryptic and cannot be reused for the -D option by copypaste. Also it is nowhere explained what a PCM is. Of course I know PCM, Pulse Code Modulation, but what is a PCM in this context? Is it more or less a device? The manpage should at least give a hint IMHO where to find out more, even if explaining may be too complicated. Bug#321949: gnome-panel: wnck-applet no longer brings windows to front
Package: gnome-panel Version: 2.10.2-1 Severity: important Since a recent update, wnck-applet (the mac-style window selector menu in the upper right corner) no longer works for me. For some (not all, strangely enough) windows, bringing them to front with (the main purpose of this applet) no longer works. The window list applet (MS Windows style window selector normally on the lower edge of the screen) works fine however, therefore I think it could be a problem with the Window Selector applet. I already tried purging gnome-panel and metacity, to no avail. Please ask for any further information you need to debug this problem, I will gladly provide it. I think as of today Beagle has lost its inotify dependancy (or it is supposed to do so shortly).
