dh = 9 builds strange debug-pkg

2012-06-04 Thread Björn Esser
Hello!

Why does dh = 9 (in paticular the latest version in sid) put the
debugging-symbols in
usr/lib/debug/.build-id/$(2-Byte-Random)/$(Random).debug when building
a lib with multi-arch-support?

The package uses straight debhelper. No tweaks in debian/rules, but
some usual override_*-indep and of course

override_dh_strip:
dh_strip --dbg-package=libsomewhat-dbg

added.

Best Regards,
  Björn

Re: dh = 9 builds strange debug-pkg

2012-06-04 Thread Björn Esser
See #642158, for an explanation. The short story is, it's easier to
support build-id (from a gdb PoV) than N+1 multi-arched paths.

It should not cause any issues.

Thanks for your answer.

So everything is fine as it gets done then, I think.

BR,
  Björn Esser

Bug#661507: RFS: libblocxx/2.3.0~svn544-1 [ITP] BloCxx - C++ Framework for Application Development

2012-06-03 Thread Björn Esser
Hello Bart!

The package is no longer at mentors.  What happened ?

I just recompiled on recent Sid and the result was broken then, even
the testsuite segfaults. Since I'm not sure it's a problem with gcc
4.7 or the hardening flags (or both), I removed it, since I don't want
to provide some crappy stuff on mentors.
I'm currently looking forward to do some more research on this issue,
find it's reason, if possible fix it and have a fixed / working
package uploaded then.

When a fixed package is uploaded to mentors, I'll drop you a line.

I hope you would like to ITS, since as long it was on mentors no one
was intended to.

Best Regards,
  Björn Esser

Hello Boris!

I just investigated a bit inside the source-tar doing this:

cd doc
qmake
make
./doxyfilter -g
sed -i -e's/GENERATE_LATEX.*= NO/GENERATE_LATEX = YES/'\
- -e's/GENERATE_MAN.*= NO/GENERATE_MAN = YES/' ./Doxyfile
doxygen ./Doxyfile
cd ..

there you go having freshly generated docs as html, LaTeX and man-pages.

Hope this helps you a bit.

Feel free to contact me if there are issues/questions.

Cheers,
  Björn

Well, there's nowhere in the DFSG or copyright (i'm assuming)
that says that it must be in some format X. If the original
source is, in fact, HTML, there's no problem.

The idea is that you communicate the program in a preferable
format which can be used (or in some cases, actually is) the
 thing you distribute.

If the docs were generated, and they have a better source format,
you should encourage them to use that.

The relevant Debian policy is DFSG point 2[1] (Must include
 source code) :)

 Thank you for a reply.

Perhaps I wrote unclear. In few steps: 1) There is some HTML
documentation [1] in upstream tarball. 2) This documentation was
generated using Doxygen. 3) This documentation was packaged in
package libqxmpp-doc as is. 4) I can not find in tarball the
necessary sources for Doxygen and instructions how to generate this
 documentation manually.

The question is: should I make a bug report in this case?

I am not subscribed to debian-devel list, so I've asked here.

 Best regards, Boris

 Thanks all for answers.

You're welcome.

I was searching for: /doxyfilter -g This command generates Doxyfile
 which is necessary for Doxygen.

However I can't find anywhere in the Policy that it's an actual
requirement to re-generate this kind of files at build-time.

So do I. That's why I've asked here should I make a bug report or
 not?

I would say no, because putting something like this inside
debian/rules will (re)generate the documentation (html, LaTeX,

Well, that might not be the fastest way, but the following works just
fine to generate the initrd; all you need is debootstrap, binfmt-support
and qemu-user-static installed (I will assume you want and armel
kernel/initrd in this example, but the same should apply for other
 architectures):

   debootstrap --arch=armel --foreign --variant=minbase sid rootfs-armel-sid
   cp /usr/bin/qemu-arm-static rootfs-armel-sid/usr/bin/
   chroot rootfs-armel-sid/
   debootstrap/debootstrap --second-stage
echo deb ftp://ftp.debian.org/debian/ sid main etc/apt/sources.list
   apt-get update
(You may want to mount /dev, /dev/pts /proc and /sys at this point.)
   apt-get install linux-image-versatile
(And umount anything you mounted here.)
   exit

You should now have and initrd image in rootfs-armel-sid/boot/.

That did do the trick! Everything runs smooth and fine now.

Thanks a lot to you!

The prebuild kernels don't ship any initrd and I'm not sure how to build
a suitable one on a different arch. Maybe there's some guide avail. for
this.
If you don't have other architectures available, you could just have your
package uploaded and see if it fails to build.
I'm no dd so where can I upload and try to build it, but
mentors.debian.net and wait until someone ITS it?
If it does, you'll have access to the full log, and then you can ask on one

Where / How to get in touch with those developers?

qemubuilder - are there precompiled kernel-images with ipv6 and ext3 support built-in

2012-03-11 Thread Björn Esser
Hello!

Are there any precompiled kernels for qemubuilder which have built-in
support for ipv6 and ext3 (and probably other nifty stuff) available?

Even better would be precompiled kernels which use the same
configuration as the debian buildd-network.

I did some research on the w³ and found nothing but out-dated stuff or
kernels without support for these built-in. Even the kernel images
provided by aurel32 [1] were not really suitable or didn't work at all.

Or do I really have to compile the kernel-images myself?

I need the images for testing package build on other than x86 / amd64
arches.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Björn Esser

the library I am working on in the moment (slalib,

C interface and some (performance) drawbacks. This library is GPL and
 meets the DFSG guidelines.

There is another version of this library available, where the (C)
sources are available (and put under GPL), but obfuscated, so that they
cannot go into main but would have to go into non-free. However, I
am thinking about packaging this version as well.

However, there would be a conflict for the library names. How would one
 solve this?

when packaging it for debian?

Shall the custom / replaced stuff be placed inside
debian/source/include-binaries?

Or should it be forked from upstream and seperately developed as
debian-native?

* Logging
* Strings
* Formatting
* Command line parsing
* Reference-counted objects

Newer versions of lintian (around 2.5.1 or so) will check direct
dependencies (that are built from the same source) if said dependencies
 are processed together.

So if you placed your manpage correctly in jailkit-common and jailkit
depends on jailkit-common, then lintian should find the manpage if you do:
  lintian jailkit.deb jailkit-common.deb

That's exactly what I'm doing, but lintian complains about missing
man-pages in jailkit (main-pkg).

Man-pages for all binaries are located under /usr/share/man/man8/ inside
the jailkit-common pkg.

Alternatively you can pass lintian the changes file and it will process
 both debs automatically as well.

Even here lintian complains about missing manpages in jailkit (main-pkg).

So what shall I try to get things fixed?

I'm just curious: what is this used for? Isn't YaST only used by SuSE?

YaST was licensed under GPLv2 somewhen in 2004/2005. So it can be used
by anyone and inside any distri, although it is currently on used in
(open)SuSE, yet.

yast2-devtools is the central-pkg, which is need to compile the
YaST-core and to develop and/or compile the modules which add functions
or config-tools to YaST [1] [2].

Since the effort of a GSoC-project, which made libYUI (I'll talk on that
later) independent of zypper (pkg-management in SuSE) [3]. It would be a
piece of cake to have the basic YaST-components to be ported to debian.

The YasT-modules themselves need to be modded or redevlopped for debian,
like make them use debconf, aptitude, dpkg or other debian-native tools
instead of SuSE-native ones.

libYUI (Yast User Interface) is a nifty lib to develop UIs using
ncurses, gtk and qt. The special about it is you only need only one pice
of code to get your UI work without having to worry about your tools is
run from console, gnome, kde or somewhat else [4]. It was initially
designed to make YaST's UI independent from the user's environment.

So I think YaST would be a piece software, which could bring debian to
larger audience by giving a way to setup daemons or system-settings in
an easy way, even when you're just using a console-based (server-)system

YaST has been liberated from its non-free origins a while ago. There
even was an approach to introduce it to Debian once [1]. So, in theory
you could run YaST on every distribution. Question remains whether you
really want that, as YaST's messing in configuration files definitively
breaks a random number of paragraphs in the Debian policy.

YaST itself isn't messing around in the confs. This is the problem of
SusE.config (which is called by several YaST-modules inside SusE).
SuSE.config is the more or less somewhat compound of debconf. So for
debian the modules need to be modded as stated above.

That said, I do not know at all, what yast2-devtools is used/needed for,
so I should perhaps shut up and let Björn answer.

What shall I do, when there's already a debian-dir inside the .orig.tar,
e.g. when upstream already package his/her program for ubuntu?

Can I safely remove the existing debian-dir from the .orig.tar?
What else can I do?

You would need to look at the final result ...

 Here are the complete files:

 postinst

 #!/bin/sh
 #DEBHELPER#
 set -e

 else
 /etc/init.d/jailkit start
 fi

 exit 0

 [...]

The #DEBHELPER# is there for a reason: it's for debhelper to put useful code
 in there. And that precisely will be this if [ -x /etc/init.d/jailkit ];
 then
 ... fi bit. Just use

 #!/bin/sh

 set -e

 if ! grep /usr/sbin/jk_chrootsh /etc/shells /dev/null; then \
   echo /usr/sbin/jk_chrootsh /etc/shells ;\
 fi

 #DEBHELPER#

and you should be fine. Same for your other file.

 Best,
 Michael

Need assistance in packaging / Brauche Hilfe bei der Erstellung von Paketen

2011-11-07 Thread Björn Esser
Hello everybody!

I need assistance in packaging, especially in how to write/create
man-pages, one source in multiple packages (e.g. somewhat (arch),
somewhat-doc(no-arch), somewhat-data (no-arch), etc.), removing
obsolete/not used files from the package and in how-to package libs
(libany, libany-dev, libany-doc, etc.). I hope someone would and could
help me doing so. If it would be someone with German as native (not
restricted to this, but my English is not that elaborated in rather
special technical-terms), it would be great.

Thanks to you in advance.

Best Regards,

Björn Esser.

Hallo zusammen!

Ich brauche Hilfe bei der Paket-Erstellung. Insbesondere, wie man
man-pages erstellt, ein Programm in mehrere Pakete aufteilt (z. B.
irgendwas (arch), irgendwas-doc (no-arch), irgendwas-data (no-arch),
etc.)

Hello Siegfried-Angel and kuLa!

Thank you for the provided information! I'll have a look at theese.

May I contact you, if I'll need further information?

2011/11/7 Siegfried-Angel Gevatter Pujals (RainCT) sgevat...@ubuntu.cat:
 Hi Björn,

Maybe someone else can give you more details, but in the meantime here
are some useful links (which should have more than enough information
to get you started if you're already familiar with packaging):

 2011/11/7 Björn Esser bjoern.es...@googlemail.com:
 how to write/create man-pages

 See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PackagingGuide/SupplementaryFiles#Man_Pages.

one source in multiple packages (e.g. somewhat (arch),
 somewhat-doc(no-arch), somewhat-data (no-arch), etc.), removing
obsolete/not used files from the package

I've found http://wiki.debian.org/PkgSplit, but that page lets it look
much more scary than it actually is. To generate multiple packages,
the usual procedure is having debian/rules install everything into
debian/tmp (instead of debian/binary-pkg-name), and then having
debian/binary-package-name.install (also .docs, .manpages, etc. if
needed) to copy the files you're interested in into the correct
 debian/binary-pkg-name directory.

Of course you'll also need additional source stanzas in debian/control
for each binary packages. If you're using debhelper 7 or CDBS they
should then handle the debian/rules part automatically.

 and in how-to package libs
 (libany, libany-dev, libany-doc, etc.)

 http://www.netfort.gr.jp/~dancer/column/libpkg-guide/libpkg-guide.html
 (also http://www.debian.org/doc/debian-policy/ch-sharedlibs.html)

 Hope this helps,
