Regarding the way to reproduce this (Re: #398372), it is quite easy:
udev is priority important, not required, so you can't assume that it is
available on the system if you don't depend on it.

This patch was messed up because the CRLF terminators in upstream source are
not present in his quoting of the code. I fixed it by converting everything to
LF, applying and converting back to CRLF. I'm attaching it (I can confirm it
fixes build).
