after upgrading my working wake-on-lan configuration on a Dell Optiplex
GX150 from lenny to squeeze, wake-on-lan does not work anymore.
The Dell has an onboard ethernet:
01:0c.0 Ethernet controller: 3Com Corporation 3c905C-TX/TX-M [Tornado] (rev 78)
using driver 3c59x.
The chipset is Intel
I haven't noticed any panics since Linux 2.6.38. (Linux 3.0 has also
been fine so far.)

I too have issues with this problem.
For all of our Dell PowerEdge servers I've needed to use the rootdelay
parameter.
Ages ago I used to have it set to rootdelay=10
Then a number of months ago after some upgrades the failure was happening again.
I had to bump it up to rootdelay=20
