bit of what I guess is supposed to be the main screen, and then gnome
kicks in and notifies me the application quitted unexpectedly. strace
didn't give me anything useful, a lot of networking activity and it
looks like a normal exit from their (no SIGSEGV or something).

that 2.2 kernels will get dropped for Etch quite likely, and only
2.4/2.6 remain. But well, as you note, there's at least someone (you)
supporting it to remain in Debian, and that has always been enough
reason in Debian to keep a package.
