The problem occurs regardless of whether one uses libsdl1.2-debian-alsa,
-esd or -pulseaudio. However, the workaround of using 8-bit samples
seems to only works when using SDL's ALSA backend, ie. esd/pulseaudio
have some problem(s) with 8-bit samples.

The bug occurs also with 1.2.512.dfsg-3, and only on amd64 (only tested
i386 and amd64). A workaround is to change audio sample size from 16-bit
to 8-bit in audio settings.
Bug 1781073 [1] in project's bug tracker sounds like similar, though the

I'm using fretsonfire on Ubuntu intrepid. When I play the correct
notes, I only hear the background track, and not the guitar track. When
I play incorrect notes, I do not hear either track. This happens both
with the included sectoid song pack
