2012-12-31 Thread jaakov jaakov

gnome might work better without the vga=780 bit in your cmdline.
It does not, independently on which of two kernels
- 3.2.0-4-amd64, version 3.2.35-2 (with boot_delay=100 to be able to boot with a higher probability)

- 3.6-trunk-amd64, version 3.6.9-1~experimental.1 (boots most often without any
tricks)
is booted.

Bug#689420: linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64, version 3.2.35-2 sometimes succeeds booting

2012-12-29 Thread jaakov jaakov

Just keeping a log of what happens while kernels get updated.

linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64, version 3.2.35-2, sometimes succeeds booting. Dmesg
(attached) still shows some errors and gnome still starts in fail-safe mode
despite an installed firmware-linux-nonfree.

Bug#694056: Pressing the numlock key makes HDD LED blink shortly

2012-11-23 Thread jaakov jaakov

Package: gnome
Version: 1:3.4+6
Severity: normal

How to reproduce:

If your Numlock led is lighted:
1. Press the Numlock key.
2. Release the Numlock key, observing that the HDD LED flashes (on and off)
shortly, for less than 1/3 s.

If your Numlock key is not lighted:
1. Press the Numlock key, observing that the HDD LED flashes (on and off)
shortly, for less than 1/3 s.
2. Release the Numlock key.

The used computer is Dell Precision M 6700.

I expect that such an innocent action as switching the Numlock state should not
incur unnecessary disk activity or, even worse, HDD LED blinking without such
an activity.

2012-11-23 Thread jaakov jaakov

You mean you expect that your setting is not saved?

I would expect the opposite.

You have all the time in the world to wait with saving until logout. And if
your system crashes before logout, you have much more serious problems than the
unsaved numlock state.

Bug#689420: A succeeding boot with errors

2012-11-14 Thread jaakov jaakov

Upon inserting a delay I (unexpectedly pleasantly) got a succeeding boot. Three
log files (/var/log/boot, /var/log/dmesg, /var/log/messages) are attached;
dmesg shows diverse errors which were (luckily) not critical for this startup.

2012-11-04 Thread jaakov jaakov

Hi Ben:

I appreciate your debugging attempts a lot.
Unfortunately I have no idea about the kernel internals like
cache_alloc_refill().

I'm sending you two fotos from different boot attempts in hope that this will
give you more information.
One (BUG_acpi_off.jpg) shows the first serious error message, here, displaying
of BUG from snd_hda_codec_hdmi (if I recollect correctly, booted with acpi=off).
Another (second127.jpg) shows the state at second 127 just after Foto-0171 but
before Foto-0172 (booted without acpi=off, without quiet, and with
boot_delay=300)
I am sorry for the quality, but you can recongnize, e.g., someone saying
SECURITY FREEZE LOCK and other strange messages.

kernel.sysrq = 1

This did not change anything: On pressing the key combination I still get the
message that the operation is disabled.

Can you tell me the model of laptop you are using?

DELL Precision M 6700. There is a rumour that RHEL was running on such laptops.
I have no idea about the kernel they were using.

Can you also test Linux 3.6.6 when it is available (it should be in
experimental in a few days).

Ok, I'll wait for 3.6.6.

Thank you for a fast reply.

Can you provide a kernel log for a successful boot (/var/log/dmesg.log)?

Attached.

 'grave' would mean the package is broken for most users, which it isn't.

The official description of grave from
http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer.html
does not say for whom the package is supposed to be broken or unusable:
grave makes the package in question unusable or mostly so, or causes data loss, or
introduces a security hole allowing access to the accounts of users who use the
package.
For me, the package is unusable without weird hacks before boot time.

Windows runs on the computer without problems and the computer is new, so a
hardware fault is unlikely. As soon as I run some testing program, I'll report
here again.

severity 689420 grave
thanks

Now the system does not boot even when acpi=off.
It always stops booting somewhere in the middle.
To make it sometimes (!) boot, one has, in addition to acpi=off, to make grub
wait more than the obligatory 4 seconds.
And even after that, some connected hardware does not work at all or does not
work properly: external modem, touchpad, touck stick.
This makes the package relatively useless. Thus, raising the severity.

Bug#598089: Really fixed?

2012-10-29 Thread jaakov jaakov

Dear maintainer:

Now you are saying that displaying a number is a UNIX/POSIX standard.
This did not show up in the discussion earlier and is news to me.
If displaying a number is really a standard, then I don't see why names should
be truncated instead.
I'm not opposing or favoring this or the other solution, I'm just curious.

Best regards,

Jaakov.

retitle 689416 Nonexistant files are asked for on Intel Centrino Ultimate-N

thanks

Well, now the files

firmware-iwlwifi_0.36_all.deb
iwlwifi-6000g2b-6.ucode

iwlwifi-6000-4.ucode
iwlwifi-6000g2a-5.ucode

are in the root directory of an additional USB stick and the installer seems to
find iwlwifi-6000-4.ucode.

However, as before, the installer still complaints about the missing
iwlwifi-6000-5.ucode

iwlwifi-6000-6.ucode

Actually, it turns out that despite complaints the wireless works.

The maintainer may modify the wording so that you can find the file easier, in
case one doesn't read doc and don't download firmware.tar.gz...

So downgrading severity.

I did all that. But I did not get that the installation could continue anyway.
And you did not get what file are exactly asked for.

Thus, upgrading severity.

driver (see bug 689416): only the iwlwifi-6000-4.ucode file was used.

After that, I went into the rescue mode from a boot medium (USB stick). From
there, I installed linux-image-3.2.0-4-amd64 onto the laptop and rebooted. The
laptop failed to boot with the new kernel either. The recovery modes are not
working any more either.

Now it is pretty reproducible that both current testing and unstable kernels
completely fail to work on (my variant of) Dell Precision M6700. Link:
http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=w08m6711model_id=precision-m6700c=del=des=bsdcs=debsdt1

Please repair the kernel.

Jaakov.

Bug#659772: Re: landscape sciposter + hyperref + latex + dvips = center-mirrored image

2012-07-12 Thread jaakov jaakov

Thanks, great! Let me notice that if you add setpagesize=false, the output is
ok, but additionally providing -t landscape to dvips makes the output wrong
again. Probably, plain users should not care of such details or be guessing. By
the way, why does hyperref have to set the page size by default?

If I get Heiko right, then, in high-level terms, another problem is the
ambiguity in the specification of the dvi and postscript format (at least) with
respect to the landscape or portrait format, as well as with respect to
rotation/mirroring.

Does everyone agree with this formulation?

Consider the following latex code:

\documentclass{article}
\usepackage{hyperref}
\usepackage[style=long3colheader]{glossaries}
\newglossaryentry{N}{name={N}, description={N}}
\begin{document}
$\gls{N}_{\gls{N}}$

Both occurencies of N are generated same size, which is incorrect.

When hyperref is commented out, the second occurence of N is generated
smaller, the way it should be for the lower index.

Please correct the packages.

I reject this kind of bug handling.

The documentation is really defective with respect to this issue.

Have a look at the euser entry. It doesnt say the length but it does

say it happens.

The restriction to 8 is nowhere mentioned in the man pages. This might
or might not be a defective program behavior, but it is a definite
defect in the documentation.

Moreover, the documentation line

width.

nowhere says what kind of width it is, so it's also a documentation
defect.

Bug#595694: openoffice impress displays fonts correctly in normal view and incorrectly in slide show

2010-09-05 Thread jaakov jaakov

Package: openoffice.org-impress
Version: 1:3.2.1-6
Severity: important

1. Create an empty presentation.
2. Choose the Centered Text layout.
3. Click the box and type into it:

a||b

where || is a symbol with code U+2551 which is inserted via the
Insert - Special Character ... menu.
4. Mark everything and set its font to Courier 10 Pitch.
5. Click outside the box two separate times to unmark the box.
6. Press F5 for Slide Show. Observe that the output is

   a||`

The same happens when many other fonts are chosen, say, Century
Schoolbook L or URW Bookman L.

Bug#595472: When the external microphone is turned on, the internal is still used instead

2010-09-04 Thread jaakov jaakov

Package: gnome-media
Version: 2.30.0-1
Severity: important

On the laptop Lenovo X201, when an external microphone is plugged in,
the sound

is still recorded by the internal one.

The external microphone should record exactly at times it is plugged
into the
laptop or the docking station. If the external microphone is not plugged
into

the laptop or the docking station, the internal should record.
