Hi, thanks for your comments. I have in the mean time decided that plasma discover is probably not the correct tool to maintain a Debian system and will continue to recommend using the command line tools or synaptic if a clickable frontend is absolutely desired by the local user even if KDE is being used. Package management tool
Hi, on my new notebook I am trying to do more administrative tasks in graphical tools to be able to answer beginners' questions in the unix user group. That also means package management, which I usually do with apt on the command line. KDE Discover seems to not quite the package management tool I am looking for. It only says that my Debian unstable offers like 2000 packages for installation (the notebook alone has 2400 packages installed), it says that the installation only has 240 packages installed. And it cannot find the firefox browser. (1) Am I holding KDE Discover wrong? (2) If KDE Discover is not what I am looking for, what is the recommended way to do package management, install, deinstall, configure, purge Debian packages from the Debian archive on a KDE system? Canonical way to start spice-vdagent?
Hi, I am running KDE inside a test VM which gets accessed via virt-manager or virt viewer with spice, qxl etc. To get seamless session resizing in that setup, I need to run spice-vdagent as the user logging into KDE. Isnt this supposed to happen automatically? If so, which package should get the bug report for not doing that? What would be the canonical way to set spice-vdagent to be autostarted? Is it ok to configure that in Systemd Settings => Autostart or is there are more elegant way? Greetings Marc -- ----- Marc Haber | "I don't trust Computers. Yes. Do apt upgrade to get the easy changes, try it again after it finished. If it still wants to change something, THEN try apt full-upgrade AND look what apt is suggesting to do. Use your own judgement whether to allow apt full-upgrade to do what it intends to do. You may also apt install manually some packages that apt upgrade won't touch to see what the problem is. In many cases, it's just the change from libfooX to libfooX+1 with a handful of affected packages, so you can allow it togo ahead, but sometimes it's something like the current situation that would deinstall half of your system. There is a discussion in the KDE bug ticket that seems to make sense to me. kdesu is exploiting a vulnerability in sudo that we fixed by forcing the pty. If we don't want to lose kdesu's functionality, we need either fixing kdesu so that is uses "legal" methods to use sudo, or we need to re-open the vulnerability to allow unmodified kdesu to work. This is kdesu's vulnerability now ;-) I would love to see kdesu fixed in some future, so that the "insecure" sudo rule can be removed. It would be an idea to ship the file with the rule commented out by default so that every local admin can cause their own vulnerability, but that'd probable cause a new avalanche of "kdesu broken" bug reports. > I’m no security expert at all but if I read the CVE description correctly, > the issue is with the su'ed command being able to escape the su user > session. > Is it OK in this case because kdesu is used to gain root from non-root and > so escaping the su session only gives you back the original non-root user > rights ? Package: akonadi-server Version: 4:21.12.3-2 Severity: normal Hi, to see whether KDE Wayland works better when started via gdm3 instead of sddm (spoiler: No, same way of broken as with sddm), I exchanged sddm with gdm3. The desktop right-click menu works now, and one can now leave the Plasma Wayland session. Ctrl-F2 works as well, so I can now start applications which seem to work alright. When I start a konsole, there is no ssh-agent (probably as there is no X session, what is the mechanism to have ssh-agent in a Wayland session?), and when I manually start an ssh-agent, connect it to my yubikey and then ssh to a server, I don't get the prompt asking for my confirmation to use the key. Hence, no connection. I also do not have anything that matches "wayland" in system-settings. My machine was built 2020, has a Ryzen 5 Pro 4650G CPU, I am using the builtin GPU, amdgpu, I have Debian unstable and a recent kernel. The following wayland-related packages are installed in addition to a reasonably complete and current KDE from today: kwayland-data, kwayland-integration, kwin-wayland, kwin-wayland-backend-drm, libkf5waylandclient5, libkf5waylandserver5, libkwaylandserver5, libqt5waylandclient5, libqt5waylandcompositor5, libva-wayland2, libwayland-client0, libwayland-cursor0, libwayland-egl1, libwayland-server0, plasma-wayland-protocols, plasma-workspace-wayland, qtwayland5, and xwayland. No battery in tray, battery widget says "no batteries"
Hi, on my notebook, a Thinkpad X260 running Debian unstable, the battery widget has vanished from the tray. The "Battery and Brightness" widget added to the panel shows a battery with a red cross, hovering gives the message "No Batteries available". tlp-stat --battery sees both batteries just fine. Is this a bug in current KDE, or am I probably missing some packages to find out? Where does the battery try icon look for battery states? Hi, I tried Wayland recently. Looked ok, but was hardly usable. The Panels show, but don't accept any mouse clicks (neither left nor right). Bug#993723: Could not enter folder tags
Package: dolphin Version: 4:21.08.1-1 Severity: minor Hi, thanks for taking great care of KDE! The updates in sid after the bullseye release were painless and smooth. Great work. On one of my systems, dolphin started to complain "Could not enter folder tags:/". I googled and found https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=154=171518. The suggested fix, balooctl purge, solved the issue for me. If the package could not do this automatically, it could at least be documented somewhere so that people know. That is really really good news, thanks for the update! I am especially glad that things are going forward as a team effort and that the team has at least one VERY experienced DD. Thank you all for doing this. Please keep people updated about your progress and especially the state of the experimental packages, I have a test notebook that I don't mind breaking occasionally, so I can do testing if the packages are in a state when trying them makes sense. Re: Status of Plasma 5.18/5.19?
Hi, more than two months ago, Jeremy Potter asked a valid question. On Sat, Jun 27, 2020 at 05:08:48PM -0700, Jeremy Potter wrote: > Debian Sid is still on Plasma 5.17, meanwhile 5.18 LTS and 5.19 have > already been released with 5.20 around the corner. Is there anything I can do to help? I'm new > to Debian packaging but I've done packaging for another distro and I'm > willing to learn. This resulted in an, eh, exchange of polite and less than polite words, but not in an answer that "normal people" (and that includes me as a DD with nearly two decades of experience) would understand. Yes, Debian sid/testing is not a rolling release, but a monster like KDE Plasma will most probably need months to stabilize and migrate. If the repeated "is not a rolling release" means that people think that it would work to do one upload two weeks before the bullseye freeze, I violently disagree. KDE in Debian unstable hasn't seen an update in more than a year, we're two upstream releases behind. This is not only a pity for all those people using Debian unstable, it is also driving away people to Ubuntu or KDE Neon, therefore reducing testing personpower shuold new packages be uploaded to Debian at some time. Packaging bugs that happened on a system that probably has seen crossgrades from Debian unstable to some Ubuntu and back are going to be much harder to triage than if they were from a pure Debian unstable system. Frankly, I don't care about personal beefs here, I care about Debian and it's users. If there is a conflict, I urge all participants to take one big step back and re-evaluate what of a work base is still left there, and see what can be done to get KDE Plasma packaging in the future. From what I see, all sides to have some deficiencies in diplomacy of communication, but as responsible volunteers taking care of a HUGE software package, one of the MAJOR desktop environments in the world of Free Software, there is probably not much room for personal quarrels. Please consider making a list of things that need doing, with precise description of the work, possible more exact then "please write quality patches" or "don't break Debian". Packaging of KDE Plasma needs to speed itself up NOW, or Debian bullseye will either ship with a blatantly outdated version of KDE Plasma, or without KDE Plasma at all. Both those possibilities look less than attractive for the project. I have a somewhat difficult and abrasive personality myself, so I'll try to shut up in the discussion that might follow this e-mail, but I feel like somebody needed to put a gavel on the table and remind the people in charge not ony of their rights as package maintainers, but also of their responsibility as members of Debian and the Free Software Community. Please don't break KDE and don't harm Debian. Greetings Marc -- ----- Marc Haber | "I don't trust Computers. When I had this issue on a second machine, all it needed to log in to lxqt, print (successfully), log out again, log in to KDE and print again (successfully). So the "good" change that lxqt did was actually a persistent change that also "repaired" KDE. > I think print-manager contains the gui bits that lets you handle a > printer in a plasma desktop, but I don't think it tries to set anything > up on login. What package is that from? I am not aware of using any graphical printing interface. If I remember correctly, KDE 3's really nice graphical printer management capablities went away during the KDE 3 => KDE SC 4 "migration" and didn't return ever since. #887495, cupsd not finding printer, KDE plays a role here
Hi, I would like to point your kind attention to #887495, an issue in CUPS that was first reported half a year ago. Sadly, the CUPS maintainers didn't bother to do anything visible. The issue is that cups accept a print job and the complains in the webinterface that it cannot find the printer, and succests that cups-browsed my be the issue. In my thinking, this is an issue as far away from the Desktop as I can imagine. However, it looks like KDE plays a role in the issue: Log out of KDE, log in with a different desktop environment, retry the print job, and see CUPS work. Log out of the different desktop environment, log in to KDE, try printing, see CUPS still work. I do not have the slightest idea which component of KDE may play a role in this, hence I am only carrying this to a mailing list instead of reassigning the bug report. How to disable KDE Network-Manager integration for testing
Hi, on my notebooks, Network-manager has begun doing strange things. For example, I do have multiple entries for the WLANs that I regularly use. I guess that a new entry is generated every time I connect to the network. Has somebody seen this phenomenon as well on Debian unstable with KDE? To find out whether KDE or Network-Manager is at fault, I would like to disable KDE's n-m integration for a testing period of time, resorting to managing n-m with nmtui or nmcli. Is removing plasma-nm sufficient to severe the connection between KDE and n-m? Greetings Marc -- - Marc Haber | "I don't trust Computers. I realized that phonon needs ported libs as well, after instaling the phonon5in4foo libraries sound is fine. Other than that, I am having a déjà vu regarding important functions missing from the current release, although not so bad as with KDE 4. Most prominent absences are - Screensavers (with the additional fun of the canonical solution being use xscreensaver if you want something shiny instead of a blank screen) and Blanks screen just fine here. Make sure powerdevil package is installed. Yes. I want my clock back. Otherwise, I hate to say that I do not (yet?) see any substantial improvement over KDE 4 other than it's qt5 now (which is probably important). It feels snappier for me. But sure, that is no hard data. I don't care about snappy if so many features are missing. Some long standing annoying bugs got fixed. None of the ones that annoy me every day for years. - It is still not possible to sensibly use a vertical panel, which is quite important on small displays such as my 1366x768 panel which is not high enough anyway and one doesn't want to waste Y coordinate pixels with panels. A vertical panel is either unuseable because the task manager fields are too small to have any valueable contents or, on a wider panel, the icons get scaled up according to panel width so that they fill up too much of the panel space. It is obviously still not possible to place small icons side-by-side to each other in a wide vertical panel. I use a vertical panel. Granted the K menu icon is very large. The K menu icon and all single icon launchers. For placing icons side by side I think I used some launcher widget as you mentioned. Do you still use one? Which one? It may be that not all widgets are packages yet for Plasma 5. Maybe there are still some missing compared to what upstream delivers. I never said that this missing stuff was left out by the packagers. It is just upstream not caring about the people who use their software. Shipping a picture viewer with an incompatible kipi interface without having kipi plugins compatible with that interface is, well, unfriendly. Re: So I have a Plasma 5 desktop!
Hi, I have made the transition on my small notebook, the one with the tiny 1366x768 display. The update to plasma 5 was a breeze compared to the pain of converting the box to a SuSE-like btrfs setup with subvolumes for root, usr, var and a bunch of other subtrees that now allow me to go back to a snapshot without losing other data. I wouldn't have dared the transition at this point otherwise. On Sun, Jul 12, 2015 at 12:13:02PM +0200, Michael Schuerig wrote: Anyway, some features appear to have been lost in the upgrade. Here's what I'm missing so far: * Skype and others don't show up in the system tray any more. Apparently, I need to install sni-qt which isn't packaged, yet. See https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=289t=124670 That's a pretty big transition, especially for the background that sni-qt is dead upstream and won't come up in Debian any time soon. * Plasma Search, the successor to KRunner, doesn't remember the history. (Really? :-O) * The Veromix plasmoid doesn't work anymore and there doesn't seem to be a suitable replacement to control PulseAudio from a panel. But, do you have sound? I seem to have lost sound completely. In System Settings, all I can see is my hardware devices in Audio Hardware Setup. Both the Device Preferences and Backend tabs don't offer anything to be selected. Pulseaudio is installed, and both mpg321 and paplay on the command line work. Most prominent absences are - Screensavers (with the additional fun of the canonical solution being use xscreensaver if you want something shiny instead of a blank screen) and - the QuickLaunch plasmoid, which allowed placement of launchers in multiple rows inside the same panel. I would like to have some feedback to replace QuickLaunch without wasting too much screen real estate since normal launchers take about twice the panel space theat QuickLaunch used to take. I hope there is some neat new way to do things in plasma 5. Otherwise, I hate to say that I do not (yet?) see any substantial improvement over KDE 4 other than it's qt5 now (which is probably important). - Konsole's profile handling is still queer regarding window sizes, but since konsole's author considered that a feature since KDE 4.0, I guess we won't see any improvement here. - It is still not possible to sensibly use a vertical panel, which is quite important on small displays such as my 1366x768 panel which is not high enough anyway and one doesn't want to waste Y coordinate pixels with panels. I appreciate the Debian KDE team's work and acknowledge that most of the issues mentioned here are upstream issues that Debian cannot solve. Bug#775765: does weird things on suspend via K menu
Package: kde-plasma-desktop Version: 5:84 Severity: normal Hi, this may be related to systemd. Things have gotten so complex since then that I am at a loss about how to find out which actual component is to blame. I hope that someone more knowledgeable will be able to properly triage and reassign this. It may be possible that this is a duplicate, which I was not able to determine myself for the same reasons. When I tell my system to suspend to RAM via K Menu - Leave - Suspend to RAM, it properly goes to sleep. However, when I wake it up again, I find myself at a useable, unlocked desktop with a dialog open saying that authentication is necessary to suspend the system. When I enter my password in that dialog, the system goes to sleep again. The ugly bug is: When I tell the system to suspend, it suspends twice in a row. The security relevant bug is: When I tell the system to suspend, and leave the system alone in this state, assuming that my session was locked before going to sleep, I actually lose my session to anybody able to hit the power button since my session is not locked any more before sending the system to sleep. I hope that someone more knowledgeable will be able to properly triage and reassign this. It may be possible that this is a duplicate, which I was not able to determine myself for the same reasons. I have set my KDE in Energy Saving - System Settings so that the screen is locked when I close the lid while the system is on AC power. It is set to suspend on lid close only On Battery and On Low Battery. It looks like the system honors these settings. At least, the moon symbol does not come up when the lid is closed. After opening the lid again, I briefly see my desktop before the sceen lock kicks in. This may be an accidental information disclosure bug. Additionally, a WLAN reconnect seems to happen. The plasma-nm applet shows a swirl and I am prompted for the KWallet password. This is really important since I guess that network connections get severed in this situation. When I tell my system not to suspend on lid close, I do expect it to stay online as well. Kmail composer freezing on unstable?
Hi, I have Debian sid and kde 4.5.1 from debian-qt-kde. As I understand, the experimental repository does not have kdepim, so my kmail is still from kdepim 4.4. This setup has been working very well for months. On Friday, I updated the system for the first time since the squeeze release, and my Kmail has started to misbehave: When composing a new message, Kmail freezes and does not take any more keystrokes. This happens during various times during the composition process, sometimes right at the beginning, but if one has come through to hitting Alt-Enter to send the mail, this is the latest point at which Kmail _always_ freezes without sending the message. Is this a known phenomenon with, possibly, an already available workaround? I really really hate Thunderbird... Greetings Marc -- - Marc Haber | I don't trust Computers. And, to make things worse, ksysguardd's package description suggests that it is only needed to monitor a _remote_ system. True, so if we want kdelaptop solves the problem we should use a solution as the one proposed by Sune, or alternatively we would need to get a verbose hibernate log and analyse it, increasing the LogVerbosity value up to 9 in the hibernate common.conf located at /etc/hibernate.
