you, either by NMUing the package or by providing full patches? Or
should we just stay away from that package?

 You should stay away, really.

In addition to being non-free, there are two additional reasons why I
think this should not be done, as it would be a complete waste of time:

 a) It is likely that pine will eventually be replaced by alpine
 (once alpine is mature enough).

 b) There should be a mta-base package on which packages like this
may depend, so that we do not duplicate the same debconf questions
about /etc/mailname and /etc/news/server over and over again
in every package managing those files.

The i18n support in all debconf-using packages being a release goal for
Lenny (http://release.debian.org/lenny-goals.txt), I'm raising the
severity to important.

In the case of pine, there are 3 different ways to fix the package,
depending on what comes first:
* Lenny is released: the switch must be done long enough before to give
time to translators to translate the package.
* A mta-base package is created: pine-tracker/note must be switched to
po-debconf (or moved to a News.Debian file, as it is really close to a
debconf abuse). The two other templates will then be removed.
* alpine replaces pine: this bug will be closed together with other
  pine's bugs.

Cheers,

If you need additional help to do this switch, do not hesitate to ask me
or to ask on debian-i18n.

Hmm, what if I consider that pine, being a non-free package, does not
deserve the same level of support of the other packages in main?

Does it deserve a lower level than the minimum expected?

Some people think non-free does not deserve any support at all.

I support pine only partially, so I have added debconf stuff to

I support pine only partially, so I have added debconf stuff to
allow for unattented installs, but that's all.
