Bug#438513: xemacs21-nomule: ~/.bbdb disappears
Tatsuya, thank you again for all your help. I would have been in considerable difficulty without your help. Tatsuya == Tatsuya Kinoshita Re: Bug#438513: xemacs21-nomule: ~/.bbdb disappears Mon, 20 Aug 2007 23:25:29 +0900 (JST) Tatsuya I should suggest that making a backup of user files which Tatsuya might be caused a -mule/-nomule problem when migrating to Tatsuya -mule from -nomule. The original problem occurred when upgrading xemacs21 21.4.20-1.1 - 21.4.20-2, not when migrating from -nomule to -mule. In short, after the upgrade, bbdb disappeared from xemacs. After that, neither new installations of emacs21-mule nor emacs21 work properly with Gnus even without any user start-up files until corrupted data was removed from the ~/.newsrc.eld file. After I get caught up with my mail I will try to see if, in the light of this resolution, retracing some of the steps you suggested leads to a better indication of what might actually gone wrong. I will welcome suggestions, and I will get back the this here bug. Tatsuya I'm not interested in fixing this -nomule bug. I guess Tatsuya that this bug will be closed when xemacs21-nomule is Tatsuya removed from testing/unstable. If emacs21-mule is going away I have no further interest in this bug and I would agree that it should be closed. jam pgpOrgRRm0OQb.pgp Description: PGP signature

My attempts to find a reasonably simple way to follow your suggestions lead me to try trimming the last line, containing a multitude of funny characters, from my ~/.newsrc.eld file. After the trimming, Gnus (from the separate Debian package) atop XEmacs21 mule _just works_, so far, using my original ~/.xemacs/init.el and ~/.gnus files. My understanding is that the ~/.newsrc.eld file should remain untouched by human hands. Although it is a flat text file it is hardly readable by a human, at least not me. The ~/.newsrc.eld saved shortly after starting Gnus has a new last line with only a few funny characters most different than most in a copy I had saved. Using the procedure you suggested to reinstall xemacs-mule appears to change nothing from the last attempt. No .elc files were left in /usr/share/xemacs21/site-lisp/ after the big remove. I do not use emacs and so removed emacs21. After seeing no change I installed it again. So far Gnus atop emacs has not completed its initialization. In case that may be because the Gnusae are fighting over a file I will, after sending this, kill this XEmacs then restart emacs and see if that Gnus acts differently. Thank you again. First I had to eliminate references to w3m in my ~/.gnus file to get around 'cannot load file'. Then I get issues with Invalid byte code: reference 23 to constants array out of range 0, 15 Unknown charset: iso8859-1 Unknown charset: utf-8 with the result that I cannot read any mail. Co-installing -mule and -nomule is problematic, because *.elc file is not compatible. To re-byte-compile, please remove all xemacs* packages and then install xemacs21-mule. -- Tatsuya Kinoshita pgpHQMk0swzQ3.pgp Description: PGP signature

I've done the cleanout and install xemacs-mule as sugested but when I I try to enter a mail group (folder) I get the same Invalid byte code: reference 23 to constants array out of range 0, 15 as before. This is with a reinstall of Gnus version 'No Gnus v0.6. What to do now? I need my mail reader back. jam pgpBlUOrEWDbn.pgp Description: PGP signature
