Bug#765109: fglrx-driver: Black screen after xorg startup
Please try again with the 15.12 driver that is now available in unstable, testing, and jessie-backports. Or the 15.9 driver that is now in jessie. Thanks. Andreas
Bug#765109: fglrx-driver: Black screen after xorg startup
Dear maintainers, I have the same problem here. 2 cards AMD R285X in my PC, black screen after installing the 14.9 fglrx drivers from jessie (the open source default driver works, but I need OpenCl acceleration from fglrx). I installed the 14.12 drivers from experimental, got the same result. The radeon module is blacklisted properly. I can't see what's wrong. The only suspicious things i can find in the xorg logs are messages like : [14.919] ukiOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device) [14.919] ukiOpenDevice: open result is -1, (No such device) [14.919] ukiOpenDevice: Open failed but the initialization seems to continue and ends with these lines: [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): EDID vendor ACI, prod id 6628 [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Using EDID range info for horizontal sync [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Using EDID range info for vertical refresh [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Printing DDC gathered Modelines: [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 1366x768x0.0 85.50 1366 1436 1579 1792 768 771 774 798 +hsync +vsync (47.7 kHz eP) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 800x600x0.0 40.00 800 840 968 1056 600 601 605 628 +hsync +vsync (37.9 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 800x600x0.0 36.00 800 824 896 1024 600 601 603 625 +hsync +vsync (35.2 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 640x480x0.0 31.50 640 656 720 840 480 481 484 500 -hsync -vsync (37.5 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 640x480x0.0 31.50 640 664 704 832 480 489 492 520 -hsync -vsync (37.9 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 640x480x0.0 25.18 640 656 752 800 480 490 492 525 -hsync -vsync (31.5 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 720x400x0.0 28.32 720 738 846 900 400 412 414 449 -hsync +vsync (31.5 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 1280x1024x0.0 135.00 1280 1296 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +hsync +vsync (80.0 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 1024x768x0.0 75.00 1024 1048 1184 1328 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync (56.5 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 1024x768x0.0 65.00 1024 1048 1184 1344 768 771 777 806 -hsync -vsync (48.4 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 800x600x0.0 49.50 800 816 896 1056 600 601 604 625 +hsync +vsync (46.9 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 800x600x0.0 50.00 800 856 976 1040 600 637 643 666 +hsync +vsync (48.1 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 1152x864x0.0 108.00 1152 1216 1344 1600 864 865 868 900 +hsync +vsync (67.5 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 1280x960x0.0 108.00 1280 1376 1488 1800 960 961 964 1000 +hsync +vsync (60.0 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 1280x800x0.0 83.50 1280 1352 1480 1680 800 803 809 831 -hsync +vsync (49.7 kHz e) [21.794] (II) fglrx(0): Modeline 1280x720x60.0 74.48 1280 1336 1472 1664 720 721 724 746 -hsync +vsync (44.8 kHz e) Currently, this means my server has just gone as useful as a brick. Bug#765109: fglrx-driver: Black screen after xorg startup
Hello all, and also, Happy New Year ! I believe I have the same issue and I also have hybrid graphics. On boot, when using fglrx display drivers, gdm shows a black screen (when I should have the login screen). I have no error in /var/log/Xorg.0.log (except a segmentation fault when I stop gdm). As I can run graphical hardware accelerated applications using a dedicated Xorg instance, I think the problem is gdm related. In fact I think your bug (and mine) is a duplicate of #745901 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=745901. Mathieu, can you run the following tests ? Using fglrx driver, gdm not running, run this command from a random tty as a normal user (= not root) : /usr/bin/xinit /usr/bin/chromium Instead of chromium, you can try other graphical application. I was succesfull with chromium, steam (and even running games) and kodi (=xbmc). This test should work correctly. Then try running the same test with a gnome application which depends on clutter (like totem). /usr/bin/xinit /usr/bin/totem If it gives you the following error, then your bug, is a duplicate of #745901 https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=745901. (gnome-shell:3461): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_strsplit: assertion 'string != NULL' failed (gnome-shell:3461): Clutter-CRITICAL **: Unable to initialize Clutter: The OpenGL version could not be determined Erreur du gestionnaire de fenêtres : Unable to initialize Clutter. Bug#765109: fglrx-driver: Black screen after xorg startup
I thought the blacklist of radeon was done in /etc/modprobe.d/ by fglrx driver installation .. I will retry and check ;) Maybe my problem is also that I don't success in disabling hybrid graphic (it's unchecked in BIOS, but ... ), so the i915 intel vga driver is also used. :( -- --- Mathieu POURCEL Technicien systèmes et réseaux LEGOS - UMR 5566 Bureau 41 / D033 Observatoire Midi-Pyrénées 14, avenue Edouard Belin 31400 Toulouse tel : : +33 (0)5 61 33 29 41 fax : : +33 (0)5 61 25 32 05 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to debian-bugs-dist-requ...@lists.debian.org with a subject of unsubscribe. You need to blacklist the radeon driver, so that fglrx is loaded instead.

On Debian Jessie, I have the exact same issue with fglrx_dri.so not found in the above mentioned locations. Result is a blank screen. Manual symlinking gets rid of the EE messages in Xorg.0.log, but blank screen remains. I'm forced to go back to Intel CPU graphics. The next path in the list is /usr/lib/dri and the file is symlinked there.
