Bug#712050: linux: Apparmor not working with kernels after wheezy

2013-06-12 Thread falconbird
Package: linux
Severity: important

Dear maintainer,

In Linux versions after stable wheezy, AppArmor is not working, as it should be
- rules are ok,
but it's impossible to control it - it complains that no compitablity patch is
in kernel, or it not have enough
rules. It's ok in Ubuntu, but the version of Apparmor from Ubuntu still not
working with this kernel. Please, fix this.

Thank you

Already fixed in svn. I just didn't think to check whether orion5x
was also close to its limit when trimming iop32x and ixp4xx.

This seems poised to prevent yet another kernel version
from trickling down into testing because of a FTBFS on exactly one
architecture. Given this, I was wondering whether armel will be
declassified as a release architecture or, alternately, whether the ARM
porters have been called to help?

I did recently discuss the future of armel with some of the ARM
porters on IRC. It's not going away, but the flavours supporting
really small machines (iop32x and ixp4xx) may be removed. There is
also some work upstream that would allow kirkwood, mv87xx0 and orion5x
to be combined. This would reduce armel to just 2 flavours which
would result in much faster builds. It would also put more size
pressure on orion5x and we might have to drop support for the one
machine with a 1.5 MB partition (most of them have ~2 MB partitions
according to comments where this is defined).

The 'wheezy' kernel has some backward compatibility code to support
old AppArmor userland. This code will never be part of the upstream
kernel and we don't want to keep supporting it. AppArmor userland
must be updated to version 2.8 (I think), but this isn't yet in
Debian.

(AppArmor maintainers: we can add a versioned 'Breaks' to the kernel
if this would be helpful.)

Noted. I've just been wondering what's the point of pushing so many

repeatedly fail to build on the exact same architecture, since it spoils
the whole point of enforcing a quick transition to testing via a high

Linux frequently fails to build on one or more architectures. I don't
think happens much more frequently on armel than on others.
Unfortunately as this is just after wheezy release we never uploaded
release candidates of 3.8 or 3.9 in experimental which would have
allowed finding and fixing these problems earlier.

Critical bug fixes should be submitted for inclusion in kernel.org
stable branches. And backporting new hardware support to unstable
outside of a freeze period is generally unnecessary, as each new
upstream release will quickly be uploaded there.

If you really want to provide a tested backport from net-next to 3.9
then I'm not about to refuse your patches. But it would help many more
Debian users if you would concentrate on backporting to our stable
release.

This is a build-time assertion that the caller is passing a compile-time
constant for offset. If the assertion fails it triggers this weird
'size of unnamed array is negative' error.

But nothing in asm-offsets.c will be calling it, so this doesn't make
sense to me.

You forgot to attach your .config.

When booting with 3.9 I get no sound on headphones (it works through
speakers). It also doesn't work with 3.10-rc4 from experimental.

It works with 3.2 and 3.8.

Please let me know if you need more information, I'll be glad to provide it.

This bug seems to have been fixed when I upgraded to
 linux-image-3.10-rc5-amd64.

OK, closing accordingly. (Note, this doesn't it won't also be fixed in
an update to 3.9, but we will need to know exactly what the fix is
before doing that.)

Ben.
