I was initially using gnome-cups-manager -- it would freeze for over 15
minutes with cups-driverd and cupsys eating 100% CPU, before I even got
to see a list of printers. I did also try the web interface -- it did

I can reproduce this problem. If you remove hal, acpid can start
without problems. It seems if hald starts after acpid, it works (or at
least starts cleanly). But hald is started by udev, so it's hard to
control that order sensibly.

jackd, only the display of the sample rate within the qjackctl GUI. You
can see this in the attached screenshot, where jackd is running at 44100
