Bug#438513: xemacs21-nomule: ~/.bbdb disappears

Tatsuya, thank you again for all your help. I would have been in
considerable difficulty without your help.

 Re: Bug#438513: xemacs21-nomule: ~/.bbdb disappears

Tatsuya I should suggest that making a backup of user files which
Tatsuya might be caused a -mule/-nomule problem when migrating to
Tatsuya -mule from -nomule.

The original problem occurred when upgrading xemacs21 21.4.20-1.1 -
21.4.20-2, not when migrating from -nomule to -mule.

In short, after the upgrade, bbdb disappeared from xemacs. After
that, neither new installations of emacs21-mule nor emacs21 work
properly with Gnus even without any user start-up files until
corrupted data was removed from the ~/.newsrc.eld file.

After I get caught up with my mail I will try to see if, in the
light of this resolution, retracing some of the steps you
suggested leads to a better indication of what might actually
gone wrong. I will welcome suggestions, and I will get back
 the this here bug.

Tatsuya I'm not interested in fixing this -nomule bug. I guess
Tatsuya that this bug will be closed when xemacs21-nomule is
Tatsuya removed from testing/unstable.

If emacs21-mule is going away I have no further interest in this bug
and I would agree that it should be closed.

My attempts to find a reasonably simple way to follow your suggestions
lead me to try trimming the last line, containing a multitude of
funny characters, from my ~/.newsrc.eld file. After the trimming,
Gnus (from the separate Debian package) atop XEmacs21 mule _just
works_, so far, using my original ~/.xemacs/init.el and ~/.gnus files.

My understanding is that the ~/.newsrc.eld file should remain
untouched by human hands. Although it is a flat text file it is
hardly readable by a human, at least not me. The ~/.newsrc.eld saved
shortly after starting Gnus has a new last line with only a few funny
characters most different than most in a copy I had saved.

One might guess the apparent corruption of the ~/.newsrc.eld might
stem from the original -mule/-nomule issue you suspected from the

Tatsuya Hmm, if `M-: (load pgg-parse.elc) RET' with
Tatsuya xemacs21-mule doesn't cause an error of pgg-parse-crc24,
Tatsuya it should not be a -mule/-nomule issue of the gnus
Tatsuya package.

Tatsuya Please try:

Tatsuya - check whether old *.elc files remain in /usr/local/ and
Tatsuya so on.
Tatsuya - remove the gnus package to use xemacs21-basesupport's
Tatsuya Gnus.
Tatsuya - use a minimum setting for your init files, ~/.xemacs/*,

Hmm, just loading gnus-sum.elc does not cause the problem.

However, I've found that pgg-parse.elc was an problematic file
absolutely. If pgg-parse.elc is compiled with xemacs21-nomule,
(load pgg-parse.elc) causes an error void-variable pgg-parse-crc24
on xemacs21-mule. Please check it.

If pgg-parse.elc is compiled with xemacs21-nomule, you missed
xemacs21-mule reinstallation.

Try the following procedure to reinstall xemacs21-mule:

$ apt-get install emacs21
  - To keep emacsen for add-on pacakges.

$ apt-get remove xemacs21-nomule xemacs21-mule xemacs21-mule-canna-wnn
xemacs21-gnome-mule xemacs21-gnome-mule-canna-wnn xemacs21-gnome-nomule
  - Remove all xemacs21* packages.
  - Please make a note of removed but needed packages.
  - Due to packages' bug, if packages' *.elc files remain in
/usr/share/xemacs21/site-lisp/*, remove them by hand.

$ apt-get install xemacs21-mule
  - And also install removed but needed packages.
  - If installation fails, please check whether
`update-alternatives --display xemacs21' points to xemacs21-mule.

$ apt-get remove emacs21
  - If you don't use emacs21.

Using the procedure you suggested to reinstall xemacs-mule appears to
change nothing from the last attempt. No .elc files were left in
/usr/share/xemacs21/site-lisp/ after the big remove.

I do not use emacs and so removed emacs21. After seeing no change I
installed it again. So far Gnus atop emacs has not completed its
initialization. In case that may be because the Gnusae are fighting
over a file I will, after sending this, kill this XEmacs then restart
emacs and see if that Gnus acts differently.

Thank you again. I still have no reasonable mail reader working.

Bug#438513: xemacs21-nomule: ~/.bbdb disappears

2007-08-17 Thread John A. Martin
Package: xemacs21-nomule
Version: 21.4.20-2
Severity: important

When saving or accessing BBDB from Gnus, probably after a modification
to BBDB was made or attempted in the background, I get, in the
minibuffer, No such coding system: iso-2022-7bit and my ~/.bbdb file
has disappeared. This breaks Gnus operations involving BBDB including
`gnus-group-exit' and all bbdb commands giving the same message in the
minibuffer. Digging a bit I see:

No Gnus v0.6
Library is file /usr/share/xemacs21/site-lisp/gnus/gnus.elc
BBDB version 2.35 ($Date: 2007/02/23 20:24:09 $)

This problem definitely did not occur prior to upgrading xemacs21
21.4.20-1.1 - 21.4.20-2 on Aug 4.

Though I didn't know this problem, AFAICT that -nomule package is
problematic and not recommended, because the MULE feature is a
standard feature of Emacs. -nomule package causes an error when
the MULE feature is used.

The xemacs* package maintainer Makoto, will you intend to maintain
-nomule package for lenny? I hope that -nomule package will be removed.

Bug#438513: xemacs21-nomule: ~/.bbdb disappears

Simply doing 'aptitude -P install xemacs21-mule'
(xemacs21-mule_21.4.20-2_i386.deb) to try to isolate the problem was
 not much help.

First I had to eliminate references to w3m in my ~/.gnus file to get
around 'cannot load file'. Then I get issues with

Invalid byte code: reference 23 to constants array out of range 0, 15

   Unknown charset: iso8859-1

   Unknown charset: utf-8

with the result that I cannot read any mail.

Co-installing -mule and -nomule is problematic, because *.elc file
is not compatible. To re-byte-compile, please remove all xemacs*
packages and then install xemacs21-mule.

2007-08-17 Thread John A. Martin
I've done the cleanout and install xemacs-mule as sugested but when I
I try to enter a mail group (folder) I get the same

Invalid byte code: reference 23 to constants array out of range 0, 15

as before. This is with a reinstall of Gnus version 'No Gnus v0.6.

What to do now? I need my mail reader back.

Hmm, could you please track down the problematic file? To get a
backtrace, please evaluate (setq debug-on-error t).

Thanks,
