Bug#1056740: Can I download preliminary packages somewhere?

2024-01-28 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Hi Dale, is there any progress on this?

Can I download preliminary prebuilt packages? I was able to find out
how to get/build a package from your repository link.

Installing the Restic REST server manually is kind of annoying, this
really would be worth a Debian package.

Thanks in advance,
Ralph

Bug#1016781: xfonts-75dpi: DEC terminal fonts do not load

2022-08-07 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: xfonts-75dpi
Version: 1:1.0.4+nmu1.1
Severity: normal
X-Debbugs-Cc: r...@pi.h5.or.at

Dear Maintainer,

I wanted to use after a longer hiatus the very old DEC terminal X11 core fonts,
eg.

term14.pcf.gz -dec-terminal-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1

The font files are in the right directory /usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi,
they are listed in a fonts.dir in that directory (above two lines are
from that file), but xlsfonts does not list them, xfontsel does not show
them (unlike the similarly old schumacher fonts), and xterm shows

  root@pix:/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi# grep dec fonts.dir
  tech14.pcf.gz -dec-terminal-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-80-dec-dectech
  techB14.pcf.gz -dec-terminal-bold-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-80-dec-dectech
  term14.pcf.gz -dec-terminal-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1
  termB14.pcf.gz -dec-terminal-bold-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1
  root@pix:/usr/share/fonts/X11/75dpi# xterm -fn
-dec-terminal-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1
  xterm: cannot load font
"-dec-terminal-medium-r-normal--14-140-75-75-c-80-iso8859-1"

Is this a bug in my setup, or a bug in the font, or in some X11 library?
If I open the font in "fontforge", everything seems normal to me (I see
a bitmap font that looks right to me).

Of course this borders on software archeology, but I do like this font,
and would love to use it.

Thanks in advance,
Ralph Aichinger

Bug#864074: Ist there a way to get a change of this setting considered?

2017-09-02 Thread Ralph Aichinger
I think this is an especially unwisely chosen default, as others
have written, it is not a problem for actual personal user accounts,
but for root accounts on yet unconfigured Debian boxes.

Would it be possible to ship an empty .vimrc for root and the first
account created during setup, e.g. by inserting an empty .vimrc into
/etc/skel?

Even in situations where Boxes are hooked up to Ansible or another
configuration management system, vim is the one software I need to
work right away without annoying me ;)

Thanks for considering,
/ralph

Bug#830972: ola_set_dmx should be better documented

2016-07-13 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: ola
Version: 0.9.1-1.1
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainers,

there is no manpage for ola_set_dmx, and the brief help text basically says:

-d, --dmx Comma separated DMX values.

What does that mean? Should I enter "-d Channel,Value,Channel2,Value2, ..."
Or should I enter "-d Channel0,Channel1,Channel2, ... Channel512",
or is it something completely different?

To add insult to injury, googling does not bring up much more than
people using 255,0,255,0 or similar for testing. But what does this do?

Especially when starting out and testing hardware of unknown working order
a more explicit description would be helpful.

Bug#767987: hylafax-client: Hardcoded font paths and fontmap files should be better documented

2014-11-03 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: hylafax-client
Version: 3:6.0.6-5
Severity: wishlist

Dear Maintainer,

adding fonts to the frontend of hylafax is not very easy. The hardcoded
font paths in hyla.conf seem somewhat outdated, and the whole
mechanism seems very fragile (hardcoding ghostscript directories).

Also it is not very well documented what has to be done to add
fonts to the frontend (e.g. change the default text font from
Courier to something else).

Thanks for considering,
/ralph

Bug#767989: hylafax-client: sendfax should cope with UTF-8 by default

2014-11-03 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: hylafax-client
Version: 3:6.0.6-5
Severity: minor

You describe how to send UTF-8 in README.Debian. I really think
this should be the default, if the dependencies are not too heavy,
as most systems have UTF-8 as a default encoding by now.

This might be less of a problem in some locales, but e.g. almost
every German text makes the sendfax program trip. For German
the text filter is of very little use in practice.

If this is not possible, a more descriptive error message
would be good, the current

foo: Can not determine file type

is not all too helpful.

Bug#767356: Is this the same thing as Bug#766861?

2014-10-31 Thread Ralph Aichinger

This reads quite like my problem Bug# 766861.
Is this the same thing? Feel free to mark mine a duplicate if this is
plausible.

Also, maybe I am stupid today, but please can you explain the workaround
more in detail? Did you rename the driver so it was not found?

TIA

Bug#766861: xorg: Xorg fails to start, Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting

2014-10-26 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: xorg
Version: 1:7.7+7
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I normally use Gnome started via gdm. Since an update probably
during the last weeks (the machine was in use headless at that
time) X no longer starts, not automatically via gdm3 nor if started
manually via startx or directly as ./Xorg. This bug might be
related to #766374 as I had the same symptom, then purged xorg
and gdm packages, only to get a non-starting X:

I will gladly supply further information.

Bug#763329: iproute2: ip-route manpage does not mention -6 option (or almost anything IPv6 at all)

2014-09-29 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: iproute2
Version: 3.16.0-2
Severity: wishlist
Tags: ipv6

Dear Maintainer,

ip-route(8) is the manpage for the ip route command. I do agree with
Debian bug #535128 that IPv4 and IPv6 outputs of ip route should be
unified (as are the outputs of ip addr), but in addition to this,
the option -6 should be better documented in ip-route(8), as well als
the option -4.

Also the manpage is very light on IPv6 content, while still refering to
Linux kernels 2.x in quite a few places. This is probably only of
historical interest for current users. One or two IPv6 examples
would be nice, IMHO.

Thanks for considering,
Ralph Aichinger

Bug#750156: puddletag: Puddletag does not Album Art panel (under Gnome 3/Gnome Shell)

2014-06-02 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: puddletag
Version: 1.0.2-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

There is supposed to be a Album Cover/Album Art panel in puddletag.
When I select the corresponding menu item (WindowsArtwork) nothing
happens though. No panel is added, no window is opened, nothing.
Album Art information is accessible by using a workaround (extended
tags), it just is not very convenient.

It seems that I am not the only one having this problem, see e.g.
http://sourceforge.net/apps/phpbb/puddletag/viewtopic.php?f=3t=137
so this *might* be an upstream bug.

It might have something to do with my using Gnome Shell/Gnome3 as a
window manager/desktop environment.

Bug#734626: fonts-opendin: Typo in Menu Name of Font (Eng*sh*rift instead of Engschrift)

2014-01-08 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: fonts-opendin

Dear Maintainer,

the menu name of the font OpenDinSchriftenEngshrift is wrong,
unless it is some kind of weird ironic use. Schrift is the German
word for font or typeface and should be spelled with a c as second letter.

It shows up as Engshrift in LibreOffice or other apps however.

Bug#691848: fbi: -v option does not work as described in manpage

2012-10-30 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: fbi
Version: 2.07-10+b1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

The manpage of fbi says:

-v be verbose: enable status line on the bottom of the screen.

That is true, but fbi does enable the status line even if this
option is not present. There really should be a way to disable
the status line for non-interactive use (V keypress works, but
I want to use fbi in a kind of electronic picture frame).

If there is, I think it is not well documented. If not, fbi
should just do as the manpage suggests: start without status
line, only show it if option -v is present.

Thanks for considering this bug,
Ralph Aichinger

Bug#677809: pspp: Output option box[0000]=a does not seem to work

2012-06-16 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: pspp
Version: 0.7.9+git20120319-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

this could be a user error on my part, but to me it seems that the option
box[]=. (and similar box options) does not seem to work.

ralph@cube:~$ pspp -O box[]=. foo.sps
pspp: -: unknown option ‘box[]’
Valid cases = 40; cases with missing value(s) = 0.

I also tried the devices configuration file, but undestanding the
documentation is very very hard. A simple example devices file would make
this a lot easier. A example could show changing width, box characters, etc.

Bug#675470: Subject: xsane: Should include 256x256px sized icon

2012-06-01 Thread Ralph Aichinger

Subject: xsane: Should include 256x256px sized icon
Package: xsane
Version: 0.998-3+b1
Severity: minor

Hello!

Please include larger icon sizes for gnome-shell. See linked
Screenshot:

http://www.pangea.at/~ralph/applications-icons-large.png

There is a larger icon at:

http://www.xsane.org/xsane-logo2.jpg

While not perfect, this would be a lot better than the current one.

Thanks in advance,

Bug#675492: Please include larger 256x256 and 48x48px icons

2012-06-01 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Subject: fontforge: Please include larger 256x256 and 48x48px icons
Package: fontforge
Version: 0.0.20120101+git-2
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

please include larger icon sizes for gnome-shell. See linked
Screenshot:

http://www.pangea.at/~ralph/applications-icons-large.png

Gnome guidelines say:

Sizes covered should include 16x16, 22x22 (24x24), 32x32, 48x48 and
256x256.

http://developer.gnome.org/Gnome3PortingGuide/

I think these icon sizes are useful for KDE as well.

I did look on fontforge's website, but did not find anything suitable
that could be dropped in instantly, but other distributions (RedHat,
etc.) should have similar icon requirements, maybe they've got one
stashed away somewhere?

Bug#655697: bluez: File 62-bluez-hid2hci as described in NEWS.Debian does not exist

2012-01-13 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: bluez
Version: 4.96-3
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

I was trying to get my bluetooth keyboard working with bluez from
unstable, and found http://wiki.debian.org/BluetoothUser, but this
describes old, deprecated setups.

Trying that pointed me to /usr/share/doc/bluez/NEWS.Debian.gz
in an error message.

There you say: Adding new devices can be done by dropping rules into
/etc/udev/rules.d/ similar to ones found in
  /lib/udev/rules.d/62-bluez-hid2hci.

except that this file does not exist (any longer?).

Putting an example somewhere, updating the Wiki to reflect current
status, or documenting it in some other way would be very helpful.

Bug#553359: Any progress on darktable?

Sorry for nagging, but is there any progress for darktable?

I have seen lcms2 hang in ftp-master for about a month or two,
and then suddenly disappear.

Any hope to get darktable into Debian? I have heard it is a really
good raw converter, and would like to try it out.

Bug#494175: Gypsy packages

2009-08-01 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Hi Ross (and readers of bug 494175 ;)!

I just downloaded your gps multiplexer packages, and I
have some questions: Will this be packaged for Debian
proper, or are there reasons for it to stay outside?

Is there any user documentation? How do I tell it
where to find the GPS?

Is this developed upstream at all, or is it a dead project?
As a user, should I bother with it right now?

I'm asking this now, because with libchamplain and geoclue
lots and lots of pieces of a geo-aware desktop are falling
into place right now, but gypsy is very quiet, or so it
seems to me as an outsider.

Thanks for your work, and sorry if you get asked that
twice a week ;)

Bug#385019: I also need bdaddr

2009-05-21 Thread Ralph Aichinger
I want to chime in as another user who needed bdaddr and had to download
and compile it manually. There is a completely trivial application of
bdaddr being needed by end users: In order to pair a Wii game console
remote to the computer, the adapter's MAC has to be changed. bdaddr is
the only program in Linux to do this. There are countless tutorials
to be googled that advise to downloadcompile bdaddr.

I also don't think the argument command xy is too dangerous for the
end user, therefore we don't include it holds water. There are very
many commands in Linux and Unix in general that are very dangerous
and can destroy a system at the selection of the wrong switch or
option. One of the most trivial examples is rm, that has been
shipped by Debian from the beginning. If you remove any potentially
dangerous program, the archive would be very empty.

bdaddr is documented very well, has its own manpage, and is required
in several end user scenarios.

With hope you reconsider (either as part of bluez-utils or as part
of another package, I do think it is too small for its own package)
and thanks for your packaging work for bluez, which works really
well for me,

/ralph

Bug#505457: grub-pc: GRUB manpage NAME fields should be more descriptive

2008-11-12 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.96+20080724-12
Severity: minor

Manpage NAME entries are helpful when using the apropos
command. Unfortunately apropos grub only produces:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ apropos grub
grub-editenv (1) - manual page for grub-editenv (GRUB) 1.96
grub-emu (8) - manual page for grub-emu (GRUB) 1.96

grub-setup (8) - manual page for grub-setup (GRUB) 1.96
update-grub (8) - manual page for update-grub (GNU GRUB )

I already know these are man pages ;)

Contrast this with e.g.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ apropos hal
gnome-eject (1) - Mount drives and volumes using HAL and read
settings f...
gnome-mount (1) - Mount drives and volumes using HAL and read
settings f...
gnome-umount (1) - Mount drives and volumes using HAL and read

hal-get-property (1) - get a property from a device object
hal-is-caller-locked-out (1) - determine if a caller is locked out
hal-lock (1) - lock an interface

which is much more helpful.

Thanks for considering!

Bug#458723: gnome-nettool: traceroute broken for normal user, bad error message

2008-01-02 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: gnome-nettool
Version: 2.20.0-1
Severity: normal

When I start gnome-nettool as a normal user,
and try to use the traceroute tab, the following
happens: Trace button turns red, status bar looks
as if the program does something, and then nothing.
No error message whatsoever.

Only when I start gnome-nettool from a terminal I
get the following message in the terminal:

The specified type of tracerouting is allowed for superuser only

Most users using gnome-nettool will not start it
from the terminal and will therefore be confused.

*And* there are ways of tracerouting that normal
users are allowed to do. Why are these not used?

TIA

Bug#457553: mpdskip: short description in manpage wrong

2007-12-23 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: mpdtoys
Version: 0.4
Severity: minor

Seems to be a copy and paste error: The short NAME
description in the manpage of mpskip is wrong
(it says fade mpd volume in or out instead of
mpskip makes mpd emulate a skipping record as
in DESCRIPTION.

Thanks for the great tools btw., I only a few
days ago needed something like mpdfade and
had to emulate it with a shellscript running
mpdc in a for loop (which sucks of course).

Package: pavumeter

If I understand the manpage correctly, pavumeter

not sinks (playback volume).

Bug#451727: Subject: gnome-media: vumeter should be removed from menus whenpulseaudio replaces esd

2007-11-17 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: gnome-media
Version: 2.20.1-1
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

pulseaudio-esound-compat conflicts esound, but it seems
the VU meter vumeter no longer works with pulseaudio-esound-
compat: For me it says Cannot connect to sound daemon. Please
run esd at a command prompt.

But even if it worked, it would be confusing to the user to
have two competing vu meters[1] (one of them working only in
some applications), so I think it would be good to remove
vumeter at least from the menu, as the pavumeter of pulseaudio
is much nicer anyway and it is redundant.

[1] actually four: two for recording, two for playback

Bug#439645: compiz: Compiz lets windows sometimes slip over the top panel even with place extension

2007-08-26 Thread Ralph Aichinger

Package: compiz
Version: 0.5.2-1
Severity: normal

*** Please type your report below this line ***

When using metacity, the top panel in Gnome (Applications menu etc.) is
sacred. Never ever will anything move on top of it. In Compiz this
works only 95% of the time, even with the place plugin installed.

To reproduce:

1) Move a window up towards the top panel, where it will
stop, so that it is sitting next to the top panel. Release
the mouse button.

2) Try to push the window further up, by clicking on the window
title *while moving the cursor up*. Important: Only works if
the cursor is already in motion while you click.

3) See the window block the top panel, or disapear somewhere on
top where it cannot be grabbed again.

Screenshot:
http://www.pangea.at/%7eralph/compiz-over-toppanel.png

You might say so don't do that, but as a matter of fact,
I do that unintentionally three or four times per day on average,
and very often resort to xkill or Ctrl-v to get rid of the
window. I really think this is a bug that should be killed ; )
Compiz really is a good replacement for metacity for me, if
it were not for that bug.

TIA
/ralph

Bug#400208: evolution: Evolution crashes: 'BadImplementation (server does not implement operation)'

2006-11-24 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: evolution
Version: 2.8.0-1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I hope it is ok to report bugs against experimental
as grave!

When I open Evolution since the most recent upgrade, it will
crash after a few klicks with the following error:

CalDAV Eplugin starting up ...
libnm_glib_nm_state_cb: dbus returned an error.

files
get ralph imap://[EMAIL PROTECTED]/
Find Items 0
The program 'evolution-2.8' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadImplementation (server does not implement operation)'.
  (Details: serial 15427 error_code 17 request_code 152 minor_code 22)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

starting evolution with --sync (as suggested in the error message) does
not change anything.

Bug#388089: metacity: Title font not picked up for some fonts

I'm experiencing some weirdness in font rendering myself too. Can you
confirm this only happens in metacity? ( i.e. try using the font for the
 desktop and stuff )

Yes, this only affects Metacity. The fonts in question work fine
everywhere else.

Plus, there has been a metacity upload in experimental. If you see the
problem is only metacity-related, can you test it?

Ooh, stupid me, should have tested that beforehand. The version
in experimental works perfectly with all the affected fonts.

Should I close the bug or leave it up to the maintainer?

Thanks!

Bug#388089: metacity: Title font not picked up for some fonts

2006-09-18 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: metacity
Version: 1:2.14.5-1
Severity: normal

When I want to change the title font to e.g. Myriad Web
or Caflisch Web from Adobe, the font is not picked up in Window titles.
It works everywhere else in Gnome.

See Screenshot:

http://www.pangea.at/~ralph/font-prefs-not-picked-up-windowtitle.png

fc-list gives:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ fc-list | grep Cafl
Caflisch Script
Web:style=Regular,Normal,Standard,Normale,Standaard,Normaali,∫·Ó
ÔÓÈο,Normalny,Normál,é·˚˜Ì˚È,obyãejné,Navadno,Arrunta,obyčejné,Κανονικά,Обычный

Maybe some of the UTF-8 characters confuse Metacity?

Bug#382296: Could this be documented somewhere prominently?

2006-08-10 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Could this be documented in the segfault mail, that
/usr/share/samba/panic-action sends out as a stop-gap
measure?

I don´t think it is nice of a program to segfault
on a previously acceptable config file option.

Of course this is in unstable, and this bug report is not that
hard to find, but saving maybe hundreds of users the
time it takes to solving this problem should be worth a
few lines in the mail mentioned above or in README.Debian.

Something like a short mention of guest in smb.conf
and mentioning this bug should be more than enogh IMHO.

Bug#356070: alsa-utils: Manpage arecord(1) and aplay(1) should give PCM/device syntax

2006-03-09 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: alsa-utils
Version: 1.0.10-1
Severity: normal

I used arecord (and aplay) for the first time yesterday and
wanted it to use the spdif connector (device 2) on my first
soundcard. I did not find out the right syntax to do this
from the manpage, e.g. should you use

arecord -Dhw:0:2 or -Dhw:0.2 or -D/dev/snd/dev/snd/pcmC0D2c

or whatever. Providing a simple exampe for this not too uncommon
action would be sufficient IMHO. Finding out by trial-and-error
is impossible. Also the options for listing devices are not
helpful for this, because the output is very cryptic and cannot
be reused for the -D option by copypaste.

Also it is nowhere explained what a PCM is. Of course I know
PCM, Pulse Code Modulation, but what is a PCM in this context?
Is it more or less a device? The manpage should at least give
a hint IMHO where to find out more, even if explaining may be too
complicated.

Thanks!
/ralph

Bug#356099: enemies-of-carlotta: Child process of eoc_transport transport was terminated

2006-03-09 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: enemies-of-carlotta
Version: 1.0.3-1
Severity: normal

EOC seems to crash on me during delivery of messages.

Child process of eoc_transport transport (running command

   (Killed)

I am a bit at loss how to diagnose the problem without bothering
list subscribers with too many test messages, are there any log
files that might bring up suspicious things?

Bug#321949: gnome-panel: wnck-applet no longer brings windows to front

2005-08-08 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: gnome-panel
Version: 2.10.2-1
Severity: important

Since a recent update, wnck-applet (the mac-style window selector
menu in the upper right corner) no longer works for me.

For some (not all, strangely enough) windows, bringing them to
front with (the main purpose of this applet) no longer works.

The window list applet (MS Windows style window selector normally
on the lower edge of the screen) works fine however, therefore
I think it could be a problem with the Window Selector applet.

I already tried purging gnome-panel and metacity, to no avail. Please
ask for any further information you need to debug this problem, I will
gladly provide it.

TIA

Bug#258097: Beagle loses inotify dependency

2005-02-24 Thread Ralph Aichinger
I think as of today Beagle has lost its inotify dependancy (or
it is supposed to do so shortly). No kernel modification is
needed any more to package it for Debian, though of course
having inotify is the preferred way of operating.

Is there any progress with packaging, now that this problem
has been solved?

TIA
/ralph

Bug#292184: Misdetected: PFA (Postscript Font ASCII)

2005-01-25 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: shared-mime-info
Version: 0.15-1
Severity: normal

The usual misdetect/security warning:

http://www.pangea.at/~ralph/trajanwarning.png

The fist 100 lines of the file in question
(I think I can't put up all of it, if 100
lines are not enough, I think I can mail it
to you personnally):

http://www.pangea.at/~ralph/Trajan-Regular-head-100.pfa

This font comes from an Adobe-endorsed product, it is
not converted in any way (except applying head -100 to it for
copyright reasons). It therefore can be seen as an authoritative
instance of a PFA font. Please ask if you need more of them.

You can also create PFA fonts by using pfbtopfa from package
gs-common. I've put up a font produced this way with

+++-==-==-
ii gs-common 0.3.6-0.1 Common files for different Ghostscript
relea

at

www.pangea.at/~ralph/g043003t.pfa

These fonts look very similar and are also misdetected in
the same way.

Bug#292192: Misdetected: AFM (Adobe Font Metrics)

2005-01-25 Thread Ralph Aichinger
Package: shared-mime-info

This is a companion, but not a dupe of bug 292184

AFM files are misdetected as SunOS News font, see:

The file in question is at

http://www.pangea.at/~ralph/Trajan-Regular.afm

I think it is ok for me to put it up copyright-wise,
as these AFM-files are or were freely distributed by Adobe.
