Song Submission - "Lonely"
I wanted to submit my song "Lonely". The response I've gotten thus far has been so absolutely humbling. I can't even believe it. I've heard from several people who were ready to take their lives that somehow, this song came on, and gave them strength to keep moving forward. Absolutely blows my mind. Makes me feel like there's something larger at work. Also, me and my brother have a combined 110K instagram followers so we'll be able to send traffic your way. It be mutually beneficial. If not, I'll still continue to support you and your channel. Keep doing what you're doing. Re: pbuilder: create: how to set specific UID for some system user (e.g., _apt)

These are the options in my mind: * set APT::Sandbox::User to "root", and give up on sandboxing * add a hook to create a system user with the uid that you like, and set APT::Sandbox::User to that special user * add a hook to change the uid of the _apt user to the uid you want In pbuilder, hooks G are the ones that should be used for this job, to tweak the chroot right after debootstrap during its creation. For the first case, you can just inject that option through APTGETOPT (in the other cases, it's probably a good idea to add a file in the chroot's /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/; see also APTCONFDIR). -- regards, Mattia Rizzolo GPG Key: 66AE 2B4A FCCF 3F52 DA18 4D18 4B04 3FCD B944 4540 .''`. more about me: https://mapreri.org : :' : Launchpad user: https://launchpad.net/~mapreri `. `'` Debian QA page: https://qa.debian.org/developer.php?login=mattia `-

Re: Hurd-i386 and kfreebsd-{i386,amd64} removal
On 15371 March 1977, Aurelien Jarno wrote: How is the move to debian-ports supposed to happen? I won't have the time to do anything about it within the 2 weeks. The process to inject all packages to debian-ports is to get all the deb, udeb and buildinfo files from the archives (main and debug) and associate them with the .changes files that are hosted on coccia. We'll also need to fetch all the associated GPG keys used to sign the changes files. Then we can inject that in the debian-ports archive. It would be nice to have a bit more than 2 weeks to do all of that. Ok. How much? Is 6 or 8 weeks better? I don't think, given how long this is on the table already, it doesn't make much difference if its 2 or 8. Just something thats clear defined and not some random, non-clear "sometime in the future" point. -- bye, Joerg

The main advantage of 3.0 (native) is that it makes it explicit that the package is deliberately native, whereas a 1.0 native package is indistinguishable from a package that was intended to be 1.0 non-native but ended up native because the maintainer forgot to have the orig.tar.gz in the right place when building it. (The presence or absence of a -revision in the version number should in theory be well-correlated with non-native or native packaging, but this doesn't always hold - for example python3-defaults is a native package with a non-native-style version number. Perhaps Policy should require packages like python3-defaults to use a native-style version number like 3.7.3+1 instead of 3.7.3-1?) dpkg also compresses 3.0 (native) packages with xz by default. smcv
Golang >= 1.12 in Buster?
Hello, I just figured that Buster is, from the current POV, going to ship with Golang 1.11. While I am new to Go, I figured that we should probably have a newer version of Golang in Buster, as they are now doing versioned dependencies, but only starting with 1.12 or 1.13 (not quite sure about the difference here). This seems to be rapidly adopted by projects out there, so having only older versions of Golang is becoming useless quite soon. One project which I am trying to work on, coredns, already does not compile with anything older than 1.12. I know we are in freeze already, but I still need to ask, whether there might be a freeze exception, or how we are going to remedy this situation? Cheers, Toni

I'm curious how the GPG bit works given that there is no guarantee that the signature can be validated at any other point in time than ingestion on ftp-master - especially considering the rotation/expiry of subkeys and buildd keys. In this case the files already come from a trusted source and should be ingested as-is, I guess? (Not that I particularly like the fact that it's only a point in time validation.) In the context of Debian as a distribution itself, there is not much more to be done actually: the distro can be installed with the normal debian installer, we don't depend on unreleased patches to have a working system. We even have gotten llvm working recently. In a broader Debian meaning, for instance with Helmut we have achieved cross-bootstrappability of hurd-i386 from amd64, which is really a great thing, because we know that we can now reboostrap the whole distribution thanks to this if needed. > > Patching software should be handled upstream indeed. > > Yes, but most upstreams are a bit reserved You mean, more than the Debian maintainers? Well, at some point, "so be it, you won't have the works-on-Hurd badge". For base packages like librsvg, the question is of a bigger importance, for the port of course, but also for computer science in general: if base packages can't easily be ported to new operating systems, the whole computer science will be just stuck with Linux, and I don't think it's a good thing. That reminds me a recent paper about the requirement for fork() in the Unix interface (https://lwn.net/Articles/785430/), which notably says that because of the complexity for implementing it, it's hard to create new operating systems with new ideas while providing a POSIX interface for being useful in general. > >> So I disagree on "One person is enough" > > > > I meant only for the Debian-specific things, I am the only DD who > > currently uses its key for signing packages, making CD images, etc. > > That's what I meant by "the daily ports things". > > Well, I guess it's not that easy I fear as there are no parts that can > be seen as separate standalone things, it's all connected in various ways. Yes, these are very intertwinned, but I like working on it and the current Debian infrastructure makes it easy enough to do. > But realistically it's not enough in my eyes to keep Hurd on even > tracking the normal evolving of Debian. I have since long stopped hoping that the Hurd port would ever be an arch released in Debian (see previous threads in the past years about moving to debian-ports). Just for the security guarantees it would require, that can't work. But as a debian-ports, I believe it can continue working just like it has in the past years. Samuel

Aurelien -- Aurelien Jarno GPG: 4096R/1DDD8C9B aurel...@aurel32.net http://www.aurel32.net

Please stop discussing about this, pulling CTTE in won't help with anything, you can't force volunteers to be doing work. This was already discussed before, and is out of scope from this thread, and not the time to discuss about it. Really, you need to learn to stop trying to bully people into the way you want things to happen. Samuel

O.k. need to be more specific, so the same as you mentioned further down, ..."in the context of Debian, the packages of Debian and it releases". > Patching software should be handled upstream indeed. Yes, but most upstreams are a bit reserved especially if it's about Hurd as they have no knowledge about (but I also don't) and fearing that patches will break and complicate other things, kFreeBSD is a bit easier or more accepted and known. But I here also see the porters to get also in touch with upstream as I'm as the maintainer of a package not necessarily have the knowledge to keep the specific architecture up to date in the upstream project or simply have no time or interest on this. >> So I disagree on "One person is enough" > > I meant only for the Debian-specific things, I am the only DD who > currently uses its key for signing packages, making CD images, etc. > That's what I meant by "the daily ports things". As I've not written this in my previous email, so to state it now, I've a big respect on your work on Hurd! Sometimes it's amazing to see with what people can came up with, and gladly there are also porter people where I get patches for other ports to keep packages building successful. -- Regards Carsten Schoenert

It is not reasonable that a porter should submit patches to multiple upstreams (really many) when the package maintainer is (and should be) the natural interface to a single upstream...

Have you seen this? Look at the age of these bugs. Note also that several bugs have patches attached to them. Debian maintainers just don't want to help with non-linux bugs. I can't follow that style of discussion. You seems to really want to not accept some facts about the kFreeBSD and Hurd architectures. On the one hand you complaining about Debian is a *non*-universal OS, on the other side I haven't seen a broader supporting from the people who wanting these architectures to stay in Debian on some important packages. Please stop to complain on non specific things and start to solve the problems you see or have! You know: Someone means YOU, it's all up to the people to keep things running. Or simply move over to other projects were you feel more comfortable with. There is enough space for all of us. Both architectures haven't seen any major development in the past years and for me as a maintainer of packages the workload on supporting these architectures between the new upstream releases costs a lot of time with no real gain in the end as the build dependencies later can not be fulfilled or most of the time while importing new source I'm working on readjust the patch queue! So I disagree on "One person is enough" as long this one person can not keep track on all the required main and corner cases so other maintainers get to do the workload here alone. -- Regards Carsten Schoenert

What now changed is that we have a deadline, so somehow it will have to be done. That's the difference. Sure, no problem with that. > If you want us to change it, mail the team with the reasons, and we at > least discuss it again. No guarantees on outcome. Well, it's very odd that a team decision is suddenly made with a two-week effect without asking whether the schedule will be fine. I guess I have to explicitly confirm here that yes, I know that the decision _whether_ to move is not sudden. Again, I'm talking about the schedule here. Asking a Debian team to do something time-consuming within a two-week timeframe in the middle of the full freeze, really... I won't have the time to discuss with ftpmaster about it in the coming days anyway. Samuel

Currently my code uses a partial mirror of snapshot.debian.org, and I ran a custom lintian myself on 339491 source packages. Ideally all the needed additional tags will be added to lintian, and doing a more detailed and "real-time" analysis will be possible just by looking at the lintian results on https://lintian.debian.org. Re: Flatpak apps from Debian packages
(Belatedly changing the subject line, sorry for the digression...) On Sat, 13 Apr 2019 at 09:34:54 +0800, Paul Wise wrote: > I expected the Flatpak /app directory to also be entirely read-only, > are there parts of /app that are not read-only? /app is also (separately) read-only, and points into a separate libostree deployment. If libostree is like git for OS binaries, then a deployment is roughly the equivalent of a git checkout, except that it needs to be treated as read-only, because it's made up of hard links into libostree's content-addressed object storage. (It can sometimes be OK to write to it very carefully by using atomic-overwrite to break hard-links, and the ostree package installs a FUSE filesystem rofiles-fuse that is intended to optimize this process by only allowing the few operations that are safe.) I think there's briefly a read/write /app (a tmpfs instead of a libostree deployment?) during the process of building and installing an app, so that you can `make install` into it before committing it into the libostree object storage. > I might at some point take a look at adding such a mode to flatdeb, > would you accept having that as an option? Sure. I probably won't be able to review it immediately, but it's certainly a mode that's worth experimenting with. The steps I'd suggest would be: * build the base tarball, like now (multiple runtimes can share this, it's basically a debootstrap minbase) * build a Platform runtime ('runtimes' mode) that contains the leaf package and all its dependencies (the input file for 'runtimes' mode can already ask to include arbitrary packages) * perhaps don't build a SDK runtime? (new --no-sdk option) * build an app from a manifest file that lists the intended metadata and the files that need to be copied into /app for export (new mode, or new options in the input to 'app' mode) I'm not sure whether people who aren't Collabora staff or customers can get accounts on our Gitlab, so you might have to clone it elsewhere and send me email instead of using merge requests for now, but it would probably make sense for me to move flatdeb's canonical repository to Salsa when it settles down a bit. > > The matching SDK runtime that is used to compile apps > > I don't know enough about SDKs in the Flatpak world, would they > contain something like the Build-Depends and their recursive deps? Normally, when you're building a runtime to be shared by multiple apps, the SDK contains everything necessary to compile and debug those apps, so the -dev packages and (optionally) detached debug symbols corresponding to all the libraries you're interested in, plus compilers and a basic CLI debugging environment (gdb, strace, valgrind, less, vi). The example Games runtime in flatdeb is an example of this, very loosely inspired by the Steam Runtime: it has the build-dependencies of OpenArena, and it would be reasonable to expand it to have the B-D of some other games and game engines like darkplaces and ScummVM. The detached debug symbols in /usr/lib/debug are usually carved out into an "extension" so that you don't always have to install them, and flatdeb does that automatically: you get net.debian.flatpak.Games.Platform and net.debian.flatpak.Games.Sdk runtimes, each of which is designed to be mounted on /usr, together with an optional net.debian.flatpak.Games.Sdk.Debug extension that gets mounted on /usr/lib/debug if installed. For your idea of building a runtime per leaf package that happen to share most of their content and get deduplicated by ostree, putting its complete B-D in the SDK runtime might be excessive (the whole point of your idea is that we don't recompile the leaf package), but I think a SDK runtime that contains a CLI debugging environment with might still make sense. flatdeb also produces a ...Sdk.Sources extension with the source code (by evaluating the Source and Built-Using fields), to make GPL compliance easier - this mimics what flatpak-builder does. At some point I'll add an option to disable this for people who are doing their GPL compliance some other way (my work project might start taking snapshots of the apt repository that exactly matches a particular runtime, at which point the Sources extension becomes redundant and can be discarded). > > In principle there'd be nothing to stop debos from using something > > like user-mode-linux as an alternative to qemu/KVM. > > I guess you could also use container tools like systemd-run with user > namespaces (once those are enabled by default)? My understanding is that systemd-run is not designed for unprivileged use. If I'm wrong about that, then, yes, debos could in principle use it. bubblewrap is *not* suitable for this use: it's probably OK for building a Flatpak app that is a leaf package (and flatpak-builder uses it for this), but it isn't going to work for building the container that is the basis for the runtime, because dpkg/apt/the Debian base system expect to be able to access

Introducting Debian Trends: historical graphs about Debian packaging practices, and "packages smells"
TL;DR: see https://trends.debian.net and https://trends.debian.net/#smells Hi, Following this blog post[1] I did some work on setting up a proper framework to graph historical trends about Debian packaging practices. The result is now available at [2], and I'm confident that I will be able to update this on a regular basis (every few months). Additionally (and much more controversially I guess :-) ) I also added an analysis of "package smells"[3], such as "not using dh", "not using a recent debhelper compat level", "not using a 3.0 source format", etc. I understand that in some cases there might be good reasons to keep those "smells", but I find it valuable to have them presented in a more actionable way to fix the cases that should be fixed. So there's a list of smells, sorted by maintainer/uploader [4]. Given that Debian is currently frozen to prepare the buster release, this is a bad time to start fixing those smells, but I will send a reminder to debian-devel@ once buster is released. (It's interesting to see how the number of smells plateaued during previous freezes). - Lucas [1] https://www.lucas-nussbaum.net/blog/?p=945 [2] https://trends.debian.net/ [3] https://trends.debian.net/#smells [4] https://trends.debian.net/smells-dd-list.txt signature.asc Description: PGP signature
