Bug#412361: amarok: id3 tags are mis-interpreted when read from vfat partition.
package: amarok version: 1.4.4-4 severity: normal I moved my mp3 collection from an ext3 partition to one formatted with vfat so I can share those files between Windows and Linux. Before the move the Guns N' Roses - Greatest Hits showed up as Guns N' Roses/Greatest Hits in the amarok collection. After moving the folder to the vfat drive, it became Various Artists/Greatest Hits... Then I copied the folder to a ext3 drive, too and then all the songs showed up *twice* below Guns N' Roses... very strange to me. Bug#395853: apache2-common: removes symlinks on upgrade
How does it do that? It does rm -f /var/lib/dpkg/info/apache2-common.postrm in its preinst. Ok. Oh, but they were created by apache2-common. Sorry, but that's not true. /etc/apache2/conf.d/mediawiki1.7 is created by calling ln -s inside mediawiki1.7's postinst. Besides, apache ain't the only package that has the ability to create files there, right? You purged the package, which means that you want to erase all traces of it. When you at the same time installed another package providing the same files, you are (from the package management point of view) inconsistent and stuff breaks. I don't quite get your point. /etc/apache2/conf.d/mediawiki1.7 isn't provided by apache. I just took a look at the postrm file from apache2.2-common and it seems it does not longer try to remove all symlinks in /etc/apache2/conf.d ... I really appreciate that improvement compared to apache2-common's very greedy behavior. Thanks, Thomas -- GMX DSL-Flatrate 0,- Euro* - Überall, wo DSL verfügbar ist! Bug#395854: apache2.2-common: does not run cgi-bin files anymore
* Thomas Schoepf | upgrade from apache2-common (I'm running testing). Now, I cannot run any cgi-bin files anymore. Default configuration does not work either. | Instead of running the cgi-bin files, my browser just shows me the source code of the cgi file. Do you have mod_cgi enabled? Note that the default configuration does not run any CGI files outside of /usr/lib/cgi-bin, so if you accepted the new conffiles, you might accidentially have gotten an «AddHandler cgi-script .cgi» directive disabled. I found out that renaming the file test.sh to test helped. In the meantime I tried boa, which showed the exact same behavior. At the moment I cannot reproduce it at all, cgis are running normally... Bug#395853: apache2-common: removes symlinks on upgrade
| package: apache2-common Please don't file bugs against non-existent packages. It was existant at least a week ago (I'm running testing). Obviously it was removed with the upgrade to apache2.2-common. I didn't recheck that. At the moment, http://packages.debian.org/testing/net/apache2-common says it still exists. Given that a2dissite is not called as part of any of the maintainer scripts for apache2.2-common, I somehow don't think the problem lies with Apache here. apache2-common does remove all symlinks in its postrm on purge: for i in `find /etc/apache2 -type l`; do rm -f $i done So whenever apache2-common gets purged (e.g. after the upgrade to apache2.2-common), one has to recreate those links. In my opinion this is a bit too eager. Better have some unused links (created manually or by other packages) than to have to recreate them. Bug#395853: apache2-common: removes symlinks on upgrade
Then don't purge it before installing apache2.2. apache2.2-common works around this. How does it do that? As this seems to be an user error rather than an error in the package, there's nothing we can do to fix this. Mind if I close the bug? Yes, I do mind. At least if you insist that it was my fault. Because then I'll insist that I rely on a package not to delete files that clearly weren't created by the package itself. Otherwise I don't see much point in changing a package that doesn't exist anymore. Thanks, Thomas -- Der GMX SmartSurfer hilft bis zu 70% Ihrer Onlinekosten zu sparen! Bug#386444: Pkg-mediawiki-devel post from [EMAIL PROTECTED] requires approval
Hello Romain, The upgrade from 1.4 to 1.5 was not clear and not well documented, that is the main reason why we did not make it automatic, as well as the utf8 things. Btw: Do you know whether upgrading from 1.4 directly to 1.7 works better? Thank for the feedback, we should update the documentation later. I'd suggest to update the documenation earlier, because it e.g. ignores the fact that /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php and /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/AdminSettings.php are symlinks into /etc/mediawiki1.5 right after installing the package. Also, you should have tried with a symlink as I was proposing, because all the files, in fine, are in /var/lib/mediawiki not un share.. I guess you mean /var/lib/mediawiki1.5, right? Of course, that raises the question why a (plain fresh installed) mediawiki1.5 is looking for /usr/share/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php in the first place. Using a symlink from /usr/share/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php to /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php in fact changed the result. On trying to access the wiki instead of the usual front-page I get the error: Fatal error: Call to undefined function: wfgetmaincache() in /usr/share/mediawiki1.5/includes/Setup.php on line 109 Btw: /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php is not modified compared to /etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php Thomas -- Feel free - 10 GB Mailbox, 100 FreeSMS/Monat ... Hello Romain, I'd suggest to update the documenation earlier, because it e.g. ignores the fact that /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php and /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/AdminSettings.php are symlinks into /etc/mediawiki1.5 right after installing the package. Could you explain this, I didn't understand.. Look at the README.Debian upgrade documentation and you'll see. Points 4 and 9 to be precise. Copying those php files onto those symlinks will give you files in the location where the symlink points to (i.e. /etc/mediawiki1.5) Now, point 9 tells me to move those symlinks into /etc/mediawiki1.5 all the files, in fine, are in /var/lib/mediawiki not un share.. I guess you mean /var/lib/mediawiki1.5, right? It is the same thing for all packages, see below.. No. They are two different directories. europa:~# l -d /var/lib/mediawiki1.5 /var/lib/mediawiki drwxr-xr-x 4 www-data www-data 4096 Sep 7 18:55 /var/lib/mediawiki drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Sep 15 19:19 /var/lib/mediawiki1.5 europa:~# Of course, that raises the question why a (plain fresh installed) mediawiki1.5 is looking for /usr/share/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php in the first place. Simply because we seperate the files and put those that are not meant to be modified in /usr/share and those that are meant to be changed to /var/lib Then the upgrade documentation in README.Debian is wrong and needs to be fixed accordingly. Do you agree? Btw: /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php is not modified compared to /etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php What do you mean? Bug#205702: less: provide text preprocessors as an option for users
Hi, well, that's right, I don't want text(file) processors for less :-) Frankly spoken, including optional text(file) processors would very likely raise questions and requests to make (at least some of) them standard... What I have done a few years ago was to offer users a standard interface to integrate their own custom file processors. I still believe that's the right way to go to process text files. As far as manpages are concerned: man itself can use less as a pager program. But maybe this does not offer all the features that you'd like to have? Bug#367619: Re: Bug#367619: powernowd: does not consider sys-cpu load
Reading the source, system time is always included in the calculation. There is an option to decide whether to include or exclude nice'd processes, but user, system, irq, and softirq time is always included. In the mean time, I changed the way, powernowd calculates the system's load. I added the iowait time to the calculation (see attached tiny patch). Since then I haven't noticed that powernowd didn't scale up the cpu frequency when the load was high. Even if the name iowait suggests that it's not an active load to the system, there seems to be enough iowait load in certain situations t0 kep powernowd from scaling up the frequency. I'm running this modified powernowd since about 10 days and haven't noticed any negative side effects. Instead, it does exactly what I expect it to do. Any changes to include this change upstream? Bug#371740: cupsys: no connection to usb after upgrade
Thanks for the hint. I found out what's wrong using Google. But this cannot be the goal. So, what at least should be done in my opinion is: 1. Change the error message to something that is actually useful. The current message surely is not telling that /dev/usb/lp* device names are simply deprecated. (btw: the logic those device names might change, so we don't even try to use them anymore makes not much sense in case there is only one printer...) 2. At least give a hint in NEWS.debian. Bug#308456: mysql-server: dropped schemata keep reappearing
Hi Christian, it happened again :) the directory /var/lib/mysql/test is back, it's empty, but it's back. It looks like this: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ll -d /var/lib/mysql/test drwxr-xr-x 2 mysql root 4096 May 16 08:25 /var/lib/mysql/test [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ The other directories in /var/lib/mysql belong to the group mysql... Take a look at the timestamp of the directory and the tables within (if there are any tables) and cross-check that with the runtimes of your cronjobs and /etc/cron.daily/*, /etc/cron.d/* and /etc/logrotate.*/* (and of course with the times you fire up this administrator who might think that he is in charge of recreating it...:)) bye, -christian- -- 5 GB Mailbox, 50 FreeSMS http://www.gmx.net/de/go/promail +++ GMX - die erste Adresse für Mail, Message, More +++ mysql-syslog Description: Binary data

Good morning! I do not know about such a thing but am not quite sure what you call a schema? Does it match one of database, table or view? It's a database. The MySQL Administrator calls it a Schema. If so, just issue a SHOW TABLES; etc in the command line client or look into /var/lib/mysql/ (if it's not innodb) to see if your files really went away after you tried to remove them. The strange thing is that it does go away - temporarily. I looked into /var/lib/mysql and there was no directory test anymore after dropping this database. I dropped it again using the mysql-admin, but after some time, it reappears. It's empty, but it's back again. I removed it now for about half a dozen times. Bug#292726: buffer overflow in charset (CAN-2005-0086)
The bug is Redhat specific. It was introduced by a patch they apply to less. This is a comment taken from https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=145527 Additional Comment #15 From Josh Bressers (Security Response Team) on 2005-01-25 09:27 --- I've done some investigating on this issue. This problem is caused by a patch we apply to the RHEL3 less. It does not affect the original version, or any upstream versions I've tried. Joey Hess wrote: Package: less Version: 382-2 Severity: grave Tags: security patch less is vulnerable to a head-based buffer overflow that can be triggered by viewing certian binary files. This is theoretically exploitable by providing a user with such a file and waiting for him to run less on it. The problem was discovered by redhat and involves the expand_linebuf function neglecting to expand the size of the charset buffer when it expands the other buffers. Details in their BTS, including a test case and a patch: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=145527 I tried to exploit it on Debian but failed to see the crash, however this could be due to setup differences from red hat. Bug#292254: less: fails to display lines on piped input from pstree
I am not surprised that the pstree output is not displayed correctly. pstree is using a lot of control sequences which more does not care about. less on the other hand needs to know about what happens to the screen when control sequences are used. (see the manpage for option -R). The fix is quite simple: tell pstree not to use control sequences to draw the lines on the screen but ascii characters: pstree -A | less.
