Bug#974166: linux-image-5.9.0-1-amd64: The system goes black when trying to boot graphical mode

2020-11-10 Thread Alejandro Colomar
Package: src:linux
Version: 5.9.1-1
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: alx.manpa...@gmail.com

Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

   * What led up to the situation?

When I upgreeaded from kernel 5.6 to 5.7 a long time ago, my system
broke.
I first saw some firmware errors when booting.
But when I fixed those firmware errors by adding non-free and contrib
repos,
and installing firmware-linux,
those errors disapeared.
Now it simply goes black at some point during the boot.
If I boot with linux 5.6, however, everything runs fine.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
 ineffective)?
   * What was the outcome of this action?
   * What outcome did you expect instead?

Ineffective: Upgrading the kernel to 5.8, or 5.9.
None of the kernels >= 5.7 work.

Worked: Run with kernel 5.6 (or older).

Ineffective: Clean install from DI-alpha2.
This provides two kernels: 5.4 (works) and 5.9 (doesn't work).

I also tried installing firmware directly from kernel.org:

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git
sudo make install
but it didn't fix it.

Bug#974157: linux-image-5.9.0-2-686-pae: prints incorrect highmem if memory >= 4GB

2020-11-10 Thread Ryutaroh Matsumoto
Package: src:linux
Version: 5.9.6-1
Severity: minor

Dear Maintainer,

This symptom is observed in a qemu-system-i386 guest.
When 4GB or more memory is given by -m option to qemu,
the amounts of highmem are printed as

[0.021084] 5656MB HIGHMEM available.
[0.021085] 487MB LOWMEM available.
[0.260926] Memory: 3968828K/4158180K available (7846K kernel code, 770K
rwdata, 2372K rodata, 868K init, 480K bss, 189352K reserved, 0K cma-reserved,
3649456K highmem)

Two inconsistent amounts are printed as above.
I do not observe this when I give 2GB memory to qemu-system-i386.

There seems no actual inconvenience by this, though.

Best regards, Ryutaroh Matsumoto

Bug#932250: random segfaults

2020-11-10 Thread Bernhard Übelacker

Hello Paul,
is it possible to install the package systemd-coredump on
the systems showing this crash?

Then after the next crash in the output of 'journalctl --no-pager'
should the segfault appear followed by a backtrace
that you could forward to this bug.

This should clarify which function calls lead to the crash.

More information on improving that information additionally
are here: https://wiki.debian.org/HowToGetABacktrace

Kind regards,
Bernhard

Bug#932250: random segfaults

2020-11-10 Thread Paul Kerry

Hi Bernhard and thanks for the follow up.

I've not had anymore segfaults since reporting this issue last year.

I'd still go for the hypothesis of it being a xfce related issue which I
linked too before:

https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=934105

This can be alleviated by installing packages without xfce running or by
repackaging pre-built packages and removing .desktop files within those
packages.

For me, this is certainly not a linux-image-amd64 bug.

Cheers
Paul.
