Bug#931225: Please make Classic style the default

2023-11-02 Thread Ian Jackson
Four and half years ago I reported what were then already longstanding
and severe bugs in the custom theme we use as the default theme for
the Debian wiki.

I also requested that the default be changed to the "Classic" theme
(which as I understand it is provided by upstream), pending a fix to
those bugs in our own theme.

As I wrote three years ago

> If those who really dislike the Classic theme find it too ugly, then
> I think it would be reasonable to expect those people to maintain

There has been no progress. No-one authoritative has given the
go-ahead, and said that this change should be made. But, neither has
anyone authoritative vetoed it.

It appears that no-one with the relevant authority is interested in
this problem. That's fine; I'm not demanding that anyone do work that
they're not interested in.

However, I wish this problem to be unblocked. It doesn't seem like
simply changing the default will be very difficult. So:

I suspect that this default is part of the MoinMoin configuration
files, which we have perhaps modifed. Or, that it is stored in the
MoinMoin database. It will probably be obvious from insepcting the
running system where this change has been made.

In either case, I believe DSA would be able to either change the
default themselves, or grant me sufficient technical privilege to make
the change myself.

If I don't hear to the contrary within (say) 28 days, I will ask DSA
to make "Classic" the default theme on wiki.debian.org, or to enable
me to make that change myself.

Thanks,
Ian.

Bug#931225: Please make Classic style the default

Hi. I filed this bug about 18 months ago. Guillem wrote

Thanks to Guillem for these illuminating comments.

Unfortunately, evidently no-one in the past year and a half has had
the effort and attention to fix our custom theme. Working on the
custom theme is not a thing that I have the effort or inclination to
do.

If those who really dislike the Classic theme find it too ugly, then I
think it would be reasonable to expect those people to maintain that
theme. That includes fixing serious defects in a reasonable time.

So I think the right decision would be to change the default theme to
Classic, until the bugs in the custom theme are fixed.

As I say, the formatting bugs in the current theme are very severe.

Sorry,
Ian.

Ah! This has been bothering me for so long, and I was not aware it was
due to the Debian specific theming. Thanks! Although I tried the
Classic theme and it was too ugly for my taste, the Modern one looked
slightly better though, which is what I've switched to for now. :)

This feels a bit too drastic, but I fully understand the sentiment.

I assume a MR for the CSS as proposed in the referenced bug might help
move this, but I notice the theming is not included in the git repo at
, and there's a MR
about that already too, which would need to be solved first
. :)

Thanks,
Guillem

The default style has two bugs, at least one of which is IMO fairly
serious and has gone unfixed for 2 years now:
  | #864925 wiki.debian.org: gridlines in tables

The Classic style does not have these bugs. I have been using it as
my personal style for some time and I have not noticed any
misrendering.

In the interests of correctness and readability of tables, at least,
could the default style be changed (at least until the newer style is
fixed) ?

Thanks,
Ian.
