Just wanted to report back, that with patches everything works again like it
should. Here is what a final /etc/grub.d/20_memtest86+ should look like:
#!/bin/sh
set -e
. /usr/lib/grub/grub-mkconfig_lib
if test -e /boot/memtest86+.bin ; then
MEMTESTPATH=$( make_system_path_relative_to_its_root

reassign -1 memtest86

Hi,
In the scripts supplied with memtest86+ and memtest86 for
/etc/grub.d, there are actually three distinct problems to be found:
1. They source the deprecated update-grub_lib instead of
Package: grub-pc
Version: 1.96+20090725-1
Severity: normal
After moving to grub-pc, memtest86+ does not launch. I tried patch from
bug report #539907 but it still does not launch: 'error: file not found'.
But the patch from #539907 does fix this:
Warning: update-grub_lib is deprecated use
