Re: finally end single-person maintainership

hi,

just adding some random data points to this thread:

a barrier "why not use github" directly. Also salsa is Debian only,
which also is a barrier for some.)
- I love autopkgtests.
- I hardly every look at the autopkgs logs on salsaci, cause I find
them incomprehensible and the javascript "UX" makes me wanna chop wood.
- I also think disallowing single-person maintainership would be very unwise,
though I agree team maintenance in general is probably better than
  single-person maintainership. Still disallowing single-person
maintainership

doesnt make a team and motivation lost is often motivation lost forever.

Very well summarized, fully agreeing with the above, esp. the part
about single-person maintainership (let's simply keep it and, at the
same time, encourage people to work in teams).

Also regarding gbp, my packaging workflow does not require it
(debian/-folder-only in Git). Being enforced to use some other pkg'ing
style would reduce my fun and end up with less productivity, I fear.
The gbp workflow has its pros, but for me it is a too complex overhead
without much gain to the end result (the uploaded package).

Debian is about freedom, so let's apply that to free choice of the
tooling to be usable.

light+love,
Mike

Would it make sense to call the package "ubuntu-unity-hud" then,
since it's part of a larger ecosystem, and also not the ecosystem
that most people would associate with the name "Unity" these days?

Or is that a user-visible commandline tool, which needs a short name
for that reason?

The UBports team has one component (lomiri-action-api) that depends on
Unity HUD. In Lomiri upstream we have now addressed this differently
and ported the little fraction of HUD API over into lomiri-action-api.
This decouple the dependency on the Unity HUD and makes this ITP
obsolete. Thus, closing this ITP...

Re: Bug#1006996: Bug #1006996: mate-polkit: On arm64 architecture mate-polkit tries to open an amd64 file and fails

2022-11-18 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi Thomas, dear DD colleagues (et al.),

On Fr 18 Nov 2022 20:55:39 CET, Thomas Uhle wrote:

Dear maintainers,

in addition to Christian Britz' report, the autostart desktop file
should also be in mate-polkit because of the architecture triplet in
the path to polkit-mate-authentication-agent-1, and the provided
manpage has not yet been moved to mate-polkit-bin what causes a
lintian issue.

I have prepared a patch that should fix all these packaging issues.

Best regards,

Thomas Uhle

The change-over of the XDG autostart file from common:pkg
mate-polkit-common to bin:pkg mate-polkit is not as simple as it seems.

This is why I am cross-posting to the debian-devel mailing list and
would like to ask for ideas...

Here is the challenge:

The flaw in mate-polkit is that the
/etc/xdg/autostart/.desktop file so far has been shipped
in mate-polkit-common (which usually got built on amd64 builders) and
that that .desktop file contains a multi-arch path in the Exec= key.

So, for non-amd64 architectures, the .desktop files tries to execute a
polkit-agent binary at some amd64 multi-arch path. Thanks to Christian
and Thomas for dealing with this and reporting the issue.

With the next upload of mate-polkit src:pkg I want to achieve these things:

  * move /etc/xdg/autostart/.desktop from
mate-polkit-common (arch:all) to

mate-polkit (arch:any), ... and yes, I have seen #595112

  * as the Exec= field in this file definitely needs to get updated
on non-amd64 machines

(see #1006996), I most certainly don't want to keep versions of that
file (stemming from arch-indep mate-polkit-common) that got
modified by the site/machine
admin. In most cases, I want to install the new version from the
arch-dep package mate-polkit.

  * so for non-amd64 architectures, the best solution probably is to
remove the
previous .desktop (mate-polkit-common) file and
replace it by the new

.desktop file (ignoring local changes)

Question to DD colleagues: How can this be achieve in a clean way
without piuparts (or other QA tools) yelling at me afterwards? Any
spontaneous ideas???

To simplify life (and yes, this is debatable): Do situations exist,
where an enforced conffile update (overwriting it) is allowed /
justifiable? If so, do you know example packages that exercise this?

Thanks in advance for any feedback!
Mike

Re: libpaper and gnulib

2022-11-13 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi,

On So 13 Nov 2022 15:01:50 CET, Reuben Thomas wrote:

I am a bit torn here: with my DM hat on, stripping out gnulib sources where
possible and using Debian's gnulib package seems the right thing to do.
With my upstream hat on it leads potentially to bug reports that don't
correspond to an upstream release; and further few Debian packages that use
gnulib actually seem to use this method (there are 26 build-rdeps of
gnulib).

You could use the global File-Excluded: header in debian/copyright.
This could then strip off the gnulib files from your libpaper code.

And with File-Excluded: make sure you use the the --repack option for
uscan when retrieving the orig tarball from the upstream source
location.

About bug reports: people should report to Debian's bug tracker first
anyway and then let the maintainer decide whether to forward to
upstream or not.

I using this orig tarball repacking for several of my packages (also
for ripping out non-Linux code that I don't want to attribute in
debian/copyright) and it is working nicely.

If you are interested, I can dig out some example packages that show
this technique.

My apologies. You are completely correct. I don't understand how I
came to think that the approach I took was sufficient. I guess it is
a long time since I prepared a package with so many different bits and
pieces in it.

sharing some best practice here, feel free to adopt or give feedback on.

For d/copyright maintenance I use my update-copyright.in script [1]. I
run it on the source package's base folder.

The script creates a d/copyright.in file. I keep this file as-is as
part of my debian/ folder and use it for later reference.

When wrapping up a new DEB package, I copy over d/copyright.in to
d/copyright and complete it manually (plus doing some manual checks to
see if the licensecheck tool got things right). Note, that I don't use
file globbing in d/copyright, at all; every source file is listed
individually.

This catches 99% of all DFSG licenses on 80-95% of files in the
src:pkg's source tree (depending on upstream being good at using
proper license headers on individual files or not).

Whenever an upstream version bump is due, I import the new upstream
and re-run the update-copyright.in script on the src:pkg's base folder
again. I get a diff between my previous debian/copyright.in version
and the new version. This diff I then work into the actual d/copyright
manually and thus have an easy workflow for tracking copyright changes
in upstream projects (on a per individual file basis).

This workflow is esp. helpful on projects where many copyright
holders/years and/or licenses are involved and get updated every year
or maybe with every changeset / new contributor.

Greets,
Mike

getting pinta updated in Debian

2022-03-02 Thread Mike Gabriel

Hi all,

I am currently looking into requirements of getting pinta in Debian
updated to the latest upstream version.

My problem: I am not at all a .NET developer or maintainer, so this is
a piece of work with a steep learning curve for me.

What I found now are AUR packages for pinta (and its dependency
dotnet-runtime) that are quite up-to-date:

https://archlinux.org/packages/community/any/pinta/
https://archlinux.org/packages/community/x86_64/dotnet-core/

It basically looks like we need to get dotnet-core into Debian and
then update pinta to latest 2.0.2 upstream release and we are done.

However, dotnet-core seems to be massive and I wonder if that can be
avoided as its API is provided by something else in Debian. I am
asking this possibly stupid question because I am astounded that noone
has ever packaged dotnet-core, filed an RFP or ITP for it, etc.

Furthermore, it seems that dotnet-core has been licensed under a
DFSG-compliant MIT license variant [1].

Do I miss anything here? Is there a hidden blocker? Or is it just that
noone has been interested in dotnet-core (and/or a pinta version
bump), so far / recently?

Thanks for feedback!
Mike

That seems like the least complex way to handle this. No epochs. No
version skew between upstream and Debian. No version skew between the
Debian source package and the binary packages. No version skew between
Debian and Ubuntu. No tricky version number mangling in debian/rules.

Version numbers are cheap. It's really not a big deal to bump your
version from 0.9 to 14. After that, you don't have any obligation to
do year.month versioning.

Yeah, I think this is the way to go. Especially since this also
affects other distros which will also have the same issue.

If ayatana-indicator-messages is the natural successor of
indicator-messages it should just make sure to have a higher
(upstream) version number.

And there is prior art here. E.g. systemd bumped it's version bumper
from v44 to v183 after it had merged the udev sources (which at that
point were at version v182).

We will to a year.month.revision versioning scheme for all Ayatana
System Indicators coming with the next release series.

Thanks for your feedback.

Yeah, I am aware of that possibility. However, I don't really feel
like inheriting the versioning from the Ubuntu package (year.month) in
the Debian package and be forced to carry that one along with me in
the future forever...

I'd rather use the upstream version (of ayatana-indicator-messages)
and be done with it.

Epochs should be avoided when possible, because they (by design) are
hidden in some interfaces, and therefore can cause surprises (e.g.
intending to tighten to "newer-than-some-version" but forgetting to
include the epoch - and not noticing the mistake until after the freeze
many moons later).

If you don't want to keep track of Ubuntu changing their versions
because you know that yours should always beat theirs, then how about
statically setting binary version higher yet within zero'th epoch?

  dh_gencontrol -- -v9999~$(DEB_VERSION)

 - Jonas

Thanks, Jonas, I'll consider that v thingy...

Do others have an opinion on this?

Binary packages need not use same versions as source package.

Fair point. I still, in fact, do the upstream differentiation between Kurento,

possible implementation for the Kurento framework? Etc.

I agree about kurento- being the better namespace.

Bug#989336: ITP: matrix-sydent -- Matrix reference identity server

Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: Mike Gabriel
X-Debbugs-Cc: debian-devel@lists.debian.org,

* Package name: matrix-sydent
  Version : 2.3.0
Upstream Author : Richard van der Hoff
* URL : https://github.com/matrix-org/sydent/
* License : Apache-2.0
  Programming Lang: Python
Description : Matrix reference identity server

Sydent is a reference implementation of the Matrix Identity Server API
 in Python, supporting:
 .
   - Validation of 3PIDs (email and MSISDNs) for signup and discovery
   - Binding of 3PIDs to MXIDs (for discovery)
   - Lookup of 3PIDs to MXIDs
   - Storing unresolved 3PID invites.
   - Replication of assertions across a closed federation.
 .
Instances currently run at matrix.org and vector.im; meanwhile others
are free to run their own but they will not be able to participate in
 the global directory lookup table.
 .
N.B. use of the Identity Server API is stricly optional in Matrix - it's
only used to resolve 3PIDs to MXIDs.
 .
Matrix is an open standard for interoperable, decentralised, real-time
communication over IP. It can be used to power Instant Messaging, VoIP/WebRTC
signalling, Internet of Things communication or anywhere where's a need for
a standard HTTP API for publishing and subscribing to data whilst tracking the
 conversation history.
 .
In Matrix, every user runs one or more Matrix clients, which connect through
to a Matrix homeserver. The homeserver stores all their personal chat history
and user account information, much as a mail client connects through to an
 IMAP/SMTP server.
 .
This package will be maintained under the umbrella of the Matrix
 Packaging Team.
