downloading a pdf served by lighttpd stalls when client is IE+acrobat.

For what versions of IE and Acrobat?

Sounds like this should be fixed in those two, not in Lighttpd.

Nice try :)

The bug has been around for 5 years or more, apache2 is providing a fix, too :
http://httpd.apache.org/docs/2.0/misc/known_client_problems.html#byterange-requests

I reproduce the bug on winxp IE8 Adobe Reader 8.1.1

Isn't Reader 9 the latest version?
Got a link to the Adobe bug report?

i don't know.
Reader 8 update manager proposes 8.2.0, version which still has the bug.

That's the closest to a bug report i could find :

Correction : 8.2.4 is the latest of the 8.x, and is still affected.

We can't ask clients to update their software,
so even if it's fixed in a newer Reader, the problem will remain for years.
Apache, IIS are already working around that issue, why not lighttpd ?

It says: For Internet Explorer only, update to Adobe Acrobat 9.3/Adobe
Reader 9.3 or later.

Why not? Updating software should be standard operating procedure.

Because a proper fix is better.

Providing a workaround has been stupid in the first place, and it is
still stupid. Why support software which hasn't been able to fix a known
bug in more than 5 years?

Every time you start providing such workarounds it is your fault too if
the original bug doesn't get fixed!

It is clear for me that adobe reader is to blame here.

However, many people are unfortunately using it,
and even if a workaround is something that should be avoided,
it penalizes admins using lighttpd as a web server. My clients
are complaining that it does not work.
I just can't ask 1 visitors to upgrade their software, just
to view PDF documents, when any other website does not trigger
the bug. But that is not the issue here.

The workaround is fairly simple, so it might be at least documented
(if it already is, my apologies) or even better put in conf-available,
not enabled by default, with a self-explanatory name like
10-screw-adobe-reader.conf ?
That way an admin installing lighttpd on debian might get an idea of
the issue before it happens and make web clients unhappy.

It might be simple but it's not the ideal thing to do.
