That'd be what I call a technical solution. Another possibility would be to setup a non-free alternate debian-installer image, that would include some bits of non-free. This one time, at band camp, Thomas Bushnell BSG said: We already had a GR on this, and rejected a second GR to reverse the first. Now is the time for you to graciously decide that you have been outvoted. Please stop pretending that the second GR reaffirmed the first. The option to reaffirm the first didn't even make simple majority. The option to rescind, on the other hand, got a 2.5 to 1 majority. It would be more accurate to say that we failed to rescind the first GR, and that the failure wasn't by a very large margin. -- - | ,''`.Stephen Gran | | : :' :[EMAIL PROTECTED] | | `. `'Debian user, admin, and developer | |`- http://www.debian.org | - signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Does the lack of a free driver which can be used with ndiswrapper mean that it is impossible to use ndiswrapper with such a free driver, should one eventually be written? You can apply this argument to every single package in contrib. No, that's not true. ndiswrapper is an environment for running software, much in the same way as wine is an environment for running software. Heck, even much in the same way that a PC is an environment for running software. Wine is something that was written to make the use of Windows binary software possible on Linux. The fact that you'd do it this way, rather than recompiling the application for Linux and running such a recompiled version instead is a serious indication that the software you're trying to run is, most likely, not a free application. But does that mean that wine requires the use of non-free software? I say it does not. Because there is a major difference between an application that requires the use of a library that is non-free, and a library that allows or facilitates the use of non-free software. Wine and ndiswrapper are in the latter category; a GPL'ed application which is written in Java that requires the use of a non-free API is not, and is in a completely different ballpark. If a free driver/datafile/whatever existed, it would be possible to run Foo without requiring non-free stuff, therefore it belongs to main Is your point that contrib should therefore be empty and has no reason for existance? No. Please don't put words in my mouth if what I said can't be used to make your point. It is already possible to use ndiswrapper without having any non-free software installed. Granted, it doesn't do much useful that way, but a) neither the DFSG nor the SC say anything about usefulness, and b) if a free library package exists in main which no other free package uses it, we don't move the free library package to contrib either. -- Fun will now commence -- Seven Of Nine, Ashes to Ashes, stardate 53679.4 -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Problems found by piuparts
In the past six months, I've filed about 260 bug reports based on what piuparts has found. About 40% of those have been fixed so far. Below is a summary of the common problems, hopefully the list will help everyone to find and especially avoid problems in their own packages. * The most common problem is when postinst creates a configuration file, log file, or some other kind of file, but postrm fails to remove it. * Use of ucf in postrm during a purge, without checking that ucf is installed. Since ucf is not an essential package, postrm during purge cannot rely on it. As it happens, I think it might be good to have ucf (or a subset of it) as an essential package, since this error happens a lot. * Dropping conffiles in a newer version of a package, and not removing it when the package is purged. For example, if the version in sarge has a conffile, but the version in etch does not, whoever upgrades from sarge to etch and then purges the package is left with the file still on the filesystem. Arguably dpkg should deal with this, but it doesn't, so maintainer scripts need to deal with it. * Not using debconf for prompting. There's still a few packages that haven't switched from echo + read to debconf. * Broken use of update-alternatives, which leads to alternatives not being removed properly with the package. For example, the name of the alternative is sometimes spelled differently in postinst and postrm. * Use of /dev/null 21 in package maintainer scripts. This hides errors from the system administrator (or your friendly piuparts runner), and can make it quite annoying to debug what is really going on. While there probably are a few cases where hiding an error is OK, every time I've seen it so far, it has been in error. Typically it seems to be used to avoid cluttering the output with status messages or other such things during package installation. For example, adduser can be quite chatty. Using a --quiet option or at least only redirecting stdout, not stderr, to /dev/null are better choices. * Creating /usr/local/lib/foo in postinst, but not removing it in postrm. * Assumption that /usr/doc still exists. Or, in fact, creating /usr/doc. * Creating a temporary file, but then not removing it afterwards. * Not using invoke-rc.d to start services. These are the more or less common problems. There are more, of course, but they tend to unique. -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
TrueType fonts packages maintenance team proposal
Preamble The maintenance of fonts, at least TTF fonts, is currently splitted out among many maintainers in the project, while the problems faced by TTF font package maintainers are nearly always the same. From my own recent experience of helping/sponsoring/taking over a few font packages, I have concluded that some coordination between font packages maintainers could be an interesting improvement for the project. So, I hereby propose to think about a possible TTF fonts packaging team. Project goals - The first goal for this team would be setting up a font packaging policy. Font packages are usually very simple packages, but having a common packaging style would greatly help incorporating new fonts in Debian. Usually, people who request the packaging of fonts are not often very experienced people and that would help smoothing this learning curve. Having a common maintenance team would also optimize the usage of resources, namely font experts, who are not that common. My personal vision of this is having the font maintenance team slowly becoming the maintainer of more and more ttf-* font packages, with the agreement of the original maintainers, of course. Those would then remain as main maintainer by being listed in the font Uploaders field. The team could also seek for more fonts to be included in Debian, possibly after setting up some prerequisites to avoid too crappy fonts. The project could also include the maintenance of font-related tools, such as fontforge or defoma (which seems mostly abandoned, but probably requires solid knowledge or Perl and cryptic programming...:-)). Project resources - For this, I imagine setting up a maintenance team, with common resources: - a dedicated project on Alioth, with a common SVN repository - a mailing list hosted on lists.debian.org Then, I propose contacting the ttf-* font packages maintainers and propose them to join the team, explaining that this is a volunteer action anyway and they will remain as the main maintainer of their packages. Next steps -- The first step is trying to see whether this proposal receives interest, by my fellow Debian developers, as well as font packages maintainers (several of them not being yet a DD). So, please follow up in -devel to show interest, criticism, laughs and the like. I do not intend to keep the lead of this very long, mostly because I'm not really a font expert. But, at least until a strong team emerges, I can give some time in coordinating the whole stuff and slowly gather the current font packages maintainers. I have voluntarily limited the scope of the project to TTF fonts, which become more an more popular. This is mostly by ignorance and because of my loose knowledge of other font systems. Feel free to propose a wider project (but not too much wide, also: having a first limited focus is probably more realistic). Please feel free to point me at existing projects I wouldn't be aware of (debian-desktop?) which cover similar goals... Yes, and there's plenty of useful, free software compiled as Windows binaries. Some of which is only available as a Windows binary, such as TurboCASH. It is already possible to use ndiswrapper without having any non-free software installed. Granted, it doesn't do much useful that way, If you have to differentiate between able to be used and useful, you don't have a point. but a) neither the DFSG nor the SC say anything about usefulness, and b) if a free library package exists in main which no other free package uses it, we don't move the free library package to contrib either. If it's only useful for non-free software, we should probably consider it. More likely, it's not useful at all, and we should consider dropping it entirely. How many libraries do we have in this state? Cheers, aj signature.asc Description: Digital signature

We should also ensure that all the fonts packages have correct debtags. Since ucf is not an essential package, postrm during purge cannot rely on it. As it happens, I think it might be good to have ucf (or a subset of it) as an essential package, since this error happens a lot. So assuming that we're stuck with the current implementation for a bit where ucf is not part of essential, I do wonder if checking whether ucf is installed is actually the correct thing to do in postrm purge. The state prior to purge is defined as config files; the difference between config files state and purged is whether there are still config files left on the system. If the package can't actually succeed in removing its config files because ucf is not installed, isn't it *correct* for the postrm purge command to fail? I.e., I think it's more of a bug to allow dpkg to put the package into purged state leaving orphaned config files behind than it is for postrm purge to fail and leave the package in config files state.
