Bug#394963: Don't install grub/lilo on MBR
Some servers don't accept strange MBR modifications. Sometimes it is compilations server+some systems (xp for example). I suggest: 1. clear first disk sectors (boot some linux live, dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/some_disk_device usually hda or sda) 2. install XP with this own partitions. DON'T USE DYNAMIC PARTITION! (feature in windows server systems that allow create software raidmirror for windows) 3. after installation, boot XP and create all partitions for linux. you shuldn't initiate or format ths partition. 4. begin installation. select EXPERT mode, help is on the screen. don't create partitions, only change partition types, assign to format and assign to mountpoints. make sure, linux boot partition is active, and windows is inactive. Change this attributes if nesessary. 4a. usually after partition modification before reboot, i run fdisk (not cfdisk other, only the simplest fdisk), look to partition types. If it is nesessary, i correct it to properly partition types, this is usually linux linux swap. 4b. you should't create swap partition. you can use swap as file over linux partition. t degrade a bit performance, but make partition table simpler. sometimes it is very recommended, specially when you use only one hard drive. 5. when you install grub or lilo, DON'T USE MBR that is default behavior. Use linux boot partition for grub or lilo. You can simply specify linux boot partition, /dev/hdaX (X number partition) or (hd0,X). Be sure, (hd0,X) X begin from 0, but /dev/hdaX X begin from 1. 6. continue installation process. For time saving, use as simplest installation as possible. Select only base text install, without graphics, window enviroments (withiut gnome, kde others) and without additional servers. You can install it later. In aptitute it is tasks, last directory in package menu. 7. after installation be sure, that linux boot properly. 8. add to lilo or grub windows boot menu. you have help in /etc/lilo.conf (other file system) or /boot/grub/ some file, but I don't remember what do exactly. 9. after grub config modification do nothing, after lilo.conf type lilo 10. try again boot linux. 11. try boot XP. This should boot, whithout active flag over his partition. 12. look out after active flag modification. when windows change this flag, under disk management tools (under windows) correct active flag to linux partition that should be presented as unknown isn't assigned to any disk drive letter. This method guard against geometry incompatibilities, unsupported MBR modfications made by lilo, grub or other boot managers like this. -- Grzegorz Szyszło Departament Informatyki NOBLE Bank S.A. Package: module-init-tools Version: 3.3-pre11-3,3.3-pre11-2 Severity: grave It seems that upgrading of packeages in unstable is hindered by this bug so the importance should be raised to grave! Bug#429215: CVE-2007-3154 information is misleading and wrong
* Modestas Vainius: eGroupWare svn commit 23934 upgraded wz_tooltip.js from v3.25 to v3.45 so apparently the security problem was fixed between 3.25 and =3.45. ktorrent had wz_tooltip.js v3.44 which I now believe was not affected by this bug since a fix/new feature in 3.45 is probably not related. Although I have fixed #429209 by upgrading to v3.45, now I believe this change was redundant (but I'm not going to revert it) and the bug was false alarm. In the meantime, I've asked the developer of wz_tooltip.js, and he isn't aware of a security fix, either. In a next step, I'm going to ask the person who supplied the bug information to egroupware. To me, it begins to look like an error on egroupware's part; they have invented a security bug where none existed. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#430790: xmoto: No bike or landscape when gameplay begins
Package: xmoto Version: 0.3.0-2 Severity: grave Justification: renders package unusable I have no idea what to make of this problem, and honestly I'm not sure that xmoto is at fault, but I don't know what else it might be. I haven't played xmoto in the past couple of weeks, but when I went to play it recently I wasn't able to play. Everything was normal up to the pre-game preview of the level. The preview looks normal, except that there is what appears to be a picture of the bike perpendicular to the screen (i.e., as if seen from above) embedded in the ground well below the starting point. It's hard to make out and goes by quickly, so I can't be sure of the description. Once gameplay begins the screen goes gray except for the timer area in the upper left (which begins timing) and the overview square, which is in the lower right and empty. Pressing esc brings up the menu, pressing enter restarts the timer, but presing up to accelerate the bike does not generate any acceleration noise. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (900, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.21-5-wasp-1 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash Versions of packages xmoto depends on: ii libbz2-1.0 1.0.3-7 high-quality block-sorting file co ii libc6 2.5-11 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libcurl47.16.2-4 Multi-protocol file transfer libra ii libgcc1 1:4.2-20070609-1 GCC support library ii libgl1-mesa-glx [libgl1 6.5.2-5 A free implementation of the OpenG ii libglu1-mesa [libglu1] 6.5.2-5 The OpenGL utility library (GLU) ii libjpeg62 6b-13The Independent JPEG Group's JPEG ii liblua505.0.3-2 Main interpreter library for the L ii liblualib50 5.0.3-2 Extension library for the Lua 5.0 ii libode0c2 1:0.8.dfsg-1 Open Dynamics Engine - runtime lib ii libpng12-0 1.2.15~beta5-2 PNG library - runtime ii libsdl-mixer1.2 1.2.6-2 mixer library for Simple DirectMed ii libsdl-ttf2.0-0 2.0.8-3+b1 ttf library for Simple DirectMedia ii libsdl1.2debian 1.2.11-9 Simple DirectMedia Layer ii libsqlite3-03.3.17-1 SQLite 3 shared library ii libstdc++6 4.2-20070609-1 The GNU Standard C++ Library v3 ii xmoto-data 0.3.0-2 2D motocross platform game ii zlib1g 1:1.2.3.3.dfsg-2 compression library - runtime xmoto recommends no packages. -- no debconf information -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Bug#422609: FTBFS: Undefined subroutine SWISH::API::Common::VERSION
Sorry, but it seems that libswish-api-common-perl need to be fixed. Nothing can be done in swish-e. I strongly disagree. As outlined in the previous mail, just injecting your methods into your own namespaces would be good enough to fix this issue. In /usr/lib/perl5/SWISH/API.pm line 34 you could replace grep { m/::$/ } keys %SWISH::API:: by the list of packages like this: my @packages = qw/Foo::Bar Bar::Baz .../; CL: for my $class ( map { ${_}:: } @packages ) Although I'd like to reassign this bug back to swish-e again I'm not doing so for now until some consensus is reached. -Flo -- BOFH excuse #311: transient bus protocol violation signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bug#430838: openssh-server: Detection of SELinux enforcing mode is broken

Package: no-ip Version: 2.1.1-4 Severity: serious no-ip uses /etc/no-ip.conf, which is (a) a binary file, and (b) written to by the daemon during run-time. It's not a configuration file in the Unix sense and thus must not live in /etc. I suggest using debconf (#328842) to get answers to the questions asked by -C, then to feed those to no-ip and tell it to generate a file in /var/lib instead. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable'), (500, 'testing'), (500, 'stable'), (1, 'experimental') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 2.6.21-1-amd64 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_GB, LC_CTYPE=en_GB.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/dash -- .''`. martin f. krafft [EMAIL PROTECTED] : :' : proud Debian developer, author, administrator, and user `. `'` http://people.debian.org/~madduck - http://debiansystem.info `- Debian - when you have better things to do than fixing systems signature.asc Description: Digital signature (GPG/PGP)

The same problem here. The python-scipy requires = 1:1.0.1, and python-numpy is 1:1.0.3-1 And dpkg compares the versions correctly: $ dpkg --compare-versions 1:1.0.3-1 ge 1:1.0.1 echo true || echo false true So the problem is maybe in apt-get? Bug#430805: The problem is caused by Image::LibRSVG-isGzCompressionSupported
tags 430805 + patch thanks ...Or so I guess ;-) According to the build log: Failed Test Stat Wstat Total Fail Failed List of Failed --- t/1.t 01127 10 37.04% 23-27 Now, tests 23 and 24 are only run when we have compression support - From t/1.t, starting at line 60: ## if we use z-lib let's give it a try if( Image::LibRSVG-isGzCompressionSupported() ) { ok( $rsvg-loadImage( examples/artscontrol.svg.gz ) ); ok( $rsvg-saveAs( examples/test.png ) ); } else { ok(1); ok(1); } ...I reproduced it - the problem is that $rsvg-loadImage with a svg.gz triggers a segfault, and all the tests from that point on don't get executed at all. Just to illustrate, from the source tree, just after the build died (hence with the compiled module in blib/): $ perl -Iblib/lib -Iblib/arch -e 'use Image::LibRSVG; $rsvg=Image::LibRSVG-new; print $rsvg-loadImage(examples/artscontrol.svg.gz)' triggers basically the same message as the one reported in the bug. Now, the faulty function seems to be Image::LibRSVG-isGzCompressionSupported - In fact, it is not even documented, and the build does not depend on (nor ever mention) Perl's Compress::Zlib or C's zlib. This function is not even documented in the POD or used anywhere else in the code: $ grep -r isGzCompr .|grep -v svn ./t/1.t:if( Image::LibRSVG-isGzCompressionSupported() ) { ./LibRSVG.xs:SVGLibRSVG::isGzCompressionSupported() ./Changes: - added new function isGzCompressionSupported to check if gzipped files can be passed And anyway, in the XS, line 454, it is hardcoded to answer yes: static bool SVGLibRSVG::isGzCompressionSupported() CODE: RETVAL = 1; OUTPUT: RETVAL In fact, changing the 1 to a 0 makes the build work. So, the diff is a baffling: Index: LibRSVG.xs === --- LibRSVG.xs (revision 5662) +++ LibRSVG.xs (working copy) @@ -455,7 +455,7 @@ static bool SVGLibRSVG::isGzCompressionSupported() CODE: -RETVAL = 1; +RETVAL = 0; OUTPUT: RETVAL I'm not uploading this, as I'm unfamiliar with the code and I might be just breaking it. Bug#425742: gnome-session timeouts
clone 425742 -1 severity 425742 grave notforwarded 425742 severity -1 important submitter -1 [EMAIL PROTECTED] thanks Le mercredi 06 juin 2007 à 14:47 +0200, Erich Schubert a écrit : Hi, Logging into Gnome took a long time for me since upgrading to 2.18.2-1 I managed to get Gnome into a working (as in 'fast login') shape again now, here are some things I noticed: - I had 'openbox' twice in my session at priority 20, but with different command lines; one had sm-config-prefix or sm-disabled; the other was a plain openbox --replace. - At login, gnome-session would block after starting openbox - The splash screen showed two openbox icons. - killall openbox in the console didn't speed up the login process - I tried removing the duplicate openbox with the UI, but it didn't work on first try. After downgrading to 2.18.0, I retried that in this time it worked (and after upgrading to 2.18.2 again, the login still was fast). My guess: + gnome-session started two openbox instances + gnome-session waits for both to connect to the session + one openbox kills the other before it connected to g-s = timeout. Thanks for your investigation. Other instances of this bug look in fact like #430630 which is being fixed. That doesn't make your report less valid, but I'm relieved that it doesn't happen so often. The session containing twice the same application is, in fact, broken. The session manager has no way to know that an application will shut down if launched twice; it is just as if you put /bin/false in a session. Gnome-session 2.12 and earlier would have shown the same behavior as 2.18.2. The reason why it works with gnome-session 2.14 to 2.18.0 is that these versions wrongly remove duplicate clients from the session; this causes trouble with some applications, see #423961. My fear is that such session files are valid with the etch version, and that some users could face failures when upgrading to lenny, just like you. If we can circumvent the issue to openbox, that would help. Which is why, it would be nice if you could make some tests with the stable and sid versions of openbox and gnome-session, to know in what exact circumstances two openboxes appear in the session. Thanks, -- .''`. : :' : We are debian.org. Lower your prices, surrender your code. `. `' We will add your hardware and software distinctiveness to `-our own. Feel free to look at #428953 and #429572 to get a taste of the joys that await if you step on that road So what to to then? What is the problem with downgrading? dpkg --status module-init-tools and dpkg --status modutils does look OK for me! I haven't looked closely at pre11-3's pre/postrm, but you might be okay if you were to remove pre11-3 (using --force if necessary) before installing pre11-1. All these bugs are caused by one version installing a diversion over another version's files; as long as each version cleanly wipes all its stuff upon removal, doing a remove/install instead of up/downgrading should be safe.

Your message dated Wed, 27 Jun 2007 19:47:02 + with message-id [EMAIL PROTECTED] and subject line Bug#430630: fixed in gnome-session 2.18.2-2 has caused the attached Bug report to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what I am talking about this indicates a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact me immediately.) Debian bug tracking system administrator (administrator, Debian Bugs database) ---BeginMessage--- Package: gnome-session Version: 2.18.2-1 Severity: important Tags: patch Since the upgrade to 2.18, I had been plagued by gnome-session hanging on startup of any 'non-trivial' session. Attaching gdb showed the hang to be a deadlock because it crashed somewhere inside the glibc memory management code, and the signal handler tried to use memory management functions as well, so it hung waiting for the glibc internal memory management mutex. After a long debugging session chasing countless red herrings, I finally tracked down the cause of the crash. update_trans_effect could end up using stale icon dimensions, so it would write beyond the end of the memory allocated for the pixel data.
