Bug#715508: Acknowledgement (gdm3: System settings → displays offers unusable screen resolutions)
Even though the mode lines for the display in /var/log/Xorg.0.log are the same, under Squeeze GDM offers an additional 16:9 resolution (1364×768). Under Wheezy GDM only offers the modes detected by X, which are all 4:3.

Bug#716778: Info received (Bug#716778: gnome-session: session is unusable (looks like memory problem))
If I stop GDM and call xinit as an ordinary user, everything works as expected, e.g. I can start Lyx from the X Term window, and no letters are missing c. If I start gnome-session from the same X Term window as a user who has experienced the problem under GDM, the problem appears just as it does under GDM. For a new user, the session started is of the “classic” variety (not the new Gnome one) and works perfectly! At the beginning, an error message appears about hardware problems making it impossible to run the new Gnome session type. Unfortunately the message disappears too quickly. Switching back to GDM: whereas the new Gnome session type does not work at all (as described), so-called classic sessions work nearly perfectly. Sometimes small parts of the screen remain blank but are drawn correctly if a cursor is moved there.
Bug#716778: Info received (Bug#716778: gnome-session: session is unusable (looks like memory problem))
The problem only appears under GDM if the (default) new-style Gnome session type is used. So-called classic sessions work perfectly. Squeeze could also be installed without any such problems. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Hi, Please feel free to cc the bug log, as long as you think someone might benefit from that. The problem was that /tmp did not have enough free space, which was only reported as No space left on device without giving the device. When I managed to get 20 MB more free space on /tmp, everything went smoothly. Then I tried your first patch file (0001-atl1c-Add-AR8151-v2-support-and-change-L0s-L1-routin.patch), built the file linux-image-2.6.32-5-686_2.6.32-41squeeze2a~test_i386.de â and it seems to work! I'll keep working with this kernel for a few days and write to you. Thanks for your support. If this is the solution, will it be incorporated in the stable (Squeeze) kernel? Cheers, Axel

Input Attach still shows this problem on my machine and has not been updated. Its version is 20051019-12, too. There is a NICE value variable there but users are told not to change it and read /usr/share/doc/backuppc/README.Debian − but that file says nothing about this issue. -- System Information: Debian Release: 6.0.2 APT prefers stable-updates APT policy: (500, 'stable-updates'), (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.32-5-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages backuppc depends on: ii adduser 3.112+nmu2 add and remove users and groups ii apache2 2.2.16-6+squeeze1 Apache HTTP Server metapackage ii apache2-mpm-prefo 2.2.16-6+squeeze1 Apache HTTP Server - traditional n ii bzip2 1.0.5-6high-quality block-sorting file co ii debconf [debconf- 1.5.36.1 Debian configuration management sy ii dpkg 1.15.8.11 Debian package management system ii exim4 4.72-6+squeeze2metapackage to ease Exim MTA (v4) ii exim4-daemon-ligh 4.72-6+squeeze2lightweight Exim MTA (v4) daemon ii iputils-ping 3:20100418-3 Tools to test the reachability of ii libarchive-zip-pe 1.30-3 Perl module for manipulation of ZI pn libcompress-zlib- none (no description available) ii perl [libdigest-m 5.10.1-17squeeze2 Larry Wall's Practical Extraction ii perl-suid 5.10.1-17squeeze2 runs setuid Perl scripts ii samba-common-bin 2:3.5.6~dfsg-3squeeze5 common files used by both the Samb ii smbclient 2:3.5.6~dfsg-3squeeze5 command-line SMB/CIFS clients for ii tar 1.23-3 GNU version of the tar archiving u ii ucf 3.0025+nmu1Update Configuration File: preserv Versions of packages backuppc recommends: ii libfile-rsyncp-perl 0.68-1.1+b1 A perl based implementation of an ii libio-dirent-perl0.04-2+b1 Perl module for accessing dirent s ii openssh-client [ssh-client] 1:5.5p1-6 secure shell (SSH) client, for sec ii rrdtool 1.4.3-1 time-series data storage and displ ii rsync3.0.7-2 fast remote file copy program (lik Versions of packages backuppc suggests: ii elinks [www-browser] 0.12~pre5-2 advanced text-mode WWW browser ii epiphany-browser [www-browse 2.30.6-1Intuitive GNOME web browser ii iceweasel [www-browser] 3.5.16-9Web browser based on Firefox pn par2 none (no description available) ii w3m [www-browser]0.5.2-9 WWW browsable pager with excellent -- Configuration Files: /etc/backuppc/config.pl changed: $ENV{'PATH'} = '/bin:/usr/bin'; delete @ENV{'IFS', 'CDPATH', 'ENV', 'BASH_ENV'}; $Conf{ServerHost} = 'tulip'; chomp($Conf{ServerHost}); $Conf{ServerPort} = '-1'; $Conf{ServerMesgSecret} = ''; $Conf{MyPath} = '/bin'; $Conf{UmaskMode} = '23'; $Conf{WakeupSchedule} = [ '0.39', '1.35', '2.35', '3.35', '4.35', '5.35', '6.35', '7.35', '8.35', '9.35', '10.35', '11.35', '12.35', '13.35', '14.35', '15.35', '16.35', '17.35', '18.35', '19.35', '20.35', '21.35', '22.35', '23.44' ]; $Conf{MaxBackups} = '1'; $Conf{MaxUserBackups} = '1'; $Conf{MaxPendingCmds} = '3'; $Conf{MaxBackupPCNightlyJobs} = '2'; $Conf{BackupPCNightlyPeriod} = '4'; $Conf{MaxOldLogFiles} = '14'; $Conf{DfPath} = '/bin/df'; $Conf{DfCmd} = '$dfPath $topDir'; $Conf{SplitPath} = '/usr/bin/split'; $Conf{ParPath} = undef; $Conf{CatPath} = '/bin/cat'; $Conf{GzipPath} = '/bin/gzip'; $Conf{Bzip2Path} = '/bin/bzip2'; $Conf{DfMaxUsagePct} = '55'; $Conf{TrashCleanSleepSec} = '300'; $Conf{DHCPAddressRanges} = []; $Conf{BackupPCUser} = 'backuppc'; $Conf{TopDir} = '/media/RemovableMedia/BackupPC/'; $Conf{ConfDir} = '/etc/backuppc'; $Conf{LogDir} = ''; $Conf{InstallDir} = '/usr/share/backuppc'; $Conf{CgiDir} = '/usr/share/backuppc/cgi-bin'; $Conf{BackupPCUserVerify} = '1'; $Conf{HardLinkMax} = '31999'; $Conf{PerlModuleLoad} = undef; $Conf{ServerInitdPath} = undef; $Conf{ServerInitdStartCmd} = ''; $Conf{FullPeriod} = '6.97'; $Conf{IncrPeriod} = '0.97'; $Conf{FullKeepCnt} = [ '2' ]; $Conf{FullKeepCntMin} = '1'; $Conf{FullAgeMax} = '90'; $Conf{IncrKeepCnt} = '6'; $Conf{IncrKeepCntMin} = '1'; $Conf{IncrAgeMax} = '30'; $Conf{IncrLevels} = [ '1', '2', '3', '4', '5', '6', '7' ]; $Conf{BackupsDisable} = '0'; $Conf{PartialAgeMax} = '3'; $Conf{IncrFill} = '0'; $Conf{RestoreInfoKeepCnt} = '10'; $Conf{ArchiveInfoKeepCnt} = '10'; $Conf{BackupFilesOnly} = {}; $Conf{BackupFilesExclude} = { '*' = [ '/Backup', '/Media', '/Lenny', '/Defective', '/Video', '/Temp', '/media/', '/proc',
Bug#632419: closed by Ben Hutchings b...@decadent.org.uk (Re: Bug#632419: linux-image-2.6-686: Provides no support for serial pointer device)
Hi, Ben, Unfortunately things are not as easy as they might seem. On Mon, 4 Jul 2011, Debian Bug Tracking System wrote: Your old X configuration shows that you used the serial mouse driver in the X server, not the kernel (which is why you did not need to use inputattach). You can use the same configuration now, if you like. X works differently in this distribution. I needed a configuration file in Lenny to get the two separate screens to work. It was not a perfect setup as one screen was distorted but I found a workaround for that. In Squeeze, this is no longer necessary, both screens can be configured using the Monitors menu item, and there is no distortion. Moreover, the configuration does not work anymore as it is; it causes errors. But even if I make it work or create a barebones X configuration file just with the Pointer Device set to /dev/ttyS0, the pointer is not functional. I can set the pointer device for GPM easily; if you have any hints on how to this for X, they would be much appreciated. This takes me back to my original point: If it was possible to use a serial mouse in the past without installing separate software which is not available at installation time, why was this functionality removed? If it is not possible to recognize serial pointer devices, the installation process should include a question if no other pointer device is discovered. I had difficulty setting E Links to use the system UTF-8 setting because the documented Character set → System setting is not available via the menu item Setup → Character set. The option can be set using Setup → Options manager. 2. This makes the UTF-8 characters show up alright but: 2.1. The screen is partly garbled because: 2.1.1. the width of the characters is sometimes overestimated, e.g. ■ shows up but is calculated as being two characters wide so tables are badly formatted etc. 2.1.2. some control characters seem to be sent to the screen erroneously so that characters appear in strange places 2.2. I'm not sure if the correct order of characters in right-to-left languages is preserved. Bug#562721: elinks: garbles URLs that use other protocols
Package: elinks Version: 0.11.4-3 Severity: normal I would like to use a script to handle radio streams, so I have added the corresponding lines to /etc/elinks/elinks.conf (see attachment). Whereas the mime handlers work as described in the manual, other protocols like RTSP (real audio) and MMS show two problems: - they cannot be so well configured as the mime handlers even though everything in the explanation of that mechanism applies here as well - the URLs for those protocols is affected by changes from the start: rtsp://live1.rte.ie/redundant/0304.ra becomes: rtsp:live1.rte.ieredundant/0304.ra (= %u) %h contains live1.rte.ieredundant %d contains 0304.ra As the host address is not separated from the first path element, no tricks can be used to get around this problem. Addresses like http://66.216.18.230:80/cbc-classicalhi-192; (as opposed to, e.g., http://www.radionz.co.nz/audio/live/concert/adaptive.asx;) pose a separate problems: E Links tries to download them before handing them over to a handler. Bug#546291: gdm: erratically switches off computer without asking
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, Sorry for the delay. On Mon, 14 Sep 2009, Josselin Mouette wrote: Le dimanche 13 septembre 2009 à 09:36 +0200, a...@users.sourceforge.net a écrit : I don't believe the problem is X's fault because it does not occur in GDM's graphical login screen even if I leave the computer in this state for days; neither can it be the kernel's fault because it does not happen in console mode (i.e. without GDM and X). It only occurs in a graphical user session. I have narrowed it down: it only occurs in _my_ GDM session. If I create a new user and login as this user, the problem does not occur. Actually it could be your CPU or RAM. Please run a full memtest86, at least. The memory checked out alright. It would seem like a hradware problem, though --- if it were not limited to my sessions. It has nothing to do with load, either --- the memory test put the CPUs under quite some stress, and temperatures soared --- without causing any problems. Then I did some video encoding with a lot of load as well as memory and harddisk usage --- again without any problems. In all cases a hardware lockup cannot be caused solely by userland. I do realise that. That is why I believe it must be some program with suid rights --- like GDM. Bug#546291: gdm: erratically switches off computer without asking
Package: gdm Version: 2.20.7-4lenny1 Severity: normal The system is powered down immediately at unforeseeable times without even proper shutdown, causing data loss and destroying recordable media being burned. This happens around once or twice daily at irregular times. It is of no importance which programs are running or if a screensaver is configured. It happens regardless of user activity, even in the middle of the night. It does not happen, however, as long as: - GDM and X are not running at all or: - GDM is showing the greeter (i.e., X is running) (I tested this for about a week each.) --- i.e., it only happens in a user session Once it has happened, the computer may even switch off once or twice a few seconds after restarting. Then things calm down. There are no discernable hardware problems such as overheating, fan failure or harddisk failure. I have installed monitors. -- System Information: Debian Release: 5.0.3 APT prefers stable APT policy: (500, 'stable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.26-2-686 (SMP w/2 CPU cores) Locale: LANG=C, LC_CTYPE=C (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to en_US.utf8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages gdm depends on: ii adduser 3.110add and remove users and groups ii debconf [debconf-2. 1.5.24 Debian configuration management sy ii gksu2.0.0-8 graphical frontend to su ii gnome-session [x-se 2.22.3-2 The GNOME 2 Session Manager ii gnome-terminal [x-t 2.22.3-3 The GNOME 2 terminal emulator appl ii libart-2.0-22.3.20-2 Library of functions for 2D graphi ii libatk1.0-0 1.22.0-1 The ATK accessibility toolkit ii libattr11:2.4.43-2 Extended attribute shared library ii libc6 2.7-18 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcairo2 1.6.4-7 The Cairo 2D vector graphics libra ii libdbus-1-3 1.2.1-5+lenny1 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libdbus-glib-1-20.76-1 simple interprocess messaging syst ii libdmx1 1:1.0.2-3X11 Distributed Multihead extensio ii libfontconfig1 2.6.0-3 generic font configuration library ii libfreetype62.3.7-2+lenny1 FreeType 2 font engine, shared lib ii libglade2-0 1:2.6.2-1library to load .glade files at ru ii libglib2.0-02.16.6-2 The GLib library of C routines ii libgnomecanvas2-0 2.20.1.1-1 A powerful object-oriented display ii libgtk2.0-0 2.12.12-1~lenny1 The GTK+ graphical user interface ii libpam-modules 1.0.1-5+lenny1 Pluggable Authentication Modules f ii libpam-runtime 1.0.1-5+lenny1 Runtime support for the PAM librar ii libpam0g1.0.1-5+lenny1 Pluggable Authentication Modules l ii libpango1.0-0 1.20.5-5 Layout and rendering of internatio ii librsvg2-2 2.22.2-2lenny1 SAX-based renderer library for SVG ii librsvg2-common 2.22.2-2lenny1 SAX-based renderer library for SVG ii libselinux1 2.0.65-5 SELinux shared libraries ii libwrap07.6.q-16 Wietse Venema's TCP wrappers libra ii libx11-62:1.1.5-2X11 client-side library ii libxau6 1:1.0.3-3X11 authorisation library ii libxdmcp6 1:1.0.2-3X11 Display Manager Control Protoc ii libxext62:1.0.4-1X11 miscellaneous extension librar ii libxi6 2:1.1.4-1X11 Input extension library ii libxinerama12:1.0.3-2X11 Xinerama extension library ii libxml2 2.6.32.dfsg-5+lenny1 GNOME XML library ii lsb-base3.2-20 Linux Standard Base 3.2 init scrip ii metacity [x-window- 1:2.22.0-2 A lightweight GTK2 based Window Ma ii roxterm [x-terminal 1.11.1-1.1 multi-tabbed GTK+2 terminal emulat ii twm [x-window-manag 1:1.0.4-2Tab window manager ii xterm [x-terminal-e 235-2X terminal emulator ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-12compression library - runtime Versions of packages gdm recommends: ii gdm-themes 0.6.1 Themes for the GNOME Display Manag ii whiptail 0.52.2-11.3 Displays user-friendly dialog boxe pn xserver-xephyr | xnest none (no description available) ii xserver-xorg 1:7.3+20the X.Org X server ii zenity 2.22.1-2Display graphical dialog boxes fro Versions of packages gdm suggests: ii libpam-gnome-keyring 2.22.3-2 PAM module to unlock the GNOME key ii locales 2.7-18 GNU C Library: National Language ( ii pm-utils 1.1.2.4-1 utilities and scripts for power ma -- debconf

Bug#526736: closed by Reinhard Tartler siret...@tauware.de (Re: Bug#526736: mplayer: The duration of a file should be included in the output)
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 I think I did not make my original wish clear enough; I am sorry for that. What I would like is an option like -probeonly which would cause mplayer to not actually play any content but print (configurably) all information it gathers before it normally starts playing, i.e. e.g. the encodings used in the file, frames per second, audio samples per second and length in hours, minutes, seconds. Something roughly similar in parts can be achieved by using a command line like this: MPLAYER_VERBOSE=-6 mplayer -endpos 0 -msglevel demux=4:header=-1:cplayer=4:decaudio=5:decvideo=5:all=-1 $FILENAME But this still includes some unneeded information (like a complaint that no infrared devices are available) but does not show the length of the recording. I hope that this more detailed description now qualifies my wishlist entry for consideration. -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iEYEARECAAYFAkn9tgUACgkQMiDYPOQNapEK7ACdEVLwlODAVk/ywZEbVxpdnex5 xVMAnRObDvMkUl1LWBTLmUMeH8j3AlJH =qTz6 -END PGP SIGNATURE- -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#526735: mplayer: 'dumpstream' should be switchable (on/off) while a stream is being played
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Thanks for your helpful remarks and quick reply. On Sun, 3 May 2009, Reinhard Tartler wrote: - the wrapper is very specific to your setup: it assumes a mysql database and fwvm Quite true. I thought of providing text file containing the streams and another script updating the text file if a database is available. Unfortunately there seems to be no database like that available on the Internet. I am even thinking about making my own database available over the web through the script. I am sure the dependance on fvwm could be removed. The script will run on the command line (without setting any titles, of course). I'm sorry I forgot to include /usr/local/bin/settitle. /usr/local/bin/uxterm.fvwm2 is just an unimportant wrapper to set the font for all xterms. - the script itself implements quite some logic. Wouldn't it be more maintainable to implement it python or something? It started small and kept growing. And I have at least one machine that is too slow and limited (a 486 with breathtaking 20 MBs of RAM and a similarly breathtaking 2 GB harddisk) for Python to be installed on it (I've tried --- there is not enough space on the disk). My starting point was: Why can't mplayer recognize a URL as a playlist if that is the case? Then I started analysing the URLs given for different streams and built the first part of the script. The second part of the script resulted from my dissatisfaction about having to run to the machine whenever a stream was interrupted. Now the only problem left is the example I sent (CBC Radio 3), because this stream sometimes gets garbled and mplayer neither recovers nor stops completely --- so I still have to run to the machine sometimes, but now pressing return is enough to end mplayer so the script can restart it. With all other streams, the script works well (if the stream exists at all). - do you intend to continue maintaining it, respond to bug reports and enhance it with possible feature requests? - have you considered submitting it for the upstream TOOLS/ directory? I do and would like to offer it to the public if you think it's worthwhile. How can I register as a developer? Kind regards, Axel BTW, we could continue this in German if it's your first language, too. -BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE- Version: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iEYEARECAAYFAkn9dTIACgkQMiDYPOQNapHDLACeNJzEcfTvFq3Rm5yTUuJKre7R FGUAoL7v3r/G7lM3jKYvnsw9GCXYS6ut =Ebch -END PGP SIGNATURE- #!/bin/sh TERMINAL=`tty | sed s-/dev/--` if test $* = then #WINDOWTITLE=$USER using `basename $SHELL` on $HOSTNAME's $TERMINAL @ $PWD WINDOWTITLE=$HOSTNAME with $USER on $TERMINAL @ $PWD else WINDOWTITLE=$* fi if test $TERM = xterm -o $TERM = rxvt then #echo Setting window title to \$WINDOWTITLE\. echo -ne \033]0;$WINDOWTITLE\007 else # echo No known XTERM-like terminal. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Thanks for the tips. What if I would like to turn a few of my scripts into a Debian package to become part of the distribution? How do I become part of the Debian team? I know the official website tells you to write to two existing developers --- I did but I have not received any reply. I've tried to summarize it at http://wiki.debian.org/DebianMultimedia/FAQ In short: subscribe to the pkg-multimedia mailing list, help out with exsting bugs, send patches, and you'll be granted commit access. Thank you. I'll follow these steps and also submit my scripts to the developers' list; it may take some time, though, as I've told you. I know the official website tells you to write to two existing developers --- I did but I have not received any reply. I'm sorry to hear that. Have you approached them in private or on a public mailing list? Can you provide references to some public webarchive? I took their e-mail addresses from the Debian website and wrote to them, as suggested on the website. I never received an error message. I'll revert to doing my searches with apt-cache. One reason for this was my confusion in the midst of all those upgrade problems. Can you give me any advice on who to turn to concerning Java and G Numeric code not working any more? Sorry for bothering you and thank you for your quick reaction.
