Bug#345910: gmpc FTBFS on all arches (except i386)

2006-01-04 Thread Jurij Smakov

Package: gmpc
Version: 0.12.0-1
Severity: serious
Justification: fails to build from source

Hi,

Latest gmpc upload fails to buils on all architectures (you can check the
build logs on buildd.debian.org). AFAICT, it fails to find the header
files supplied by libmpd-dev. libmpd-dev installs header files as

/usr/include/libmpd-0.01/libmpd/libmpd.h
/usr/include/libmpd-0.01/libmpd/libmpdclient.h
/usr/include/libmpd-0.01/libmpd/debug_printf.h

however gmpc looks for libmpd/libmpd.h, etc., and /usr/include/libmpd-0.01
is not in include path.

Best regards,

Bug#345823: apt: Key error at year turnover resembles security problem, and may represent one

 should not spread too worrysome errors at users while the archive can still

Not to contradict you, since my understanding of these issues is
strongly limited, but apt seems to think that it cannot validate the
archive?

Running: su -c apt-get upgrade

If understand that the whole release is what is signed, and that then
the urls in the release are therefore trusted (I assume with md5
checksum), then it seems APT does not beleive the release is signed with
the 2005 key, or does not know how to 'fall back' to the 2005 key.

After installing grub 0.97 and doing a simple setup the system is

When the system random garbage gets printed on the screen.

  Well, that's a release-critical bug, just of a class we don't spend much
  time chasing until close to release.

 Unfortunately the discussion about the freecdb package didn't attract
 my attention earlier, the release critical bug is resolved as invalid
 now.

And reopened. You have *not* addressed the issues contributing to this RC
bug:

- freecdb provides no shared library or static _pic library suitable for
  linking into other shared libraries, which is something we generally
  expect from library packages
- the only thing that sucks more than static-only libs for security support
  of a library is *bundled* static-only libs
- the author (and current maintainer) of freecdb says that this cdb
  implementation should be considered dead

1) and 2) suck, but it's 3) that makes this a serious bug AFAICT; you can
address 3) by becoming the new maintainer, of course, but in that case I
would expect that you would actually, er, *maintain* it, for instance by
providing a _pic.a library instead of dismissing the bug as a problem in
vpopmail's packaging.

Bug#345823: apt: Key error at year turnover resembles security problem, and may represent one

2006-01-04 Thread Edward Buck
I came across the same error this morning. The part that was rather
frustrating is that I had no idea where to find the new key. Only by
returning to the bug report (where Joey H provided a link) was I able to
find it.

http://ftp-master.debian.org/ziyi_key_2006.asc

Most users do not think to check ftp-master.

It would be nice to update the following places (where I looked for the
new key and found none):

* http://www.debian.org/security/faq

There's a link to the old key under Q: How can I check the integrity of
packages?

* keyring.debian.org

I tried to download the new key from the above key server using the key
id and found none.

Also, 'apt-key update' gives one the impression that the problem is
easily fixable but it leads to disappointment.

# apt-key update
ERROR: Can't find the archive-keyring
Is the debian-keyring package installed?

After installing debian-keyring, the same error occurs (presumably
because of changed filenames?). I suspect the new public key is not in
the debian-keyring package anyway.

Ed

 Not to contradict you, since my understanding of these issues is

I know, I said should, because I believe apt should deal with the
multiple signatures correctly, instead of the current behaviour of (it
seems) only looking at the last one and/or requiring all signatures to
verify.

Apt needs to be satisfied with just at least one of the multiple
signatures verifying, so that there can be turnover periods, and for
example third party repositories can have multiple signatures too, for
certain circumstances.

Yes. It is more than only a bit disappointing, that this bug is still
unfixed. There are at least 6 or 7 open bugs reports (the oldest with an

So a question to the apt and debian-keyring maintainers: What about

- fixing apt-key to not try to read non-existing keyrings and instead
read debian-role-keys.gpg

Bug#345949: initramfs-tools: mkinitramfs does not copy klibc library

2006-01-04 Thread Arjan Oosting
Package: initramfs-tools
Version: 0.47.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi,

After upgrade my system and installing a new kernel my system would fail while
booting because the initramfs image was missing the klibc library.
The last version of libklibc has moved the library from /usr/lib/klibc/lib to
/lib and mkinitramfs does not look there.
Attached is a patch which fixes this.

 downgrading severity as kernel-package doesn't yet build with debsums.

 can you please tell how you hooked debsums into your image?
 perhaps you are invoking debsums in apt's post install hook?
 or in the kernels post install hook?

Bug#345864: problems with hdparm and udev during boot

On 1/4/06, Stephen Gran [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

 This seems a bit inflated to me - do you actually lose data, or is it
 just that you heard someone with similar error mesages lost data?

Ok, my mistake. Sorry.

  During boot I see errors in dmesg. I've done little investigation
  and found that is not problem with my hard drive, but only with
  hdparm which is starting by udev.
  Errors look like that and I find them only at start of udev:

  hda: dma_intr: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
  ide: failed opcode was: unknown
  hda: set_drive_speed_status: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete
  DataRequest }

 This means that you asked hdparm to do something that the kernel and
 your hardware couldn't agree to do.

No way. When I manually apply my settings to hdparm every thing is ok.

  When I comment out options of hdparm in /etc/hdparm.conf errors just
  disappeared.

 Can you send me the output of lspci, the relevant ide detection lines from
 dmesg, uname -a output, and the contents of the hdparm.conf corresponding
 to hda?

Bug#345964: libopenal0: openal changed API without adjusting versioning

2006-01-04 Thread Gerfried Fuchs
Package: libopenal0
Version: 0.2005080600-2.1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Hi!

[I tried to contact you via private mail, but I don't answer
 challenge/response messages (and consider them inappropriate for a
 Package Maintainer address, it's blocking out users)]

 Anyway, here is the problem layed out again: I checked the diff between
the openal dev package in stable and unstable, and found myself
confrontated with quite a huge diff. Given that the library still sets
its versioning as being at the same ABI/API level this is a grave
problem because partly upgrades of either the library or packages
compiled against the library will break.

 Please read up on the libtool versioning and advice the upstream
developers carefully about such things, use a -release version (which
gets incorporated directly into the filename) or provide only the
library for static linking.

 Either way, the package in its current state isn't practical for a
release. I tried to address you privately first, but given to the
outlined reason from above it wasn't possible to me.

 So long,
Alfie

Bug#345864: problems with hdparm and udev during boot

2006-01-04 Thread Stephen Gran
This one time, at band camp, Remigiusz ??wic said:
   Severity: grave

  This seems a bit inflated to me - do you actually lose data, or is it
  just that you heard someone with similar error mesages lost data?

 Ok, my mistake. Sorry.

No problem. Just pointing it out.

   During boot I see errors in dmesg. I've done little investigation
   and found that is not problem with my hard drive, but only with
   hdparm which is starting by udev.
   Errors look like that and I find them only at start of udev:

   hda: dma_intr: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
   ide: failed opcode was: unknown
   hda: set_drive_speed_status: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete
   DataRequest }

  This means that you asked hdparm to do something that the kernel and
  your hardware couldn't agree to do.

 No way. When I manually apply my settings to hdparm every thing is ok.

Hrm, interesting. Does that mean it's not an hdparm problem, but a race
condition in udev or something? I am going to cc: the udev maintainer
on this to see what he thinks.

Marco, can you take a look at
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=345864 and see what you
think?

Unfortunately 3.8.2005-12-06-2 doesn't fix the problem. libcapi20-3 is
still missing the so files.

 Please test your package more thoroughly before uploading as this is not
 the first time that something like this happens and very unpleasant for
 a dial-up user if you don't have an old copy of libcapi20-3.

 I agree that it's unpleasant, but that's why it's called unstable, by
 running that you run the risk of breakage. May I suggest using
 testing, which won't have the most obvious bugs...

Well, I know how to fix such problems. I'm an experienced Debian user
and also maintain packages for Debian. That's why I would expect at
least the minimum of testing before a package is uploaded. unstable is
no excuse for uploading non working packages.
I also know that I takes time to maintain a package and you shouldn't
consider this as a personal offense. I do appreciate everyones work for
Debian.

 Additionally, isdnutils is rather large, and maintaining it has become a
 team effort (although I confess I need to get a bit more involved...)
 Feel free to help ;-)

I actually sent you some ideas/files (making capi devices hotpluggable)
but never heard back from you.

Cheers,
Michael

won't do an NMU. I know the package builds, and lintian and linda
don't
give any errors/warnings related to my changes, but I don't know if
the

package as built my me works, since I don't have an automounter setup
and I don't want to build one just for this package.

I hope this is useful. Happy hacking.

Very - I was planning to do this in the next day or so anyway, and
your patch has saved me most of the effort. Thanks Lars. :-)

I don't doubt that there are more vulnerabilities lurking in

Bug#345436: xlibs: Keyboard not working properly after upgrade to 6.9.0.dfsg.1-1

2006-01-04 Thread Francois LEIBER
i have exactly the same problem (among which maj, alt and alt-gr keys
not working, as you can see) after upgrading, and a few hours of testing
to solve it changed nothing.
it got even worse when after changing xorg.conf, gnome would freeze
while loading, and since ctrl+alt+f1 wasn't working any more, i had to
boot on a knoppix to access my computer in command line.

other symptoms include del keys not working under gnome

i joined my xorg.conf and xorg.log.

i was so happy to swith to xorg 6.9, but unfortunately this issue is
preventing me from programing, so i'll be happy to find a way to fix it ;)

Bug#346013: mozilla: build failure in extensions/p3p

2006-01-04 Thread Teemu Ikonen
Package: mozilla
Version: 1.7.12-1
Severity: serious
Tags: patch
Justification: no longer builds from source

The p3p extension in mozilla fails to build due to faulty Makefile.in, at
least on my mixed etch / sid system. The attached patch fixes this, when
dropped to debian/patches (although the resulting binary segfaults
immediately, sigh).

Bug#345931: grub 0.97 doesn't work on several machines

2006-01-04 Thread Jason Thomas
Hi,

Please check your menu.lst for a splashimage line. If one or more exists
comment them out and try to boot again.

How where the menu.lst files created?

You could also try pressing 'c' for the command line interface, when the
random garbage is on the screen. But I've no idea if that will work.

I have seen this problem occurs when the splashimage directive points to
a nonexistant file.

Bug#346028: linux-2.6: Hangs while attempting to purge

2006-01-04 Thread Nathanael Nerode
Package: linux-2.6
Severity: serious
Justification: Won't uninstall cleanly

It hangs on this line of the postrm script:

my $ret = purge();

I can get it to work by deleting this line. Perhaps this is because a
debconf routine is being called after stop has been called? I don't know,
but anyway it's a serious bug.

This bug appears in linux-image-2.6.14-2-686 and linux-image-2.6.15-1-686,
and I assume in other flavours as well.

Bug#344481: Mysterious crash in php4-rrdtool

2006-01-04 Thread Artur R. Czechowski
On Thu, Dec 22, 2005 at 10:21:52PM -0800, Steve Langasek wrote:
 I'd rather see some analysis to show where the bug actually belongs instead
 of guessing and reassigning.
Well, some analysis you asked for. I use glibc-2.3.5-11 with libc6-dbg
installed.

export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/debug
gdb /usr/sbin/apache
br _getopt_internal_r (it is called from getopt_long, here is the logic)
r -X
(breakpoint activated some times due to apache parameters)
I run the script calling rrd_graph and I'm inside:

#0  _getopt_internal_r (argc=22, argv=0x8141b78,
optstring=0xb78dcb10
s:e:x:y:v:w:h:iu:l:rb:oc:n:m:t:f:a:I:zgjFYAMEX:L:S:T:NR:B:,
longopts=0xb78f1a20, longind=0xbf81f324, long_only=0, d=0xb7d54400)
at getopt.c:398

I set display for following expressions: argv[d-optind], d-optind,
d-optarg, optarg.

Stepping by next until getopt.c:451.

Some iteration of:
  while (d-optind  argc  NONOPTION_P)
d-optind++;
and I have:
d-optind = 2
d-optarg = 0x0
optarg=0x0
argv[d-optind] = 0x8141be4 --start

Some steps inside the code. And, after getopt.c:679:
d-optarg = argv[d-optind++];
I have:
3: d-optarg = 0x8141bfc -2d
2: d-optind = 4
1: argv[d-optind] = 0x8141c14 --x-grid

So far it's OK.
Still stepping.

Back to:
_getopt_internal (argc=22, argv=0x8141b78,
optstring=0xb7928b10
s:e:x:y:v:w:h:iu:l:rb:oc:n:m:t:f:a:I:zgjFYAMEX:L:S:T:NR:B:,
longopts=0xb793da20, longind=0xbfa6a7c4, long_only=0) at getopt.c:1169

There are three lines:
  optind = getopt_data.optind;
  optarg = getopt_data.optarg;
  optopt = getopt_data.optopt;

After executing those lines I have:

(gdb) print getopt_data.optind
$1 = 4
(gdb) print getopt_data.optarg
$2 = 0x8141bfc -2d

and (sic!):
(gdb) print optind
$4 = 4
(gdb) print optarg
$5 = 0x0

So, the question is: why the assignment in getopt.c:1170:
  optarg = getopt_data.optarg;
does not work?

I would like to remind you that getopt_long from libc works correctly
(details in this buglog) in most cases. But combination of apache, php4,
rrdtool and php4-rrdtool makes it unworking.

Regards
Artur

Bug#345823: apt: Key error at year turnover resembles security problem, and may represent one

2006-01-04 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I use aptitude and I'm sure I don't know all the ins and outs here. But I do
have a suggestion for your consideration:

Stop signing the archives with the 2006 key for now. That will allow those who
have been using the 2005 key to continue getting updates.

After you have your fixes in place -- and the users have updated their systems
with those fixes -- then you can add the 2006 key back in for archive-signing
purposes. Maybe you would wait until Feb 1 to start using the 2006 key, for the
sake of those who don't update their systems daily. Again, I admittedly don't
know all of the ramifications.

I hope that you will, as a part of your fixes, enable users' copies of
apt/keyrings to automatically be updated to use the 2006 key based on trust of
the 2005 key which they are already using. That would be good for those who
don't know about http://ftp-master.debian.org/ziyi_key_2006.asc.

Thank you for considering these possibilities.

For me, i have provided information in bug #344767, as i explained in

This issue should have been fixed in linux-image-2.6.15-1-686 though, so we

These header files aren't found because their respective directories
are not included in the include path. The directories aren't in the
include path because vte.pc does not include the respective packages
in the Requires field.

I'm not sure what to do with the pango packages, but moving glib-2.0,
gtk-2.0 = 2.2, pangoxft = 1.1.0, and pangox to the Requires field
fixed the problem.

Bug#346028: linux-2.6: Hangs while attempting to purge

2006-01-04 Thread Cesare Leonardi

Cesare Leonardi wrote:
I haven't tested 2.6.15 because it isn't available in my mirror yet. But
the Nathanael posts tell us that the problem is still present in the
latest kernel.

As soon as it will be available on the mirror i use, i'll test 2.6.15.

Ok, 2.6.15 is arrived.
I've tryed to install linux-image-2.6.15-1-486 (version 2.6.15-1), then
to purge it and the operation failed. But now, it doesn't hang as stated
in the bug reports, but fails with an error:

But since the 486 flavour is a new entry, i've also tryed
linux-image-2.6.15-1-686-smp, which i know was failing during purge
(while i was investigating for bug #344767, i had also tested
linux-image-2.6.14-2-686-smp (2.6.14-6), and it hanged like the others):
the purge operation for 2.6.15-686-smp failed like 486 flavour:

Bug#346041: Cons dependency scanning broken

2006-01-04 Thread H. S. Teoh
Package: cons
Version: 2.3.0-2
Severity: serious

I just found out that the dependency code in Cons 2.3.0 is broken. It
was working in 2.2.0. If anyone has any dependency problems with cons,
downgrade to 2.2.0-4.

reassign 344767 grub

 It would be great if you could confirm the exact version of those two

 For me, i have provided information in bug #344767, as i explained in
 the previous message: versions, logs, ecc.

I have now looked at this bug report, and it is indeed probable that it is a
bug in grub, who wants to write to stdout, which plays hell with the new
kernel-package debconfified due to messing up the debconf protocol.

Since policy mandates debconf for interaction, this is a RC grub bug, and a
proposed fix is have grub-updates output info on stderr instead.

There were some bugs we redirected to the grub guys, but i can't find them in
the BTS anymore, so reasigning the 344767 bug report to them.

Friendly,

Sven Luther
