Thanks! I'll take a look. I'm an experienced sysadmin, but I'm not a
developer; so I might need some help figuring this out. Can I email you

There is 'apt-cache show grml-live' available for Architecture: all.
If you want to contribute you can adapt ppc arch to the respective
FAI configuration and build your own grml-ppc-live system.

 Rick, et alia:

If indeed there is an effort afoot to create a bootable USB stick that
functions absent a bootable disk, I would recommend using Kali Linux.
This is both a Debian distribution and as well provisions a great many
utilities that might be useful in such a scenario as where there are
disks, they are unbootable but someone wishes to perform a forensic
inspection upon them in precedence to simply installing over them. I
have many times received more aged hardware and first looked to see
what "goodies" were left behind (even if someone thought they deleted
everything and did not zero out the disks).

The more general-purpose the "live" system can be the better.
Ideally, it should be possible to boot from the live CD/DVD, while
at the same time having a specially formatted USB stick inserted
which would provide "persistent" storage for the booted system --
leaving the disk drive(s) of the system untouched and available for
whatever work you want to do with them (e.g. backup and recovery.)
The "grml" live boot for i386/amd64 is a great example of what I'd

like.

Not able to install yaboot into debian live image

2013-02-21 Thread Matias Kreder
Hi,

I'm having some troubles to get a live cd image to boot into qemu
ppc64 emulator with IBM OpenFirmware. I will also need to use this
image on a IBM pServer.

I used the Debian live build tool to create the .iso image.
The options that Debian build system uses to generate the .iso are:

yaboot)
GENISOIMAGE_OPTIONS=${GENISOIMAGE_OPTIONS} -r --iso-level 2
--netatalk -hfs -probe -map
GENISOIMAGE_OPTIONS=${GENISOIMAGE_OPTIONS}
binary/yaboot/hfs.map
--chrp-boot -part -no-desktop
GENISOIMAGE_OPTIONS=${GENISOIMAGE_OPTIONS} -hfs-bless
binary/yaboot
-hfs-volid Debian/Live_powerpc
GENISOIMAGE_EXCLUDE=yaboot/hfs.map
;;

According to the source here:
http://live.debian.net/gitweb/?p=live-build.git;a=blob_plain;f=helpers/lh_binary_iso;hb=428f4d972f38a4774107d5ea934774fca591f77b

This is was CD structure:

root at debianppc:/build/binary# ls -R
.:
live md5sum.txt yaboot

./live:
filesystem.packages initrd.img-2.6.32-5-powerpc
vmlinux-2.6.32-5-powerpc64
filesystem.packages-remove initrd.img-2.6.32-5-powerpc64
filesystem.squashfs vmlinux-2.6.32-5-powerpc

./yaboot:
boot.msg hfs.map ofboot.b pegasos yaboot yaboot.conf

I couldn't make SLOF load any file.
I was able to create another iso file using this command:

genisoimage -joliet-long -jigdo-template-compress bzip2 -r -V 'Debian
6.0.6 ppc 1' -o build.iso --iso-level 4 --netatalk -hfs -probe -map
binary/yaboot/hfs.map -hfs-parms MAX_XTCSIZE=2656248 --chrp-boot -part
-no-desktop --hfs-bless binary/yaboot -hfs-volid debian binary/

I also created /etc/yaboot.conf

I was able to start yaboot but I need to execute boot
cdrom:/yaboot/yaboot in order to load it. How can I make this start
automatically?

qemu-system-ppc64 -m 1024 -M pseries -cdrom build.iso -boot d -nographic

Welcome to Debian GNU/Linux!

This is a Debian Live CDROM,
built on 20130221.

The default option is 'live'.

If the system fails to boot at all (the typical
symptom is a white screen which doesn't go away),
append 'video=ofonly' or use 'live-failsafe'.

The plain options are for the powerpc family of
processors (from 601 to G4). The *64 options are for
64bit powerpc processors, which include the IBM
Power3, Power4, Power5, ... boxes, as well as the
Apple G5 boxes. Press the tab key for a list of
options, or type 'help' for help.

If in doubt, just press enter, and if that
doesn't work, try 'live video=ofonly'.

debian live installer

2011-07-14 Thread Jeroen Diederen
Hi all,

For some time now I am looking at the debian-live mailing list and I can
see that there is very little support for us PPC users left. Also for
some time no iso images are produced for this arch anymore. I don't
really care about the latter as we can make our own live images with
live-buld or customise the ones which are still available in the debian
live archive
(http://live.debian.net/archive/images/6.0_alpha2/powerpc/iso/)

Now comes my problem. Debian live installer does not work on PPC for a
long time. I have asked a few times in the debian-live mailing list if
someone (Daniel Baumann ?) could do something about it. Well, basically
I was told that PPC is a dying architecture and that there was no time
to work on this port. If I knew what to do I would start working on it
myself, but I lack the technical knowledge for this. I know that there
are still people working for this arch, so therefore I ask you guys here
if there are volunteers to look at the Debian live installer within
Debian live. It would be great to have such a feature for customised
Debian installations.

For people who do not know what I mean. In a liveCD of Ubuntu for PPC
there is the possibility to install the environment what you see
(usually with a clickable link on the desktop). This can also be
included for x86 Debian live iso's. Unfortunately this is not working
for PPC.

Hoping to hear from you guys soon...

Regards,
Jeroen Diederen

i'm going back and forth on this. i brought it up on debian-devel but
nobody seemed interested enough to throw in their opinion. it could be
that everyone is too caught up in the lenny release and the surrounding
flamewars to take the time :/

i think the biggest drawback to the mountkernfs approach is it would
make it hard to customize stuff like umask/uid/gid... at least without
an /etc/default/spufs. putting fs mount options in /etc/default
seems a little non-unixy too, but maybe that's okay.

however, putting it in fstab would mean that it would be done by the
installer and not a package, which means for users who have already
installed the system it wouldn't magically start working.

i think i'm siding towards the former currently (mountkernfs), but
i haven't brought the issue up with the maintainers of the respective
package. they might say this is too special case for us to support it,
in which case i'll need to decide if having a seperate package to do
this is overkill, or whether i should just make it part of the installer.
