ClamAV supportability in stable release (was: Unidentified subject!)
Hi all, (Dared to fix CC/Subject which seemed to be somewhat broken in initial email.) The release team have been asked to remove ClamAV from testing (and hence the next stable release. See bug #587058. The issue seems to be that it's not supportable in stable due to the upstream maintainers deciding to upgrade their data files in a way that isn't binary compatable with previous versions. A couple of options have been mentioned for what to do with this, including volatile. I'm opening this mail thread for discussion, and if no one comments then I'll go ahead and action the bug report in two weeks. For avoidance of doubt, this will also affect reverse depends, see dd-list below. [...] Has there been feedback other than Christian's idea of adding a kind-of-transitional package? Speaking as clamav maintainer, we'll happily continue to upload to unstable, and if migration to testing (and stable) is permitted - so be it, but the volatile-path seems to be a lot more promising and future-proof. That said, the clamav ABI/API is surely stabilizing and hence users of clamav packages from stable might be better off than before. But there's no guarantee that they really get all the latestgreatest detection capabilities. One clear volatile-only advantage is added cleanliness: No need to mess around with different versions that actually are the same packages, and it just feels a lot better if we can have a package in volatile only, and not in unstable as well. How about keeping it in the archive and maybe use some method (debconf note, for instance: everybody knows I hate them but that would be a good use case) to notify users that they really should add volatile to their sources.list. The package could even provide an optional entry added to sources.list.d that would point to volatile. This way, users could still easily find clamav, packages could still depend on itand we would have a method for providing a support path. Anothe option would be a relaxed update policy for Stable, maybe only for clamav (I would love to see the same relaxed update policy for other stuff, samba coming to mind...bu tthat's another story). signature.asc Description: Digital signature

Bringing a new glibc upstream into Debian is a lot of work, and waiting for m68k and Hurd to support TLS properly is sadly not an option we can consider. I would like to help out on this issue since it doesn't seem like it will get done by someone else. Is there any documentation available for porting TLS to a new architecture? I have a basic understanding of the concepts but not the implementation details. Presumably the order of work needs to be 1) fix binutils, 2) fix gcc, 3) fix glibc. If this is correct, I can pull the source for binutils and start taking a look. Is there anyone that would be a good contact point for questions about this once I start looking at it? I presume there are also specific versions of each package that need to be fixed, not just whatever is current from upstream. Actually they need to do minor releases every six months which are mostly package updates and minor changes to the stable OS and have a major release every couple years where they can work on multiyear projects like the Debian installer, or giving dpkg an overhaul. Unfortunatly Ubuntu is the only place to turn for a stable distro that actually gets package updates. Nobel Debian should never follow anothers example. Hi Steve, Thanks for your email. I'd like to say touche but I basically believe you are wrong. Unfortunately I found from past-personal experience that email to busy people is generally ignored unless brought to their attention. Additionally personal personality conflicts between myself and press contact would practically guarantee that. At any rate, I had hoped that my email was being constructive (or that it could spaark a constructive discussion) but that doesn't appear to have been the case. I had hoped that others would have noted: - the most recent PR does not have any indication of embargoed status. Is it for immediate release? Should it be held briefly? Most organisation use embargoed press releases so that when important events happen (e.g. a Debian release) everything can be prepared in advance and happen simultaneously. - no 'about Debian' section Even smaller projects like Gnome has a section detailing, who they are, a brief outline of their goals, etc. We place great value on things like the Social Contract and the DFSG and we should have a similiar section which mentions them - particularly for journalists who are not familiar with Debian this may be a great 'teaser' in an article about us. A good example one is URL: http://gnome.org/press/releases/guadec2006-location.html - nothing about debconf The Gnome release, above, highlights where the next GUADEC will be; how many Press Release have their been highlighting the current debcamp/debconf? There are other additional issues, all of which are technical -- since press release are essentially 'cookie-cutter' things. The last issue is related to timelyness and my belief that quite a number of developers have taken on too many roles within the project -- to the detriment of the project. Once again, thanks for your email, I personally didn't like the tone but I do take your point. I just happen to diagree with it. =-) bom, tava olhando no new manteiners guide, na man do dh_make, etc, etc... =-) f2r PS: estou no trabalho e ainda nao coloquei minha sign key no gpg, então a mensagem nao ta indo assinada, logo arrumarei isso... =-)

Done Building Dependency Tree... Done The following NEW packages will be installed: vme-universe-modules-2.4.19 0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 0B/119kB of archives. After unpacking 815kB will be used.

Diamonds as An investment I took the liberty of getting your email address from the internet. I will not bother you again after this intrusion. My name is Anthony Thomas and I am an English diamond dealer. Diamonds are a great investment with their price rising app 8-10% per year without the risks that the equity markets (stocks and shares) have as we have recently witnessed. The problem has always been however that a normal individual cannot get access to diamonds at the genuine 'trade' price so that resale was very difficult and one would have to wait many years before being able to get a return on their investment diamonds. This is no longer the case for you. We are currently offering our loose certified diamonds at 40% off the international wholesale price (known as the Rappaport Price List). This price is less than most retailers would ever hope to pay for such goods. The European Gemological Laboratory certifies all stones and all goods may be supplied using an ESCROW service so that funds are not released to us until you have safely recieved the goods. Please feel free to ask ANY independent jeweler if this is a good deal or not. Obviously if this is of interest to you then we need to talk directly to one another. Please telephone me on +6617626045 or fax me on +662 6309 612. Please do not reply to me by email as this account is only being used to send this once only message. Thank you for your time. I may have old versions of a lot of packages (most come from hamm), however, this behaviour of fakeroot has me very puzzled, and I wondered what is going on??? Is this something to do with buggy signal handling putting the foreground zsh process into the background?? I am going to install the fakeroot from the frozen libtricks package, as I suspect it will help. Brian May [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Dear Sir/Madam, I am Meteorologist from China. Would you do me a favor? I want compile a Fortran program with g77: program gg integer i i=999 print*,i stop end But G77 cannot do it. Yes I wish that the default of integer and float has 8 bytes. Please tell me which switcher of g77 compiler should I use to do it? If g77 has not a such switcher, how can I do it? I use Debian Linux+g77+gcc(2.7.2.1) on a PC(p133+32M). Thank you in Advance Best regards, Gu mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://guxq.yeah.net Chinese Academy of Meteorological Sciences 46 Baishiqiao Road Beijing 100081,P.R.China -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. I use Debian Linux+g77+gcc(2.7.2.1) on a PC(p133+32M). This question should probably go to debian-user, or, better yet, to the mailing list on fortran comp-fortran-90 and/or the newsgroup comp.lang.fortran. Anyway, in order to do what you want you need: * g77 v0.5.20 or later (better upgrade to the egcs package) * to declare those integers as integer*8 (or equivalently integer(kind=2) I think) * probably avoid using integer*8 *literal constants* until there's better support for integer*8. And no, I don't think there's a compiler switch for making integer*8 the default automaticly. Hope it helps, Jose = Jose L. Well, on Solaris the manual page for f77 says -r8 should double the default size, making INTEGER 8. I still get a warning with the source above about the literal being too large, and the printed value is not the literal. (But I don't know Fortran so I'm not sure what it's meant to do.) Hi Austin, Incidentally, simply rebuilding the acct package against the new header files is a little tricky, since the ./configure script uses sys/acct.h in preference to linux/acct.h Did you manage to build a acct package for 2.1.96? If so, could I get it from you? Cheers, Thomas -- To UNSUBSCRIBE, email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject of unsubscribe. Trouble? Contact [EMAIL PROTECTED]
