Bug#677880: iwlwifi: flakey and slow connection, high invalid misc count

2012-06-28 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo
Hi.

Done.
http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2370

The problem is that I think it fails too using WEP encryption.
In the dmesg attached you can read:

[35089.612272] BUG: Bad rss-counter state mm:880133a4db80 idx:1 val:-2
[35089.612283] BUG: Bad rss-counter state mm:880133a4db80 idx:2 val:2

Thanks for your time

Victor.

 Let's take this upstream.

Please send a summary of your symptoms to
 http://bugzilla.intellinuxwireless.org, product iwlwifi, component
Connectivity, version official kernel and let us know the bug number
 so we can track it.

 Be sure to mention:

  - steps to reproduce, expected result, actual result, and how
   the difference indicates a bug

  - which kernels you have tested and what happened with each

  - dmesg output from booting and reproducing the bug, as an
   attachment

  - any workarounds or other weird observations

  - a link to http://bugs.debian.org/677880 for the backstory

Hopefully someone there will have ideas (commands to run, patch
to apply, or whatever) for tracking this down further.

 Hope that helps,
 Jonathan

I think you didn't experience exactly the same problem explained in the
original report. My wifi wasn't disconnecting, but I was just annoyed by the
 syslog pollution linked to cfg80211.

So cloning to another bug report hoping you don't mind.

 Best regards,

Same problem with zd1211rw (this time it is even worst, it says it's

Ok, so either both drivers have a similar bug (or common code they
both call is broken) or there is something in the environment that is
responsible for both sets of symptoms.  Either seems possible.

Now I'm getting lost.  Can you please summarize:

  - what the setup is like --- what are the relevant machines, what
   kind of wireless router, etc

  - what kind of card each machine uses

  - what kernels you have tried on each machine and what happened with
   each

Then for concreteness, let's focus on getting this fixed on a single
machine and card (e.g., the first with the iwlwifi adapter) and go
 from there.

 Hope that helps,

[ 2971.033034] usb 1-1: Manufacturer: SMC

and 2 routers:

arcadyan arv7518 with wifi bgn
Prestige 660HW-61 with wifi bg

I was using the first one until a bug I reported some years ago.
Since it was an n issue I am now using the second one just for wifi
(the first one hangs and has some other problems when I enable its
wifi support,
although only with linux).

The wifi problem I reported has dissapear (it occurs once a week or so)
after I upgraded the Lenovo W500 to 3.3.4-1~experimental.1
and decided to install

compat-wireless-3.4-rc3-1.tar.bz2

from
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download/stable/#compat-wireless_3.4_stable_releases

At first it was an small improvement (it disconnected 2~3 times each hour)
but then I played with options and with

options iwlagn ack_check=1 fw_restart=1 11n_disable=1 bt_coex_active=0
options iwlwifi ack_check=1 fw_restart=1 11n_disable=1 bt_coex_active=0
options cfg80211 ieee80211_regdom=EU

it now disconnects once or twice a week.

I think Olivier found the same solution for his problem in
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=668547#40

The strange thing is that I've made the options change only in the
Lenovo machine,
the other machines disconnect once or twice too without any change.

I should have tested more, but since it works and I do not know which
is the problem
I decided to stop making changes.

Just let me know if you want me to test something else.
If not I think bug should be closed.

Regards,

Victor.

Hi.
After upgrading to 3.2.0.2 wireless connection disconnects too much often,
sometimes it does not connect and some others its speed does not even
allow to email reading.

When it does not connect it is usual to see in the logs

I think the problem is related to the Invalid misc field.
Now it's 384, but it is usually over 10.000

I've tried disabling wifi-N and some other options with no luck.
This is the one giving me the best performance (at least it connects).

And even disabling IPv6:
cat /etc/default/grub
# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

...

I've tried too to switch between WPA2, WPA1, WEP and no encryption.
The last disconnects less times (I'm using it now),
but there is no huge difference between them.

2011-09-04 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo
Hi Jonathan,

first of all, thanks for answering my email ;-)

I found it was caused by my router, smc-7908/arcadyan ARV7518PW-A-LF-LT.
It seems to be that when signal is not good enough its implementation
only allows clients running windows os to connect.
I have a cordless phone base and when I place it near the router no
machine running linux is capable of connecting,
although some times they connect for 2-3 minutes and disconnect
showing the same error.
I've two laptops (with dual boot, windows and linux) and a computer
with a pci card (running linux).
When running windows it takes them a little bit longer to connect, but
once connected wireless works perfectly.

I fixed it just by removing the cordless phone, but maybe I can help
to find the problem. I answer your questions below.

One more thing:
iwconfig power off
this is a fix only for driver rt2500pci when it fails to enter state 1 (-16):

rt2500pci :02:0a.0: PCI INT A - GSI 22 (level, low) - IRQ 22
phy0: Selected rate control algorithm 'minstrel'
Registered led device: rt2500pci-phy0::radio
Registered led device: rt2500pci-phy0::quality

phy0 - rt2500pci_set_device_state: Error - Device failed to enter
state 1 (-16).

I suspect the signal is weak.
When I place my laptop below the router the signal is 100%, but the
problem is still there.

Does this always happen within a few minutes of connecting?
Not always, some times it is not capable of connecting.

 Does the signal strength matter?
I do not think so, but I'm not an expert ... ;-)

If you have other wireless hardware to try, do they produce the same problem?
Yes. I tested on rt2500pci, Intel(R) Ultimate N WiFi Link 5300 AGN,
REV=0x24 (iwlagn)
and zd1211rw 1-6:1.0: firmware version 4725
(zd1211rw 1-6:1.0: zd1211b chip 0ace:1215 v4810 high 00-1a-ff
AL2230_RF pa0 g--NS)

Do current kernels behave the same way?
Yes. I now have linux-image-2.6.32-5-686 (2.6.32-35) both in a laptop
and the computer, but I tested bpo kernels in both.
In the other laptop I have linux-image-2.6.39-bpo.2-amd64
(2.6.39-3~bpo60+1) and
linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64 (2.6.32-35).
Some times they connect for 2-3 minutes and some times they do not connect.

Does downgrading the kernel to a version that worked before make it go away?
I tried kernels in stable and forcing a downgrade of all packages from
bpo to stable, but it didn't worked.

If you think that this is caused just by the router (I think so), just
close the bug.
I do not know why windows os works, but sw inside this router is a piece of crap
and my only hope is the openwrt guys succeed in running linux on it ...

Thanks.

Maybe just a warning to the user telling him/her to
check that no private information is sent without
their permissions is enough.

It still fails and I can not sent every email that makes
it fail because of privacy, but sending the complete email
is not a problem when the email has not private info.

I can't reproduce this on an Intel GPU.

Which GPU and graphics drivers do you use?

Please install the libgl1-mesa-glx-dbg package and debug packages for
any other mesa packages you have installed and then regenerate the
backtrace.

As mentioned in the changelog and README.Debian file included in the package,
the original sound and music has been removed, as they are considered not to be
distributable by Debian (most resources lack copyright information).
New music and sound has been found, and will be released with version 1.0.18.

I get this errors when I quit:

This will probably have been fixed in the new version as well, but I will check
that.

Bug#528362: linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686: Bug still on 2.6.32-5

2010-02-22 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-5
Followup-For: Bug #528362

It is strange that now it is capable of reconnect on eth0 but connection is
alive only for some seconds. Then it looses connection and tries again.

I was doing ping while this happened and it was like
ping: 0.175
   8181
   9071
   ...
   12453
   0.187

and again. I'll try to save the trace next time and report it at bugzilla.

If it loses its ip address (dhclient asks for a new one) then no answer is
obtained and I can not reconnect again.
rmmod r8169 mii
and
modprobe r8169
have no success at all.

Maybe the most strange thing is that network monitor (when this happened)
showed that there was a lot of incoming packets but no outcoming packets.
And the most awful thing is that it only happens while I am reading emails with
thunderbird ... maybe I should change to another email client :-(

Sorry for bothering u ...
Regards,

Victor

Bug#526983: linux-image-2.6.29-1-amd64: NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0 (r8169): transmit timed out

2010-01-17 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo

Maybe not so different, behavior is similar and logs too.
In
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14962
they told me to download and try r8168 driver
at www.realtek.com.tw

I'll give it a try and let you know (I'll let them know too, of course),
but I don't like the idea of installing non-debian sw ... ;-)

Regards,

Victor.

I now realise that I already wrote to you about bug #528362, where you
originally reported this, and that you said the bug was not fixed in
2.6.32. I think that #528362 and #526983 may be different bugs.

Ben.

Bug#437176: update-motd should be in debian ...

2010-01-16 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo
IMHO, it is not only useful for showing dynamic logos, but info on
updates available and/or system restart required msgs.

Ubuntu has update-motd and is really useful to see system load, needed
updates and necessity of restarting system just when you log into the
machine.

It is really useful:

Bug#562162: dante-server should allow command-line configuration of external ip/device

2009-12-23 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo
Package: dante-server
Version: 1.1.19.dfsg-3+b1
Severity: wishlist

Dante is a really useful tool, but when using dhcp to get external ip address
it exits with error.

In http://blog.edseek.com/~jasonb/articles/dante_tunnel.shtml
the author suggests a perl script to change the configuration file after dhcp
is run and set the new ip/device on danted.conf file,
but this is not the correct solution.

If it were possible to set the external ip/external device from the command
line we could just avoid stupid bug reports saying that
danted does not work due to a non-exitent external device (the one specified in
the default config file).

In this way, danted can crash (as it does) when we disable the device it is
using and we can load it again by using a dhcp exit hook.

Thanks in advance,

Victor.

Bug#528362: linux-image-2.6.32-trunk-686: Not fixed in 2.6.32

2009-12-18 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo

There is a similar bug at bugzilla:

http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14709

Maybe those times that my machine hangs is due to r8169 too,
but I'm not able to get any log when this happens.

Regards,

Victor.

I removed pci=nomsi, maybe I should try it again ...

OK, please report this upstream at http://bugzilla.kernel.org and let

2009-12-16 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo
Package: linux-image-2.6.30-bpo.2-686
Version: 2.6.30-8~bpo50+2
Followup-For: Bug #528362

Are you changing the MTU of the r8169 device (jumbo frames)?
No.

 Do you have wake-on-LAN enabled?
No.

If you add 'pci=nomsi' to the kernel command line, does this make a
 difference?
I added it (you can see the command line below).
There is no difference, but I think that reading mails is not a high speed
transmision ... :-(

This bug is related to kerneloops submission
http://www.kerneloops.org/submitresult.php?number=1028502

Thanks,

Victor.

Netdev watchdog should unload and reload module for r8169.
When it hangs I just do:
sudo rmmod r8169 mii ; sudo modprobe r8169 ; sudo modprobe mii
and it works again, but it is a mess.
It happens on all linux 2.6 kernels I've tried, experimental ones too.

Does this still occur with 2.6.30?

Cheers,
Moritz

Yes, it still occurs on 2.6.30 ...

thanks to the help of Enrico Zini enrico, we've been able to track
down the bug to a problem in IceWM itself. Attaching a minimal
testcase showing the bug. The bug happens with claws-mail too.

First, please DON'T abuse other bug reports for completely unrelated problems.

Second, read the fine manual. And run icewm-session (or icewmtray
manually) to get the xorg systray icons rendered where they should be.

That said, I am not really happy with upstream's decission to move this
functionality into an extra tool but that's life.

Eduard.

Package: icewm
Version: 1.2.37+1.3.4pre2-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I installed wicd 1.6.1-3 and, when I try to open the main window of wicd

Bug#544672: linux-image-2.6.31-rc5-686: does not reload modules if hibernation is stopped.

2009-09-02 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo
Package: linux-image-2.6.31-rc5-686

If you press backspace to stop hibernation process, modules remain unloaded
but lsmod tells that they're loaded. So, you don't have mouse or any other
device. Network can be reloaded by unloading and loading the module manually.

I installed wicd 1.6.1-3 and, when I try to open the wicd client, icewm hangs.
Maybe is just a gui problem, because as I had old configurations I was able to
access the network and downgrade the package.

Bug#528362: linux-image-2.6.29-2-686: r8169 hangs when your transmission speed is really high.

2009-05-12 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo
Package: linux-image-2.6.29-2-686
Version: 2.6.29-4
Severity: important

Netdev watchdog should unload and reload module for r8169.
When it hangs I just do:
sudo rmmod r8169 mii ; sudo modprobe r8169 ; sudo modprobe mii
and it works again, but it is a mess.
It happens on all linux 2.6 kernels I've tried, experimental ones too.

2009-03-25 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo
Package: linux-image-2.6.29-rc8-686

Ethernet driver r8169 hangs after warning message
[11245.988092] WARNING: at
/build/linux-2.6-2.6.29~rc8/debian/build/source_i386_none/net/sched/sch_generic.c:226
 dev_watchdog+0xa8/0x13b()

It only happens when I am using wired connection (Or I only see the problem
when I loose wired network connection).
It is strange because I don't receive any notification.
Network manager (wicd) says that I am still connected, but network is down and
dhclient can not succesfully obtain an ip.
You can see eth0 link up in logs but I need to reboot before I can use wired
network again.

In last page they say: You probably use the \static\ binary of mldonkey GUI.
Download
the \shared\ binaries from this site, and use that GUI. This bug is caused by
an
incompatibility between the statically linked GTK library and the themes
installed on
