Bug#357979: Old bug, do you still have the problem ?

2007-03-03 Thread Thomas Schoepf
Yes, I just tried again with version 3.5.5-3.
One still cannot delete multiplicities hitting Del.

I stopped using umbrello because of its very poor quality.

Bug#412361: amarok: id3 tags are mis-interpreted when read from vfat partition.

2007-02-25 Thread Thomas Schoepf
package: amarok
version: 1.4.4-4
severity: normal

I moved my mp3 collection from an ext3 partition to one formatted with vfat so
I can share those files between Windows and Linux.

Before the move the Guns N' Roses - Greatest Hits showed up as Guns N'
Roses/Greatest Hits in the amarok collection. After moving the folder to the
vfat drive, it became Various Artists/Greatest Hits...

Then I copied the folder to a ext3 drive, too and then all the songs showed up
*twice* below Guns N' Roses... very strange to me.

That's what the ID3 tag looks like:

Bug#395853: apache2-common: removes symlinks on upgrade

2006-10-29 Thread Thomas Schoepf
  How does it do that?
It does rm -f /var/lib/dpkg/info/apache2-common.postrm in its preinst.

Ok.

Oh, but they were created by apache2-common.

Sorry, but that's not true. /etc/apache2/conf.d/mediawiki1.7 is created by
calling ln -s inside mediawiki1.7's postinst.
Besides, apache ain't the only package that has the ability to create files
there, right?

 You purged the package,
which means that you want to erase all traces of it. When you at the
same time installed another package providing the same files, you are
(from the package management point of view) inconsistent and stuff breaks.

I don't quite get your point. /etc/apache2/conf.d/mediawiki1.7 isn't provided
by apache.

I just took a look at the postrm file from apache2.2-common and it seems it
does not longer try to remove all symlinks in /etc/apache2/conf.d ...
I really appreciate that improvement compared to apache2-common's very greedy
behavior.

Thanks,
Thomas

Do you have mod_cgi enabled? Note that the default configuration does
not run any CGI files outside of /usr/lib/cgi-bin, so if you accepted
the new conffiles, you might accidentially have gotten an «AddHandler
 cgi-script .cgi» directive disabled.

I found out that renaming the file test.sh to test helped. In the meantime
I tried boa, which showed the exact same behavior. At the moment I cannot
reproduce it at all, cgis are running normally...

No idea what it was, I don't mind closing this bug report.

Bug#395853: apache2-common: removes symlinks on upgrade

2006-10-28 Thread Thomas Schoepf
 | package: apache2-common

Please don't file bugs against non-existent packages.

It was existant at least a week ago (I'm running testing). Obviously it was
removed with the upgrade to apache2.2-common. I didn't recheck that.
At the moment, http://packages.debian.org/testing/net/apache2-common says it
still exists.

Given that a2dissite is not called as part of any of the maintainer
scripts for apache2.2-common, I somehow don't think the problem lies
 with Apache here.

apache2-common does remove all symlinks in its postrm on purge:

for i in `find /etc/apache2 -type l`; do
rm -f $i
done

So whenever apache2-common gets purged (e.g. after the upgrade to
apache2.2-common), one has to recreate those links.

In my opinion this is a bit too eager. Better have some unused links (created
manually or by other packages) than to have to recreate them.

Thanks,
Thomas

2006-10-28 Thread Thomas Schoepf

Then don't purge it before installing apache2.2. apache2.2-common
 works around this.

How does it do that?

As this seems to be an user error rather than an
error in the package, there's nothing we can do to fix this. Mind if
 I close the bug?

Yes, I do mind. At least if you insist that it was my fault. Because then I'll
insist that I rely on a package not to delete files that clearly weren't
created by the package itself.

Otherwise I don't see much point in changing a package that doesn't exist
anymore.

Hello,

it seems that the call to ioperm(), which is not available on hppa, is the
culprit. Glibc on hppa does not offer a sys/io.h header file.

Is there a way to write suspend2-userui without using ioperm()? I don't know
whether there's a portable replacement.

Thanks,

Hello,

To estimate the amount of time it would take, wipe would have to prescan
the entire directory structure to estimate the total size. This would
be slow. Hence it would require an option to activate it. I don't know
if it is really that important ?

Bug#386444: Pkg-mediawiki-devel post from [EMAIL PROTECTED] requires approval

2006-09-15 Thread Thomas Schoepf
Hello Romain,

The upgrade from 1.4 to 1.5 was not clear and not well documented, that
is the main reason why we did not make it automatic, as well as the
 utf8 things.

Btw: Do you know whether upgrading from 1.4 directly to 1.7 works better?

Thank for the feedback, we should update the documentation later.

I'd suggest to update the documenation earlier, because it e.g. ignores the
fact that /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php and
/var/lib/mediawiki1.5/AdminSettings.php are symlinks into /etc/mediawiki1.5
right after installing the package.

Also, you should have tried with a symlink as I was proposing, because
all the files, in fine, are in /var/lib/mediawiki not un share..

I guess you mean /var/lib/mediawiki1.5, right?

Of course, that raises the question why a (plain fresh installed) mediawiki1.5
is looking for /usr/share/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php in the first place.

Using a symlink from /usr/share/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php to
/var/lib/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php in fact changed the result. On trying
to access the wiki instead of the usual front-page I get the error:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: wfgetmaincache() in
/usr/share/mediawiki1.5/includes/Setup.php on line 109

Btw: /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php is not modified compared to
/etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php

Bug#386444: Pkg-mediawiki-devel post from [EMAIL PROTECTED] requires approval

2006-09-15 Thread Thomas Schoepf
Hello Romain,

I'd suggest to update the documenation earlier, because it e.g. ignores
 the
  fact that /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php and
  /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/AdminSettings.php are symlinks into
 /etc/mediawiki1.5
  right after installing the package.

Could you explain this, I didn't understand..

Look at the README.Debian upgrade documentation and you'll see. Points 4 and 9
to be precise. Copying those php files onto those symlinks will give you files
in the location where the symlink points to (i.e. /etc/mediawiki1.5)
Now, point 9 tells me to move those symlinks into /etc/mediawiki1.5

all the files, in fine, are in /var/lib/mediawiki not un share..

I guess you mean /var/lib/mediawiki1.5, right?

It is the same thing for all packages, see below..

No. They are two different directories.

europa:~# l -d /var/lib/mediawiki1.5 /var/lib/mediawiki
drwxr-xr-x 4 www-data www-data 4096 Sep 7 18:55 /var/lib/mediawiki
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 Sep 15 19:19 /var/lib/mediawiki1.5
europa:~#

Of course, that raises the question why a (plain fresh installed)
mediawiki1.5 is looking for /usr/share/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php in
  the first place.

Simply because we seperate the files and put those that are not meant to
 be
modified in /usr/share and those that are meant to be changed to /var/lib

Then the upgrade documentation in README.Debian is wrong and needs to be fixed
accordingly. Do you agree?

Btw: /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php is not modified compared to
  /etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php

 What do you mean?

This:

europa:/var/lib/mediawiki1.5# md5sum /etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php
/etc/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php
27dc76c437d12c472fcea9167d260099 /etc/mediawiki/LocalSettings.php
27dc76c437d12c472fcea9167d260099 /etc/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php
europa:/var/lib/mediawiki1.5#

Which step is supposed to modify LocalSettings.php?

strace tells me it's looking for

Try to you put the LocalSettings.php in /usr/share/mediawiki1.5 or create
 a
 link /usr/share/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php -
 /var/lib/mediawiki1.5/LocalSettings.php

Well, the question seems to me: why does the documentation in UPGRADE.gz (which
I assume is tested) tell me to put LocalSettings.php in /var/lib/mediawiki1.5
if upgrade.php does not look there but in /usr/share/mediawiki1.5?

- is UPGRADE.gz wrong?
- is upgrade.php wrong?
- or should there be a LocalSettings.php in /usr/share/mediawiki1.5?

That's what I would like to get resolved first.

Thanks,

If your other fonts look funny as well, try disabling antialiasing in
control center, click apply, and enable it again.

Fonts look/looked normal. Disabling/Enabling anti-aliasing didn't cause a

Bug#369571: gnudoq: prints empty grid

2006-07-31 Thread Thomas Schoepf
Hello Arnaud,

please note that bug submitters won't receive any notice if you send mail just
to the bug-number itself. If I hadn't checked the BTS today, I wouldn't have
seen your reply.

I've attached both a generated .ps file and a screenshot of the print dialog
that preceeded in the process.
The generated ps file displays an empty grid on my machine (current sid) and
another machine, it opened it on (current sarge). I use to prefer gv for
viewing .ps.
Creating a PDF from the .ps didn't change a thing.

Thanks,
Thomas

Bug#205702: less: provide text preprocessors as an option for users

2006-07-18 Thread Thomas Schoepf
Hi,

well, that's right, I don't want text(file) processors for less :-)
Frankly spoken, including optional text(file) processors would very likely
raise questions and requests to make (at least some of) them standard...
What I have done a few years ago was to offer users a standard interface to
integrate their own custom file processors.
I still believe that's the right way to go to process text files.

As far as manpages are concerned: man itself can use less as a pager program.
But maybe this does not offer all the features that you'd like to have?

 Followup-For: Bug #205702

it would be nice if you could provide the text preprocessors, such as for
man pages, as an option, perhaps as a separate script.

it is not trivial for users to figure out how to process man pages to
work with less. recently, my setup which worked fine on man zshall
stopped including the other pages, and the zsoelim error messages
disappeared because less took over the screen and they did not appear
after less quit. i don't have the time now to try to fix it, so i am
stuck with running less without good man page support or running man
without good paging support (i like to go to the next file inside less
rather than one at a time).

we get it that you don't want to have less preprocess text :-). but
doing so as an option should be beneficial, without affecting
 default behavior.

 thanks.

Bug#375334: less: doesn't display some lines

2006-06-27 Thread Thomas Schoepf
Hello Ismagulov,

I tried to reproduce this behavior with all less-related environment variables

Can you please unset your env. variables (LESS, LESSOPEN) and test it again?
Does it work as expected? If so, what to what values are those variables set?

Thanks,

 Hello Thomas,

less doesn't display some lines. To reproduce:

 * apt-get install doc-rfc-std
 * gunzip -c /usr/share/doc/RFC/draft-standard/rfc2616.txt.gz |less
 * /If an entity-body is encoded RET

 The excerpt in question is:

 1494
1495If an entity-body is encoded with a content-coding, the underlying
1496data MUST be in a form defined above prior to being encoded.
 1497

Less says that line 1495 is displayed (as expected), but displays data
MUST... (weird). The text found is not displayed (weird). Pressing C-p
shows an empty line (expected based on the line number -- 1494 is empty,
but weird according to the actual contents -- the line If an... is not
displayed). Pressing C-l shows the line If an... as 1494 (weird).
Repeating the C-p C-l sequence shifts the line numbers of the preceding
 lines by one.

I've tried this on the Linux console. TERM is linux.

 With kind regards,
 Baurzhan.

Bug#367619: Re: Bug#367619: powernowd: does not consider sys-cpu load

2006-06-11 Thread Thomas Schoepf
Reading the source, system time is always included in the calculation.
There is an option to decide whether to include or exclude nice'd
processes, but user, system, irq, and softirq time is always included.

In the mean time, I changed the way, powernowd calculates the system's load. I
added the iowait time to the calculation (see attached tiny patch). Since then
I haven't noticed that powernowd didn't scale up the cpu frequency when the
load was high.

Even if the name iowait suggests that it's not an active load to the system,
there seems to be enough iowait load in certain situations t0 kep powernowd
from scaling up the frequency.

I'm running this modified powernowd since about 10 days and haven't noticed any
negative side effects. Instead, it does exactly what I expect it to do.

Any changes to include this change upstream?

Thanks,
Thomas

Bug#371740: cupsys: no connection to usb after upgrade

2006-06-08 Thread Thomas Schoepf
Thanks for the hint. I found out what's wrong using Google. But this cannot be
the goal. So, what at least should be done in my opinion is:

1. Change the error message to something that is actually useful. The current
message surely is not telling that /dev/usb/lp* device names are simply
deprecated. (btw: the logic those device names might change, so we don't even
try to use them anymore makes not much sense in case there is only one
printer...)

2. At least give a hint in NEWS.debian. That's what I had expected...

I've seen that, too. I don't know yet what the problem is, but every time my

Although this .so file is part of libxine1, the crash didn't occur with amarok
1.4.0, only with amarok 1.4.0a. And it went away again after upgrading

So, obviously, there is some dependency from amarok on a specific version of

Bug#364541: less fails in gnome-terminal

reassign 364541 gnome-terminal

Thanks for your problem report.
Given that gnome-terminal was last changed on 21st of April, the last
version of 'less' one month earlier, and given the age of 'less' and the
number of terminals it works with without problems - as it used to with
gnome-terminal - I tend to believe this could rather have to do with recent
changes in gnome-terminal.

Thanks,

 Severity: important

When I use 'less' inside gnome-terminal, it simply does not work. I can
see the status bar at the bottom, showing the file (or whatever) that I am
viewing, but no text of that file is displayed. Also, less does not seem
to
know how large the terminal is, as the status bar shows at a fixed number
of lines (about 24) from the top of the terminal, rather than being
displayed properly at the very bottom of the terminal.

When I use less inside the virtual terminal (i.e., ctrl-alt-f1), it works
 fine.

This is a recent problem. Until a week or so ago it worked fine.

Perhaps this is a bug with gnome-terminal, but I'm reporting it here.
Maybe it needs to be forwarded...

If I can give any other useful information, let me know.

Wrong. The use of Replaces is a mandatory *part* of the fix. You don't
move a file from one package to another without using Replaces.

You're assuming that those manpages are to be moved from modutils to
manpages-dev. But they're not.
joey's fix was to disable those manpages in manpages-dev since modutils
contains them since I don't know when.
So, no move, no Replaces.

Even though I luckily was just trying out the software and so I didn't lose
work because of it, the tools should still bring up a dialog box warning
about closing a modified diagram.
After all, there already is a hint for modifications in the UI and warning
of overwriting existing files is also possible.

Thanks,

Bug#359706: tcm: prints to wrong printer, forgets changes

2006-03-28 Thread Thomas Schoepf
package: tcm
version: 2.20+TSQD-2.1
severity: normal

the TCM tools by default try to print to a printer called lp, no matter if
this printer exists or not.

the tools do not report any error or warning when printing failed, because
of a wrong printer name.

and changing the printer name is forgotten on every restart of the tools.
This is quite bothersome and annoying.

Thanks for looking into this.

Bug#357337: Unable to change the size of function calls in sequence diagrams

2006-03-16 Thread Thomas Schoepf
package: umbrello
version: 3.5.0
severity: normal

When drawing a sequence diagram sometimes you want to indicate that object A
synchroniously calls object B which synchroniously calls object C which
synchroniously calls object D.
To indicate that the calls B-C and C-D are synchronious whith the call
A-B, the bar on the timeline of object A is long enough to encompass all
the bars on the lifelines of B, C, and D.
But it seems that there is no way to change the length of those bars in
Umbrello. But this would be an essential feature for sequence diagrams.

Bug#335479: /usr/share/man/man1/rmic.1.gz is a dangling symlink

No, java-gcj-compat-dev is not installed. There are no depend, recommend or

Why is java-gcj-compat registering an alternative for a file that it does
not contain? That's how I understand the problem at the moment.

The problem seems to be in java-gcj-compat and not kaffe.

a rmic manpage in some way.

Anyway you included to less information to track down the problem.
Which system (testing/unstable) are you using and which version of
 java-gcj-compat have you installed ?

My system is is up-to-date, pure unstable.

java-gcj-compat is version 1.0.41-1.

On my system ll /usr/lib/jvm/java-gcj/man/man1/rmic.1.gz gives me a
correct link to the _grmic_ named version of java-gcj:

This like doesn't exist here:

 Datum: Wed, 12 Oct 2005 14:21:13 +1000

can you test this with the latest version less 381-2? Handling of UTF-8
 characters should be fixed there.

Perhaps not related since the encoding doesn't appear to make a
 difference,
but the current version of less (391-1) breaks on bold and underlined text
 in some man pages.

The following example works with 382-2, but not 391-1:

 This works: bboolldd
 As does this: _u_n_d_e_r_l_i_n_e
 This breaks: _bb_oo_ll_dd _aa_nn_dd
 _uu_nn_dd_ee_rr_ll_ii_nn_ee

Hello Dan,

I'll upload a new version of less that should have fixed that bug. Could you
please shortly verify if you can now enter multibyte characters? Thanks!

Bug#331502: samba: 'hide unreadable' option hides too much

2005-10-03 Thread Thomas Schoepf
package: samba
version: 3.0.14a-3
severity: normal

On a production server that I am maintaining, I use the option hide
unreadable to keep unauthorized users from seeing such restricted
directories and files.
It worked perfectly up to version 3.0.11 of samba. Some later version
changed that and version 3.0.14a-3 still hides those directories from
authorized users.
This bug could be related to bug#305747: samba: 'hide special files' option
hides *all* files in 3.0.14a-1

My video chipset is :01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: S3 Inc. VT8375

Running xine with the video switched to xshm does show the video. So it
seems the x.org video extension does not like my graphics chipset.

looks like Xorg's XVIDEO extension doesn't work with your graphics card.
Which graphics chipset are you using?

If xine -V xshm shows the video (I bet it does.), please reassign this
bug to The appropriate Xorg package!

Bug#248302:

2005-07-20 Thread Thomas Schoepf
Hello Mark,

there's a script called zless that tries to provide a wrapper around less
for viewing gzip compressed files
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=248302)
It doesn't work when input is comming from stdin, because less does not run
the input preprocessor in such a case.
zless would work tho, if less would run the preprocessor with the filename
set to -.

Do you think, this could be enabled in less?

Thanks,
Thomas

zoo suffers from a directory traversal bug. When unpacking
.zoo archives, there's no check for ../.. constructs in the file names,
which makes it possible to unpack to arbitrary locations in the file system.

unzoo was affected, too. Please see

Bug#308456: mysql-server: dropped schemata keep reappearing

Hi Christian,

it happened again :)

the directory /var/lib/mysql/test is back, it's empty, but it's back.
It looks like this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ll -d /var/lib/mysql/test
drwxr-xr-x 2 mysql root 4096 May 16 08:25 /var/lib/mysql/test
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$

The other directories in /var/lib/mysql belong to the group mysql...

I have attached an excerpt from my syslog from the same time. I hope they're
of value to you. They are different from what mysql usually writes into my
log.

Thanks,

Take a look at the timestamp of the directory and the tables within (if
there are any tables) and cross-check that with the runtimes of your

(and of course with the times you fire up this administrator who might

Bug#308456: mysql-server: dropped schemata keep reappearing

2005-05-11 Thread Thomas Schoepf
Good morning!

I do not know about such a thing but am not quite sure what you call
a schema? Does it match one of database, table or view?

It's a database. The MySQL Administrator calls it a Schema.

If so, just issue a SHOW TABLES; etc in the command line client or
look into /var/lib/mysql/ (if it's not innodb) to see if your files
really went away after you tried to remove them.

The strange thing is that it does go away - temporarily. I looked into
/var/lib/mysql and there was no directory test anymore after dropping this
database. But it reappears after several days to a few weeks.

The manpage says the default behavior is to store the full path of the
archived files:

zoo stores the full pathname of each archived file.

Bug#308456: mysql-server: dropped schemata keep reappearing

2005-05-10 Thread Thomas Schoepf
package: mysql-server
version: 4.0.24-8
severity: minor

After installing mysql-server I created a schema for testing, called test.

I dropped it again using the mysql-admin, but after some time, it reappears.
It's empty, but it's back again. I removed it now for about half a dozen
times.

Maybe there is some weekly or monthly MySql maintainance job that is
recreates the Schema?

Thanks,
Thomas

Bug#297763: less: invokes nano as editor even though EDITOR and VISUAL not set

2005-03-04 Thread Thomas Schoepf

The default for Debian's less is to fall back to /usr/bin/editor instead
of simply vi.

I'm going to document that difference in README.Debian

Thomas

 Package: less
 Version: 382-1
 Severity: normal

according to the manpage, less should invoke vi when v is pressed if
EDITOR or VISUAL env vars are not set
for some reason it insists on voking someother editor, in this case nano.

 vim is installed

Bug#297557: Bringing the pppoe device up automatically

2005-03-01 Thread Thomas Schoepf
package: ppp
severity: wishlist

What about using something like the attached script to automatically bring
up the pppoe ethernet device, now that the patch was removed?
Maybe the grep lines need to be modified, but I think a script like that
would be vary handy to have.

Thanks,
Thomas

Bug#292726: buffer overflow in charset (CAN-2005-0086)

2005-01-31 Thread Thomas Schoepf
The bug is Redhat specific. It was introduced by a patch they apply to less.
This is a comment taken from
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=145527

Additional Comment #15 From Josh Bressers (Security Response Team) on
2005-01-25 09:27 ---

I've done some investigating on this issue. This problem is caused by
a patch we apply to the RHEL3 less. It does not affect the original
version, or any upstream versions I've tried.

less is vulnerable to a head-based buffer overflow that can be triggered
by viewing certian binary files. This is theoretically exploitable by
providing a user with such a file and waiting for him to run less on it.
The problem was discovered by redhat and involves the expand_linebuf
function neglecting to expand the size of the charset buffer when it
expands the other buffers. Details in their BTS, including a test case
and a patch: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=145527
I tried to exploit it on Debian but failed to see the crash, however
this could be due to setup differences from red hat. The code seems to
be the same.
Please use CAN-2005-0086 when referring to this security hole.

Bug#292254: less: fails to display lines on piped input from pstree

2005-01-26 Thread Thomas Schoepf
I am not surprised that the pstree output is not displayed correctly. pstree
is using a lot of control sequences which more does not care about. less
on the other hand needs to know about what happens to the screen when
control sequences are used. (see the manpage for option -R).

The fix is quite simple: tell pstree not to use control sequences to draw
the lines on the screen but ascii characters: pstree -A | less.

 Package: less
 Version: 382-1
 Severity: normal

 pstree|less

fails to properly display the lines that pstree draws. Sadly, the
 following does work properly:

 pstree|more

Sorry is the day when more is more. :-)
