Attached is a diff for squeeze. This kernel boots and runs fine on
arne.debian.org, just tested. The diff between the new config.mv78xx0
and config.orion5x is tiny (mostly comments), but they're not
  compatible as a single flavour:

Right. But I look at these two configurations and cannot understand the
 reasoning behind the driver selection.

They have PCI, but a lot of PCI drivers disabled. I assume this is
because there are no PCI slots? If that is the case then there are a
whole lot more PCI drivers that cannot be used and should be disabled,
which will cut the compile time down significantly.

Ah, no. They have PCI slots and could probably support most PCI
things, I just didn't consider that so far, basing on config.orion5x.
Is it preferred to add everything that might work for these boards, or
acceptable to go for a more minimal config to help reduce build time?

 Ping?

I will apply your configuration to unstable now, but I think we need to
review which drivers should be enabled. I realise you're trying to
match the existing 'orion5x' but let's not compound the mistake.

OK, no problem. Let's talk about that at some point soon. Or... is it
just as simple as adding all the PCI-based options?

If you still want this flavour to be added to stable as well then, as
with any stable update, you need to open a bug report.

Fine.

Your descriptions weren't consistent. The flavour is 'mv78xx0' but you
used 'DB-78x00-DP' (1 x) in the long description. Then the short
description said 'Feroceon', but that's just the CPU core and it is also
used in the kirkwood and orion5x flavours. So I changed those all to
'78xx0'.

Cool, thanks!

I'm a bit sceptical that it is correct, but passing on to Ben Hutchings,
as I never used external modules. He did quite some cleanup in this
confusing area, lately for the upcoming debian release.

Bug#658618: 3c589_cs: media types 10base2 and 10baseT are switched

2012-02-04 Thread Sebastian
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.1.8-2
Severity: normal

When using /sbin/ifconfig to configure the media type of a 3Com PCMCIA network
device, the parameters are switched around.

ifconfig eth1 media 10base2 selects 10baseT while
ifconfig eth1 media 10baseT selects 10base2.

The driver prints out the correct interface in dmesg after running these
commands.

Did you upgrade the kernel at the same time? If so, what were the

Client and server were both upgraded from 1:1.2.5-3 to 1:1.2.5-4 on the
same day.

ls -l shows the x bit is still set, but I get permission denied
when I try to run them, and bash's autocompletion also seems to know
they're not executable because it doesn't expand them when I press Tab.
I've tried adding 'exec' to fstab options but it didn't help. The same
thing happens whether I use mount or pmount as a normal user or mount as
root.

Are all 'x' permission bits set? Do you also have read permission for
the executables?

~ $ ls -l /media/htpc/hdvb/mscript.py

~ $ /media/htpc/hdvb/mscript.py
bash: /media/htpc/hdvb/mscript.py: Permission denied

I overlooked the nobody nogroup before. Is that normal? The UIDs are
the same on both PCs and I can write to the file despite the discrepancy
in the user and group names.

Here I have to restart the idmapd service to get the names properly.

Well it looks like I won't be able to run a build until Monday as

Re: [bisected] Unstable desktop experience with kernel 2.6.38. PulseAudio involved

2012-02-04 Thread Émeric Maschino
Hi,

Just to let you know that, as could have been guessed from my initial
post (http://lists.debian.org/debian-ia64/2012/01/msg00016.html),
PulseAudio is involved. Uninstalling pulseaudio,
pulseaudio-esound-compat, pulseaudio-module-x11, pulseaudio-utils and
gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio packages fixes the issue. Obviously, you
get no more sound :-(.

Is there something in PulseAudio source code that hasn't been updated
(maybe only on IA-64?) following commit
37a9d912b24f96a0591773e6e6c3642991ae5a70 (futex: Sanitize
cmpxchg_futex_value_locked API)?

The bad news: I can't provide more information at this time as all the
programs that I've tried to ran through gdb (most notably iceweasel
and gnome-terminal as they were my easy to reproduce scenarii) are
receiving SIGTRAP signal, and bt full reports No symbol table info
available. I however have debug packages installed.

It doesn't look like the return value (r8) is actually being set beyond
initialized to 0. If there is some ia64 instruction that modifies it, GCC
doesn't know about it from the inline assembly (r8 doesn't appear in the
inputs/outputs list). From looking at the x86 version (agh, inline asm is
hard to parse), it does modify the return value based on whether the
comparison was a success or not, and the return value is certainly used by
 the callers.

obviously updated my Testing system to current
  linux-image-3.1.0-1-mckinley_3.1.8-2_ia64.deb.

Well, graphical desktop experience is _unstable_. When I say desktop
experience, I'm talking about basic desktop tasks, not fancy OpenGL
rendering. I have at least two reproducible scenari (I'm running Gnome
  Classic):
  - random X restart while typing into a GNOME terminal window
  - Iceweasel killed when I try to click on the Back button or while
trying to click on the Edit menu.

For the latter one, I managed to get a stack trace with gdb, before
gdb itself core dumped (huge core available if interested!) or X is
restarted... It seems that something goes wrong with PulseAudio when
  running kernel 3.1:

  Program received signal SIGABRT, Aborted.

Rebooting my Testing system with good old kernel 2.6.38-5 brings a
  stable desktop experience back.

I've performed regression testing: the issue is already there with
  linux-image-2.6.39-rc4-mckinley_2.6.39~rc4-1~experimental.1_ia64.deb,
  the immediate successor to
  linux-image-2.6.38-2-mckinley_2.6.38-5_ia64.deb in
  snapshot.debian.org. Latest available
  linux-image-3.2.0-rc7-mckinley_3.2~rc7-1~experimental.1_ia64.deb still
  provides unstable desktop experience.

Does this sound familiar to someone? Is this problem already known and
reported somewhere or is it worth filing a bug and going the git
  bisect route?

Strange, I remember seeing this request and also checking that the bug
was reprodicible without loaded virtualbox modules. Did I just forget to
to write a reply?...

Unfortunately, now I do not have any 32 bit installation of squeeze

reported is several thousands kilometers away from my current location.

I have just tested 2.6.32 from squeeze on a 64 bit installation of

Not sure what would have triggered this. I'd like it to be fixed by
v2.6.32.42~84 (block: add proper state guards to __elv_next_request)
or some nearby fix applied in 2.6.32-36, but the symptoms don't match
so well.

Anyway, if you are able to reproduce this again (by using 2.6.32-35
from snapshot.debian.org, or if you get access to the relevant
machine again), that would be very useful.

Ciao,
Jonathan

suspending and resuming a lot, it happens once to me, that the network
device did not come back correctly.

I experienced this problem (only) three times until now. If I remember
correctly the last time with 3.2.1. I still do not know how to reproduce
this.

The work around is to unplug and replug the network cable or to unload
the module and load it again.

Some of the RTL81xx gigabit Ethernet controllers need a firmware patch
to be reliable. I can't tell whether you have one of these. Are there
any kernel log messages about requesting a firmware file for the NIC?
If so, does installing firmware-realtek fix the problem?

There are no Linux messages requesting the firmware.

 OK.

  And not being able
to trigger I probably just have to wait that it happens again. Can I
increase some log level to capture more information next time? Or since
this could be a firmware bug Linux cannot do anything about this?

No, it's probably something that can be fixed in the driver.

That sounds promising. It would be great if this could be fixed. Please
tell me how I can get you better debugging information next time this
happens.

Right, this variant doesn't need a firmware patch.

Please can you re-send your bug report to:

Be sure to include the log messages from your second mail.

Please find the messages from the Linux kernel ring buffer (`dmesg`)

I take it's not a problem in a Debian 3.0 kernel (since the culprit
patch only appeared in 3.1-rc1). We will submit the relevant
patch(es) to the 3.2.x stable kernel.

Fixed in 3.2.3. Kernel team, please apply the following patch to mark
it so.

Bug#658662: drm/i915: no signal via DisplayPort on Sandy Bridge since Linux 3.2

2012-02-04 Thread Peter Colberg
Package: linux-2.6
Version: 3.2.2-1
Severity: important
Tags: upstream

Dear Maintainer,

Since upgrading to linux-image-3.2.0-1-amd64, an external display
connected via DisplayPort to a Sandy Bridge onboard graphics card
stopped working, and instead turns off reporting “DP no signal”.

With linux-image-3.1.0-1-amd64, the same display connected via the
DisplayPort works fine. After powering both the display and the
machine, the display first turns on when the i915 kernel module is
loaded upon boot. It shows the console with boot messages at the
maximum display resolution (1920x1080). Then the X server starts, and
the external display switches to a lower resolution (1024x768), which
seems to be the default setting of the X server. After login, I
manually switch to the maximum resolution (1920x1080) using the
command “xrandr --output DP1 --auto”.

With linux-image-3.2.0-1-amd64, after powering both the display and
the machine, the display remains dark during boot, even when the
i915 kernel module is loaded. The display first turns on only when
the X server is loaded, with the default resolution 1024x768. After
login, I manually switch to 1920x1080, but then the display reports
“DP no signal” and turns *off*.

To summarize: The external display connected via DisplayPort works
fine with Linux 3.1, while, with Linux 3.2, it works with lower
(non-native) resolutions and fails with the maximum (native)
resolution.

I noticed one peculiarity: It is possible to have a working external
display by booting into Linux 3.1 first, and then rebooting into
Linux 3.2 *without interrupting the power supply of the display*.
However, as soon as I power-cycle the display while under Linux 3.2,
it stops working again.

There is a recent thread by Keith Packard with DisplayPort-related patches:

https://lkml.org/lkml/2012/1/25/204

I tested both a kernel with only patch 1/2, as well as a kernel with
both patches 1/2 and 2/2 applied, based on the Debian kernel source
and using the test-patches script. Both kernels showed the same faulty
behaviour, i.e. the external display remains dark at the native
resolution.

If there are other potential fixes I could test, please let me know.

Thanks,
Peter

If I understand correctly, you are reporting a speed regression

Could you try versions 2.6.34-1~experimental.2 and

hopefully narrow down the regression range?
