For RC 4: 1/43: Starting firmware_bookworm build at 2023-05-27:09:03:53 […] 9/43: Starting firmware_sid build at 2023-05-27:09:04:01 […] firmware_bookworm finished successfully (started at 2023-05-27:09:03:53, ended at 2023-05-27:09:06:31, took 0h02m38s) […] firmware_sid finished successfully (started at 2023-05-27:09:04:01, ended at 2023-05-27:09:07:07, took 0h03m06s) Now, waiting to see if someone would join the testing efforts, I diffed firmware lists between rc3 and rc4, and spotted those differences: -./firmware-sof-signed_2.2.4-1_all.deb -./intel-microcode_3.20230214.1_amd64.deb -./intel-microcode_3.20230214.1_i386.deb +./firmware-sof-signed_2.2.5-1_all.deb +./intel-microcode_3.20230512.1_amd64.deb +./intel-microcode_3.20230512.1_i386.deb The intel-microcode bits are OK: intel-microcode | 3.20230512.1 | testing/non-free-firmware | source, amd64, i386 intel-microcode | 3.20230512.1 | unstable/non-free-firmware | source, amd64, i386 The firmware-sof-signed, not so much: firmware-sof-signed | 2.2.4-1 | testing/non-free-firmware | all firmware-sof-signed | 2.2.5-1 | unstable/non-free-firmware | all It's a relatively new upload, and it's of course blocked at the moment: [2023-05-15] Accepted firmware-sof 2.2.5-1 (all source) into unstable (Mark Pearson) (signed by: Vincent Bernat) For the record, those archives end up being published in locations like the following, and I definitely expected those to match the firmware packages getting shipped into the images, not be some kind of snapshot of what's in unstable at the time the release is built! https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/firmware/bookworm/bookworm_di_rc3/ We should definitely clarify the situation, and get to the bottom of that double firmware build. From the log lines quoted above, if both bookworm and sid builds end up shipping files in the same destination directory, the last build wins and overrides the first one entirely? See also the “rsync noise” that seemed somewhat OK to ignore. Not sure whether that's directly related though… ISTR it was probably about some timestamp discrepancy due to the underlying filesystem. For RC 4: file has vanished: "/home/debian-cd/publish/.bookworm_di_rc4/firmware/firmware.zip" rsync: stat "/dsa/cdimage/.incoming/.bookworm_di_rc4/firmware/.firmware.tar.gz.VQGfUC" failed: No such file or directory (2) rsync: rename "/dsa/cdimage/.incoming/.bookworm_di_rc4/firmware/.firmware.tar.gz.VQGfUC" -> "firmware.tar.gz": No such file or directory (2) Cheers, -- Cyril Brulebois (k...@debian.org)<https://debamax.com/> D-I release manager -- Release team member -- Freelance Consultant --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Hey James, On Sat, Feb 24, 2024 at 11:09:27AM +, James Addison wrote: >Followup-For: Bug #1036828 >X-Debbugs-Cc: k...@debian.org > >On Sat, 24 Feb 2024 11:01:31 +, I wrote: >> Should this bug be closed? This prevents the use of, for instance, installing ZFS on an offline computer. There is quite a lot of useful software in the contrib section and excluding it from the media sets are a burden, especially for archival purposes of releases. Using the current mirrors can be fine and all, but eventually 12 won't exist in the current mirrors anymore, including all the software in contrib. One problem (there may be more) is that the ndiswrapper.ko file is not installed. The problem is only with the full cd installer. Using a netinstall version e.g. debian-6.0.5-i386-netinst.iso where ndiswrapper is downloaded over a wired internet connection installs ndiswrapper successfully. The problem seems to extend to other distributions which rely heavily on debian e.g. Linux Mint Debian Edition (linuxmint-201204-mate-cinnamon-dvd-32bit.iso) which also fails to install ndiswrapper.ko. The problem seems to have existed for a long time. I first encountered it several months ago and, then, I found several references to the problem on the internet. Bug#1031696: marked as done (Use of symbolic links in non-free ISO images breaks file system transposition support)
Your message dated Sun, 30 Apr 2023 16:33:52 + with message-id and subject line Bug#1031696: fixed in debian-cd 3.2.1 has caused the Debian Bug report #1031696, regarding Use of symbolic links in non-free ISO images breaks file system transposition support to be marked as done. This means that you claim that the problem has been dealt with. If this is not the case it is now your responsibility to reopen the Bug report if necessary, and/or fix the problem forthwith. (NB: If you are a system administrator and have no idea what this message is talking about, this may indicate a serious mail system misconfiguration somewhere. Please contact ow...@bugs.debian.org immediately.) -- 1031696: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1031696 Debian Bug Tracking System Contact ow...@bugs.debian.org with problems --- Begin Message --- Package: non-free Version: firmware-11.6.0 Not sure if this is something that should be sent to the official bug tracker, since it's an issue with cdimage/unofficial/non-free, but I would like to report that the current cd-including-firmware images, such as 'firmware-11.6.0-amd64-netinst.iso' have a major issue in that, unlike what is the case for the official Debian installation ISOs, such as 'debian-11.6.0-amd64-netinst.iso', they do not support UEFI file system transposition. As a reminder, file system transposition means the ability to take the content of a UEFI bootable media and copy it, at the file system level, to a partition that was independently created and formatted by the user, while preserving the ability of the resulting media to still boot in UEFI mode (thus leveraging the cornerstone of UEFI, as opposed to BIOS, which is the ability to create boot media by copying content at the file system level rather than at the block level). In short, the expectation of many UEFI users -- and I have to commend Debian for having done a stellar job over the past few years to ensure that this is properly supported with official ISOs through, for instance, switching boot media detection to detecting the presence of a specific file rather than looking for a specific partition label or UUID -- is that they should be able to a USB media to FAT32 and then extract the full content from the Debian ISO there, to end up with a media that they can use to both boot and install Debian. This method has the advantage of not relying on a specific utility to be able to create the media (noting that even something as basic as 'dd' is for instance not available on Windows platforms) to instead rely entirely on the native tools provided by their OS, and that have the advantage of usually coming with a GUI that users might also be more comfortable with. Now, the problem is that, when using file system transposition, one cannot rely on symbolic links (such as the ones used by Rock Ridge on top of an ISO9660 file system) to be preserved during ISO file extraction, as, for instance, FAT32 has no support for them whereas it is the file system most people are likely to use for UEFI file system transposition. Yet, the current '/firmware/' structure of 'debian-11.6.0-amd64-netinst.iso' is such that a file like: '/firmware/amd64-microcode_3.20191218.1_amd64.deb' is actually a symbolic link to: '../pool/non-free/f/firmware-nonfree/firmware-amd-graphics_20210315-3_all.deb' So this means that during file system transposition to FAT32, '/firmware/amd64-microcode_3.20191218.1_amd64.deb' will either be lost or contain invalid content, and the Debian installer, which is designed to look into /firmware/... to look for packages, will be unable to locate the firmware files that the people who chose to use 'firmware-11.6.0-amd64-netinst.iso' want it to be able to locate. In short, whereas symbolic links are fine for non-critical things like documentation, they should not be used for files that need to be located by the debian installer, because doing so breaks file system transposition support. As such, we *strongly* recommend, for the sake of making the Debian ISOs work for everyone (rather than only those who will copy the image through dd, which is a subset of users), that, instead of having '/firmware/xyz.deb' symbolic links pointing to '../pool/non-free/x/xyz.deb', the reverse should be used, on account that '/firmware/' is the directory where Debian-installer will be trying to locate the firmware packages and therefore the physical files should always reside there. Or, even better, Debian should look into symbolic links altogether, as they can not be relied on and are a source of trouble. Regards, /Pete --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: debian-cd Source-Version: 3.2.1 Done: Cyril Brulebois We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of debian-cd, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive. [ Cyril Brulebois — high-level summary ] * This release implements many changes related to the 2022 General Resolution about non-free firmware. In particular, this means adding metadata related to firmware packages, allowing hw-detect to configure apt-setup according to firmware packages getting deployed. In the general case, systems installed using netinst should only get main and non-free-firmware (if such firmware packages are needed) configured, without contrib or non-free. * Builds involving local packages (LOCAL and LOCALDEBS settings) were also reworked. This feature is not used for official builds, and some catch-up was needed (apt becomes stricter over time). The expected layout for local packages was clarified (see comments in CONF.sh), and while it is expected to be clearer and better than it was, it might require some local adjustments. . I've tracked down the cause, and it is the fact that the packages we want on the DVD do not get all their recommended packages added to the DVD, making apt fail to find all the packages it find when using the netinst CD. The NORECOMMENDS=0 setting in debian-cd only take effect for the packages directly listed in the task lists. Their recommended packages do not get their recommended packages included on the DVD. I have written this (untested) patch to try to get debian-cd to behave more like apt, and include recommended packages recursively when the NORECOMMENDS=0 flag is set. Including it here for feedback and comments. I'll test the patch and see how it affect the Debian Edu DVD build. :) --- debian-cd.unpatched.squeeze/tools/sort_deps (revision 2074) +++ debian-cd.new/tools/sort_deps (working copy) @@ -477,7 +477,7 @@ if ($add_rec) { #TODO: Look for recommends (not yet included !!) - add_recommends (\@dep); + add_recommends (\@dep, $add_rec); # Check again but doesn't fail if one of the package cannot be # installed, just ignore it (it will be removed from @dep) ($ok, $reasons) = check_list (\@dep, 0); @@ -527,11 +527,12 @@ sub add_recommends { my $list = shift; + my $add_rec = shift; # Do we look for recommends my $p; # = shift; my @copy = @{$list}; # A copy is needed since I'll modify the array foreach $p (@copy) { - add_missing($list, $packages{$p}{"Recommends"}, $p); + add_missing($list, $packages{$p}{"Recommends"}, $p, $add_rec); } } @@ -554,6 +555,7 @@ my $list = shift; my $new = shift; my $pkgin = shift; + my $add_rec = shift; # Do we look for recommends my @backup = @{$list}; my $ok = 1; @@ -596,7 +598,7 @@ # Stop after the first package that is # added successfully push (@{$list}, $pkg); - if (add_missing ($list, $packages{$pkg}{"Depends"}, $pkg)) { + if (add_missing ($list, $packages{$pkg}{"Depends"}, $pkg, $add_rec)) { $or_ok = 1; remove_entry($pkg, $list); push @{$list}, $pkg; @@ -622,11 +624,14 @@ next if $included{lc $_}; # Already included, don't worry next if is_in (lc $_, $list); push @{$list}, lc $_; - if (not add_missing ($list, $packages{lc $_}{"Depends"}, lc $_)) { + if (not add_missing ($list, $packages{lc $_}{"Depends"}, lc $_, $add_rec)) { msg(1, "couldn't add $_ ...\n"); msg(1, "$pkgin failed, couldn't satisfy dep on $_\n"); pop @{$list}; $ok = 0; + } elsif ($add_rec) { + # depends added successfully, add recommends too + missing ($list, $packages{lc $_}{"Recommends"}, lc $_, $add_rec); } remove_entry(lc $_, $list); push @{$list}, lc $_; Happy hacking, -- Petter Reinholdtsen --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: debian-cd Source-Version: 3.1.36 Done: Holger Levsen We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of debian-cd, which is due

This means that blind users who install Debian without a network mirror end up with an unusable installed system, lacking brltty and espeakup to show braille or talk to them. brltty was explicitly removed in version 3.1.0 because it pulls libicu, resulting to 5MiB increase. The rationale was that it was not deemed the size for the little userbase. Some blind users have complained about espeakup, which is about the same story (pulling espeak etc.), so I'm recording the request here, in case that could be reconsidered. Booted a Dell Latitude Ultrabook with preinstalled Windows 10 from aforesaid USB-Stick. Performed full installation including resizing the NTFS partition and including installation of grub(2). Rebooted. No bootable media found. On reboot via F12 I could select Windows Boot Manager to boot successfully into Windows10. But Grub or Linux are not available. Windows10 recognises the resize of the NTFS partition, the additional partitions sda4 (root) and sda5 (swap) are recognised as well. UEFI booting presents a "normal" Windows 10. Legacy booting says, no bootable media found. Booting via UEFI-->Windows Bootmanager boots Windows 10. Legacy AND UEFI booting Installation-USB-Stick work up to the point to register the disk(s), and there it stops, it doesn't seem to recognise the partition table, that the installer has written and is also reported by Windows10. It just presents an unformatted disk of MAX units to go on with. But Windows DatentrÀgerverwaltung does indeed see the created partitions. Please stop using Python2, and fix this issue by one of the following actions. - Convert your Package to Python3. This is the preferred option. In case you are providing a Python module foo, please consider dropping the python-foo package, and only build a python3-foo package. Please don't drop Python2 modules, which still have reverse dependencies, just document them. This is the preferred option. - If the package is dead upstream, cannot be converted or maintained in Debian, it should be removed from the distribution. If the package still has reverse dependencies, raise the severity to "serious" and document the reverse dependencies with the BTS affects command. If the package has no reverse dependencies, confirm that the package can be removed, reassign this issue to ftp.debian.org, make sure that the bug priority is set to normal and retitle the issue to "RM: PKG -- removal triggered by the Python2 removal". - If the package has still many users (popcon >= 300), or is needed to build another package which cannot be removed, document that by adding the "py2keep" user tag (not replacing the py2remove tag), using the debian-pyt...@lists.debian.org user. Also any dependencies on an unversioned python package (python, python-dev) must not be used, same with the python shebang. These have to be replaced by python2/python2.7 dependencies and shebang. This is the least preferred option. If the conversion or removal needs action on another package first, please document the blocking by using the BTS affects command, like affects + src:syslinux If there is no py2removal bug for that reverse-dependency, please file a bug on this package (similar to this bug report). If there are questions, please refer to the wiki page for the removal: https://wiki.debian.org/Python/2Removal, or ask for help on IRC #debian-python, or the debian-pyt...@lists.debian.org mailing list. --- End Message --- --- Begin Message --- Source: syslinux Source-Version: 3:6.04~git20190206.bf6db5b4+dfsg1-2 We believe that the bug you reported is fixed in the latest version of syslinux, which is due to be installed in the Debian FTP archive.
