This argument didn't win me over. I read a fair bit about jigdo (the

in determining whether additional disk space would be required, as I
was planning to download the files on a machine that had just barely
enough space to hold one ISO. It didn't sound like jigdo was a good
 choice in that case.

Actually, it is - it does *not* temporarily need twice the amount of disc
space of the image it downloads, it only needs the space for the image plus
something in the order of 20-50MB of temporary storage.

In Are DVD images of Debian available? section: we should modify the

In Where are the CDs for architecture X? section: I think that the first
two paragraphs should be rebuilt into one where we don't mention the stable
distro as in the link we are using for the stable distro we also have links
for testing, also, I plan to remove cdimage-unofficial.debian.net in the
near future, so it is better if we can remove it now.

OK, removed the reference to cdimage-unofficial.debian.net. The first
bullet looks OK to me like that, so I've added another bullet about testing
images:

liIf a Debian port to a new architecture exists, but has not
yet been released officially, CD images may or may not be
available. Again, see the a href=../Debian on CD/a page - in
contrast to stable images, only one download option may be

In The software on the official CDs is outdated - why don't you release a
new version? section: the last paragraph should be rewritten to let people
know that there is also official testing cds and dvds, and maybe add a link
so that people can find the jigdo images.

Right - that paragraph was written when only Attila made testing snapshots.
But being lazy, all I did was remove the unofficial: ;-)

pAlternatively, try out the CD images of testing

there is emno support for security problems/em for testing -
in extreme cases, several weeks can go by before security holes

 http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/

The link for the cd jigdos should now point to
 http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/cd/jigdo-area/
 in here:

   * Official jigdo files for the testing distribution on CD (all
 architectures, regenerated weekly)

Changed.

 http://www.debian.org/CD/http-ftp/

We are announcing the unofficial dvd images even though they are only
available through jigdo, while the official ones, available the same way at
 http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/dvd/ are not announced.

This short list of see below/only with jigdo is there because you can
tell from the access logs that most people go straight to the HTTP/FTP
page without reading the rest of the CD/DVD-related info. If the list
weren't there, those people would not be aware that some types of images
are only available via jigdo.

I've added an extra item for official testing DVD images. I've also removed
the info all arches/i386 only because it is out of date.

More enfasis on the official images, even though the only ones we have
available without jigdo are the netinst ones (I think that the netinst
images should be announced in this page having a link to the netinst page
 from this one).

TBH, I'm a bit ashamed of the state of the netinst page. We have
- a couple of unofficial, fairly outdated images
- official, but still quite beta images

There is no end-user support for either of these - AIUI, the beta
installer netinst images are really just to test out the new installer, and
the debian-boot folks will not be delighted to answer mails of first-time
Linux users having trouble.

So IMHO at the moment telling people to use the netinst images is not

I think the problem is the Packages(.gz) file in

How could I fix this myself and/or could it be fixed in the next version
of the cdimages ?

Each major Debian release has a codename. Furthermore, there are three

I downloaded the Jigdo lite program and ran it. At the prompt I typed in
the following (as per the example when you run the Jigdo Lite):
 http://server/cd-{1_nonus,2,3}.jigdo and http://debian.org/cd/jigdo-cd/

Ah well, that's just an example. To download the first Debian CD, you need
to enter the following:

http://us.cdimage.debian.org/jigdo-area/3.0_r2/jigdo/i386/woody-i386-1.jigdo

You can find this URL by going to http://www.debian.org/CD/jigdo-cd/,
clicking on USA mirror in the Official images section and then going to
i386. i386 is our abbreviation of Intel/AMD compatible computer. Each
.jigdo file corresponds to one CD image.

Is this method just too advanced for people new to Linux?

That's a difficult question, especially for me as the author of
jigdo-lite...

I suspect that Debian in general may not be for you - while we're busy
working on making everything more user-friendly, other distros generally

asking for mirrors of the official testing cd images

2004-02-17 Thread Santiago Garcia Mantinan
Hi!

Some people have been asking here if we could set up rsync in gluck so that
mirrors of the official cd images could be set up, I have asked for this to
debian-admin but there has been no answer till now.

So, as I believe that the mirrors would be a good thing, I was wondering who
would be insterested in mirroring and if we could setup some kind of push
mirror from gluck to these mirrors, so that I could do an rsync upload, when
the image creation ends, to the mirrors, or something like that (sugestions
are welcome).

Hope we can find some solution for this problem, comments and suggestions
are welcome.

I wonder why does people still use the ftp.fsn.hu testing images instead of
the official ones, I mean, they were of a big help for people upgrading to
testing in the past, but now that we have official images... do they still
 make sense?

It is obvious ;-) The keyword here is *rsync* !
I know that having rsync daemon on gluck does not depend on you, but I have
never got a clue of its admins about the reasons against rsync. Another
solution is to upload the images on a (debian.org) machine with running rsync
daemon.

Mirror updates

From the push-trigger jigdo+iso mirror update project, here are the

http://debian.essentkabel.com/debian-cd/
http://debian.oregonstate.edu/debian-cdimage/

These all have plenty of bandwidth (even if they might be occasionally

of bandwidth available for users in total.

look at Knoppix, which is based on Debian - see
http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html

Not at all. The authors of the instructions are not native speakers of
English (or they're geeky) and everything is there ... terse, but there.

about the unofficial CD images from Sarge/testing on
 ftp://ftp.fsn.hu/pub/CDROM-Images/debian-unofficial/

I wonder why does people still use the ftp.fsn.hu testing images instead of
the official ones, I mean, they were of a big help for people upgrading to
testing in the past, but now that we have official images... do they still
make sense?

I'm saying this because I think that we should focus into testing the
official images which tend to have an updated debian-installer and are
coordinated with the debian-installer guys, I think having input from
unofficial images doesn't help us improve testing, and sometimes it misleads
us, as no mention to wether the problematic images are the official or the
unofficial ones.

How could I fix this myself and/or could it be fixed in the next version
 of the cdimages ?

Why don't you get the official images?

http://gluck.debian.org/cdimage/testing/

If you don't have clear what images you need, go to
http://cdimage.debian.org

Hope that helps.

asking for mirrors of the official testing cd images

Regards...

2004-02-17 Thread Mattias Wadenstein
From the push-trigger jigdo+iso mirror update project, here are the
push-triggered mirrors that should be on the mirror list:

Primary: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/

Push-triggered ones:
http://ftp.se.debian.org/debian-cd/
http://ftp.fi.debian.org/debian-cd/
http://ftp.de.debian.org/debian-cd/
http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian-cd/
http://ftp.eu.uu.net/debian-cd/
http://ftp.leo.org/debian-cd/
http://debian.lcs.mit.edu/pub/debian-cd/
http://debian.essentkabel.com/debian-cd/
http://debian.oregonstate.edu/debian-cdimage/
http://ftp.nluug.nl/os/Linux/distr/debian-CD/

These all have plenty of bandwidth (even if they might be occasionally
slow due to load of course), and even if most of them are in Europe
(especially .NL), there are a couple in north america and should be plenty
of bandwidth available for users in total.

Scripts, keys, etc:
http://www.acc.umu.se/~maswan/debian-push/cdimage/ [*]

It is a multiple-stage jigdo mirror thingie, all wrapped up in a script.

Then contact me for an ssh trigger setup, test and addition to the
cd-runmirrors script on farbror.acc.umu.se aka cdimage.debian.org.

[*]: For existing users, there are some small updates. Mostly cosmetic
though (an empty MD5SUMS-UPDATE/ etc directory turns up in images/current/
during the jigdo-mirror run, it is then removed).
