Towards D-I Stretch Alpha 4

2015-10-07 Thread Cyril Brulebois
Hi,

I've just pushed a patch in D-I bumping the linux kernel ABI for the
latest linux migration to testing, and therefore pondering when to
schedule a release. I'm thinking somewhen before the end of October
would be nice, if feasible on the debian-cd side.

I don't think I've seen many changes lately, except for those planned
on the CD side (thanks for the detailed announce!), so I'm currently
not anticipating bad surprises (but I'm probably lacking imagination
or wisdom).

(Letting debian-release@ know about the possible upcoming udeb block;
even if that would likely be after the October 17th/18th weekend.)

Mraw,
KiBi.

You're a bit vague here - can you give more information please? Which
CD/DVD did you use? What hardware? What exactly did and didn't work
for you?

Hmmm, that sounds *very* odd. My own installation testing specifically
includes running in a VM using EFI and no GUI - this is one of the
quickest tests I can run on my laptop on release day! :-)

Which particular VM are you using?

Bug#801233: EFI install Fails without GUI

2015-10-07 Thread amstead
I am using ESXi 5.5, it is an older dell 2900. (wouldnt think that would mater.

I do a graphical Expert install, and chose most of the defaults, I do Force EFI
mode.

I have tried it multiple time... In fact I am in the process now. I was going
to chose Gnome, then uninstall it. I just wanted a simple box for a MySQL DB
for my son to play on.

I initially tried 8.1 and now am using the 8.2 image.

Bug#801233: EFI install Fails without GUI

2015-10-07 Thread amstead
I understand, it is strange, I don't know if Gnome still uses a HAL or some
system board calls that might be needed with the VMWare system board. I am not
a Gnome user, so if I step off the edge of my knowledge I apologize.

The Force EFI during the partitioning, made it sound like "Yes" indicated that
you didn't care about anything else on the system. I will run the install with
the default.

I actually access my VMware host from a windows box running on VirtualBox on my
local machine. I will run a quick install next, see if I get any different
result.

OK. My own default test setup is with qemu/kvm, but I've seen it work
with Virtualbox too. It *might* be an oddit with ESXi, but I'm
honestly struggling to see how the presence or lack of a desktop
environment could make a difference here!

OK. Out of curiosity, are you changing anything at all related to EFI
or bootloader? If you're forcing EFI mode, is that because you have
another OS installed in this VM?

OK. I'm not aware of any major changes between those releases likely
to make a difference here.

When I install debian on a VM using EFI system settings, deslecting everything
except standard tools and utilities, the installation completes successfully,
but when it is rebooted it hangs after the SMBus is identified. (This is a
point in time) This is the same place where the screen would change, if a GUI
was installed.

When I do the same install and deselect Desktop Environment, but select Gnome,
and the tools on the bottom. The guest operating system will boot normally.

Be nice to have a server with xorg and a web browser only install...
