Bug#279168: reportbug (sarge) fails to deliver report and does so silently

2005-11-25 Thread Johannes Wiedersich

This report appears to be a dupe of 316608 (fixed in sid) anyway...

No, opposed to 316608, here no mail is sent at all, all data typed into
the bug report is lost.

IMHO this should be fixed in sarge via a security update. Users of
debian trying to report bugs will be scared away, when their carefully
crafted bug reports are sent into nirvana without error message or
producing any kind of log-report.

Output of reportbug:
Sending message via /usr/sbin/sendmail...

Bug report submitted to: Debian Bug Tracking System

Copies sent to:
  Johannes Wiedersich [EMAIL PROTECTED]

If you want to provide additional information, please wait to receive
the bug tracking number via email;

you may then send any extra information to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (e.g. [EMAIL PROTECTED]), where n is the bug
number. Normally you will receive an

acknowledgement via email including the bug
report number within an hour.

No mail is actually sent anywhere, no output in log files, bug report
discarded.

User configuration:
editor: joe
MTA: exim4 via smarthost

sending mail via 'mail' works; smarthost is available.

Bug#279168: reportbug (sarge) fails to deliver report and does so silently

2005-11-25 Thread Chris Lawrence
Sounds like a bug in your MTA configuration, not reportbug. Can you
send any mail whatsoever from this box using /usr/sbin/sendmail or any
command-line mailers like mailx?

I strongly suspect a perusal of /var/log/mail.log will discover the problem.

Sorry for bothering you; there was indeed a configuration problem. As
far as the logs are concerned, I made the mistake of looking at
/var/log/mail.log (as you suggested later on).

The correct logs are found in /var/log/exim4/mainlog etc. I don't know
where I got the /var/log/mail.log from since I've always used exim4.

Thanks for the help!

Johannes
